Organising iTunes U collection?

Hi. I just downloaded the MIT Introduction to Algorithms on iTunes U but when I look in my iTunes U section of iTunes the videos are showing up as a separate collection to the notes. I have given them both th exact same metadata in the hope that this would 'merge' them as a single collection but no luck. Any suggestions?

There would seem to be a lot of overlap between the behaviour of podcasts and iTunes U. Podcasts subscriptions may split after a change in the feed URL. I assume the same thing has happended with your iTunes U collection.
You may find it easier to just delete the collection and download again.
Here are some of my previous thoughts on the topic...
Editing properties such as Album title and Artist is not enough to merge things back together however it can be done with a bit of effort. Windows users can download and install Mp3Tag. Hopefully there is a Mac tag editor that has similar features. Mp3Tag can be used to explore the Extended Tags of other episodes from the same series. As far as I can tell the PODCASTURL field is used to link different podcasts from the same subscription (as opposed to fields like Album & Album Artist etc.) and PODCASTID determines the order. Everything else seems to be optional. Backup your files, tweak a few a tags then highlight the changed files in turn in iTunes with the image pane set to Selected item.
Again, if I recall correctly, the order is determined by the ID, but if you need/want to modify the Release Date then in MP3Tag/Extended Tags it corresponds to RELEASETIME in the format yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ssZ, e.g. 2008-02-20T09:10:52Z

From your Manage App Subscription page, choose an app subscription.
Tap the subscription category for which you want to disable auto-renewal.

Note: When you turn off auto-renewal, you will no longer continue to be billed for your subscription, however your subscription will continue until it expires.

  • It is possible to use a VOD HTTP Stream in an iTunes U Collection and/or Course?

We wish to better comply with TEACH Act guidelines by using VOD (video on demand as opposed to real-time streaming) HTTP Streaming where an instructor is asserting educational fair use of copyrighted material.  The key component in TEACH guidelines is that the student not be able to retain the materials beyond the duration of the course.  Thus, VOD HTTP Streaming will meet this specification nicely and is supported across all of iOS and MacOS X.
Thus, the question: It is possible to use a VOD HTTP Stream in an iTunes U Collection and/or Course?

I knew about that, but my question is, if it is possible to use an europe power adapter.
Because i dont want to a carry around an power adapter and a plugin adapter.
I hope you understand what i mean.
    Sorry for my english
    Best.

  • Downloaded iOS Dev videos but some are not shown as downloaded in iTunes U collection

This is a 2 day old Mac Mini so maybe something is not set correctly.
I chose to download the iTunes U collection of iOS Development videos.
12 videos downloaded OK and I have been watching, the others downloaded but are not shown as downloaded (the 'Get' is still shown).
An example is the Effective iPhone App Development - Part 1
I have downloaded this now 3 times and logged out and back in, closed all applications and opened them again with no effect.
There was a comment in one Apple forum that suggested video restrictions may be preventing some downloaded videos from being displayed.
As far as I can see there are no restrictions set.
Must admit to being a bit stuck on this one.

I had the same problem. This seems like a bug.
I discovered a workaround for this problem:
Open your "iTunes Media" folder (usually at /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media).
Inside "iTunes Media" should be a folder called "Downloads". Open it.
Now switch over to your iTunes application and start downloading the video.
Now switch back to the iTunes Media "Downloads" folder. A folder named "iTunes U" should appear. Open it. Now open the next folder which should be called "Effective iPhone App Development - Part 1 _ iOS Development Videos.tmp". Inside this temp folder you should see a file called "download.m4v" which we will deal with later.
IMPORTANT. While the video is still downloading, drag and drop any file (like a random text file) from a different location into that temp folder. If you don't drag and drop a file into the temp folder, iTunes will automatically delete the "download.m4v" video file right after it finishes downloading.
After the iTunes application is finished downloading, you can drag the "download.m4v" file out of the temp folder and onto the desktop or a different folder of your choosing. This file can now be viewed with Quicktime or any other video player.
    Hope this helps!

  • ITunes U Collection artwork not displaying?

I was recently troubleshooting an issue where some of our iTunes U Collection's artwork were not displaying correctly,  represented by the generic iTunes U thumbnail. I then discovered the GIF image format is no longer supported http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/DZR.woa/wa/viewSeeAll?frId=13264121237549&id= 421324250&id=421324250 so I replaced the GIF formatted artwork with PNG formatted artwork for 68 Collections and Episodes, updated the feeds, waited a week to discover all have been resolved except two Collections still displaying the generic iTunes U artwork http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/DZR.woa/wa/viewSeeAll?frId=13264121237549&id= 421324250&id=421324250.
The two Collections in question are:
    • Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences - http://itunes.apple.com/au/itunes-u/faculty-engineering-industrial/id421324755 feed from RSS http://www.commons.swinburne.edu.au/feeds/podcast_ID34.xml
    • Faculty of Design - http://itunes.apple.com/au/itunes-u/faculty-of-design/id421324727 feed from RSS http://www.commons.swinburne.edu.au/feeds/podcast_ID37.xml
I can see from the iTunes U Public Site Manager the questionable Collections are using the updated PNG file now. I can also see this issue and the like has been raised in the iTunes U - Apple Support Communities
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/13386384#13386384
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12457068#12457068
but I see no solutions or recent comments.
I have now found some Episodes associated to the above two Collections with JPG formatted artwork not displaying correctly via iTunes U on iOS?
Anyone got any suggestions to resolve these issues?

Thank you for your answer. But you know what; I think that the artwork is embeded with every iTunes collection, otherwise it wouldn't be shown at the iTunes store.
I think the problem is with how iTunes handles downloaded collections. Apple has to do some work on iTunes, now that they are promoting iTunes U.

  • Can't open iTunes. When I attempt, the following message appears: You are attempting to add a new iTunes U collection but iTunes U is disabled. Would you like to enable iTunes U?

I Can't open iTunes. When I attempt, the following message appears: You are attempting to add a new iTunes U collection but iTunes U is disabled. Would you like to enable iTunes U?  If I click either yes or no, the same box just reopens.  As far as I know, I have not done anything with iTunes U.  The software is up to date and I have also reinstalled itunes.  Any ideas?

Since this problem, I was able to reinstall again and reboot, and then 'stop' while the library was being opened (that was another window that I could not close, that would come up before the error message, this time I chose to stop it).  Now only music I have purchased appears, none of my other >1,000 albums I manually added via my CD collection.  About 10% are in different music folders (I don't know why they aren't in the same one), but the other 90% are missing.  Any ideas??

    Greetings;
This seems to an ongoing issue (see related discussion link).  We've been experiencing the same update lag since last Friday.  The new additions to the Collection appear and are accessible in both the iPad and iPhone applications, but even though they additions appear in "Quick View", the material doesn't appear in the Collection itself.  Apple is aware of the issue and is investigating.  All the best...

  • Organising itunes by genres and styles

    Hi
My iTunes library became through the years a very large database with music.
I have now more than 3000 albums in my collection
And a lot of different genres and styles.
Till now I didn't care about the genre and style.
I had a complete different way of organising them.
I'm starting the realise that I should reorganise everything.
It's gonna be a huge work, I think
Something that looks pretty poor in iTunes, is the classification by genre and style.
Doesn't seem very obvious to me in iTunes.
Cause of the many genres that overlap each other, it looks difficult to organise.
I have many albums that are a mixture of Jazz, funk, afrobeat, afrofunk, world, ...
Also a lot of them, go to electronic, dub, reggae, ...
    I had a closer look to discogs.com
Their way of classification looks pretty good to me.
I checked a lot of albums on their site, and it looked close to what I wanted.
But how giving multiple genres and subgenres (styles) to 1 album.
Except giving them in the same tag the different genres and subgenres
But then I will have a lot that starts with jazz
And the result will be a huge list with different genres like
    - jazz / funk
    - jazz / soul
    - jazz / afrobeat
    - jazz / afrofunk
    - jazz / afrobeat / electro
    - jazz / afrobeat / dub
Also it must be very well ordered, and not having
    - jazz / afrobeat / funk
    - jazz / funk / afrobeat
it's the same genres, but will be shown as different genres in iTunes
    Anybody any idea.
Is there also any automatisation possible in this huge upcoming work

There is only one official genre field.  However, just because a field is called something doesn't mean you have to put that information into that field.  For example I don't use Beats Per Minute but I do have a 3 digit code I use for some tracks that I put into that field and just remember that's what I use BPM for.  I put album label information into the Grouping field. You could put a second genre into that if you so wished.  You still won't be able to list by genre and sub genre though.  You're limited to what is offered.  You can make suggestions to Apple to change iTunes to add more genre fields but this may go again some sort of tagging standard, and frankly I don't see a lot of people here complaining about it so I don't think it will be put high on their list.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
Oh, I guess if you're a genius at Applescripting you could write a script ot parse the genres and subgenres out of the genre field and create a manually ordered playlist based upon that.

  • Can't download my iTunes Match collection of music anymore! PLEASE HELP! (Pics to prove!)

    Hi!
There is probably a pretty easy fix for this situation - it's just I can't figure out what it is. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Here's my situation;
    1. I have a pretty large collection of music which I paid to match a couple years ago. My computer which I originally used to subscribe to iTunes match has died. No problem right? Since I have already subscribed to iTunes Match. But wait...
    2. I wanted to download my entire music collection onto another one of my computers just because I want to keep a back-up of all my music - just incase some time in the future I do NOT want to subscribe to iTunes Match anymore.
    3. While I was able to download most of my collection - a ton of songs were not downloaded. But instead, I see as pictured in [1] below, an exclaimation point in a circle to the left of the song, and a cloud icon with an exclaimation point in it under the "Match" column.
    4. I am still able to play these songs - and download them individually, but not without going through a 4 step process FOR EACH SONG!!!
THERE MUST BE ANOTHER WAY to download all my music without going through this ridiculous process.
[1] STEP ONE - Select the song I want to download. If I double click it - I first see this message below that says, "The song "the beatles - Beetles-Hey Jude" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" So, since I no longer have the original file, I click "Cancel". BUT, that's exactly the moment when THE SONG STARTS PLAYING - and the the cloud icon with the exclaimation point turns to a could icon with an down-arrow letting me know that I can now download the file. (Go to step 2)
[2]  BUT when I click that cloud icon with the down arrow, the cloud icon with the down arrow changes back to the cloud icon with the exclaimation point and then I get this message that says "The item was not added to iCloud because an error occurred." But the song seems to have downloaded in the right folder in my iTunes music folder. So, I hit OK, and I and I am still able to play this song. (Go to step 3)
[3] So at this stage, I am not sure why there is the CLoud icon with the Exclaimation point in it next to the song. Because it was just downloaded from the cloud, into my iTunes folder. But never the less the cloud icon with the exclaimation point is still there. The only way I can now get rid of that is to right click and select - "Add to iCloud".
[4] So now you see here below, STEP 4 - Hey Jude is downloaded, and matched to the cloud. THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY! Please help.

I have the same problem!!!!PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-I'm having some serious problems with installing iTunes on my laptop. I have searched and searched the internet and can not find any solution to my problem. I am receiving the error "itunes is not a valid win32 application' after the program finishes downloading. Sometimes however it will just stop in the middle of the download. I use a SONY VAIO VGN-NW25GF which was only purchased last year. It uses windows 7. I had trouble downloading itunes to begin with though eventually it worked, however since the new 10.1 update has been available ive been attempting to update it almost every time i use itunes. Each and every time it fails and i've had enough as i need to update my iphone software. I’ve since uninstalled both itunes and quicktime hoping it will reinstall properly. But nothing, the same problem is occurring and now i have no itunes program!
I've tried all the solutions online about deleting browing history/temp folder and any itunessetup.exe/quicktimesetup.exe files and nothing works. I've also tried downloading using a different browser and still nothing. I’ve done a virus scan, disk cleanup and disk defragment and NOTHIGN is working. I'm starting to get quite frustrated as i need this program for my iphone. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks 

  • Is it possible to organise iTunes without using iTunes?

This may seem like a silly question, but bear with me...
I have some spare time at work and with me I have the hard drive that contains my iTunes media. At home is my computer with iTunes installed. I have a lot of double up songs and mislabelled files, etc., that I'd really love to get organised... but I never have time to do it at home. I have the time to do it at work, but I don't know if I mess around with deleting and renaming files directly, whether the changes will be transferrable to my iTunes. I have playlists, etc. that sync with my iPhone and I'd rather not risk wiping those... but I can only assume that making changes within the iTunes media will require me to re-import the entire lot? Is that right? And then I might lose all those playlists, etc.?
I'm sorry if I haven't made this particularly clear... but if someone out there understands what I'm trying to do, Id love some help...
    Thanks,
    Jess

You could re-link but most people absolutely detest the idea of re-linking more than a file or two.  If you rename files iTunes may not automatically recognize them so you may end up having to re-link hundreds of links one by one.  It would take a day and quickly get very tedious.  There wouldn't be any automated way of doing it. If you delete duplicates in Finder you will also end up with broken liinks but there are ways ot automatically delete broken links.  Of course unless you are very, very careful you may end up deleting somethign that wasn't a duplicates and when you blindly go in and delete dead links one or two may be things you didn't want to delete.
In the normal course of things you should end up generating many duplicates,  You may wish to review how you use iTunes so as to avoid this in future.

  • Missing tracks in iTunes U collection

For the University of Chicago "Volunteer Caucus" collection, 52 items are added on the iTunes site manager (last uploads were January 3), but only 17 appear on iTunes U. The release dates also appear to be wrong (e.g. "Reunions with Class" shows up as 11/19/10 when it should be 10/09/10).
We had an initial problem in another collection which was caused by bad/missing characters in the feeds metadata, but it doesn't seem as though there are any such characters for this collection.

We checked the collection and an invalid XML character was found in the RSS feed. Since this is an Apple hosted feed, we will need to go in and remove the invalid character. Stay tuned.
    -Thanks

  • ITunes movie collection and data fill for the "Get Info" section...

I am an avid iTunes (iTunes 8.2.1(6) for Mac) user. My iTunes Library is stored on an OWC Guardian Maximus Raid (1tb-1tb) connected via USB2.0 to my Intel iMac (2.26 C2D/ 2GB RAM/ 350GB HD/ 256K ATI Radion X1600). I have 3 Apple TV's that we use constantly to watch our movie collection in different locations throughout the house (Kids Playroom, Living Room, & Master Bedroom) using our 3rd Generation AirPort Extreme (Dual-Band).
Does anyone know of a service or program that can data fill all of the information in the "Get Info" sections especially for the movies? I have the titles and dvd cover photo on all of them just not any of the other information. The only ones that have any other information are the ones I purchased from the iTunes store. Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

  • ITunes U - Collections for a single Collection are separated?

Downloaded the transcripts via 'Get Tracks' button for an MIT OpenCourseware course. In my iTunes U library, the first collection lists all the transcripts. Below that is a separate collection each with 1 transcript inside. How do I consolidate these?
I tried deleting the below collections and it removed them from the top collection. I tried removing and re-downloading, same issue. Tried using 'Get Info' with all selected and checked-off all boxes that had text.

I don't have any answers. I deleted all the itunes U stuff off my PC, because I couldn't stand how it put things in random places and there seems to be no way to organize it. Spanish courses were going into my video and music sections and not staying put in the itunes U section. I think it's becuase each provider does their own design and tag things differently:

  • ITunes music collection after 6th hardware update gone?

    Dear Community,
I hope someone can help me with this question:
Every year or two I upgrade my hardware, 4th time now – each time iTunes is counting down -
How can I prevent losing my music collection when I upgrade the 6th time?
Do I get an option "Buy all again" and it costs me a fortune? Is the iCloud the solution.
Here's thanking you in advance for helpful advice. Cheers

If you've got 5 computers authorised for the account in question, and you need to free up authorizations, I'd do a "Deauthorize All" from one of the computers you have access to, and then reauthorize the computers you have access to.
For instructions, see the following document:
iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization
