Organising files and documents

I have just converted to mac and love it. Only I cant seem to organise my documents into folders
as in Word. Is there a way to do this. I have searched the forum etc but no joy.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
Organizing files on a Mac is very similar to a PC. On a PC you don't use Word to organize files, you use Windows. On a Mac you use the Finder.
I have a feeling your question is related more to what you're seeing (or not seeing) in a save dialog box. By default, OS X shows a simple save box. Click on the down-facing triangle, called a disclosure triangle, to expand the save box to a Finder-like column view. You can create new folders to save files into.
If you want to reorganize files & folders you already have, you need to be in the Finder. You might like to check out a couple of tutorials Apple has put together for switchers & other new Mac users - Switch 101 & Mac 101.

  • I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents?

I am using MS Office 2010 and Windows XP Professional, can I use iCloud for backup of my files and documents? I am planning to transition to a Mac so using the iCloud seems to make the most sence.

No, it is not a backup method at all.  If you delete a sync'd file on any device, you delete it permanently from iCloud.  That by its very essence is not a backup solution therefore.  A backup solution does not automatically and simultaneiously delete the file everywhere when it is deleted from the original source.
iCloud is strictly a syncronization tool for using files on multiple internet connected devices.

  • How can I transfer my files and documents from external hard drive to my new MacBook Air?

I recently bought a new MacBook Air and I would like to transfer my files and documents which I already saved in my external hard drive to this new mac. Unfortunately, I have not been able to do it so far. I tried to drag some files but the rest of the documents cant be transferred.
I appreciate it if anyone could help me in thsi regard.

Describe exactly what you did when it failed and the error message you received that told you it failed. Dragging and dropping files from one drive to another will work. Having said that  however, you need to be aware that trying to copy items with the same name will result in a warning dialog box offering several different options including canceling.
To better help you it would also be helpful to know about the external drive. Did you use TimeMachine to back up to that external drive? Did you copy files from another computer to the drive?

  • I installed and performed the Migration Assistant to transfer all my files and documents from my PC to iMac.  Nothing shows up in Finder on imac but Boot Camp Assistant window is on the screen. What is it, is it necessary, how do I proceed?

I installed and ran Migration Assistant on my PC to tranfere files and documents to my iMac.  The process seemed to go as directed until the end when "Boot Camp Assistant" showed up on my iMac screen.  There was no mention of this in the Migration Assistant info. It seems I cannot proceed without it. What is it for, is it required, what is the process?

  • Cant see files and documents.

I just migrated all the contents from an older macbook pro over to a brand new 13" macbook pro retina display. While I can see all the apps are good, I cant see any of my files and documents! So I tried to re-do the migration all over again. It then it said "not enough space". So I know that the files and docs are here on this computer but i cant see them anywhere. Any help would be nice. Thanks in advance. B.

Do you have Adobe Reader installed on you phone?

  • If i install new OS (Mavericks ) am i going to loose my files and documents

If i install new OS (Mavericks ) am i going to loose my files and documents like  ?

Not unless you erase your drive first. However, if you cannot backup then I suggest you wait until you get home. Your copy of Mavericks will still be there for your to download.
Or download it now and make a bootable backup to a flash drive while waiting to get home.
Get an 8 GB USB flash drive.
Partition GUID and format Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
Download the Mavericks installer. Quit the installer immediately after it starts up.
Download Lion DiskMaker 3.0b3 and use it to make your flash drive installer.

  • How do i recover lost files and documents?

how do i recover lost files and documents?

Way 1. Recover Deleted Text Messages on iPhone with Backups
    1) Recover lost files on iPhone from iTunes Backup
As you know, every time you sync your iPhone with iTunes, it will automatically make a backup of your iPhone contents including photos, SMS, reminders, contacts and more. Step 1. Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone to your computer. Step 2. Choose "Recover form Backup" option. Step 3. Select a backup you need. If you don't know which one to choose, you'd better choose the latest backup. Step 4. Click "Start Scan". Step 5. Preview contents in details and select lost files you need. Step 6. Click "Recover".
    2) Recover Deleted documents on iPhone from iCloud Backup
You should make sure that you have backup in iCloud before recovery. Go to Settings < iCloud. Log in to your Apple ID and toggle the Contacts switch from ON to OFF. Then turn it ON and choose Merge on the pop-up message. Then all contacts in the iCloud backup are back to your iPhone 4S.
Way 2. Recover Deleted files on iPhone without Backups
While if you don’t have any backup files in iTunes or iCloud, the unique way is to recover with iPhone Data Recovery. Step 1. Connect your iPhone to the computer and Run the software. Step 2. Click "Start Scan" > Scan data on your iPhone quickly. Step 3. Preview and select lost files you need. Step 4. Click "Recover" to recover them.

  • I'm about to transfer the contents of my existing HDD in my (dead PSU) iMac to another computer. I'm just wanting to know if and how I will be able to access my files and documents from the old hard drive once I've made the backup?

I'm about to transfer the contents of my existing HDD in my (dead PSU) iMac to another computer. I'm just wanting to know if and how I will be able to access my files and documents from the old hard drive once I've made the backup?

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • How do I change the order of files and documents in adobe acrobat 9, in the Portfolio??

I have been searching for 3.5 hours now and can't find the answer to this. Please help! I have created a portfolio in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, which has three files and three documents, the last step is just to arrange them in the right order. If you can please list step by step.
    THANK YOU!!!!!!

I think you can remove suggestions from the address bar by arrowing down to the unwanted site on the auto-suggest drop-down list and pressing Delete.
Make sure to arrow to another site or edit the address before pressing Enter or using Go, because that deleted URL will still be the address bar.
    Does that work?

  • All in files and documents folder is gone?

Just upgraded from Lion to Mavericks and all in the documents, picture etc... folder is gone (it's total emty), just like a formatted harddrive :-(. No mails accounts available any more (besides the iCloud account, which I don't really use)
The backup in Time Machine is not accessable of some reason - I can see it but not restore.....
    Any suggestions...PLEASE

You might try data recovery software. If your photos are jpeg files and not raw, programs like
Disk Drill: http://www.cleverfiles.com/  can retrieve the image files, but not restore your library.  How many photos can be recovered, will depend on how full your drive has been, and how much you have written to your drive, since you cleaned the drive.
However, Disk Drill is not free. It will be an expensive lesson to get your photos back. You can run the program for free in trial mode, to see, if it can find any files, but to save them, you will have to buy the app.
If you are considering to do that, stop immediately to use the mac, for anything that might write to the disk and erase more of the files.
BTW: you remembered to look into the Trash in your  Dock, did you?

  • Importing Mail file and documents from another account on same Mac

    Hi,
I a new to Mac. Have a great new iMac. It's all working fine.
Initially to simplify things I have set up everything under the main admin account (mine).
In particular, I have installed both my and my wife's e-mail account documents in the Mail and Documents folders of the master account.
Now that we're 'stable', I have set-up a separate account for her such that we keep our preferences, e-mails and documents separate.
When setting-up her account I now can't find how to import 'her' folders from the Master account Mail application and Documents folder. Indeed, those folders appear grey and unaccessible from her account (I guess that's the basic idea abut separate account but I am nevertheless looking for ways to move those files.
    Any pointers?
    Tx,
    AH

login to the main account and drag the folders to the "Drop Box" folder in her "Public" folder (in her home folder in "Users" at the top level), the go to her account to move the to the correct locations.

  • How do I transfer files and documents from one user account to another?

How do I transfer documents and files from one user account to another?

You haven't understood me. Follow these steps:
    1. Log in the user where are the files you want to transfer, and open a Finder window.
    2. In Finder, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type /Users/Shared. Now you're on Shared folder, so leave that window.
    3. Open a new Finder window without closing the old one, go to the folder with the files you want to transfer, and copy them to Shared folder.
    4. After copying the files to Shared folder, go to  > Log Out, and log in the other user.
    5. Repeat the step 2, and you will get access to the transferred files. Now, you can open them directly from this folder, or you can copy them to a folder on your user folder

  • How do I use AirDrop to share files and documents between my iPad and computer?

Even directly plugging in my two devices to eachother I cannot get my documents onto both of my devices unless I go through a rediculously long route to do so. The only reason I got the IPAD was to NOT have to go save afile on my computer, email it to myself, switch to my ipad, open my email, open attachment into Textius (the app I PAY FOR), save it onto the device. I have 26 items to do this to. I can do this faster on my phone because my comuter recgnizes it as a device at least i can drag and drop there! I paid too much money to deal with this ****. air drop doesnt work for me and I would like to understand why in the world it doesnt work between my own devices.

AirDrop does not work cross-platform. Not sure where you got that impression. It only works OS X to OS X, or iOS to iOS.
In the upcoming major software releases this Fall, iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, AirDrop will work cross-platform, but not right now.

  • How do I find previously downloaded files and documents?

I've seen a page in the Finder which contains all my previuosly downloaded files - such as downloaded movie clips and jpegs. I can't find it again. How do I access this?

    1154/3600
    Hello again Stevie,
    Finding the path:
Do not search for "Desktop" in Spotlight.
Search for a mpeg or a jpg file name that you can remember, that you downloaded.
Even part of the name should suffice to display a number of files. Now, to see the path, you can leave the mouse pointer on it a few seconds, until it appears on top in place of the pointer,
    or,
you can choose the "Show All" Spotlight view, then trace the paths, informations etc from the window. (BTW you can also use this window to move files to another place.)
From the Spotlight window, open the folder where your found file is.
    Better:
open the upper folder in the path chain, the one that contains your folder.
    "Greyed":
I don't understand where/how you can see them greyed, so tell me,
is it that when doing your Spotlight search for "Desktop", you opened "Desktop & Screensaver" (as Top Hit) instead of "Desktop"?
If that's the case, and if you can see the pictures you're looking for through System Preferences' "Desktop & Screensaver", then you can see the name of the folder where they are stored, in the left column.
Do not pay attention to this if not, as the "Desktop route" won't lead anywhere if you cannot see the files icons all simply displayed on your screen.
You already moved them somewhere else.
--> Stick to the first "Finding the path" method,
and post back the name (and path) of the folder where Spotlight locates them.
    Good luck!
    Axl
