Order of songs on compilation albums

Hi there!
I've just started to use iTunes as my mp3-player, and I'm quite satisfied. I really like the grouped with artwork feature. The only thing bothering me is that;
1.I want my songs in alphabetical order by the artist, but within the artist I want the albums sorted by release-year, not alphabetical. So I was wondering if there were any way of controlling this. This isn't a big deal though.
2.But my biggest problem is that my compilation albums(soundtracks and what have you not...) are sorted alphabetical after the artists on the album rather than the song number, even though I've checked the box for compilation album. Now, certain of these albums need to be played in the right order for it to make any sense, so could somebody help me here please!? (Oh, by the way; I've named all the songs' "Album Artist" the same as the album and sorted my playlist after that, so I get them all in one group...)

  • Changing artists names in iTunes is very slow (1 minute per song) in compilation albums

Changing artists names in iTunes is very slow (1 minute per song) in compilation albums. I am using iTunes 10.6.1 Mac OS X 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM 2.66 GHz Intel processor and my itunes library is 340GB. My new music is on the computer's hardrive (about 16GB) and the rest is in an external HD.
It used to work great until I switched to the new version of iTunes (10.6.1) and now changing the artist field is very very very slow (1 minute per song in compilaton albums)
What happened? Can someone help me?

Thank you both!!!!!!  Especially you, Limnos for adding onto the terrific answer from leonieDF.  Yeah, I'm seldom willing to let the software do the driving all by itself.  <heh>  However, to date I've been too lazy to work with what is currently there - and needing to know how to customize the software was my first step.
I'm finally going to reduce the enormous physical size of my cd collection - organizing and storing the jewel cases is too great a nightmare not to mention that it has turned my livingroom into nothing more than a visually overwhelming variety of storage devices--spinners being my favorite, but now mostly unavailable outside of yard sales.  Favorite disks I WILL keep to play in the car (no, my player is too old to have a USB port).
I'm getting a 2T external drive to hold the accumulation - but before that, I wanted to find out HOW to organize things so that I can find them myself - old school.  My ITunes libraries go back many years, but I now want a good cohesive way to save the way that I want - not the way that is set up for me.
Thank you both again very, very much!!

  • How do I edit the order of songs within an album?

I have my Ipod plugged in and need to fix the order of songs on a few albums. Can someone please let me know how to do this? Thanks a lot.

If the songs are in a playlist open iTunes then click on the playlist. Click on the number column (extreme left). Click on the song you want to move and drag it to where you want it to be. Right click on the playlist name and select "Copy to play order". Connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the change. If you are updating manually then you connect first and when the iPod appears in the source list carry out the process above directly in the playlist on your iPod. Make sure neither Shuffle or Repeat are switched on in the playlist, either of those can prevent you reordering tracks.
If the tracks are out of order in the library try this, I found that it works for me. Right click at the top of any column in your iTunes library and choose **Track Number** from the list. Click at the top of this new column to sort it and after that click on the Album column. If you like you can then click on Artist, it will continue to hold the track order as well. Afterwards anything you import should follow this arrangement Artist>Album>Track Number within Album (you can hide the track number column when you've done if you don't want it cluttering up the view)

  • ITunes mixes up the track order of songs within an album??

My iTunes mixes up the track order, and there is no way to specifically order it by track.  i have even gone and individually marked each song as ie(2 of 12) but it still lists them in a random order.  How can I make the songs fit in their original order?  And none of that "click at the top to order it by artist, album, or time etc," because it doesn't click above track number.

• In order to properly play my music on my DAC with a headless mac mini, I had to "check" the tunes in iTunes. When I did that, the songs in each album were put in not their proper order. How do I restore them to their original sequence in each album?

In order to properly play my music on my DAC using a headless Mac Mini, I had to make sure that all of the songs in "Music" were checked. To so so, I pressed the "check box." When I did that, all of the songs in each album were resequenced in not their proper order.
How do I restore the proper order of songs for each album?

In list view, select the album column. To choose which columns appear, select an item on the left side of the window (a playlist, for example), choose View > View Options, and select the information you want to see. You can also Control-click a column heading to select columns to display.
The column selected determines how tracks are displayed.  For example, clicking the "Name" column displays all tracks in alphabetical order; clicking the "Album" column displays the tracks in album order; clicking the "Date Added" column displays the tracks in the order that they were imported into your library.  Columns also have a disclosure arrow at the right of the column (when selected) that you can click to reverse the order.

  • Changing Order of Songs in Album-iTunes 12

Like the title says, how do I change the order of songs in a album? Before you could use get info and sort by track number.
    Thanks

    Hey Lando25,
I understand that you want to change order of songs that are playing in iTunes. This functionality should still be available to you, as confirmed in this article:
iTunes 12 for Mac: Edit song and CD information
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH19618
You may need to simply scroll in the information field in order to find the fields that you wish to edit. Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • Changes order of songs within album on iPod playback

My iPod classic now decides for itself what the order of songs on an album should be. The songs are listed in the correct order, but it essentially does a shuffle play when you go from one song to the next. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. The songs on the album are ordered correctly in iTunes, I checked the number in "Get Info" and that was correct. When I update my iPod Classic, they're all out of order.

  • How to show one album art image for a compilation album in cover flow view?

I just finished getting album art for my entire music collection. Now I go to the Cover Flow view or the Album view and individual songs in compilation albums each have their own album art instead of being grouped together under the same album art. For instance I have a "Buddha Bar" Album with various artists. Instead of having one image for the album, each artist has his or her own image (all the same Buddha Bar album art). So a compilation CD with various artists ends up having 15 images instead of one image in the Album art or Cover Flow view which makes it harder to look through my albums. Does anybody know if it is possible to change this?
    Imac PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

iTunes doesn't have the ability to do what you want, i.e. to define multiple separated values in a field and then have the item show up when looking at a selection based on each of those values. "Bob Dylan", "The Band" and "Bob Dylan & The Band" are three distinct values that can't be linked together. Sort values can change where in a list things are displayed but shouldn't be used to attempt to merge different values as results are undefined and unpredictable.

  • Compilation album problem at iOS 7!!!  [HELP]

(Sorry for inappropriate English, i'm not Native Speaker.)
So i used to edit some albums within various artists as compilation albums when i used iOS 6 numbering versions.
It was all good, the albums was all sorted and i could find which artists are participated, if i press A artist, the Music App showed me A's several songs in
    compilation album A artist participated.
after i used iOS 7, when i press A artist, the Music App does not show me only A's songs, but all of songs in compilation album A artist participated,
It making me seriously annoying, because, after iOS 7, The Music App doesn't show me what artists has made the song in the pannel of what songs in some Compilation album.
As you see, the image shows you guys Songs pannel though, when i see inside of some Compilation album, i
can see what artists has made the songs But IT WAS iOS 6
I couldn't find any fitting image so i captured my iPhone, anyway, as you see, the image shows you guys inside of some Compilation album,
and none of those songs shows me what artists has made!! How Could i find it when i want to what artists has made what songs?
The Problem is not just it, sometimes, no, often when i Press A artist who participated, the Music App shows me only A's song at Compliation album,
and then i press the Compliation album, still only A's song remain, but all of other artist's songs are gone!! and these songs can be search -.-
all those problems were not exist when i used iOS 6, after i use iOS 7, technically when i changed the phone to 5s from 4, all those Copilation album problems came up, I need some help desperately!
    (Sorry for inappropriate English agian.)

Thanks for all your help ...
The playlist option is viable, but it doesn't show up on the "browse section" and it wouldn't appear as an album ...
And copying songs again to another location is simply wasting space.
Is there any other way ?
What about creating a symbolic link ? Would that help ?

  • Sometimes when I play songs in Itunes by double clicking on them, Itunes will place the song as the first one on the album.  It will chnage the order of the songs on the album, and I can not switch them back to the correct order.

Sometimes when I play songs in Itunes by double clicking on them, Itunes will place the song as the first one on the album.  It will chnage the order of the songs on the album, and I can not switch them back to the correct order.  This onloy seems to happen when I double-click on the song to play it in itunes.  If I just hit play, this doesnt happen.  As a result, I have several albums now in which the songs are in the wrong order.  Its very frustrating, as this error then transfers over to my ipod every time I sync it.  When I choose the info. for the songs, it has them correctly listed (i.e., it lists the songs as being #1 of 19 on the CD, for example).  But then the song will have placed by Itunes as #5 of 19 for whatever reason.  Itunes does not do this every time, but does it with enough frequency to be maddening.  Any thoughts?

The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.
Back to how to re-link any de-linked tracks .
There may be scripts that can help re-link de-linked music files - or, at least provide you a list of such files, Scripts are easy to install and use...
at Dougs Scripts, there is one called iTunes Track CPR that might work
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
or, if you just want a list of de-linked tracks, go to
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
and find the script called List MIA's, this will create a text file listing all de-linked tracks

  • How can you get a compilation album to show up as one album rather than be split up but song and artist?

how can you get a compilation album to show up as one album rather than be split up by song and artist? I've got loads of albums on iTunes that are compliations and they are all mixed up by track/ artist. Even when you click 'show album' it still just shows the album title and then the artist in alphabetical order - so the album is replicated several times
Can anyone tell me how to amalgamate compliation albums please?

  • Order of songs in album retained in iTunes 6? Oldest OS for iTunes 7?

I still have iTunes 6 until I can make sure I can move up to an OS supporting all my current software and hardware (including digidesign 001 which interfaces my monitor speakers through a card in the back of my computer).
I notice that in iTunes 6, as I go and archive my music collection, songs are listed without the track number, and you only see the track number if you go to Get Info. I'm a little nervous that I'll lose track of which song belongs where in the album. Does iTunes 6 automatically keep them in track order within a single cd/album when I order the library by Artist name? And same for iTunes 7? This will also be pertinent when I archive my old vinyl albums to my hard drive.
As for iTunes 7, what is the earliest operating system it works with? Panther or Tiger? I'll try looking these questions up too. I'm also interested in what advantages iTunes 7 offers over iTunes 6.
I have had Panther and ilife 04 for a long time but not installed them due to concerns about my software not all being compatible. Eventualy I will be buying a new Leopard mac laptop and so all this worry about having the latest and greatest will be taken care of at that time, later in the spring. But for what's on my G4 at the moment, it's still Jaguar and it works with all my software and hardware. I'll inquire with digidesign about whether I can use Panther with my digi 001.

I also have two other questions. i can't yet find it in the Help file for iTunes 6 but I am not sure what the "part of a compilation" checkbox is for and why it can't tell itself. I have had two types of compilations: one where it's a single disc with various artists and one where it's a multi-disc compilation with one artist.
Also, I'm not sure what the "group with" blank is for (these are in Get Info). I'm trying to put all the proper notes in my Info settings and organize my library so that it's easy to use.
Does iTunes 7 do some aspect of this better?
If I "connect" to the internet to see gracetunes on this, will that wipe out all the detail I've added to track listings? Will it put any artwork with it? At present no artwork appears and I'm not sure what the artwork tab is for in Get Info. These are all for cd's i've previously bought and am archiving for myself.
Also, is there a quick way to get it to uncheck everything when it starts checking off songs automatically in my iTunes library?
I'm also interested in what "consolidate library" means.

  • Compilation Albums are not ordered by track order - by alphabet/artist

This is something I just noticed with iTunes that I would like to have fixed if possible. I've ripped a good handful of compilation albums onto my computer, and when I put them into iTunes, and order the songs by album, all of the differing artists on a certain album are in alphabetical order. Meaning, the track order is set not as track 1, track 2, track 3, etc. Instead, it's set up by artist, by alphabet. For example, Animosity will be first, and Zebrahead will be last...and these aren't in the correct order of the album! I don't know if there is a fix for this, but if there is, I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks.

    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you fix the other issues you are likely to run into as you try to organise your iTunes library.
    *Use an album friendly view*
iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together. The most useful order for editing the library is probably *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Artist until it reads Album by Artist.
    *One cover, too many tracks*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
*Album not with others by same artist*
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
    *One album, too many covers*
Sadly the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums which causes problems when some tracks list guest artists. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate this is not part of the actual song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
*One album, still too many covers*
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
*Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. BTW You can still give the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    *One artist, many names*
With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field.
