Orange slot in MSI K9N SLI Platinum

Quick and Dirty:
What cards can I use in the Orange slot for in the K9N SLI Platinum?
Details:
I currently have the K8N Neo4 Platinum and am upgrading from 939 to socket AM2. I want the K9N SLI Platinum board but NEED 3 PCI slots. The three cards I need are Promise Ultra ATA/133 card, Soundblaster X-Fi sound card, Belkin wireless G LAN card. The K9N has three slots but that INCLUDES the orange slot but I don't know what its for.
I tried the wireless card in the orange slot but i can't get the drivers to install and "accept" the card. Works fine when I switch back to white slot. I'm afraid without 3 slots I cannot purchase the board. Any solutions?

Tried:
Raid card installed without a hitch, first time installing that in this system.
Also tried:
Moved X-Fi from two slots down into the orange slot, was working immediately after bootup. I'm psyched beyond belief.
Will be buying the K9N Platinum. Thanks for the info.

  • Help with ram slots on MSI P7N SLI PLATINUM

    rig config:
    MSI P7N SLI PLATINUM (MS-7380)
    bios version: 1.3v
    Q6600 quard core 2.66GHz
    Zotac modded 9800GTX+ amped version
    2x2 Gb DDR2 800MHz Kingston
500 watt (absolute) power supply (taken form an old HP workstation)
    windows 7 X64
    Everything's on stock setting
Its been almost 1 & 1/2 years since i bought this rig, and from first month itself i have been having problem with the ram. The problem is not with the sticks, its with the ram slots. There are different things that happen. Sometimes when i boot my system:
    1) either, it wont start, i.e. no boot screen.
    2) It will load upto windows startup screen, crash and restart in an infinite loop.
    3) It will load windows, then crash after sometime.
    4) If i run any memory diagnostic, it will give errors.
At these times, i take out my 2 ram sticks, tinker with them, place them in different combination of ram slots, try push them in, in a certain way, keep trying until it yields and it boots up again ( generally a process of 1/2 an hr to an hr). After this my system will work fine ( no errors on any memory diagnostic) and boot properly for a week or 2, maybe even a month, but then again the same problem happens. I know for sure that there is no problem with my dimms (have checked them in other system and they work fine), its something to do with ram slots, or memory bus-controller structure.
Recently the problem happened again, though my tinkering didn't help. My system only boots up if i place any of the ram sticks in the 3rd slot (the 1st orange one). It wont work for any other slot and neither will it work if i place both of the sticks together. I have tried resetting my bios as well cmos settings, but it has not helped. My mb is still in warranty, but if i give it for repair, it will be gone for a good month or so, which doesn't go well with me. If someone has any suggestions, or a way out, it will be highly appreciated. Please help!

yes the psu has a single +12v rail with 21A rating, but somehow i don't feel the problem is because of it. When my system successfully boots, it works properly. I can play or work on high performance softwares for any number of hours without fail, which ought not to happen if the psu is bad.
Hmm, you are ignoring the possibility that your PSU is "flaky" (that's a technical term)!!!! You've never had any gizmo where "sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't work"?
If you don't want to buy a new PSU then at least beg-borrow-steal another one and see if your symptoms change.

  • MSI K9N SLI Platinum - SATA not hot-swappable?

can i get a confirmation that K9N SLI Platinum motherboard does NOT support hot-swapping the SATA drives. I switched to this board for the AM2 socket and now i am not seeing the removable drive bays as hot-swappable (ie. no green arrow down by the clock). maybe i am missing a bios setting?

I check two machines today and one is just fine using the removable trays and any drives we put in there show up in the 'safely remove hardware' tool. the other machines does NOT detect any drives inserted while the machine is powered on and something else - under the 'policies' tab the top two choices ('optimize for quick removal' instead of 'optimize for performance') are greyed out but there is an option below them that i can check and uncheck (i cannot remember the exact title of this option).
I assume you are trying the same drives when you swap the removable trays between the two machines.  Some drives have a jumper that has to be removed to enable SATA II operation, so if they aren't the same physical drives you might want to check that.
I think the stuff below the greyed out area in your 'Policies' tab is a check box that enables/disables write caching.  You might want to try checking/unchecking that.
Also, you should check out the IDE/ATA Controller selection in the Device Manager.  Take a look at each instance of controller that shows up there.  SATA controllers actually a primary and secondary channel and each channel has a master and a slave drive, just like old IDE controllers.  Look at each tab on both machines and make sure all of the drive's features are set identically on these tabs.  Sometimes Windows can try to outsmart you. For example, I have an SATA II Maxtor drive that has its transfer mode downgraded to SATA I by Windows (there is a little yellow triangle with a '!' in the middle of the lower part of the panel).  The help balloon for this arrtibutes it to 'excessive transfer errors.'  I haven't tried to chase that one down yet, however.
As far as setting the machines up the same way, sometimes the sequence of driver installations can have an effect.  For example, a RAID driver installed during Windows setup using the 'F6 - install other driver' option can behave differently from one installed with the Device Manager 'Update Driver' function.
Sorry I can't be of more help here.
Maybe someone else in this forum is a bit more knowledgable on the subject.

  • K9N SLI PLATINUM low data transfer rate

Hi, (sorry for my pour english) I had to go back to Winxp native SATA/IDE drivers and my pc crash & BSOD problem it's gone! :D (BSOD when i install some programs or some games, listening music and moving data at the same time, etc.) now i'm available to execute multitasks without any troubles. But now the transference it's quite poor  , I think this is an easy and temporary solution for this big problem.
I bought my PC on 2006 and the Windows XP drivers are from 2001, aren't new Nvidia/MSI drivers to fix this annoying problem?
    Thanks.

    PSU PowerCooler 550w
    HD WD3200 SATAII
    NX7900GT

I've got nearly the same problem, but a little worse. My data transfer rate seems very slow for a 100mb network and if I start copying files over the network, after only a couple of megs I lose connectivity to the network completely! I've removed the network cable and windows notices this, and when I put it back in windows also notices the change, but the green and orange lights on the port itself stay on solid. If I reboot windows everything comes back. I don't have problems browsing the web, seems to only happen when the ethernat port is running close to full load (for the connection speed of 100mb as apposed to 1gb).
Anyone else seen this? I'm on the latest drivers, the latest bios and I've tried disabling on of the network ports in the bios but his didn't work.

HEY GUYS FINALLY GOT A ANSWER FROM MSI Co.
According to this best thing is RMA..
    Dear Kamal,
We have fixed this issue by changing C565 from 100pF to 220pF. All the stock had been reworked, and we have informed all the MSI™ Distributor locators.
So please get your MB for RMA.
As to the RMA, The normal procedure is to contact your reseller (the place you bought the board from) for repair/exchange , If the reseller for some reason like bankrupt cannot be contacted, then contact MSI distributor http://www.msi.com.tw/program/contact/where2buy/ or MSI office near your place http://www.msi.com.tw/program/about/w2b/index.php
    Sorry for any inconveniency.

  • K9N SLI Platinum MS7250 ver1.1 ... need help with Windows 7 install

    Hello,
Having an intermittant issue with Windows 7 32bit.  During startup Windows 7 gets stuck at the logo screen.  Not always though.  Every 7-8th reboot it will make it past and go all the way into Windows 7.  I've tried all sorts of combinations of "ebabling/disabling".  This system ran XP professional for 3 years without any issues.  Currently, I have the most luck by connecting the keyboard and mouse to PS2 and leaving USB disabled.  This may not be the issue though.  Once I got Win7 to boot I performed driver updates etc.
If someone has suggestions please let me know.  I'm about to try the USB bios flash but have never done it before.
    Thank you,
    BK
    CPU:   AMD 64 x2  5000+
RAM:   4GB Patriot Viper Series  -- set to 2.1V per specs, 800MHz, setup in Dual Channel mode
    Video:  NVidia GeForce 7900GS
PSU:    600Watt  CoolerMaster ATX12V   12volt rails push around 18amps and I'm using the additional power port for power to the video card
Bios ver:   1.3  (this is what shows on the splash screen at startup however CPUID shows 080014 - not sure what that means)
    Motherboard:  K9N SLI Platinum MS7250 ver1.1

    Hi Guys,
    Thank you for the replies.
    -  Yes it is a fresh install of Windows7 on a drive that originally had XP Pro
    -  If I boot into safe mode it does go into Win7 most of the time.
    -  I posted on the MSI tech support page (http://support.msi.com/index.php) and the response was to upgrade the BIOS.  What do you think?
    -  I've been using this graphics card for three years and is nowhere near as powerful as what's out there now.  In fact all of the components are three years old except the RAM
    -  I tried the old RAM (2GB Corsair) and it also had the same issue.  Even at default RAM settings or otherwise.  Now I'm back to the 4GB Patriot Vipers.
    -  What is this capacitor problem people are referring to?  Is it a problem specifically on this model board?
    Thank you..

  • MSI k8N SLI Platinum - dead??

    Hello,
I have started the PC as per usual. Pushed the power button... nothing. Then again... nothing. Then I swithed off from the switch near the mains entry. and switched on... PC started however I get nothing on the screen. No beeps.
I have an Antec Truecontrol 2.0 power supply, an MSI K8N SLI Platinum (socket 939) with AMD Athlon, 2 GB Corsair TWINX Ram, three HDDS SATA, Raptor 75GB as Primary (C:) and another two WDS. Video Card: BFG 7800GTX+ 256MB OC, PCI - Express.
System has functioned Ok for three and a half years at least. I have replaced the Northbridge Fan from the beginning with a Blue heatsink - I believe Zalman. No temp issues. No overclocking, I am not using any commander modes etc etc.
When I look at the D-Bracket I get Memory Init Error (RED-GReen-Red-Red). I am pretty sure it is not the RAM. I pulled the RAM, used only one stick... same error.
I pulled the video card out. Then interestingly the system reaches the phase just before booting and the D_Bracket shows Floppy Init error (Green-Red-Green-Green). I tried moving the video card to the second PCI -ex - I also reach the Floppy Error point. I put in a crappy PIC-Ex video card - I reach the same Floppy init point - the floppy actually seeks but does not try to read. Unfort I forgot where I put the Monitor adapter thingy so I can;t check if I get anything on the screen with the crappy PCI-Ex video card. Will get it... soon...
I have a hard time determining whether it is the Video card or the mainboard. I have pulled the battery out, left overnight, pushed the BIOS reset... nothing helped. With Video Card in PCI-Ex slot 1, I get the memory init error. With the card in PCI-Ex slot 2 or with no card or with crappy PCI-Ex, I get to the Floppy Init point.
Could it be that at that point I would be getting a VGA error that I cannot see on the screen ? Why then NO BEEPS? Does this Mobo model not beep, just uses the D-Bracket?
It is important - if it is the mobo I am done for, I have to buy Mobo, RAM, CPU... $1,000. If it is the Video card I may find something 1 slot wide and similar to the BFG ...
Can anyone help narrow this please ?
BTW on the screen I get NOTHING, if I pull out the cable the monitor says - check connection, if I plug it in the monitor goes to power saving.
    Thank you Heaps

Put a stick of memory in there of el-cheapo brand.
Those Corsairs you have need more voltage to start if I'm not mistaken.
Found out what the prob was - the BFG 7800GTX was DEAD. RMA-ed the card. the MSI Mobo is Ok

  • MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum problems again

Like many of you all who suggested me to RMA my board couple weeks ago.  Well, looks like I finally got the board back and I decided to give it a go.  Put in my computer parts (CPU, Ram, using on-board vga/dvi) and gave it a go.  I turned on and then I see the same red light that occurred to me in the previous problem that I had before sending it in.  I am thinking MSI didn't thoroughly test the board enough?  I tried sticking the memory stick in different slots to see if that would help, still no go.  I switched/changed cpu   I contacted MSI and they said to reseat the CPU and check PSU. I told them that my PSU is brand new (Corsair 650TX) and confirmed them that it is indeed working.  I took it out of the case to test by putting a cardboard underneath the motherboard using only 1 stick of ram in DIMM1 slot.  Reseat/re-inserted the CPU and heatsink fan in.  Connect the DVI cable to the on-board dvi connection.  Then I took a flat screw driver and turned it on, I saw the CPU fan spin and the PSU fan spinning but the same red light showed up.  I am still stuck and wonder what other options I have left.
    MSI K9N2 SLI Platinum
    AMD64 X2 5400
2x2GB Corsair (I am only using 1 stick to test at the moment)
Using onboard video instead of my 8800GT
Corsair 650TX watts (tested and it is brand new)
I feel like I don't know what else to do except I could take it to a computer technician to have a second look at it.  If anyone have suggestion, I'd be happy to try.

I have done all of the following you listed except for testing the CPU in another machine.  I will bring the two cpu to a local shop and have them tested.  I will report back.

Do you have power cable for the CPU connected?
Does the CPU works in another machine?
Have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?
    Have you tested with mainboard out of PC case too? {With one memory stick in 1st DIMM close to CPU socket}
Does the CPU is properly installed?
Checked CPU for bent pins too?

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum Voltage regulator cooler size question

I have a question about MSI P6N SLI Platinum's Voltage regulator cooler. Is it the same size of K9N SLI Platinum? The reason I ask is I plan to use water cooling on it. But the only regulator  waterblock I can find is desgined for K9N SLI Platinum from aqua computer http://www.aqua-pcs.co.uk/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=218. So can I use this one on P6N SLI?

I guess not... P6N is much thinner, if your K9N VR cooler is as thin, then it can fit in. But I guess not.

  • MSI P6N SLI Platinum OEM Modification Question

The MSI P6N SLI Platinum OEM edition motherboard comes with all the circuit layout needed to support 2 SLI x16 Style connectors for SLI'd video cards. However the OEM only comes with one installed and an empty slot for the other. What resistors and the like would I need to add to the board in order to add the pcie x16 connector to the empty area on the board? I've already found a source for the actual slot, and I know I am going to need to add a resistor of some type to the empty resistor slot directly above where the PCIe slot will go. Beyond that I don't know what else I need to do, or what type of resistor is needed.
Oh yeah, and where can I go to buy the optional accessories for this board that came with the retail version? I would have prefered the retail version but the board I have came as part of a kit.

    Hello Tornath,
you have already mentioned yourself, that you have an OEM-Board, not an MSI-Retail Board. MSI does not provide end-user support for OEM products, as this is the responsability of the OEM Vendor who is selling OEM Boards under a different name.  Also, this forum will not support OEM Products and that is why I will have to close this thread.
However, before you waste huge amounts of your lifetime with trying to add a second PCI-Express Slot to your OEM-Board, let me explain to you, why your plan is rather pointless:
    1) The only OEM-Board of this class I know of, has the model number MS-7350VP.  If there ever was a marketing name, it would be called P6N Platinum (not P6N SLI Platinum), and there is one simple reason for that:
    2) This particular OEM Board has an NVIDIA nForce 650i Ultra Chipset (as opposed to the NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI), and if you look at the specifications for NVIDIA Chipset on the official NVIDIA Chipset Specification Site, you will see that this Chipset does not support the NVIDIA SLI™ Technology: http://www.nvidia.com/page/nforce_600i_tech_specs.html   .... That is basically why there is no additional PCI-Express Slot in the first place.   So even if you should succeed in adding a secondary PCI-Express Slot to the board physically, the chipset will render it more a less useless in terms of running two video cards in SLI mode.

Hi. I don't speak english very vell, so sorry
A bought an MSI K8N SLI Platinum mainboard, 7800 GTX Videocard and I don't know use it with NON SLI mode   If the SLI card there in NON-SLI mode, my pc isn't run. Just black screen, and the D-Bracket is show, that the booting is stopped in memory-control (second LED is red.) If I turn my SLI card for SLI mode, accordingly the PCI-E bus is 8x and my PC is run.
My problem is that, that I don't know run my pc in PCI-E x16
I tried 6 BIOS, but always was this is the problem

First, search the internet for a free translater program and cut n paste.  Second, you need to place the graphics card in the pcie slot next to the cpu.  Third, you need to make sure the SLI switch card is placed "non-sli" with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.  Finally, you need to make sure your SLI switch card is fully in place so the copper teeth dont show (I made that mistake and my rig didnt boot either).  Just my 2 cents.
    1st -- ok
2nd - the video card is there next to the cpu in 1st PCI-E bus
3rd -- the SLI switch card is placed non-sli with the arrow pointed towards the graphics card.
fin --- well, i have no idea about this, 'couse after i've removed the card, i could not push it back to its place fully anymore, so the copper teeth show up. I also tried to force it with a screwdriver, but it didn't work. but i can turn on the card holder
