Oracle9i Forms and XML-conversion

Hi,
in Duncan's White Paper "Oracle9i Forms in a Java World" you can find the following passage:
"These conversion tools make it possible to perform operations on Forms files that were impossible before. For example, you cannot diff and merge Forms binary
source files themselves. However, you can use the tools to convert two FormsModule files to XML, diff and merge them, validate the result, and covert it back to a Forms .FMB."
I must admit, my knowledge about Forms6i is quite limited, but I'm aware of the possibility to convert *.FMB (binary format) to *.FMT (text format) and vice versa. So I thought, this would have been possible before.
I'm not sure about that, so any clarification on this would be very nice.
What are the benefits of the XML-representation? I guess it't more readable because XML can better reflect the structure of a module than a flat textfile. Are there other reasons to use XML? Can someone give me real world applications (besides the mentioned diff/merge and documention purposes)?
Tnanks a lot,
Eric

Eric - we never supported you editing the FMT in any way and also, not all the information in the FMT was in text format.
XML gives you a structured text representation, meaning, as a text file you can easily make changes/diff/merge etc etc and so long as it still is in the correct structure it will convert back to FMB. You couldn't do this with FMT.

  • APEX 3.2 Forms and Reports Conversion

    Hi,
This link is a summary of APEX 3.2 new features (Forms and reports conversion and migrationn).
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/3.2_new_features.html
Just wondering if I can convert and migrate Oracle reports 6.0 ? If yes, I would appreciate steps to convert my Oracel 6.0 reports to APEX.
    Thanks,
    Ribhi

    Hello Ribhi,
For a readon I don't understand you have to start your migration project with uploading a Form (XML version). When you've done that you can add other types of source files, like Libraries, Object Libraries, Menu's and....Reports.
So it seems (now) that you MUST have an Oracle Form to start with.

  • Forms to XML conversion

    Hi;
What library and jar files needed to run "frmf2xml.bat" without installing Oracle Development suite 10g?
I have tried with frmjdapi.jar, frmxmltools.jar, xmlparserv2.jar, xschema.jar and tweak "frmf2xml.bat" for jar files path.
When I convert I get error saying:
    "Error initializing the forms Jdapi:
    no frmjapi in java.library.path"
    Thank you in advance.

What you are attempting to do is not supported by Oracle nor is it recommended.

  • Need information re: differences b/w Forms and Reports 6i

    Hello,
Hope someone in this forum can help me on this issue (and forgive my naivete wrt techical terms)...the ITS department within my company currently has an Oracle 8i db and an 8i AS. We have Forms (and Reports) 6i currently installed on the 8i AS but have not had need to use those as yet (we are mostly using financial apps). We are looking to upgrade to a 9i db (in add'n to the 8i) and possibly, to a 9i AS as well--and begin using Forms, Reports, Designer and Discoverer. My question is--could someone explain to me if what is commonly referred to as Forms 6i (and Reports, Designer, Discoverer 6i) are currently "bundled" in the Oracle 9i Developer Suite? I guess my (sub) question is: does the 9i Developer Suite have a higher version of 6i (i.e. 6.0.1) than what one would use with against an 8i db on the 8i AS? I see in the literature for Oracle 9i Developer Suite: Oracle Forms Developer, Oracle Designer, Oracle Reports Developer, and Oracle Discoverer (Admin). I've tried going through Oracle documentation but can't seem to find concrete answers.
Thank you very much in advance for anyone who can help me figure this out!
    -Karen

Oracle9i Developer Suite contains the latest versions of Oracle Forms/Reports - namely Oracle9i Forms and Oracle9i Reports - both can work with an Oracle8i Database (see metalink.oracle.com).
Oracle Forms 6i and Oracle Reports 6i are part of the older version of Oracle9iDS known as Oracle Internet Developer Suite. They can work with Oracle9i Database as well as Oracle9i Database.
    Forms 6i works with Oracle9iAS v1.0.2 and Oracle9i Forms works with Oracle9iAS v2.
I hope this clears things for you.

  • How to save XDP/Form with XML as a standalone PDF - Running out of time

Help...I'm in a time crunch.  I have a perfectly working form that takes XML and merges into a wonderful PDF on my machine (1000+ pages).  The problem is I need to distribute the finished PDF with the XML...not to two independent files.
I have tried every "Save As" and "Export" available and it only saves the PDF template without the data.
I have tried to "Print" to a PDF writer / pseudo-printer but it chokes and dies after a few hundred pages.
What am I missing?  How can I take this form and XML and make a final product PDF that I can distribute?
In case it helps...the form was made in LiveCycle and the XML is generated from PHP.

Thanks for your ideas.  I'm not using the reader...I'm using Acrobat Pro 9.x.
This isn't really a LiveCycle question because that has to do with the form design.  This is post-design and during the data merge...something only an end-user would see or have access to.
The form works great...the data is great.  They are merged on the screen and looks perfect.  However, I can't get the combined output saved anywhere.

  • Form Vs. XML Message based Workflow system

    Hi all,
Recently, I came across a statement that SAP Workflow supports both Form and XML Message based techniques.
Please explain what is the difference between Form based Workflow management system and XML-Message Based Workflow Management system.
What is the advantage of one over other ?

I would look into the Book. I don't have a copy at the moment, but I'm sure it is being addressed somehow. If not, then, google it and I hope you find something.

I don't think you'll get too many replies. I expect most people here are either committed to using Web Forms already (and so don't need this functionality) or else are still in client-server mode (and so don't understand what you asking).
We are just in the process of migrating from Forms4.5 to 9i (I'm in the WebUtil beta) and we are still finding out all sorts of non-obvious things about web-deployment - don't get me started on how awful the whole GIF thing is! So I'm not really qualified to have an opinion about Webstart. I only have the vaguest idea what it does and I'm not sure I want to read up about it just so I can tell you whether to go ahead with it.
What I will say is this:
    (1) Anything that makes 9i Forms more like a client-server experience for the users would be a good thing, bceause it would minimise the shock of transition.
    (2) Choice is a good thing. Your recent experience of developers' spleen over the removal of client-server should tell you that people respond well to being given options and badly to having them removed.
    (3) If I've correctly understood Haris Peco in their second point we could get rid of O9iAS and that would be flipping marvellous for everybody (except possibly the VP in charge of O9iAS Sales :P).
    My tuppence ha'penny worth.

The Oracle conversion tool that comes with 10g Forms gives errors.

  • XML Forms and Posting Directly to iView

    Hey Everyone,
This is my first time posting a question on SDN, so please forgive me if I leave anything out.
I have a question regarding XML Forms and iViews. We are using EP 6.40 SP12.
I would like to have an XML Form filled out and have it's contents sent directly to an iView which is located on the opening screen of our Portal. The scenario is that every Tuesday the form will be filled out, saved and will appear on the user's Portal. An appropriate folder structure has been created in KM to hold all the forms, etc...
Any help would be much appreciated,
    Cheers
    Rav

    Hi Ravinder,
After generating the forms, you have to create iViews for the Forms,Authoring iview and Render List iView.
These iViews can be assigned to users,or assigned to some page using Delta link.
The updated news will be available as a List on the Browser iView, which can be clicked to drill details.
The properties are set in the iView properties of Layout Set ,for example for authoring iView
    Layout Set = NewsExplorer
    For render List iView
    Layout Set = NewsBrowser
Path to Initially Displayed Folder /documents/myNews
The values will change depending upon the form name.
Please go through this document for a detailed example
    <a href="https://media.sdn.sap.com/html/submitted_docs/Best_Practices/EP/documentation/How-to_Guides/KM/How%20to%20create%20XML%20forms.pdf">https://media.sdn.sap.com/html/submitted_docs/Best_Practices/EP/documentation/How-to_Guides/KM/How%20to%20create%20XML%20forms.pdf</a>
This Document gives a step by step solution on using XML forms.

I have a acrobat reader, can I import text delimited data format to a PDF Form so that it can auto fill into forms that was created? If not, what about FDF and XML data

Yes, you can do all of that via Tools - Forms - More Form Options - Import Data, if you have Acrobat.
If you only have the free Reader then you can still do it, but it requires a script.

  • Process flow between edit ,renderlistitem and show form in XML form builder

    Hi all ,
i'm building from in xml from builder . i'm confused with the process between edit ,renderlist item and show froms .can any one please explain me the Process flow between those
    thanks,
    rajeev.

    Hi Rajeev!
There is no process flow between those forms. They are seperate views of the same document, nothing more.
The Edit form is always used if you create or edit a xml document based on the form.
The renderlist item form is used if more than one XML document is shown, for example in a list.
The show form ist used if the document should be displayed in full, eg by clicking on an XML document in a list.
It is even possible to add more custom forms and display them. If you "preview" an XML document, you get the choice to display the document with all display forms available (default Renderlist item and Show). If you watch the URL when previewing a xml document you'll see an URL parameter selecting the form to show.

  • XML Forms and URL links in RenderListItem Form

    Hello everyone,
I'm new at XML Forms and trying to do my first forms. I have this scenario:
    - user fills several entry fields in "Edit" Form, 2 of them include URL Links.
    - Every new entry in "RenderListItem" Form lists fields "Title" and URL1 URL2.
In RenderListItem Form, i would like to control the behaviour of these links. Link URL1 should open in a new window, but URL2 should stay in the same browser window.
How can i achieve this ?
Thank you in advance for any help,
                                                Nuno

    Hi Nuno,
you can achieve this by changing the XSL file.
Check out this thread for more infos: XML form display in same browser window

  • XML form and hyperlink

    Hi,
I have a created an XML form which uploads a pdf from edit form and displays a hyperlink to that pdf in view.
But my problem is that when I am clicking on the hyperlink it shows me the path to the document and then when i click on it opens the document.
I don't want the path to be displayed. I am using the schema reference for the the hyperlink property.
Your help would be greatly appreciated...
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Try by changing the class property from <b>Label</b> to <b>Counter</b>. The path name will not be displayed. It will be replaced by 1.
    Hope this helps.
