Orange line along bottom of clip in event library?

The last clip I imported has an orange line along the bottom of the clip in the event library. I can't locate anything in the help file or getting started pdf about what this is. Does anyone know?
This may be related to the fact that it is the only clip that has gray thumbnails -- they display OK when I'm skimming the clip, but after the cursor leaves the clip the thumbnails revert to gray again. This is the only clip this happens to.

An orange line at the bottom of a clip in the event window means that portion of the clip is being used in a project.

  • Dragging Clips to Event Library

i am brand new to final cut pro x, and am trying to take my clip(s) from the timeline up to the event library.  The problem is, it will not let me drag the clips out of the timeline.  I can pull it off the main timeline, but cannot get it up 2the top left part of the screen.
i am using the razor by hitting "B," letting the clip play as i need it, pausing it with "space bar" and using "B" again to signal the end of the clip.  Then hitting "A" to be able to pull it off the main line.
Once i do that i am able to drag it, but not off the bottom half of the screen where the film i am editing is currently running.
Any help is appreciated, and in lamen terms too please, like i mentioned, i am an infant to final cut pro & editing period.
    Thanks!

You are not supposed to drag clips from the timeline to the event library. That's no the way the software works.
Import your footage into an event. Then you can select the portions you want, mark parts as "Favorites" or "Rejects", or use appropriate keywords to organize your content.
FCP X has great tools for organizing media, but you have to learn its ways.
There are many good tutorials online. Check them out.

  • How to take clips from Event Library and put in separate event folder?

(I looked in iMovie Help menu but found no help.)
I recently did a file transfer from my Sanyo HD2000A which was a large accumulation of clips taken since last spring 2010. This was my first upload.
Now I have a lot of clips organized by date by iMovie '11. There are various categories of these clips, and one of them is +"Ducks in my back yard swimming pool."+ Another is a huge number of clips taken over time of three baby sparrows in the nest outside my window. It is a progression of how they are fed by their parents and how they grow and leave.
My plan is to get them into their own folders, filed by time/recency, and then pick and choose from those two folders/categories during the making of a movie which includes them along with other little adventures.
Question: How can I separate all of the duck clips and the sparrow clips so that they are each in their own folder and not spread out in folders organized by days?
    =L

Lorna, I think I understand better now what you are talking about.
So on any one clip, it will be ducks, or sparrows, but not both.
You can create a folder in the Event Library called Ducks and another folder called Sparrows. These must be in the Movies/iMovie Events folder on your internal drive, or they must be in the iMovie Events folder at the top level of an external drive.
Go through your current Event folders. Drag the duck clips to the duck folder. Drag the Sparrow clips to the Sparrow folder. I would do a MOVE, but if you have enough disk space, you could do this as a COPY until you are sure that all works as you intend.
The next time you open iMovie, it will generate thumbnails and cache for these new Duck and Sparrow events. The events will be placed in the Event Library in the month of the most recent clip, even though the clips may span several months.
If all goes well, you can delete the prior events. If there is footage still in them (that is not sparrows or ducks, for example), you could delete the thumbnails and cache folders and let iMovie regenerate thumbnails and cache after it opens.
Also, Tom's advice about not moving or renaming anything you have already used is very appropriate...
If you have already created Projects using this material, this will break the links in your projects. (Unless you did a COPY rather than a MOVE above and left both the old and new folders intact.)

  • Movie Clips in Event Library not Recognized By Project Library

I downloaded Photos but when working on a project in iMovie 9 my iPhoto videos were not found.  However if I revert to using iPhoto I regain my ability to move selected photos into my iMovie project so for now I will simply not use Photos.  However I still have a problem.  The movie clips in the projects in my Project Library don't find the clips in the Event Library in the iPhoto Videos folder.  I see either:  "This clip's media file is not currently available" or "Source clip is missing."  Is there some way to refresh iMovie?  Fortunately the projects shared to iTunes are still intact.

Many who post here use Preference Manager from DIgital Rebellion to trash preferences. It's reliable and the price is right – free.
I assume you've tried different events on different drives and the no-playback problem persists.
And just out of curiosity, can you play clips in a project timeline or if you open the clip in its own time line? And does the skimmer skim?

  • Out of memory on hard drive but can't get rid of clips in Event Library

My hard drive has only 6gb left on it so I'm trying to free up space by deleting some of the clips in my Event Library. When I go to File - Move Rejected Clips to Trash, I get a message telling me there's not enough memory left to complete the operation. I have over 150 gb of material in the Event Library and most of the rest of the memory is used up in iPhoto. Also, previously, I tried to move a bunch of stuff to my external hard drive but had a horrible time recovering clips from it. Can you help?

Hi all... I had a very similar issue.  I had a hard drive replaced by Apple on my iMac due to a total hard drive failure.  I attempted to restore my last time machine back up through my time capsule but I get some type of sparse bundle package error.  It appears that something is coming back from the back up as I only have about 180GB remaining space out of 1TB.  Any advice?  It appears that Apple had re-installed the latest version of Lion back to my hard drive.  I'm completely distraught here as like Romantic Heretic, I have over a decade of information currently lost.
Any help with step by step directions would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Split a filmstrip/clip in event library.

I have imported an old mini dv-8 movie in imovie and somehow it has become one long filmstrip/clip in the event library.
I would like to split and divide this clip in and over more events. Does anyone knows how?
(I know that it is not possible with imovie08, because a filmstrip/clip can only be split in the project library)

I would like to split and divide this clip in and over more events. Does anyone knows how?
Applications like QT Pro ($30) and MPEG Streamclip (free) can do this easily. If your captured file is not currently being used in any project, you can open it in one of these applications at the Finder level and proceed to divide the file into the segment blocks you want or trim out what you wish to keep and discard anything left over. The strategy is the same for both utilities.
    1) Open the file in either application.
    2) Scrub the playhead to the approximate frame you wish to use as the beginning of your segment.
    3) Use the left/right arrow keys to select that exact frame you want.
    4) Press the "I" key to set your "in point."
    5) Scrub the playhead to the approximate frame you wish to use as the last frame in your segment.
    6) Again use the left/right arrow keys to select the exact frame you want.
    7) Press the "O" key to set your "out point."
    8) Use the "Save As..." file menu option to save your segment to your had drive as an appropriately named file.
    9) Repeat steps 2 thru 8 until done.
    10) Discard the original file/Event folder if no longer needed and import your file segments to an appropriate new or pre-existing Event folder.

  • Discerning Clips In Event Library that are Used in a Project

I am cutting my FCPX teeth on 10.1 after having used imovie for years.  I am accustomed to imovie showing me which portions of a clip are being used in the timeline by having a small colored bar visible on that portion of a video clip in the Event Library.  This is very useful for me and and cant figure out how to set that in the preferences.
Can anyone point me in a direction?  Thanks very much!

    It's under View>ShowMedia Ranges.

  • How to copy/export a video clip from event library to external hard drive?

Can you help? Can you export a video clip from the iMovie Event library to a hard drive

You can "daisy chain" FireWire devices. Plug your IF into the Mbook, and plug your external disk into the IF (it has two ports...), or do it the other way around, whatever seems to work best.
The whole chain will be as fast as your slowest device, and I think the FPod is FW 400, so the disk will also operate at that speed. Many people work like this on their laptops, and it works fine. Better than USB.
Don't use USB for it. USB needs CPU and is in general less efficient in handling audio. Daisychaining FW-devices is the way to go.

  • Lifting compound clips into Event Library?

I'm wondering if there is a way to save compound clips into your event library?  I have been syncing audio and video manually in the timeline-long interviews- and I'd like to lift these long, now compounded clips back into the event library so that I have more room to play.  Thanks!!!  Any ideas?  I'm I missing something?  Work Arounds?

The best way to work with Compound Clips is to select the clips you want to use from the Event Browser then make those into a Compund Clip  - and THEN open that clip in the Timeline. That way the CC lives in your Event Browser and you can use it in any Project.
I've not tried this workaround but it just came to me - try Creating a compound Clip in the Event Browser (use any clip for this) then with the CC that you want in the Event Browser open in your Timeline, select and copy its contents.
Next, open the new CC in the Timeline and delete the clip (or clips) from it, and paste the stuff you want to save into it. As I said, it's just a hunch but it may work - please let me know what happens.

  • Deleting part of a clip in event library in imovie '11

    Hi,
i'd like to delete parts of clips in the event library in imovie `11. So not in a movie/project, but in an event!
if i do it the way it worked with imovie 09 (rejecting and than "move to trash")  imovie ´11 moves the whole clip to trash. even if only a part of it was marked as "rejected".
    1. How should i keep my library small in terms of disk space, without deleting the parts of my clips i definitely will never ever use in a movie?
(i have lots of very big clips (e.g. from GoPro cameras) with each about 4 GB)
    2. Why does the way i described above work with imovie 09, but seems not implemented in imovie ´11?
Thanks a lot for your help!

A couple of features might be of interest.
    1) Select your clip. Then, in the top menu bar, select CLIP/Special Effect.../Flash and Hold Last Frame.
This will create a flashbulb effect, and then hold the last frame in the clip still. The flash effect is actually a Fade Through White transition, so you can edit it out if you don't like it.
As a hint, if the frame you want to freeze is not at the end of the clip, drag to create a selection so that there is a yellow border around a range of clips, the last frame of which you want to freeze. Then Edit/Split Clip. The frame you want to freeze is now at the end of the clip.
    2) You might also want to try CLIP/INSTANT REPLAY/25%. You can highlight an action by replaying it in slow motion.

  • Weird date of clip in Event Library (2021, not 2007)

I just imported some footage from my DV video camera. Because there was some blank space at the beginning, and a snippet of previous stuff on the tape I used, it imported as 3 clips. Which is fine, because I just deleted the first and last clips. This is not my problem, but I mention it in the hopes that it might give you a clue to the solution to my REAL problem, which is...
In the Event Library (lower left-hand panel), instead of being listed with my other 2007 videos, it's listed as an item in the year 2021! Stranger still, when I click on the clip itself (either in the lower right-hand panel with the thumbnails, or its listing under the 2021 year in the lower left-hand panel), its date is listed correctly (as September 22, 2007) in the horizontal gray bar running across the top of the thumbnails. Hmmm! Somehow, iMovie has decided that this event took place in 2021, even though this particular clip in that event comes from 2007.
The date is set correctly in my DV camera. And I have imported other clips from this DV camera and they all showed up in the 2007 list. My MacBook Pro's date and time are set correctly.
I've tried to move the clip to the 2007 year, but it insists I merge it with another clip. How can I tell iMovie to change the date it thinks this thing is from? iMovie is supposed to be strong in finding video on my hard drive and making it organized and available to me in the Event Library... but how can it do this if it insists that video I shot and imported today was actually done 14 years in the future???

I don't know what caused the problem, but here's how I solved it. Thanks, everyone, for your help.
I searched for 2021 using Sherlock. I found two files with the date in their names; one was the .dv clip itself, the other was the file for the thumbnails. I changed their names from 2021 to 2007.
I also found the text file entitled "iMovie Data" which was in the folder named with the movie clip's name. The 2021 date was in that file once and was presumably the link to the video files whose name I just changed. I changed that date from 2021 to 2007 and saved it.
I relaunched iMovie and the clip was in the 2007 area, where it should be.
I wasn't in the mood to experiment, so I don't know if it was necessary to change all 3 things. It probably was, for consistency at least.
Darn! I changed all those dates without checking what the lottery numbers were gonna be in 2021!! I guess I can't retire then after all...

  • Line along "bottom" of image when using camera on iPhone 4

    Hi all
So I have a brand new iPhone 4 and everything seems fine, except for an issue when taking pictures with the camera, which I have a sneaking suspicion is a hardware fault. I'm hoping not, but I don't hold out much hope...
So when I take pictures, I have a line parallel with the bottom (side with the home button) of the iPhone. This appears both in the preview image when taking a shot, and on the saved image. It does not show when shooting video, but I have noticed the image is zoomed in slightly when shooting video, and the line is not in this.
The line is approximately 1cm away from the edge of the screen. This is not a discoloration, like with the bonding agent, it looks like a line of pixels.
I have taken a picture, but can't see how to upload it on this forum. If it'll help, I'll upload elsewhere and link it.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

And also when I completely turn my iphone off it doesn't reboot when I hold the power button in and I had to do a soft reset to make it restart but even when I did that it wouldn't reboot and about 1 hour later when I tried it again it did the screen was white with nothing on it apart from a small oval in the middle of the screen showing my lock screen and it took 4 hours for it to sort itself out and then it started flickering :( :( please someone help what can I do??!!

  • Faint white line (brightened line) along bottom of display

My computer (bought in Oct. 2004) has suddenly developed a faint white band starting at the bottom left of the display and running across the bottom of the display. It looks as if the backlight is brighter in the area of the band. The band gets fainter as it goes across and is pretty much invisible by the time it hits the lower right corner. The band is about 1/4 inch wide (tall) and doesn't have sharply defined edges.
On searching the forum, I found the following locked thread that seems to address this issue:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=975713
On reading the thread, however, it was not clear to me whether this problem falls under the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/repairextensionprogram/) or indeed whether a definite solution has been found.
Has anyone had this problem and had it successfully resolved over the long-term? (Some posters in the locked thread had various components replaced but then the problem recurred.)
    Tom
    iMac G5 1.8 GHz 20" (1st Gen)   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Thomas this was a problem some time ago, and surfaced together with a different problem of faulty capacitors on the mid plane board. Removing the back cover look at the small silver capacitors and check that they aren't bulging or leaking. This flaw prompted the repair programme, and appears as broken or distorted images on screen. You should call Apple.
The bright line on the screen seems to be screen problem alone, a larger thread is at: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=197559&tstart=270.
My own IMac has worked perfectly (good caps) but had the bright band issue. The screen was replaced and for a few months was fine, but the bright band (as your excellent pictures) returned. I should call Applecare again, but haven't yet.

  • Splitting One Large clip in Event Library

I recently had some 8mm film transferred to digital. I found some Christmas' that were taken when I was a kid. This segment was on 11 minute stream of multiple Christmas' together. When I imported the AVI that I received back, it naturally was on long clip. What I would like to do is split these into multiple events (I think I can remember when each year was, getting old you know )
Everything I have read seems that it should work, like:
Place the scan to where I want to split, then press Command-Shift-S, but all I get is a beep.
I select the clip I want to make into one event and tried copying, but no paste. Tried moving, but it wants to move the whole clip.
I tried selecting the next year and do the File | Split Event before Selected Clip, but it is grayed out.
I'm at a loss for what to do, so if anyone knows the "tricks" to do this, please help.
    Larry

I use MPEG Streamclip for this, and it is free. QuickTime Pro also works great.
    Instructions for MPEG Streamclip
    1) Download and install MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5 (free).
    3) Start MPEG Streamclip
    4) Drag your 11 minute clip into the MPEG Streamclip window.
(If you don't know where it is, right-click on the clip in iMovie and select "Reveal in Finder"
    5) If you want to split a long clip into smaller clips, you can make smaller clips by using MPEG Streamclip. Move the cursor to the "in" point of the clip, and press i. Move the cursor to the "Out" point of the clip, and press o. Then do steps 5 and 6 and repeat until you have done this for all clips you want.
    6) Use FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec (or h.264 if you prefer)
    7) Optional: If you know the date and or time of the footage, name your file
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss
(let mpeg streamclip provide the extension). This will provide metadata that iMovie will use to put the event in the right year and month.
    8) Save the resulting file in a place where you can find it, like your Desktop.
    9) Open iMovie.
    10) In iMovie, choose FILE/IMPORT/Movies... and choose the file you saved in steps 5,6,7. You can import several clips at once if you want.
    11) iMovie will generate thumbnails and you can edit.
