Organising photos within a collection

In LR5 when selecting photos in a collection I use Survey view (by Typing N) then I can remove photos I have selected in the catalogue by clicking the "x" on the bottom of each image. However upon returning to grid view (by tying N) the images I thought I had removed are still there.
Any suggestions?!

Dunno - I 'spose that's possible, or perhaps you misunderstood him .
I mean, if you have library filter set to hide those marked with 'x' (or smart collection which excludes), then marking them with 'x' will "remove" them from collection.

In Lightroom mobile how can move photos within the collection????

What you can do is to move (or copy) a photo form one collection to another. This can be triggered via the top right app menu item from grid view. Same menu is available when you open up an image for editing. Hope that helps. -Guido

  • How do I rearrange photos within a collection?

I have created a collection for a portfolio review in my desktop version of Lightroom 5.  I have enabled sync with Lightroom Mobile, and all of the photos have synced to my iPad.  The photos are in the order that I imported them from my hard drive originally, and they synced in that same order to my iPad.  I want to rearrange the photos, however.  How can I do that?

Normally you can drag photos around in a collection and they remain fixed in your chosen order. Not sure how LR mobile syncs, but why not give it a try with an existing collection or new collection.

  • Organise photos within Album in iPhoto on iPad

Yesterday I purchased the iPhoto app for my iPad, this is due to someone recommending it to me as an easy option of presenting artwork as a portfolio. I have a batch of JPEGs in an album that I want to display in a certain order, so I named them for example 'iPad app_p01' 'iPad app_p02' and so on. But when I synced the album into iPhoto on the iPad the photos are in a random order and the only option I have is to view them by newest or oldest, no option for by name.
Please can someone help me, this seems like a really obvious option to include in a photo app.
Any help would be much appreciated.

The iPad only sorts by date, and the date is the "date modified", so if you change the version name, you are modifying the date.
I have not tried it myself, but this post looks promising:   Re: How do I sort events in iPhoto for iOS?

  • Stack/Delete within a Collection?

Using Lightroom 1.2 on WinXP. When importing I leave photos in place and import only the metadata.
    1) Is it possible to stack within a collection? I see the expand/collapse stack drop list items when right-clicking within a folder but not within a collection.
    2) Within a collection, can you delete a photo from Lightroom or from the disk? I don't see a list item to do that when I right-click on a photo/photos within a collection. Right now deleting photos can get to be a hassle for the fraction of my collections which are not organized the same as my folders.
    Thanks,
    Robert

    1) No.
    2) It's something like control-shift-alt-backspace

  • Manual organisation of photos within library / film rolls

I'm new to the world of apple (3 weeks). One aspect I'm enjoying is getting old negatives put on CD and then importing to iPhoto to store / email / use as desktop. But I can't organise the photos within each roll to re-arrange them in the order they were taken. When I go to "View - Sort by", the "manually" option is not highlighted and hence unusable. I just want to be able to drag and drop photos within the library / roll so they are in logical groups and in chronological order within those groups. There seems to be no guidance under "Help". Am I being stupid?
    Any advice welcome.

    Hi caliban,
I know exactly what you are talking about! No, you are not stupid.
First, the manual is only for Albums you create.
    Rolls cannot be organized manually.
So the first thing you need to do is make your Albums.
To make a roll and album, highlight the title of the roll and go to File>new album from selection.
The album will now be in your source column.
Now that we have the albums, there is still a problem though.
If in your preferences you have "place most recent photos at the top" (which I do) you will have the last taken image in the album first . That is not what I want. (or you)
I want to view the photos in the rolls, albums in chronological order. But, I want the most recent rolls on top. Since we cannot change the rolls, that leaves us the option to change the album photo order.
You can set the album view to manual and drag the images where you want (pain in the ...)
I just saw this hint today, so go check it out.
Sort iPhoto album images by forward date
This is some info, including an applescript, to sort album images in an album in correct chronological order

  • How do I add photos from another collection to my saved Book?

    Hi,
In my lightroom library I have created a collection set called "Wedding". As I have 1000 photos from my wedding, within this Collection Set I have created 10 or more Collections to organise these photos (Ceremony, Reception, First Dance, etc.).
I have created a new 'Book' which as expected, has created a new Collection within my 'Wedding' collection set.
When I first create the book (before saving it) it seems like I can click on a page, then browse my Collections and add the photo that I desire to the page.
After I have saved the book, I can't so this. I want to work on my book later, and use my existing organisation of photos, and add photos to my books from these collections.
I know I am missing something basic (I am new to lightroom). I don't understand why I can't add a photo to my book after I have saved it.
Each time I click on one of my other collections, a new unsaved book appears in the main project window.
I have worked out that if I copy all my wedding photos into the new "Book" collection, then my photos are available for use - but this defeats the purpose of organising my photos into separate collections, and it doesn't seem like you can create a sub-collection within the Book project.
I also can't seem to find any documentation to explain this properly.
Any help would be apreciated - or if I coud be pointed to a good resource.
    Cheers,
    Mandy.

    Thanks for the response.
I saw these discussions previously, but not of them seem to answer my question (nor confirm that what I am trying to do cannot be done).
If I want to create a "Wedding Album" book, do I have to firstly use the Library module to drag ALL the photos I may want to use into my "Wedding Album" collection (saved book) ?
This seems annoying as I have already categorisied my 1000+ wedding photos into separate Collections using the Library (so that I can find the one I want easier).
It seems as though the Book module would function much better if you could create a book, choose a page that you want to add a photo to, then browse through your pre-configured collection sets & collections, and add photos to the book from the navigation panel on the left when you have the "Book" module open. (Rather than having to copy the photo first into the "Book" 's Collection, then adding it to the page that you want)

  • Web Gallery help separating photos into 2 collections

Help creating web gallery please. I would like to separate photos in the gallery into 2 different collections or categories. When I set up my web gallery in LR 2.0 and choose the first set of photos, I can name this collection title on the right panel. How can I then set up a second collection with different photos so they both show up in the gallery on the web and a viewer can choose either topic and then view the photos within it? Thanks.
    Matthew Kraus

You need to create a master gallery page and link to the pages within. There is no automatic way to do this.
There are 3rd party options: LRB Portfolio (disclaimer: mine), Auto Index from The Turning Gate will do this with Galleries from the Turning Gate.

How can I sort photos within an event? When I follow the Help instructions, I can sort manually in Photo format, but when I return to Event format, the original order is restored.

Events are organisation for those who can't really be bothered. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.
You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.
If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool.

  • Best Structure for Organising Photos - iPhoto wouldn't do it, can Aperture?

    Hi,
I was wondering if Aperture would let me organise photos in this way:
I have 'groupings' of files of pictures. For example 20 or so files containing university pictures inside a folder called 'university'. I then have 10 or so files containing pictures of the family inside a folder called 'family'.
What I would like to do is view the top folder (university or family) with a thumbnail, then go into it and view the subsequent folders as thumbnails, and then go into one of those and view all of the pictures as usual.
The problem is, if the 2nd level folders are all projects, I can't view them inside their respective 'top level' folder. Aperture (as iPhoto) appears to only let me view all 'projects' or all 'pictures'.
I tried having albums inside projects in the hope that clicking on the project would show thumbnails for each album but still with no luck.
I've had a look at the Aperture guide but this has proven unfruitful also.
Can anyone tell me if Aperture can do this and maybe if so, how it would do this because I'm at a loss?
    Many thanks!!

Short answer is no. Neithr application is a folder-based "nesting" system.
    They are databases.
Aperture is superior to iPhoto because you can have folders and within those you can have projects, and within those (or alongside in the folder as well) you can have albums, so it will work for you that far. It sounds like you've taken it that far at least.
The option to view as thumbnails is not available because of the skimming feature. All projects are displayed in such a way that all photos are visible, but the "top" photo is the representative key photo. That's similar to what you want to do, at least from a user interface POV, but it's a default behaviour, so the manner in which you want it to work is not how it can ever work. You cannot "nest" using key photos representing sub-folders.
Databases require you to organize your content along more rigid forms than file/older structures. Databases can handle a far larger volume of data and organize it with speed and efficiency as a result. You'll either have to change your system or use a non-Apple product.

  • Sorting photos within an event

I'm trying to find a way to rearrange my photos within an event. According to the instructions in help:
Sort photos within Events (but not the Events themselves): Select Photos in the Source list, choose View > Event Titles, and then choose View > Sort Photos.
Trouble is, when I try to choose Event titles, it is grayed out. If I go to the event and then select view>sort photos, manually is grayed out and by date and desending are checked.
    Anyone have a suggestion.

    Did you read the answer?
Events are a very limited form of organising. They are sorted on date and time only. If you want more flexibility then you need to use Albums, where there a virtually no limitations.
That is the answer! You can not sort photos within events.

  • Moving photos within events

How do I MOVE photos within events?

    You can't.
Events are automatic organisation based strictly on date and time. Manual sorting is not available. Put another way, Events are a very basic organisation for those who don't want to think about it.
Use Albums instead. They are much more flexible and include Manual Sorting. You can create an Album of an event simply by dragging the Event to the Album heading in the iPhoto Window. Albums simply reference photos in the Library and so involve no duplication - they take up no extra disk space.

  • List of photos and their collections

Is there a way to print or view a list of all imported photos and the collections that they belong to? Right clicking on each image to view this type of info is pretty cumbersome.

Well, the basic need for this feature is because I bracket my shots a lot. When I do an import, I import all and then delete the obvious that I don't want to keep. The remaining shots (usually shot within fractions of seconds of another) are borderline. I keep those. Sometimes I end up with two very similar shots in multiple collections, but they were shot milli-seconds apart.
If I make an update to a specific shot that is milli-seconds or so different than another, then the one that is a millisecond away is not updated. I would like to be able to update the same shot at the same time. My request is based on a desire to identify the one that is a milli-seconds different, delete it and then add the primary one to the collection so that all can be updated at the same time. Does that help?
In the Grid view, with "All Photographs" selected and photos sorted by capture time, these photos that are milli-seconds apart should be grouped together. You can make these changes to your photos in this grid view. Your changes to the collection status of photos has to be done one-by-one (or group by group). When you are looking in Grid view, you make the necessary changes to this group of photos that are milliseconds apart by updating the photos, moving the proper photos to their collections, and then deleting the ones you don't want. I simply don't see any benefit of obtaining a list, as this doesn't seem to give you any advantage over what I just described.

  • Organising photos on the iphone

How do you organise photos (inc those taken on iphone and those drag+dropped via 'automatically add' dir) within the iphone.
The only solution i can find is sync'ing - which is of no use as i have photos stored across multiple volumes and do not want to disrupt this organisation.
I cant find any apps to do it. Am i missing the obvious, surely this function exists!?!

For the native Photo's app, there isn't one - there's no way to organize pics directly on the phone.
You'd need to put your pics into one of the file management apps (File Magnet, Files, Dropbox, etc.) and manage them within that app (they'd be transferred to the phone via Wi-Fi, not through an iTunes sync).
