Hello everyone:
My name is Bahram. I recently completed my Oracle8i certified DBA. My only experience is with Oracle simulators and Oracle8i personal edition at home.
I have been looking for a junior Oracle DBA position but no luck yet. Any tips will be appreciated.

while I use sqlplus, after I input the user name and password, a
error reported:
ora-01034 : oracle is not available.
Maybe this is because I had runned a program which consume lots
of system resources. But now the program is stopped.
Now what can I do to start the database? I can not use sqlplus to
startup database.
thanks for your help.
null1 - Can you connect " / as dba " from the net?
You must connect as internal if Oracle is not available.
Check the authentication methods configured.
2 - check your alert_<SID> file for ORA-???? errors.
3 - Can you reproduce the error? Look for errors in you Trace
files / trace the sessions.
4 - If running a heavy process, are you sure you didn't run
out of VM.
5 - There is a specific list for Oracle 8i (maybe the linux
section) that might have more usefull info.
6 - Trace the session for this specific heavy process and
look for errors ( and hope it is not ORA-00600 ).
You can find the statement that caused the error in the
trace files ( if any errors happened ).
7 - If using WinNT you will need aconsole access to restart it.
With Unix, telnet will do it.
If a crach happened you may need to shut it down first
with the ABORT mode. Just to clean-up memory.
IF A CRASH HAPPENED:
- Unix - look for "ipcs -a" pending mem segments.
- NT - reboot, as always.
8 - Restart as usual.
9 - SQL*Plus is NOT the best tool for starting up/shutting it
down.
Good Luck!

Muhammad AliOkay I've haven't done 1z0-045 ... but I at one point I was considering 1z0-050 so I'm willing to share my views on an upgrade exam and exams in general.
Remember Oracle are trying to ensure that a DBA who was tested at 8i DBA OCP has nw
It depends on your definition of read the topics. If you mean literally just read the topics then that will result in a failure. If you mean study research practice and fully understand the topics that should lead to a pass.
Bear in mind that Oracle would expect a competent 8i DBA attending the 5 day training course Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle8i DBAs [http://education.oracle.com/web_prod-plq-dad/plsql/show_desc.redirect?dc=D17389GC10&p_org_id=&lang=&source_call=] to be able pass the exam with perhaps 2 to 4 weeks further study, revision and practice.
Interestingly this particular exam has a relatively high pass mark (73%) ... one implication of that is that it is prudent to be comfortable with all topics.
Generally an upgrade exam will cover topics beyond that of the straight OCA/OCP exams. The questions will obviously be at OCP level.
It is possilble the Sybex book Oracle 10g New Features for Administrators Study Guide (Certification Study Guide) ISBN-13: 978-0782143553 which although for 1z0-040 may have some relevance for some of your topics. If you choose to purchase it that is your choice. (It seems to have good amazon reviews ... though all of these books can contain errors, it may or may not be updated for 10gR2, and some Sybex Oracle books are sometimes OTT in some areas IMHO, but that wouldn't stop me using one). -

Log Groups/Log Files Oracle8i
Sorry for the basic question but I need clarification help.
The Oracle8i DBA Certification Exam Guide indicates:
1. You must have at least two Log Groups each with at least one Log File in each. For Recoverability you
must have more than one Log File in each Log Group (and obviously the same number in each Log Group).
2. LGWR writes to only one Log Group at a time. If more than one Log File is in the Log Group, LGWR will write to each at the same time. For recoverability it is advised that each Log File within a Log Group should
reside on a separate disk.
3. As the Log File fills, a Checkpoint occurs and LGWR will then begin writing to the next Log Group as
previously described.
PROBLEM:
My current DBA Instructor maintains the understanding above is incorrect. He maintains:
1. LGWR will write to the first Log File in each Log Group simultaneously (for recoverability).
2. As the first log file is filled, a Checkpoint occurs, and LGWR will write to the second (etc) Log File in
each Log Group.
3. All Log Files within one Log Group must reside on the same disk (Syntax problem if you don't).
4. Each Log Group should be placed on a different disk for recoverability.
Who is correct? Did I misunderstand the DBA Certification Exam Guide?
Thanks for any help.Hi,
When you take an online back including logs (which is the default option for online backups in 700 systems)
this means that a backup is taken and all the logs that are written to during the time of the backup are also inlcuded in the backup. this means that you have the backup image and the logs to enable a restore and rollforward through the logs to a consistent point in time. If you took an online backup without including the logs, you would need to ensure you have those logs from the time of that backup to be able to restore that image and rollforward to ensure consisntecny.
One mjor point, never ever delete or touch active log files from /db2/NMS/log_dir as this will result in the system becoming inconsistent due to the logging mechanism being interrupted. If such a case does occur, please contact support.

Hello. I am really lost right now. I am just starting to read from scratch about Oracle and becoming an OCP. I have been reading SQL stuff for 1Z0-007 exam but I haven't got my database up and running yet. Now, I need to learn about DBA fundamentals for I and II. I really need a good book on learning all this and pass my exams. Do I have to buy an exam guide AND a "learn DBA" book as well.
Can anyone suggest a good information book that is for learning and an exam guide for Oracle 9i (with practice exam CD)?
Thank you

Migrating 8.1.7.4 to 10.2: about apps
Hi plp, I'm migrating my db 8i to 10g, and I have a lot of applications (I've done them with Oracle Forms 6i/10g) that work with the db. My question is... what kind of changes I must do in my apps for them to be perfectly compatible with the new 10.2 db? I mean, I suppose there will be some obsolete/deprecated features in 9i/10g that affect my apps that were working with the 8i db. Or maybe I can leave them unchanged and working as always with 10.2, ignoring obsolete/deprecated features, I really don't know...
Thanks a lot for your help. There were several features that were added in 9iR1, 9iR2, 10gR1 and 10gR2, so it has been a long way since then. Several I have counted just more than 172 New features from 8i to 9iR2. Several features were added, such as undo segments, memory advisors, the init.ora file was replaced by the spfile, it is no longer possible to connect as internal user, among many other features. If you plan to start your database with the 8i parameters it won't start.
I also suggest you to take the Oracle curriculum course "Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle8i DBAs" There you will have an insight on the main differences between those two versions and how you can better plan your migration to 10g.
I suggest you to read the Oracle® Database New Features Guide
10g Release 2 (10.2)
Part Number B14214-02
As well as get acquainted with 9i New Features. So you have an idea on the 10g new features and you can focus on the particular features you currently use.

Usage of init.ora file ?
Hi everybody,
can anyone explain me in detail about the usage of init.ora
file. thank u
hav fun
prabhu.Prabhu,
As you probably noticed, one book is not enough when preparing for the exams. Also, you need a library of books just to be a DBA. Although some people could do it strictly from memory, when you are working with live systems, it helps to have an extensive collection to reference on a day to day basis. The following is a list of my most recommended books. For a syntax reference book, I would reference "Oracle8i: The Complete Reference" by Kevin Loney and George Koch. Although this will give you the syntax you need to compose the "Create Database" script, you will still need the other books to understand what parameters you will want to set.
"Oracle8i: The Complete Reference" by Kevin Loney,George Koch
"Oracle8i DBA Handbook" by Kevin Loney,Marlene Theriault
"Oracle8i Backup and Recovery" by Rama Velpuri,Anand Adkoli,George Williams
"Oracle8i DBA: Network Administration" by Barbara Ann Pascavage
"Oracle8i PL/SQL Programming" by Scott Urman
"Oracle Performance Tuning Tips & Techniques" by Richard Niemiec, Bradley Brown, Joseph Trezzo
This is not the complete list of books that you will want as a DBA. There are many great books on Oracle. This is mainly my core recommended reads. If you are studying for your certification, don't be surprised if it takes you a long time to prepare. It is not unusual for it to take more than a year to become certified as the Oracle exams are pretty thorough and require a lot of information. I would also recommend you take the practice exams prior to taking the certification exams. I still have nightmares about taking the Performance Tuning exam. (And I'm no slouch.) I'm not trying to scare you out of taking the exams because I believe that they are very beneficial to DBAs. It will give you a more rounded education in Oracle database administration. Especially if you haven't had a lot of exposure to database administration. Before you take the exams, you will have to understand the application of the knowledge and not just the book material. And it's a lot of material. Good luck to you.

regardsIf you start talking about OCM then I would expect you have the capability of looking this up yourself.
You should be able to look up the course prices where you are and work this out for yourself, but usually the 2 day day courses will be cheaper than the 5 day ones.
You should also look at the course schedule to ensure your course is offered at a suitable location in the future.
You may find however the more expensive course are more useful to you ... so you have to weigh that up for yourself.
You only need one for OCP though.
One point to note is the course offered for OCP cannot also be offered for OCM, so you will need to do two more courses for OCM. By the time you reach that stage, if you reach that stage,I would suggest it is possilble only 11g will be offered for OCM, so you may wish to plan your courses on that basis.

Career Advice reqd!!
I last year got my 8i DBA certification and unfortunately through circumstances have not been employed in an Oracle role. As a result I have forgotten most of what i learnt though i am sure its not completely gone from my memory banks.
I am hoping next year sometime to resurrect this DBA knowledge but am not sure how to go about it which is why i would like peoples advice. My first question is how does 8i differ from 9i and now 10g. Has the structure of the database changed radically? Obviously i will have to upgrade to 9i and then 10g but i am wondering how best to go about this.
I was thinking that i would go back through all my 8i notes and get my 8i practical skills up to speed before attemping the 9i upgrade. But since my goal is 9i & 10g will this be a waste if the database has gone through radical changes since 8i and if this is the case should i not just concentrate on passing the 9i upgrade exam and then 10g or are most of the principles of Oracle database design, tuning, B&R and netwk admin more or less still the same as what they were in 8i.
I am not trying to shortcut to 10g certification next year, i would rather get to know 10g thoroughly than maybe spend time worrying about an outdated 8i.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Gusoracle8i certfied have good lead on other new certified people because in oracle9i there are four paperes and know in oracle10g there are only two paperes for oracle DBA track. Moreover I want to tell you that employeer give prefrence to oracle7 certified people because they have very strong and in depth concept. although there are lot new technology come in oracle database but the work and knowledge of dba still same and there is no any considerable change. in oracle10g oracle introduce the concept of automatic sga but it is not very much effective as was stated by oracle and oracle10g still under work.
I will suggest you just recall your oracle8i dba course and try to work on oracle9i server I feel no perticular difference in oracle8i(8.1.7) and Oralce9i (9.2) -
Need Advice - How to get support from Management?
Saturday, May 11, 2002 8:45pm ADT
Hi all,
I'm a developer with 5 years experience. I've been working with Oracle from the start. Last year I decided to work towards a specialization and distinguish myself from the other 300 developers at my office. So I got my Oracle8i DBA cert! I got my certificate in the mail last month. :-)
Since word spread around the office about my achievement I have been flooded with phone calls and emails from co-workers asking for my help with their oracle issues/problems. I've since come to the conclusion that I no longer want to be "just another developer" at the office... I want to be the in-house oracle consultant. But I have to convince the decision-makers at my company to let me serve them in this capacity... in other words - create a new position just for me.
I need to convince them of the value/benefit of having a person on staff who eats, breathes and sleeps Oracle. There are over 300 developers at my office as I've already stated and I am the only OCP. The project executive from Head Office who can approve this new position is visiting our center near the end of June.... so I have about a month to prepare my "pitch".
Any advice?
Thanks,
Phany LeBlanc
Moncton, NB CANADAA couple of nuggets:
1. If you want something, ask.
2. Be prepared for questions from a different paradigm. Managers don't care much about technology or certificates. They'll be asking about what value you'll bring to the organization in any given position.
3. Give examples.
4. Be persistent. If you get an answer like "I'll think about it" or "let me talk it over with ...", then follow up, in person if possible.
5. Don't make your case via e-mail. Most management hates e-mail and the problems it causes.
6. Avoid techno-babble.
7. Interview some managers who know the decision maker. Tell them what you're thinking about and ask them to help.

1 java test = OCP?
I am just wondering what Oracle was thinking when they decided that taking 1 java test should get an OCP credential.
When I got my first OCP, as Oracle8i DBA, I had to pass 5 tests. DBAs now have to pass 3 tests and take a course.
If someone wants to certify as a Linux Administrator, they can take 2 tests, and that's only for the OCA.
But if anyone takes the Java Programmer test, that's OCP? I passed the Java Programmer test several years ago (for Java 2), but I would never describe myself as a good java programmer; I only knew some basics.
It seems like there's some inequity here, that makes the OCP and OCM levels easily obtainable for some (java programmers), and more challenging for others (DBAs).I am currently fairly busy, and the java certs are not my scene, and I haven't reseached sun info on this, but I am concerned, perhaps unnecessarily, about the integration of Sun Java Certs. under the Oracle wing.
