Oracle9i JDeveloper and SCM course

A new beta course to assist the implementation of JDeveloper and SCM is now
available:
Manage Development in Oracle9i JDeveloper with Oracle9i Software Configuration
Manager
It is available from the OTN SCM software download area at:-
http://otn.oracle.com/software/products/repository/content.html
Feedback very welcome.
thankyou,
David

OracleSCM is in definite need of a "Getting Started/User Guide". It comes with an Installation Guide but, once installed, no other (detailed) documentation to point new users in the right direction. Example scenarios and tutorials demonstrating workareas and containers etc would be very helpful indeed.
Whilst the 9i JDeveloper help/documentation is better, it assumes a certain amount of OracleSCM knowledge (or that you can obtain it from OracleSCM). Furthermore, not all of our SCM needs will be from within the 9i JDeveloper IDE...other files relating to our JDeveloper applications (such as requirements/design documentation, SQL & PL/SQL files etc) will want to be brought together under SCM where the use of the RON (outside of 9i JDev) will be required (I assume?).
We have been through the beta version of the new course and, whilst a definite step in the right direction, it is no substitute for a written "Getting Started Guide" and does not provide enough information to actually get new users/projects up and running (just the foundations). In particular, we found the Practice Areas alittle cumbersome and lacking (much needed) hints/solutions. We need less of the "Overview of SCM" (most people are familiar with the concepts/benefits and have used similar products before), and much more of the specifics of setting up/using OracleSCM and JDev-OracleSCM.
We are a JDeveloper (3.2) shop (naturally) looking to migrate our applications to 9i JDeveloper where the close integration with OracleSCM is an attractive new feature that we'd like to take advantage of. Much greater help & support will need to be provided to existing (and new) users if the application of this exciting new feature is to be attempted/successful.

  • Jdeveloper and SCM 10g

    Hi all,
i've already post this topic in SCM forum, but since i'm not sure if it belongs there or here, i'm posting it here too.
we have installed Developer Suite 10g, in order to use SCM with JDeveloper.
In the documentation says that the "Erase From Disk" option (from JDeveloper 9.0.5.1) is integrated with SCM (i.e. erases from file system AND from SCM Repository).
But our tests show that this doen't work. It only erases from the File System.
Does any one of you know how to make this option to work? What else do we have to do or set in SCM and JDeveloper?
Thanks in advance for your time.

    Hi Brian,
    thanks for yor answer.
in the next link, http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/collateral/jdev10g_fo.html, you can "navigate" to this section: IDE /Team Development /Other Common Features"; it says "Integration with File System operations such as Rename and Erase From Disk". We think that if it says "Common Features" is a common feature to all SCM systems.
Anyway, when will this feature be available in JDeveloper for use with ORACLE SCM?. Is there any workaround for this issue? How can we achieve the target?
    Thanks again.
    Bets Regards
    Jaime.

  • Integration (JDeveloper 10G and SCM 9i)

I am new working with JDeveloper and SCM.
Is it possible to integrate JDeveloper 10G to SCM 9i, or should I use the same version for both products, in order to reduce future problems?
Now I am having some problems, for example:
    1) I can not move a business component from a package to another. Both packages are checked out. The BC4J is checked out, too.
    2) When I try to add a new JSP to the struts file from the graphic view, I have to check out both files the strust, xml and StrutsPageFlow.oxd_struts.
    3) When I delete a file it is not deleted in the repository.
Are these problems related to the version, or should I install something else?
    Thanks for your help.
I am including this question in the SCM forum, too

AFAIK support for Oracle SCM is not yet implemented in JDeveloper 10g. Oracle promises to publish it on Extension Exchange (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/partners/addins/exchange/index.html) as soon as it will be available. I don't expect it released anytime soon :-(
Last version of JDeveloper in which I saw that working was 9.0.3.3. Since then it's been worse and worse.

  • How to view database table in oracle9i Jdeveloper

    Hi,
how to view database table in oracle9i jdeveloper, any manual setting .please help me.
    thanks
    saran.

In Jdeveloper go to View-->Connection Nevigator. there you will see all kind of connctions. Expand Database and check if your DB connection is present there. If not, you need to create using right clicking on Database and choose New Database Connecton. Here few screens will be there where you need to put the TNS entries of your database.
Once DB connection is created, you can expand the connection by clicking on + icon and you can see different available schema objects. Again you need to expand Tables and you can look for specific table in there.
    Hope this clears your doubts.
    Thanks,

    Regards

The user that owns the cubes and dimensions must have the role OLAP_USER so that the OLAP API can view the required information which is actually stored in a series of tables owned by the user OLAPSYS. This schema is usually referred to as the CWM catalog. I think the OLAP documentation explains the views that are part of this schema.
At risk of being rude - why are you creating a relational model? It is much easier to store your model within an 10g R2 Analytic Workspace. This is much more performant and provides greater functionality compared to ROLAP solution.
Watch out for Enterprise Manager (OEM) when deleting cubes and dimensions. I have had some very bad experiences with OEM not removing all the elements of a dimension or cube from the CWM catalog, even though the nodes in the OEM navigator tree do not show any dimensions or cubes.
Then when you try to connect to an OLAP schema with BI Beans you got some very serious java exception errors relating to corrupt metadata. At this point you have to use the OLAP PL/SQL packages to clean up the CWM catalog to remove all the invalid dimensions and cubes. It is not that difficult to do just takes a bit of time.
    Hope this helps

  • Jheadstart, JDeveloper and CVS and TeamWork

    Hi
We're four-developer team and we've been working with Jheadstart for some months. Now we want to work with team options that provide jdeveloper (CVS or SCM). But, we are a too much suprised with all the problems that other developers had with CVS, we read it in some jdeveloper forums (JDeveloper and CVS and TeamWork and JDeveloper and CVS
I get very worry about the problems that developers had with CVS and that at last they don't find a better solution than migrate to jdeveloper 10.1.3. All the forums recomend migrate to jdeveloper 10.1.3 for better support of team work, but I read (some time ago) that jdeveloper 10.1.3 still doesn't support ADF, then I assume we cannot use it with Jheadstart, Am I right? Is there a way to use Jheadstart with JDeveloper 10.1.3 Preview right now?
What do you recomend for team work with Jheadstart?
    Thanks in advance
    Liceth

    Liceth,
As you problably know, the JHeadstart team consists of consultants and we face the exact same problems and share the exact same frustrations as you do on an every day basis at our customer projects. It is indeed not easy to use JDeveloper in a multi-developer environment. In all fairness much of this is a given when doing file-based development, and I have seen the exact same problems in situations where other IDE's such as Eclipse etc were used. But using advanced frameworks like ADF and BC4J makes matters more complex, because the declarative way of developing these applications using drag&drop and powerful wizards make you as a developer be less 'in touch' with the file or files that are actually created and updated, and also there tend to be more files in such an architecture that are changed simultaneously by many developers at once.
Merging is the only way out of this mess, and merge tools are not perfect, far from it. They get better and better but at some point you'll need to understand the semantics of the files that are to be merged to be able to merge them correctly, and merge tools will in all likelyhood never become that smart.
Until they do, the only thing one can do is to tackle the problem from the other side: if merge tools dont understand the files they merge, we should take into account the weaknesses of these merge tools, and set up our files so that changes CAN be automatically merged, or in most cases at least. Indeed, JDeveloper 10.1.3 is taking good steps in this direction for notoriously tricky files such as JPR files and such. But the problem will never completely go away.
As for using 10.1.3, well, as you said the preview does not contain ADF so JHeadstart will never run on it. We are developing JHeadstart 10.1.3 that will run on the production version of JDeveloper 10.1.3, but it will be a long time before that release will see the light. And although JDeveloper 10.1.3 is a kick-ass IDE (imho), it will not magically solve all multi-user issues. It will just be a bit more bearable.
Is there ever a real solution for it? I don't know. I have worked intensively with the Oracle Designer product before I switched to Java, and that tool, which uses a database rather than files to store its information, was almost perfect when dealing with multi-user development. It could do so because the level at which conflicts occur is VERY finegrained (so not at 'code line' level but sometimes as far as 'individual properties in a property inspector' level), plus the advantages of instantaneous locking in the database when modifying something. And, thinking of it, it could do so because it dealt with 'structured objects' rather than files, thereby having some 'semantic' information about the data. I have this feeling we can only 'get it right' if we will treat, for instance, a Java file not as a collection of lines of code, but of a structured object tree with members, constructors, methods, parameters etc. etc., and store it as such, instead of storing it as a flat OS file.
Just ranting here (this really should be a personal BLOG entry rather than a forum post, but oh well). As you can tell, its a subject that is very close to every developer's heart.
    Kind regards,
    Peter Ebell

  • JDeveloper and Designer 6i Repository

I don't understand the reasoning behind the need to install Designer 6i in order to use JDeveloper in a 6i repository. If the repository you're using is remote (on a server vs local PC), and you won't be doing any work using Designer, why should you need to take up the space on your PC to install it?

As John correctly states, various things you might need to do as a developer (create workareas, create / merge branches) are only currently possible through the RON. In addition, we invoke other tools such as the Dependency Manager which are part of the Repository client install.
However, you don't have to install the whole of Designer. This is a bit confusing since Designer and Repository are still packaged together in the same installer and Repository is still not being properly marketed as a fully separate product (which it is). Early on during installation of "Designer", you will be prompted whether you want to install the whole of Designer or just Repository. For SCM in JDeveloper to work, you only need the Repository client side.
We're working on making the integration between JDeveloper and Repository tighter in a future release so that it is no longer necessary to install Repository client side.

  • Oracle9i Jdeveloper Web Services Deployment Descriptor

    hii,
i have created a web service in oracle9i jdeveloper. It is running. But I need to define a handler for this web service to handle multiple attachments. But whenever i give the handler chain in web.xml, the handler is not invoked. Also it does not allow me to change the deployment descriptor file to webservices.xml. please let me know a solution.

I believe this is a bug in JDev/OC4J 9.0.3 that is being further investigated right now. I have duplicated your problem in a simpler test case and folks are looking into it.

  • Jdeveloper and Unix

I really do not know if this place is the right forum to ask this question, but if any person can help me I will appreciate it.
My client is currently using an old application that runs in UNIX, but they are planning for a major upgrade. One of their requirements is that they want to move the database to Oracle, It must run in UNIX off course, their preferred OS. However, one of their major requirements though is that the system must be windows (workstations)
My question is this, is it possible for one to convert their application using Oracle Jdeveloper and still have the Database on UNIX

Its unclear what you mean by:
...convert their application using Oracle Jdeveloper and still have the Database on UNIXIf this mean that you want to rewrite application in some Java tehnology(by using JDev), then this is possible, for example: you can have db on unix, app server(in case of web application) on solaris and client workstations on windows).
If you want to automatically convert source code(written in technology X), then this probably is not possible.

I don't think you'll get too many replies. I expect most people here are either committed to using Web Forms already (and so don't need this functionality) or else are still in client-server mode (and so don't understand what you asking).
We are just in the process of migrating from Forms4.5 to 9i (I'm in the WebUtil beta) and we are still finding out all sorts of non-obvious things about web-deployment - don't get me started on how awful the whole GIF thing is! So I'm not really qualified to have an opinion about Webstart. I only have the vaguest idea what it does and I'm not sure I want to read up about it just so I can tell you whether to go ahead with it.
What I will say is this:
    (1) Anything that makes 9i Forms more like a client-server experience for the users would be a good thing, bceause it would minimise the shock of transition.
    (2) Choice is a good thing. Your recent experience of developers' spleen over the removal of client-server should tell you that people respond well to being given options and badly to having them removed.
    (3) If I've correctly understood Haris Peco in their second point we could get rid of O9iAS and that would be flipping marvellous for everybody (except possibly the VP in charge of O9iAS Sales :P).
    My tuppence ha'penny worth.
