Ordered my first (mac)book today!

I ordered it a couple of hours ago, the white 2hgz version (as is) and a pink neoprene case. I don't know yet if the payment has been authorised- I used a Visa electron card- does anyone know if these are accepted? I haven't received any emails whatsoever from Apple, and I've checked my junk mail.

Thankyou all! I think there may be a delay in taking payment as I'm having it delivered to where I work- so I don't miss it!- which is not the same as the address for my debit card. I don't think it's sunk in yet, but when it's been despatched I'll be excited!
I'm looking forward to being able to move around and not have to sit at a desk, or watch films in bed, generally increase my laziness!
I've recently started full-time work after leaving university so this is my treat I will let you know how it goes.

I'm also a linux user who used it on the desktop for a while, and then I rebooted into windows, and oops...got stuck. Then I got a mac and I haven't really needed windows for the most part, and I can open up a terminal and write programs using emacs and gcc and all that...so it's pretty nice. Buy an external USB hard drive and copy your data to it. Either that or burn them all to single or double layer DVDs (depending on amount of data you have). Or if it's really a small amount, consider putting it all on a USB memory stick.

If you are indeed using 10.5.8 as indicated in your signature you will first need to upgrade to Snow Leopard; this is available in the Online Apple Store. You will then be able to uprade to Lion - again available in the Online Store where you will get a code to enable download from the App Store in Applications. This will enable you to use iCloud and run the latest iTunes.

I plan to get a mac book pro this month. I plan to use programs such as photoshop, illustrator, indesign, and dreamweaver on a daily basis.
I do not know if I should get the high end model :

I guess my concern is the dedicated graphics card as well as the speed of the programs, I do not want a year to pass and my computer is slower than ever.
Is the 2.6ghz really more noticable than the 2.3ghz. Does the graphics card 1GB difere from the 512 in terms of performance.
I tend to have two to three programs open.
I did not plan on exceed $2500 including apple care.

To keep you under or at the $2500 budget,
Go with the 2.3GHz one.
It has the screen you want so you don't have to buy an anti glare film/enclosure (extra expense)
I suggest you go with the 750GB Hard Drive at 7200RPM instead of the 1TB for speed purposes.
You really won't see that much of a speed difference.
As for the graphics part, unless your into graphic intensive games, you're fine with the 512MB video. Remember, some people are playing games with their 13' MB Pro that has built in graphics.

Just ordered my first Mac Mini

THis is goign to be my first apple computer. I do have the Ipad and have owned Ipods in the past, and was very happy with those. It's supposed to arrive today. I am truly unsure what to expect. I have seen people with the Macs and have drooled over them for many years. Yay Me.

You will be amazed at how true those words are.
Your Mini should come with Lion, which now will update to 10.7.2 if it is not already on there, and you can setup an account in iCloud...free...first 5 GB storage is free, and email, calendars, addressbook, and photos from streaming photos do not count as part of that 5 GB.
If you have iDevices, each can attach and sync via iCloud...terrific way to keep all of your calendars in one location and synced.
When you setup, if you haven't used Mac calendars before, wait 'til you see how easy it is to enter events on a calendar for home, one for work, etc...and they come out color coded so you can see instantly what the event is associated with. Enter information on your iPad and it will appear on your Mini, or whatever devices you have.

Firefox told me to get a new computer. With the limited knowledge I have and the searching I've done, I'm still not sure if there is a work around for me. Has apple stopped updating/supporting the operating system on my notebook? (OSX 10.5.8) If so, from what I have looked at so far, I'm not sure if I can upgrade the operating system of my notebook. Can I spend $30 and get "snow leopard"? (10.6.x) Is that right? I'm relatively new to the mac terminology, as this notebook was gifted to me. It seems that if I can go to "snow leopard", I'll have support, but for how long? Do you think it's worth $30? Thanks for your help.

First, make a backup and call Apple to buy Mac OS X Snow Leopard > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 Then, use DVD Sharing (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287) or the USB SupeDrive to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Finally, go to Apple menu > Software Update and update to the most recent version

Re my post earlier in this thread about the backspace key, I was wrong. On the Apple keyboard, the backspace key is called the "delete" key. It's really the "delete" key that missing IF you're used to using the delete key to delete text/numbers ahead of the cursor. From what I've observed, the only way to delete characters ahead of the cursor is to highlight them and then hit the delete key. Or move the cursor ahead of the characters to be deleted and then backspace them.
I know it's nit-picking, but I'm used to having separate backspace and delete key from my 25 years of DOS/Windows experience. However, I'm getting used to using the delete key for both functions now.
Another feature missing from my MacBook is a HD access light to tell me if my HD is being access when I load something.

Mac book pro freezes at login after upgrade to mavericks

I'm new to Apple and this is my first Mac Book Pro... I bought it Oktober last year...
Today i wanted to upgrade to Mavericks... All went well, the mac installed... and now it is done.... The system launches until the login screen and then freezes... I've been reading about it on al possible forums... Don't know what to do and in two days i leave abroad again far away from civilization... this mac is my only connection to home and the normal world so yes..i'm a bit desperate
I tried the cmd+R thing to reinstall the OS X - same result...
Bit afraid to do this erase thing cause i'm not sure to do it right - cannot really afford to loose data on this pc apart from the OS.
Stupid me i didn't make a backup with Time machine or something else... can anyone please help me out here ????
Any advice is welcome...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Bought my first Mac and am curious about the learning curve for FCE HD

After 30+ years in the DOS/Windows/PC world, I've ordered my first Mac -- a Mac Pro -- with Final Cut Express HD.
I was wondering if other switchers could give me an idea of the kind of learning curve I'm looking at. I have used Sony Vegas Video almost exclusively for the past 5-6 years.

I have no experience with Vegas so don't know what the similarities and differences will be.
People like Tom Wolsky (the main contributor to this forum) will be able to advise you on that.
I came from Premiere 6.5 and found the transition reasonably quick and pain-free.
I would suggest that you get an editing workshop book. Tom has written several but of course you will need FCE 3.5.
He guides you easily step by step from the complete basics (connecting the camera etc.) to a high level of editing skill.

How can I register a second hand mac book to my apple account?

I just bought a second hand mac book, and I would like to register it to ;y account to be able to access things (like my ibooks) registered from my iPad directly on my mac book.
the previous owner asked the apple supprt and they said I need to contact them to make them update the information about this mac book to my account, but I can't contact them because the mac book does not have any guarantee anymore ... I don't need a technical supprt, just need to update the mac book information to my accound.

thnaks for the answer. The previous owner asked apple care to disassociate the mac but they said that the new owner needs to contact them so that they can update the ownership (apparently they can't leave it with nobody).
In fact the previous owner erased the HDD, and as it is my first mac book, I did not have any licence to re-install it so we re-installed it with his accout.
