Ordering Folders

Hi,
I've been trying to figure this out without success. Is it possible to organise the Folders section (left-hand side of the screen) by date, rather than by name alphabetically? This is the way I'd like to work, but I'm not sure it's possible.
Cheers, Olly.

That's not quite what I meant. If you invoke the Import option in File (right at the beginning) the pulldown date options only have the ones that are shown and there is no way to either edit those or add to them. I realize that the user has 8 possiblities ("Into one folder" and 7 "By Date") but these are the options determined by Adobe and not 'by user'. Yes, it is better than only 1...or none...but still I think there should be the means/ways to change those.
Say, for example, someone likes to organize by YMD but with spelling out of the the month (eg. 2008MAR29) or perhaps prefers underscores (eg. 29_03_08) or any number of different ways (eg. 2008~03~29). Should we not have the option/power to change these things? After all the options that are given to use only are used to name a folder and do not do anything to the actual workings of the program.
However, if I understand you correctly, once we use one of these date options for an import we can change it in the 'used' window directly below the "Organize:" field and the modified version will stay for later imports and be changable? I guess I'll have to try this out.
As it is I prefer to name my folders in this manner...
"080330-Shoot Name" and the files as in this manner...
"080330-Shoot Name-original image number.CR2"...or ".DNG"
What I have to this point been doing is to insert my card into the reader, invoke Windows Explorer, make a folder where I want it, name the folder to what I want, open up a window with the files on the card, copy them from card to folder, close out after copying, start up a rename program, edit the file name parameters and within seconds all the files are named as I prefer in a folder named as I prefer. It's only then that I 'import in place' within LR.
Yes, my method is a kludge but I have full control of where things go and how they are named *before* I start up LR. This cannot be fully automated (due to changing dates and names) but it is SO much faster than doing it through LR.

  • Is it possible to cusomize the layout of the manual ordering dialog?

    Hello all,
I have a question about the layout for manual ordering.
The user should be able to order folders under a specific path manually. So I create a new layout set and add the UI Command "order_type_settings". So far, everything works fine. My question is, if it is possible to customize the layout of the organize folder dialog? The problem is, that the users are able to see the details dialog, if they open the context menu of a folder. Is there a possibility to restrict this context menu?
    Thanks a lot.
    Kind regards.
    Nicole

    Hi Nicole,
Yes, you can. It's possible to restrict the context menu.
As you see, you must use layout set. Each layout set use: Collection Renderer, Resource Renderer and details command. Each one of these, use command groups for folder, links and files.
You can create a new command group in order to limit it.
You should duplicate a layout set, and then you can assign it to a folder or your navigation iview.

  • Can't sort files and folders

    Two questions:
    1. In a folder I want to sort the items in order allways folders first and second files by namne but sometimes the folders last. Is it any way to solve this? The Mac mixed sorting makes me mad.
    2. When in Finder-menu View the choice Clean Up and Arrange by is grey and can't be used. How come? Is it possible to make these choices active?
    Svante

It's always frustrating when the designers didn't think to do it 'your' way. But we all figured out how to drive cars that were built 'their' way and we can do this too. The fact that MicroSoft did it another way, just is not relevant to working with your Mac. We're still coping with sillyunderscoresover here, and now our apps quit on us when we close their windows.
You like a hierarchy that puts folders before individual file items: Make a folder, call it "Directories" (or even better " Directories", or "•Folders"), put all your folders in that window into it, and if you want, make a companion "Documents" folder for everything else. Click the flippy triangles of both to reveal their contents. There, everything in list order, folders first. You will have to do a teensy bit of handfiling you're not used to, but as others mentioned a simple naming convention would have spared you that (and this suggestion). If you truly hate the look, you can make invisible custom icons for the two folders and use a style like:"••••••Folders•••••", "-----Files----" so they look like headers.
People have complained about missing this Windows 'feature' before without ever convincing me of its virtue. I can see which items are folders and don't need them artificially at the top (Sort by kind does that if ever I do) and find the integrated alphanumeric list useful for grouping unfiled documents near their folders. When I want the first item(s) on the list to be a folder, I so name it. You can cope, just like you can learn to navigate a new subdivision with all the cul-de-sacs. Now if I could just get used to this silly idea North Americans have that we should drive on the right.

  • PSE 11 Organizer shows broken images on almost all jpgs

    1. I spent three days reorganizing all of my 90,000+ photos, putting them in hierarchical date ordered folders on my Windows 7 PC with 16GB RAM, lots of HD space on my second HD E (recently installed from an older laptop but with 700GB, 60% available).
    2. I rebuilt a new catalog using just the new folders of the 90k plus images.
    3. The first time I tried to rebuild the catalog, Organizer crashed with an "unusual runtime error".
    4. I broke the rebuild down into three smaller pieces adding new folders of 30k images at a time and by midnight last night I had a new catalog.
    5. Bring up the new catalog this morning and most of the images show a broken image. I can edit the jpgs, save them, etc in the editor, etc.
    6. I've turned off face recognition, checked for errors in the catalog (none but corrected anyway). Show all files. Reset editor preferences. None of this helps.
    7. All RW2 files show up, some PSD files do and some do not. Same with JPG's - a very few appear and most show a broken image.
    8. The first time I scrolled through the images, trying to see anything, Organizer would show the image briefly, then go to a broken image.
    9. The "Location" link to the file (I just discovered this) in the Information tab on the right, show the correct file location and that file (which can be edited after all) is just fine. Windows shows the file.
    10. If you edit a file from Organizer, the broken image is repaired. So, a workaround would be to put all 90k images into the PSE editor. I don't think I have that much time...
    11. Task Manager shows 40% CPU and 40% memory usage, btw.
    Ideas, please?

Also, I am now trying to install PSE 12. One of the first instructions is to click Install Adobe Photoshop Elements in the Adobe Photoshop Elements dialog box. When I insert my disc in my DVD drive I don't get a PSE dialog box at all, just the Windows Autoplay dialog box asking what I would like to do with this disc. I can't believe I'm having to ask a question about installing a program from a disc! I'm pretty sure it's just me...

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler - integration with subversion

I just discovered the release of SQL Developer Data modeler, and found this to be very interesting.
We are still using Oracle Designer for database design, but we are looking for a replacement (for several reasons).
    My question is quite simple:
Given that the modeler uses a filebased repository, and also given that we have several developers potentially working on a data-model at the same time, how does Data Modeler integrate with subversion for source control etc.?
Can the repository itself be under source control, and checked in/out directly from Data Modeler?
Or will only the output files be candidates for version/source control?
Let me admit right away that I have not read much of the data modeler docs, and I have also not downloaded/installed it (yet), but does anyone have pointers to docs on this , or general input/knowledge around it.
On a side note, I must say that it puzzles me that a company like Oracle, that delivers one of the best databases doesn't use its database engine to host the repository, but instead chooses to go for files (I assume xml) "scattered all over the place"....
Well, I guess they a have a reason for it..
    Anyway:
Sql Developer Data Modeler and Subversion anyone?
    Jens

    Hi Jens,
It's early days and the initial implementation is indeed file based. Though I'd say not xml files "all over the place", but in ordered folders. Yes, as a database company it does make sense that we'd have a repository for managing and versioning metadata. However the tool supports Oracle and other databases and many companies use open source version control tools, such as Subversion and so anyone using the Data Modeler today can use it with Subversion regardless of the database they are designing for.
We do plan to have a repository, but in the 6+ months of the early adopter program found that many of the early adopters were happy to place the files under source code control using Subversion and in so doing also managed the multi-user development.
Integrated Subversion support is planned for a future release.

  • Converting Managed to Referenced: how keep folder structure?

I am considering converting my managed lib to referenced, and have been experimenting with a duplicate library.
I highlighted "Projects" at the top of the Library view, and then relocate masters.
In the Subfolder Format box I chose "Project name"
I did the test relocation, and all the projects are in the new location in a single alphabetical list. My Folder year stucture has not carried through.
I see I could have used "Image/year/month" which might have kept the years, but would it have kept my projects intact?
Also some of my projects have images for different years in them, which presumably would be broken up by a "image year month" option".
    Any inputs very welcome.

Ah I hadn't realised you wanted to relocate the entire library in one pass.
Yep folder names within Aperture sound like a great solution.
You should probably set up and test a small sample library before you press play though.
So you could arrange your projects in Aperture a bit before your started, grouping projects into logically named and ordered folders.
You could then set one of two presets: foldername/projectname or even foldername_projectname
The first should create a folder on the finder named after the Aperture folder followed by subfolders named after the project name contained within it.
So root level folder will be 2010 with subfolders project F and project C (you could add a counter to order them too)
The second should produce folders at the same finder level but with a naming structure containing both the foldername and the project name. So if the foldername was 2010 then your finder folders would be named 2010_project C, 2010 project F etc.
You could then jump back into Aperture and rename your folders and projects as before!

Updating AUR package jre 7-3 to 7u3-1 prior to pacman -Syu worked for me.
Ended up manually updating  jre 7-3 to 7u3-1 as packer said it was up to date.

So, I went to File/Add Folder to Library. When I did this, the Podcasts were dumped into my iTunes Podcast library all over the place in a disorderly fashion. So much for the orderly folders. Can someone please tell me what is going on here ?
PS It's worth mentioning that before they disappeared from the iTunes library, they were in the same neat and orderly folders as on my hard drive. I have no idea why they decided to disappear.
PPS. I use iTunes 10.5 on Windows 7.

iTunes>edit>preferences>advanced>importing tab, the box that states "retrieve CD track names from the internet" must be checked, so iTunes can connect with CDDB to look up the information for the CD you are trying to import.
As a new poster in the forums, I need to make a suggestion. You have posted in the Mac forum when your issue should really have been posted in the Windows forum. This is probably why no one has responded to you.

  • Note Transfer

I have extensive notes on my Palm that I would like to transfer to my iPhone. These are active files that I update regularly. How do I transfer files from the Palm format to the iPhone format without losing any data?

    http://www.google.com/search?q=palmnotes+toiphone
The Missing Sync family include a migration assistant that promises to help import things from the previous phone, that might help, though they don't give a lot of information.
    http://www.markspace.com/
I think you should approach this task from the other direction, assuming this is a one-time transfer and you are moving from the Palm to using the iPhone for those tasks and will be updating the notes on the phone henceforth. Not: "how do I get the notes from Palm?" but "what do I want to do with the notes on the iPhone?"
The default note support is fairly basic---there is a built in Notes app, without any rich text formatting, and all notes are in a flat list that is always ordered by date of last modification. Those notes will sync to Notes in Mail (OS 10.5.7 only) or Outlook, and edits on the computer will sync back. They will only sync via iTunes over the cable. You can also email them out.
However, you may prefer a third-party option for notes, that will allow alphabetical order, folders, categories, rich text formatting, etc. Is syncing with a desktop version important to you? Or with the cloud? Are your notes also to-do lists? etc. (Check EverNote, ShoveBox, OmniFocus---http://appshopper.com pulls info from the App Store but is easier to browse for options)
Once you have figured out what program you want to be using on the iPhone, then figure out how to get the notes in there, because the process will likely be different depending.
You'll also want to find out what the export options are on the Palm.

  • Reorganizing Bookmarks (Imported from IE)?!

I'm an ex-Internet Explorer user and I just installed Safari. All my bookmarks were automatically imported from IE - nice touch. One problem, though: I could never get several bookmarked folders in the right (alphabetical) order in IE and, of course, that's the order they were imported in by Safari.
In IE, there was an "Add/Organize" tool I could use to create and move folders around, but it didn't always work. (Hence the problem with out-of-order folders.)
Is there a similar tool, or some way I can move bookmarked folders around, in Safari? (I tried grabbing and moving them, but that didn't work out.)
    Thanx.

Thanks, but that's where I was trying it: within "Show All Bookmarks". Doesn't work, at least not for me. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but all I'm doing is dragging & dropping ... except the "line" indicating where it'll be placed when I go to drop it (Folder C1, from my earlier example) isn't in between the two folders (Folder B & Folder C2). Instead, it lines up _square on_ Folder B and ends up a sub-folder of Folder B, instead of its own folder. (Maddening.)
I decided to start the slow, arduous task of re-saving bookmarks in Safari as I go: each time I open a bookmark from the "Imported Internet Explorer Favorites" folder (already created by Safari in the left panel), I'd create a folder of its own and make a "Safari" bookmark in it in the left panel, deleting the corresponding "Internet Explorer" bookmark.
Problem is, when I tried dragging the bookmark from the expanded "Imported Internet Explorer Favorites" (in the right panel) over to the new "Safari" folder (in the left panel), the bookmarked web site opens up and I can't do it. And all I'm doing is a single, left click, holding the left-mouse button down ... and it won't drag - it opens the site! (Maddening.)
    Any suggestions?

  • I have mac version 10.10.1 yosemite.Using LR3. I exported 7 sub folders from LR to an external hard drive in order to free up space on my mac hd.

    encountered two problems:
    1. instead of seeing the 7 sub folders in the external drive, all the images are out of order, entirely scrambled. when I open LR3 however, the contents of these folders are greyed out and show 0 images. I can see the question mark next to the image saying it is located elsewhere (i.e. on the external hd)If I plug in the external hd I can open the images and edit in CS5, but as I said it 's like finding a needle in the haystack.
    2. no new space shows up on my mac hd even though that was the reason I made the export.
is there a way to fix this? I have a different external hd that backs up LR. Currently it is not plugged in. I am afraid to plug it in because it will take the new LR configuration and I'd lose any  option to correct the problem. I also , on the same (different) hd I have Time Machine backup. would that help to fix the problem and bring back the organization I previously had with the 7 subfolders. All that organization is currently lost,i.e. show as greyed out 0 content in LR on my mac hd and shows as scrambled on the external hd.
    Can I fix this??

zarowin, you want to move the files. Not export them! See here: Move folders around in Lightroom | Adobe Photoshop Lightroom tutorials. There are two ways to do that. One is to move the folders inside Lightroom to your external HD, the other is to move them in the finder and reconnect the folders afterwards using the tips in the link dj linked to above. Also, you really should upgrade your Lightroom. LR 3 is not fully Yosemite compatible. I think the problems are mostly cosmetic though.
Periodically I get a prompt in lr asking if I want to back up lr and I have been consistent about doing so. At this point however, since those out of order images have be “exported”  (am I using the right word??) to the second external hd, into a folder without subfolders, (hence the scrambling effect), if I were to plug in the external hd that is my backup drive (for time machine as well as for lr), won’t it be backing up the mistake I made by not using subfolders ongto the other external drive, thereby compounding the problem?
This warning has nothing to do with Time Machine. It is Lightroom's own backup. Every week or so, it will generate a backup Library that you can revert to in the case of trouble. In fact,  you can usually safely delete the very old ones but keep them from the last month or so. Look for them in a folder called "Backups" right next to your main catalog file (probably in your Pictures folder). Be sure to only throw away the oldest backups. If you have never done this and have a large catalog with 10's of thousands of images you probably have easily 100 GB of these backups. Just calculate how much space you are wasting if you started doing this around LR 3, several years of backup catalogs at a frequency of once a week, and a typical catalog size of 1.5 GB (my main catalog is over 2GB).
Lastly, Time Machine backup doesn't overwrite older versions. It keeps versions around of all your catalog files (including the backups!).

  • HT4796 I can't see where are the folders that I had in my old PC on my new Mac after the migration. Even when I see it on my Mac using the search box, it doesn't appear with the right order of my old PC. I need some help, please.

I used the Migration utilitie from Lion and eventhough I know the folders are there (with a quick search I find images etc) the proper order is not displayed.

  • All my folders display in finder in alphabetical order a to z. However when I add a file as an attachment to an email the window that opens for me to select the folder from now displays them in alphabetical order from z to a. How can I alter it? Thank you

All my folders in finder show as in alphabetical order a to z. However, when I access them because I want to attach one to an email they display as z to a. How can I change this? it's been annoying me for ages. Many thanks.

When you add an attachment and you open a window to locate it, click on the little arrow I've indicated on the image and it should re-organise them as you want:

  • HT201320 Does my email service provider have to provide the ability for me to create an IMAP email account in order for me to create Sub-folders within Apple Mail?

Hi, Apple Mail provides a function to create sub-folders within my mailbox so that I can group emails of similar subjects or from the same sender. My service provider only provides POP email protocol and the New Folder button does not appear in my Apple Mail account for that service provider. Icloud provides the opportunity for the iPad user to select between POP and IMAP. I can select IMAP and the New Folder button appears allowing me to create sub-folders within the icloud email account. Does this mean I cannot create sub-folders in my email account unless my service provider provides customers with the option of creating an IMAP email account?
This appears to be a problem for quite a few Apple Mail users, but service providers appear reticent to provide a response other than 'use Microsoft Exchange / Hotmail, Google GMail, or some other third party email service provider'. This is why I have chosen icloud as my email service provider. It is Apple and therefore Apple supports it. I have been a Telstra customer for over 15 years and they informed me today, strongly, that they support their own products and services, not Apple products, even though Telstra sell them. When I asked the Telstra Customer Support Manager whether they support Telstra customers, I was informed 'no, because the Telstra customer is not a Telstra product or service'. I have since cancelled my Telstra email account and am in the process of cancelling all of my Telstra services.

Yes. That is what it means. You need an IMAP account in order to create sub folders on the iPad.
