Organising itunes by genres and styles

Hi
My iTunes library became through the years a very large database with music.
I have now more than 3000 albums in my collection
And a lot of different genres and styles.
Till now I didn't care about the genre and style.
I had a complete different way of organising them.
I'm starting the realise that I should reorganise everything.
It's gonna be a huge work, I think
Something that looks pretty poor in iTunes, is the classification by genre and style.
Doesn't seem very obvious to me in iTunes.
Cause of the many genres that overlap each other, it looks difficult to organise.
I have many albums that are a mixture of Jazz, funk, afrobeat, afrofunk, world, ...
Also a lot of them, go to electronic, dub, reggae, ...
I had a closer look to discogs.com
Their way of classification looks pretty good to me.
I checked a lot of albums on their site, and it looked close to what I wanted.
But how giving multiple genres and subgenres (styles) to 1 album.
Except giving them in the same tag the different genres and subgenres
But then I will have a lot that starts with jazz
And the result will be a huge list with different genres like
- jazz / funk
- jazz / soul
- jazz / afrobeat
- jazz / afrofunk
- jazz / afrobeat / electro
- jazz / afrobeat / dub
Also it must be very well ordered, and not having
- jazz / afrobeat / funk
- jazz / funk / afrobeat
it's the same genres, but will be shown as different genres in iTunes
Anybody any idea.
Is there also any automatisation possible in this huge upcoming work

There is only one official genre field.  However, just because a field is called something doesn't mean you have to put that information into that field.  For example I don't use Beats Per Minute but I do have a 3 digit code I use for some tracks that I put into that field and just remember that's what I use BPM for.  I put album label information into the Grouping field. You could put a second genre into that if you so wished.  You still won't be able to list by genre and sub genre though.  You're limited to what is offered.  You can make suggestions to Apple to change iTunes to add more genre fields but this may go again some sort of tagging standard, and frankly I don't see a lot of people here complaining about it so I don't think it will be put high on their list.

Oh, I guess if you're a genius at Applescripting you could write a script ot parse the genres and subgenres out of the genre field and create a manually ordered playlist based upon that.

  • HELP! iTunes reclassified my band's genre and now I don't show up in search results

I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post. My problem is fairly unique and I'm just not sure how to go about it. Please point me in the right direction if I've made a mistake.
Okay, so here's the deal: I'm a musician who releases piano tributes to popular music under the name Molotov Cocktail Piano. My record label, CC Entertainment, has always set my genre category as "Rock." I'm not sure exactly why, but this has been the case since I began recording and releasing last June. Some time within the last week or so, Molotov Cocktail Piano's genre has been reclassified to Pop>Tribute along with many other (but, for some reason, not all) tribute acts, which in and of itself is no big deal to me but now MCP doesn't show up in the search results. My label thought at first that perhaps iTunes was blacklisting the word "tribute" as most of my album's titles use the word. However, I noticed that some other groups' albums that have the word "tribute" in their title still show up. After a closer inspection, I came to the conclusion that any tribute group or artist that has been reclassified to Pop>Tribute doesn't show up and any tribute group or artist whose genre remains unchanged still DOES show up. Take, for example, MCP's "Tribute to Taylor Swift: 1989." Before this switch, anyone choosing to search for "Taylor Swift" could scroll through her official releases and the many tribute albums dedicated to her. My tribute had been selling reasonably well and was listed near the top of the list after her official releases. Now after the reclassification, my album doesn't show up at ALL for the "Taylor Swift" search term, whereas some others still do. I feel certain that this is an unintentional mistake that somehow didn't get addressed when iTunes created the new Pop>Tribute genre and that it just needs to be brought to the attention of the right person to make what would seem to be an easy fix. In the mean time, however, I am losing sales with every passing day and iTunes is losing their percentage on those sales. The timing is just terrible, with the Christmas season upon us. Could someone PLEASE help?
    Sincerely,
    Rob Weber

when you play the CD in your laptop on your home screen a Cd should pop up under the name of the album. Than when you open itunes it will probly say something like "let this CD download" or something like that. If it doesn't than automaticlly while the CD is importing to your itunes a page will pop up with a progess of the CD download.
    Hope that helped.

  • Get rid of Genre and Link to iTunes store

In list mode and using the browser, I want to get rid of the Genre column. Does anyone know how to do this on the new iTunes. I just hate having it there. Also, I'd like to get rid of those arrows that bring me to the iTunes store. On the old iTunes I did this. Any help would be much appreciated

This has been talked about several times.
    See:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1701047&tstart=45
You have to open a new Terminal window and type the following:
*defaults write com.apple.itunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE*

I've called the Apple helpline. The only way to organise music on the iPod classic, is to use playlists. They themselves can be organised in playlist folders.

It would be nice if you told others the steps you've tried and/or how you used to have your setup.
Anyway have you tried tapping MORE this will then bring you to
the selection-list of Audiobooks, Genres, Compilations & Composers.
Selecting Genres gives you a list of all your music split into genres which was set within the Music downloaded via iTunes or uploaded from CD or which you may have set yourself.
Then you just select the Genre you want:
If certent songs are not correctly gategorised you may need to go into iTunes and reselect via Get-info
    >Info>Genre and change it there. That way you should end up with all songs of Jazz or other in 1 place.

  • In itunes under genre the word "acostic" should be acoustic... correct? Can I correct this?

In itunes, under genre, the word "acostic" should be acoustic... correct? Can I correct this?

All it means is that you ned to plug it into a computer and restore the iPhone using iTunes.  This doesn't necessarily mean it was jailbroken.

Why no tleave them spread out I hear you ask... That is not practicable. I then have 12 pages to scan rather than just two. I need a solution... :-P

I realize this is an old thread but I'm having the same problem after upgrading my software today. Kinda surprised there are no solutions at all with 88 views.  I have an iPod touch btw, not an iPhone, but it prob wouldn't make much difference in this case.
The thing is, I get the screen(s) looking EXACTLY as I want on iTunes...just perfect (which is what I believe everyone else is experiencing as well).  When we go to sync tho, it does whatever it wants to do.  After syncing, all the apps are there, it's just that for me, it puts them in some type of random order.  I have 72 apps and this is absolutely ridiculous!
Thanks in advance for any fixes anyone might have...

  • Organising iTunes Directories

    Hi
I've recently ripped some old presentations that I had on CD into my iTunes folder.
I wanted to keep these talks out of my general music folders and so was hoping to keep the talks in a second, seperate folder similar to the music one.
Is this even possible? If so, how would I do it?

You can create multiple iTunes libraries and put these files in a new separate library, however you can only have one iTunes library active at a time. If I remember you do this by holding down the Control key when launching iTunes.
Alternatively, you can in iTunes preferences, turn off the option to organise your files automatically, and then iTunes will let you add files from any location but will not copy the files in to its own folders.

  • Organising iTunes

Ok, sorry if this annoys anyone but im a bit of a neat freak, anyway, i recently upgraded my iTunes to iTunes 7 on my iMac, and it reorganised my files to places i dont want them, for example artists beginning with a number as opposed to a letter, used to be at the start, they are now placed at the end, as are artists whos names begin with symbols, does anybody know how to make iTunes organise it so numbers and symbols come before letters?
Also does anybody know how to make your folders in your music iTunes folder organise so it ignores the "The" for example the Beatles are way down in the T section, but id kinda like it in the B section.
Sorry for being such a neat freak everyone, but if anyone can help me, i will love you forever.
    cheers

I'd like to know the same thing. I would like the numbers to come first, the way it was before the update. I have tried finding a way to set it, but haven't found anything.
As far as the iTunes folder you will have to manually move them

  • When I download itunes 10.4 and quicktime the icons appear on my desktop but once I double click on the icon nothing happens, When I download itunes 10.4 and quicktime the icons appear on my desktop but once I double click on the icon nothing happens

When I install itunes on my home pc everything goes thru fine I see the icons on my desk top but once I double click on the itunes icon nothing happens
I downloaded itunes 10.4 and I'm using window 7 - 64 bit as my OS.

    Many thanks.
The iTunes and QuickTime symptoms are consistent with another application (other than QuickTime itself) having dropped old Quicktime componentry in your system files.
So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • My customized genres get changed back to the iTunes default genre

I customize my genres, I find the genres provided by iTunes to be insufficiently accurate. Every time I buy new music from iTunes - or download previously purchased content - my genres are set back to the original iTunes genre.
When I play a track with a changed-back genre it once again reverts to the genre I assigned it. But I am now into thousands of tracks that have customized genres, so I've begun avoiding iTunes and buying from Amazon simply to avoid contact between my iTunes application and the iTunes store, so that it doesn't set back my customized genres.
Not sure that was clear:  Example:
I bought Lou Reed's "Hudson Wind Meditations" in the iTunes store, and I download it to my iTunes software so I can sync with my iPod and iPhone. The genre it is assigned by iTunes is "World." I consider this the default genre.
I don't consider it "World" music, and want to find it along with my other Lou Reed tracks when sorting by genre, so I change the genre to "Rock - Avantgarde - NY". I have a number of customized genres.
The next time I buy and/or download anything from the iTunes store, all my customized genres are reset to what to the default genres the tracks had upon purchase.  - This is highly frustrating, because I have given thousands of tracks customized genres. So after downloading something from the iTunes store, my Lou Reed "Hudson Wind Meditation" shows the genre as the default genre again, in this case it says "World" again.
Oddly enough, if I play a track that had a custom custom genre but that was changed back after contact with the iTunes store, it reverts back to the customized genre. So if I play the Lou Reed track again, it changes back to my customized genre as soon as I hit play (it would change back to "Rock - Avantgarde - NY".
It isn't a tenable solution to hit play on every track after every new download. Nor is going back in and re-customizing every album in a bulk move.
Can I lock genres? Help please.
iTunes 11.2.2 running on 10.9.4, but it's been doing this for several iterations.

Go to iTunes > Preferences > Store and turn off
Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases
Share details about your library with Apple
On any iOS device go to Settings > Music and turn off
    Show All Music
Close and reopen iTunes and/or reset the device and you should see your version of the metadata for each track rather than the original store data.
(Not sure if this also works if iTunes match is in use since I don't use it.)

  • ITunes on Mac and PC via NAS (sync'd metadata?)

    Hi all,
I have migrated my iTunes media folder from a Windows external USB hard drive to a LaCie NAS (attached via Airport Extreme Base Station).
I have copied my iTunes folder up to the NAS and am pointing both my Windows and Mac iTunes installations to the library db on the NAS.
I'm getting a couple of problems from this setup...When I try to open iTunes on one machine after closing it down on the other, it can take a long time (sometimes hours) for iTunes to finish checking/updating the library (whether moving from Mac to PC or vice versa). I do not have iTunes opened on both machines.
Also, it appears that the Mac version of iTunes handles the organisation of the library slightly differently from the Windows version, and I end up with hundreds of tracks showing up with !'s and telling me they can't be found when I try sync them to my iPod. They are there when I go to locate them, but when I do, this can lead to duplicates in one or the other iTunes instances.
I want to be able to do the following:
    1. Play iTunes from both Mac and PC using the same files on the NAS (not on their respective hard drives.)
    2. Maintain the same file metadata (ratings, labels, locations, playlists, etc) on both my Mac and my PC.
    3. Sync my iPod with iTunes on both machines
    4. Open iTunes on either machine (not concurrently) and not have to wait a half hour or an hour before I can use it.
Is there a headache-free way to do it? (I would even be willing to pay for an app that could help accomplish this.)
I have about 19,000 files, and ratings for 12,000 of them...I don't want to have to go back and do that again.

    Hi,
I never used it but you might want to consider "Supersync". Available at supersync.com
It looks like you could duplicate your iTunes Library DB and just sync automatically (every hour) your DB to make it work on both computers.

  • Change iTunes Movie Genre in iCloud

Simple problem.  I buy a movie on iTunes.  Once downloaded, I change the genre of the movie.  I then update iTunes Match.  However, on AppleTV under Movies > Purchased, the genres that show are not my iTunes genres and the movie has the store genre, not mine in iTunes.  If I go to Computers on AppleTV and connect directly to my iTunes library, the genre is the way I want it.
How do I change the genre of an iTunes purchased movie in iCloud/iTunes Match and have that genre show up in Movies > Purchased on AppleTV?

iTunes Match and iTunes in the Cloud are not the same service and using the "update iTunes Match" command will have no affect on the ID3 tags of videos in the cloud. In fact, at this time, it is not possible to change the tags of videos in the cloud. To use custom ID3 tags in your videos, download them to your computer and share them with the Apple TV via Home Sharing.

  • What's the difference between the music in the iTunes Media folder and music folder

I've noticed that the music in my iTunes folder has two copies -- one in the 'iTunes Media' directory and another copy in the 'iTUnes Music' directory.  Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the two, or what they're used for?  When I click on a music file in the Music folder, iTunes opens up and plays, but the same thing happens when I click on the file in the Media directory.  I have noticed that the file in the Media directory has the icon for the album cover next to the file name, while the icon for the file in the Music folder just has a couple of eight notes next to the file name.
It seems to me that it's a waste of space two have copies of the same file.  Or am I missing something?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you have allowed iTunes to Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization (iTunes 9) or used File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (iTunes 10). Depending on your choices for Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other.
In your case it seems you also have both media folders structures sitting side by side with music in each. It is probable that everything in iTunes Music has a duplicate in iTunes Media, but if you are not sure then you could add it all in, then remove duplicates. (Steps 6-12 below)
Assuming you're happy letting iTunes organize your files the following steps should tidy things up:
    1. First make sure under Edit > Preferences > Advanced that the current media folder is given as .../iTunes/iTunes Media. If not then in the following steps you need to swap the words iTunes Music for iTunes Media and vice-versa
    2. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Reorganize files in the folder "iTunes Media" and click OK. Ignore this step if the option is greyed out.
    3. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Consolidate files and click OK. This will bring any files currently organised outside the designated media folder into it.
    4. Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab, uncheck Keep iTunes Media folder organized and click OK.
    5. Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab, check Keep iTunes Media folder organized and click OK. This triggers iTunes into reorganizing everything.
    6. Select Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab, uncheck Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library and click OK.
    7. Use File > Add Folder to Library. Add iTunes Music. This may take some time.
    8. Hold down the option key and click File > Show Exact Duplicates.
    9. Sort the library on Date Added, select everything added today and delete it.
    10. Click Display All at the bottom of the screen to show all files again.
    11. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Consolidate files and click OK.
    12. You have now confirmed that everything inside iTunes Music must be a duplicate copy of something in the iTunes Media folder and made sure your library is connected to the copy in iTunes Media. Delete the iTunes Music folder...
