OracleXE Windows installation failure (SQL Plus failure)

winXP pro SP2 AMD Athlon, Oracle 10 g express edition: OracleXE.exe product version 10.2
1. I have just downloaded OracleXE
2. After several successful steps of installation
(five new services are installed, four of them running)
Creating database step 1 of 5 starts and then:
a 'report error to microsoft' window is opened, saying
Oracle SQL*Plus has encountered a problem an needs to close ....blah, blah..
After closing this window Install Shield reports successful installation and when I try to launch the installed application (pressing Finish button),
it does not work (I did expect this after sqlPlus failure)...

There several logs in the oracleXE directory tree, can you advise me which could be of any relevance? (css.log, ....\database\sqlnet.log, ....\network\sql.log, listener.log, oradim.log, XE.bat.log)
I also discovered, that the installation works on another similar machine (I had to start a service manually after processor usage jumped to 100%), but on that machine an oracle client was installed previously.
On the machine where installation is causing problems, no oracle product has been installed previously !
Also - Regional settings for this machine are not English(US)

You should download Oracle9i Personal Edition. Oracle Lite is not what you need. There is no 'small' download. Oracle is a very large and complex product and as such is a large download. The Personal Edition is the smallest, yet complete download.

Installation of 11.1.0.5.10 Beta Blows Away SQL PLUS In Other Home

I had a working 10g R2 client installed and working. Installed 11.1.0.5.10 Beta into a new home. Attempted to run install scripts and determined that SQLPLUS no longer works in the 10g R2 client home. Any ideas? Should I have installed 11.1.0..5.10 beta into the exsiting home?

You may copy the sqlnet.ora and tnsnames.ora two files from your working 10gR2 home (under 10gR2 home's Network\Admin directory) to 11.1.0.5.10 Beta home (under 11.1.0.5.10 Beta home's Network\Admin directory).
Two possibilities:
1. use <10gR2 full path>\sqlplus.exe to run the ASP.NET scripts.
2. if you have ODT installation, you may use it's "Query Window"or "Run SQL*Plus Script" (under Tools menu) to run the ASP.NET scripts

Can I install SQL Plus in a client PC?

I am working on a PC which accesses the database using PL/SQL Developer and command line SQLPLUS (instant client). I would like to download SQL PLUS as well. Is there a way? I have seen some PCs in such a way but not sure on how to do it.
Could anyone guide me.

Based on "white" color background, think you might be looking for SQL*Plus for Windows (sqlplusw.exe).
This can be found in the Oracle database download page, but if your just interested in the SQL*Plus for Windows download the client zip file.
Assuming your looking for version 11g for Windows (32bit), link to [http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle11g/111060_win32soft.html|http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/oracle11g/111060_win32soft.html].
Down load the client file "win32_11gR1_client.zip (510,809,607 bytes)". Must accept the OTN License aggreement.
Run the installation.
SQL*Plus for Windows I think comes with Oracle Express Edition also, as another option.

Set Column width in query (not using SQL*Plus)

How can I Set Column width in query
I understand you can set column width using
column col1 FORMAT A5
select col1 from table1;But this only works in SQL*Plus
I want to be able to do this in a regular SQL query window (not in SQL*Plus), how can I do it.....
I am using a 'SQL window' in PL/SQL Developer IDE
and when I use this syntax it says:
ORA-00900: Invalid SQL statement
Any suggestions are appreciated...

Did you try using RPAD or LPAD functions? They fill the unfilled part of a string with character you provide... either on right or left side depending on what function you use.
e.g.
SELECT RPAD('Smith', 10, ' ') Name FROM dual;http://www.adp-gmbh.ch/ora/sql/rpad.html

SQL* Plus not compatible with Suse Linux 10

hi! i am using suse linux 10 and since i lost my sys/ system password i need to restore it using " / as sysdba " to login, but the problem is when i tried to install the sql* plus it says that "it does not support my platform", is there another way i can reset back my system password with out sql* plus? or can anyone guide me in the installation of sql* plus instant client? thanks a lot! :-)

i'm sorry for the confusion. i tried to install sql* plus but running the script to install it gave me an error that "it does not support my platform, it only supports red hat, suse 9.... etc." my os is suse linux 10 (oss) and am using oracle xe... so meaning i just wanted to install sql* plus to have a command-line utility to use " / as sysdba " to reset my sys/ system password. because i can't remember my sys/ system password that's why i can't get in to http://localhost:8080/apex site to change my oracle db. thanks for the reply!

URGENT - cannot log in to SQL Plus on Oracle 8i

Hi, I have Oracle 8i (8.1.6.0.0) installed on windows 98.
I want to use the SQL Plus module, but I have trouble to login SQL plus, and I an get error message:
ORA-12560: TNS:Protocol adapter error
I supposed the default username and password as follows:
SYS/CHANGE_ON_INSTALL
SYSTEM/MANAGER
SCOTT/TIGER
Am I using the correct version or edition (which I also don't know which edition)? Does windows 98 supports SQL Plus?
I was told to set up a database by selecting database administration then follow by database configuration assistant (in order to use the SQL Plus, firstly a database have to set up). I'm not sure whether this is true? but inside the database administration I don't have the so call "database configuration assistant". Can someone please help me?

I hope you can help, I'm in the same boat as the others who cannot log on to the SQL* using Oracle Personal Edition 8
I'm running on 98, and everytime I try entering SYS as username & CHANGE_ON_INSTALL as password, or SYSTEM as username & MANAGER as password; I get:
ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
ORA-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist
I've been trying for a number of days, and have created databases using the Database config assistant, and everytime, it gives me the details as SYS CHANGE_ON_INSTALL etc, but it still doesn't let me log into SQL*
Any help would be gratefully received,

Changing current directory under SQL plus

Can someone please tell me how I change the current directory under SQL Plus? I'm trying to run the nisetup.sql for XMLNEWS application in Oracle's sample application. I tried @"D:\Downloaded Files\XMLNEWSDIR\nisetup.sql", but, that doesn't work.
Can anyone help me on this?

One very late response, but... I have been using the Windows GUI version of SQl Plus (SqlplusW.exe) for years and I change the default directory all the time. Here is how:
Use the File, Open pull-down menu dialog, and navigate to the folder you want. Then, select one of the files in that directory. I keep a file named 0~A.sql in each folder where I use SQL Plus for that purpose. It contains only comments, something like:
--SET ECHO ONOnce I open such a file, all the START commands run scripts in that folder.
Now... since the Windows version of SQL Plus has been deprecated, how in the world can I do the same thing in the DOS command window version of SQL Plus?
Why in the world doesn't Oracle provide such an obviously useful feature???

SQL Plus command line: Arrow keys not giving previous commands back

As in tittle, I'm using sqlplus on Windows XP and OEL 5.5 and I can use up,down arrows in Windows to select previous command but I can't do it in Linux.
My DB is 11gR2 on OEL 5.5 .

Sorry, I don't know anything about Linux. The up-arrow feature on Windows seems to be provided by the operating system, not by Oracle. I would guess it's that way on Linux, too.
In Windows, there's one more thing that affect this: Properties -> Options -> Command History. Perhaps Linux has something similar.
In Windows (not just SQL*Plus or Oracle programs) if you right-click on the title bar at the top of a window, uyou get a small drop-down.
If you select the last item, "Properties", you get a small window with 4 tabs, the 1st of which is "Options".
On that "Options" tab, there are some settings for "Command History", oncluding Buffer Size. That seems to be the number of old ommands it will keep. You can set it to 0, but that seems to still keep 1 old command available via up-arrow.
Sorry I don't know any more.

TNSPING failure and but surprising connecting through SQL*PLUS

I have Oracle 9i and Oracle 10g express edition installed on my local machine.But since in the path i specified path of Oracle10g first so always tnsnames.ora got picked up from Oracl10g directory which is

sqlnet.ora is having just one line:

I tried by adding another line: NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH=(TNSNAMES) but did not make any difference so i removed.

DPM 2010 installation failure (SQL-server Reporting Services Problem)

Hi everyone,
The last 2 days I have been trying to get DPM 2010 installed on a DC. I know this is not recommended, but for our company with the current setup it's the only way to do it.
I have been reading some Microsoft articles (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399416.aspx) about doing this but I fail to do so.
I have made all of the right service accounts (I guess) and am doing everything in the guide but still get the same error message over and over again:
Setup has detected that the installation of Reporting Services is not correctly configured or no instance of Reporting Services is linked to DPM2010 of SQL Server
I just can't get my head around it. This is the error message when I try to install DPM 2010 using an existing SQL-database which I have configured in the SQL 2008-server sp1 installation.
I have enclosed some screenshots so you could maybe check some things that are not correct? Hopefully we can get this issue resolved, because it's driving me crazy to be honest!

Windows Installer failure during download of iTunes 10.5. Why is this happening?

I'm trying to update to the newest version of iTunes, and I get all the way through the process until the very end. I then get a message "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A Program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I checked to be sure I an up to date with all of my Microsoft updates, so I don't think that is the problem. Tried to download a couple of times, and keep getting this message. Not very tech-minded, so maybe I'm skipping an important step, but I have loaded newer versions in the past with no problem. Help, please!

Go to 'Apple Software Update' in Add or Remove Programs icon in your Control Panel. Select Change, then Repair. Then rerun the iTunes installation.

Windows 7 installation failure - Partition removal failure

Having an issue...
Have newish 27inch with latest SL build. Bootcamp 3.02. Tried to install Windows 7 (64 bit, which is probably the mistake). Made it most of the way through the installation process, then the screen started to hang for while... had no choice, had to reboot. Long story short, I eventually had to restart (hold option) to boot into OS, and then remove the partition. Problem is, even after I removed the partition from bootcamp, whenever I restart my machine, if I don't hold down option, it goes to a black screen looking for a bootable disk. It thinks it's still trying to boot to windows, even though the partition has been removed. Aside from blasting the OS away, any work arounds??

Been reading a bunch of notes on the Window's 7 installation, more workarounds then expected but it seems manageable. After getting the partition setup, rebooting, and getting into the windows installation setup, the partition that I setup was marked as 'not formatted properly' (as mentioned in the bootcamp installation guide). However, the "next" button was grayed out, not allowing me to continue. So, I tried formatting the partition from within the widows setup and everything seemed to work until the second reboot (post installation).
I'll go back and research more - thanks for your quick and helpful answer.

Control-C in SQL*Plus on Windows

Hi,
I use the "command-line-looking" sqlplus.exe (not sqplplusw.exe) Client version 10.2.0.1.0 on my Win-XP PC.
An annoying "feature" of this SQL*Plus, is that it closes when I press ctrl-c.
For example, when a multiple-lines output is running in the window and I want to stop it (there is no "Cancel" button in this SQL*Plus),
I have to be carefull not to press ctrl-c too many times.
Or when I start an Anonymous PL/SQL block - I have no way to end editing without executing it, but to enter some nonsense text and execute to failure.
Anyone knows how to avoid the window closure, or perform these 2 actions without using control-c ?

instead of starting sqlplus.exe, start a CMD window, and then start sqlplus. if you ctrl-c too many times (or if it registers after the last of the output has been displayed) it will close the sqlplus executable. if you start in a cmd window, and sqlplus.exe closes, you're back to the cmd prompt, and all of you previous output/sql is still there.
make a shortcut for sqlplus, and for it's "target", use the following:
cmd.exe /k sqlplus
