Organising projects in aperture?

As a total beginner to aparture how does one move projects to folders. I have tried dragging but they pop back out!

Guessing ... you cannot drag the Projects shown in the Project View and place them on the Library tab of the Inspector.  Double-click the Project (or Projects) in the Project Viewer that you want to move.  This will open a Browser showing all the Images in the Project(s), and it will select the Project(s) in the Library tab of the Inspector.  It is now short work to drag-and-drop the selected Project(s) from the current location to a new location (in a Folder, as you wish).

  • I imported a COMPLETED book project into Aperture 3, only to discover that  the resolution of all the photos has been reduced to totally unacceptable levels

I imported a COMPLETED book project into Aperture 3, only to discover that  the resolution of all the photos has been reduced to totally unacceptable levels.  Any easy solution?
    Steps:
    1. I finished an Aperture 2 (Two) book project and tried to submit it to Apple for printing. At that point I learned (belatedly, obviously) that Apple no longer accepts books from Aperture 2. I don't know how I would have known to even ask if Aperture 2 had been sunsetted as far as book projects go.
    2. So I tried to download Aperture 3 ($79.99), only to be told that I couldn't download Aperture 3.5.1 because I was still running OSX 10.8.x. So I read current reviews for OSX 10.9.x, and ...
    3. Downloaded and installed the current operating system (about a 3-hours process for me).  OSX 10.9.2, here we are!
    4. Then I returned to the Apple Store, found, and purchased Aperture 3.  [For safety's sake, it would sure be nice to have a .dmg file I could copy and file away.  I lost a perfectly legal and good copy of Adobe's Photoshop Elements 3 years ago because I wasn't smart enough to make a safety copy, and when my iMac crashed (fried electronic components), I was left with a copy of the software that wouldn't run, and couldn't be verified as legit.]
    5. When Aperture 3 finished installing, I found and imported my COMPLETED Aperture 2 book project, which import seemed to proceed nominally -- the right number of pages, the right content on those pages, that sort of thing -- until I started looking more carefully at the pictures themselves.  All of them, about 300 of them, have been imported into an Aperture 3 book project in such a reduced resolution that they are fuzzy at the size the book will be printed.  Screen-capture of just one example (at 100% viewer setting):
I don't know what to do at this point to correct the problem, short of going through the entire book project, copy the custom captions (since those go away when you "delete" photo content), delete the photo, re-insert the photo, and paste back the custom caption.  Lather, rinse, repeat - ~300 times!  An estimated 2-3 hours of additional work.
Or does anyone in this community know either (1) that I did something wrong in the Aperture 2-to-Aperture 3 import (I don't recall being offered any options or choices in the process); or (2) that there is a wholesale one-step solution to my problem?
BTW, I tried to edit my "Product" info, but OSX 10.9.x is not in the pick list.  I am running OSX 10.9.2
    <Re-Titled By Host>

Frank, thanks for your note.  I wrote "COMPLETED" because I had gone to a lot of effort to get the content of the book precisely as I wanted it. I would fully expect to see my level of effort and care matched by functional competence in Aperture 3 to render the book the way I created it.  Too much to ask?
And yes, I upgraded the Aperture 2 Library first.  [Not ALL my tens of 000s of pix, because I use Lightroom selectively for photo editing. But Yes to the Aperture 2 Library.]  That step took a number of minutes, but seemed to work fine (no error messages of any kind).
Then I opened the existing book project in Aperture 3, which followed some "magic-box" process that took a minute or so.  As I said, when that step was done, by all appearances the book was ready to submit for printing - until I examined the photos a little more closely.  You did see the blurry example I included, didn't you? That is what each and every photo looks like.
Text-box content appears to have been rendered pertectly, for the record (including captions).
So, ... is this result something you have heard of before?  Do you know of a one-step solution?  Or am I looking at an extended picture-by-picture fix?

  • How to find the size (in Mb) of a project in Aperture 3?

I do not know a quick way to find the size of the originals e versions in a project in Aperture 3.  Would any one know how to do this?
    Tks
    Pedro

Take a look in the "More Like This" section in the right-hand column for discussions about this.
The answer is: you can't.  Aperture is not so simply structured that you can select a group of Images and "weigh" them.
If needed, your easiest solution is to export the Images as a new Library and include the Originals.  The size of that Library is more than but close to the size of the Originals and the Versions.

  • Is there any way to password protect a project in aperture 3?

I have certain projects that I don't want viewable by others that may use my computer.  Is there any way to password protect a certain project or album to restrict access?

No. You can hide images using the "reject" rating, and you can password protect a Library by putting it on a password-protected sparsebundle.
    A good answer
A search of this Discussion forum.
OS X has fast-user switching and a built-in Guest account.  I never allow anyone access to my account.
To limit a client's view to just his/her Projects, use Aperture's "Favorites" function.  A forum regular -- Shutters33d, iirc -- posted this excellent suggestion just a couple of days ago.

  • Move iPhoto photos into specific project in Aperture

I am working on a project in Aperture.  I want to move a select group of photos from iPhoto into Aperture 3.5.1.  I know how to open these images in Aperture by switching libraries but I can't figure out how to actually move these photos into the Aperture project.  Most posts I found are based on Aperture 3.3 which is slightly different.
    Thanks.

I want to move a select group of photos from iPhoto into Aperture 3.5.1
    What is your iPhoto version?
To be able to import parts of an iPhoto library into an Aperture 3.5.1 library, you need a compatible iPhoto version, iPhoto 9.5.1, and your iPhoto library needs to be upgraded  to this version.
Open your iPhoto Library in Aperture and select the albums and events you want to export to Aperture.
Then use the command "File > export > Items as library".
This will write a new, partial Aperture library to your disk, with all selected events and albums, keywords, captions, edits,...
Now open your main Aperture library and use the command "File > Import > Library.
This will import the exported events and albums to your Aperture library. If there are duplicates, you may be prompted, if you want to merge or add the new items. Merging will only keep one of the duplicates.

  • How to auto split existing projects in Aperture 3?

Hi, I would like to batch split my existing projects in aperture 3 (latest version) so they're all split with one date of pictures in them, and I would also really like to name all of them by the date that the pictures were taken. Like for example, I have an album that's named "Album 1" and it has dates from July 24th-August 17, and I would like to have an individual album or project for every date, and also for the new split albums to be named by the date of the photos inside of it. How do I do this? Thank you!

    Hi,
Sorry, I can't help you there - I suspect it may be an Applescript job, but don't know Applescript myself.
Thinking about it some more, you could do it sort-of manually by first creating a new Project then searching all Projects for images falling within a set date range. You then select all the images returned by that search and drag them to your new Project.  Rename the Project accordingly, and rinse, lather, repeat.
This approach will be viable only if you have a limited number of images across not too big a date range.  Trying this on a big collection will do your head in.
I understand what you want to do now, but still don't understand why.

  • Empty project in Aperture

I am using a unified iPhoto/Aperture library which was originally created in iPhoto.    Most things worked fine in Aperture except for the following:
    1)  Photos from some "Events" in iPhoto ended up being separate "projects" in aperture.    I fixed this manually by merging them into a project.
    2)  When I merged some projects, the images ended up in a different "project" altogether.   So I then tried to move those images into the correct project by dragging them into it.   The operation seemed to succeed as the "project" now showed the images in the preview.
    3)  When I opened the "project" with the added images, the folder is empty, yet it still shows the preview of the images that should be contained inside.   I have checked all the filters, and that is not the issue here.   Even the count of images within the project shows as 0...  so why are there previews for the pictures when the project contains no pictures?   And more importantly, what happened to my pictures?!!   It seems like they are simply gone!
Is there a way to fix this or regenerate the library in Aperture?
Screenshot of "Project":   Notice the image previews on the project, but the picture count is 0.

While iPhoto will delete an event, when all photos have been removed, Aperture will not delete empty projects automatically.  So empty projects per se are nothing to wory about. Only sometimes project may appear with an item count of "0", if they are containing hidden photos.

Have you tried to open your Aperture library in iPhoto to look for your photos? (File menu > Open Library in iPhoto)
If an iPhoto event contains only hidden photos, it will show as a project with item count "0" in Aperture. Aperture cannot show hidden photos and it also canot unhide them. This can only be done by opening the library in iPhoto.
If it is not a case of hidden photos, back up your library, if you do not have a current backup, and use the Aperture library First Aid tools to repair or rebuild your Aperture library. Try "Repair" first -- see this manual page: "Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual"
After repairing look for a "recovered" project.

  • For 10 years I've been keeping my photos in iPhoto in "Albums". Now that I have Aperture 3.5 I began copying (in iPhoto) photos in my albums to "Projects" for Aperture. Is this correct?

For 10 years I've been keeping my photos in iPhoto in "Albums". Now that I have Aperture 3.5 installed, I began copying my photos in my albums to "Projects" for Aperture. Is this correct? If this is correct, I would expect that I can then delete my albums with photos in iPhoto since my photos are now in Aperture projects. Correct?

iPhoto and Aperture are having an inconsistent terminology:
For an introduction to Aperture's terminology see Kirby Krieger's great user tip:
                 The Well-Trod Path: a Beginner's Guide to how Aperture's major parts inter-relate
iPhoto's events correspond to "Projects" in Aperture.
Albums and smart albums are called the same in both applications.
iPhoto Projects (books, cards,.. ) are "Products" in Aperture.
I began copying my photos in my albums to "Projects" for Aperture. Is this correct? If this is correct, I would expect that I can then delete my albums with photos in iPhoto since my photos are now in Aperture projects. Correct?
Your events should show as projects in Aperture and your albums as abums. You should not need to do any moving around, but betetr do not delete any photo anywhere in aperture, until you are sure about the storage structure.
Like in iPhoto, there are library items that contain the images (events in iPhoto, projects in Aperture). Each photo is in exactly one project in Aperture. And there are library items, that can referenced the same photo in its project, without duplicating or storing it, albums ans smart albums.

  • Problems importing Aperture 2 archived projects into Aperture 3

Any suggestions please I want to import some archived projects from aperture 2 back into Aperture 3 from an external dive the projects are in folders named xxxx.approject. Aperture 3 sees the folders but the images are contained in separate folders within so for a project that has 600 images in it imports them all in individual folders which is a complete nightmare to sort out. Am I doing something wrong here or is this the way Aperture 2 exported projects? Any help would be appreciated.

It should work. Just try it.

  • Missing Projects in Aperture 2.1.4 after database rebuild?

Had issues when editing a recent import in Aperture 2.1.4. I looked for help and followed this: I repaired permissions on my HD, then rebooted. I still had the same behaviors when working on the images so I tried the Aperture "Consistancy check". It said it was running a "Vacuum of Database" and then reopened Aperture. I decided to "rebuild the database" and finished my editing on that Project. Before I did the rebuild I did a Time Machine back up to an external HD. After I did the rebuild I did a Vault update. (My Library is Managed.) Later when searching for some photos that I had imported last year from my iPhone, I discovered that several iphone projects were missing. I searched the Library with Keywords, dates, etc and the files do not show up. I looked in deleted files from my last Vault. The only iphone files were ones that I had deleted back in Sept 2012. I did a spotlight search on my harddrive but could not locate files by names.  I am talking about hundreds of photos in these projects. I know that I did some keywording and some have Instagram tag.  Also, when I open Aperture it says that 466 Projects have not been backed up to the Vault and 19 files. (There has been one Project with those 19 files imported since the last Vault update.) In Aperture it says that I have 465 Projects and 27,578 images. The size of the Library is 180.28GB. The last Vault update is 154.7 GB. I think that the missing projects were imported at times from Sept 2012 through Dec. 2012.
How do I see if they are in a previous Time Machine backup and restore only those missing projects to Aperture? Is there a way to check the contents of my lst Vault back up? (I also do not want to lose my two recent imported and editted projects.)
I did just look at the contents (Show Package Contents) of my Aperture Library in the Finder and I can see the Library Folder in the my organization where they reside in Aperture and the icons with the named missing projects. I know that I should not mess with the package, but does this indicate that they are still on my harddrive?  I also see some Albums that I remember making in the Dec 2012 Folder. They no longer show up in Aperture. It seems that somehow I ended up with an earlier version of my Aperture Library after my troubleshooting. I would love to get back to the earlier version of the Library and then add in the last two projects and edits that I added in Feb 2013. Those two projects, including the one that I was working on when all this began are still there, but I am at the very least missing many hundreds of photos of my family and travels that did reside in those Projects. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I need to upgrade to Aperture 3 asap, but need to solve this first.)

Anyone recovered from a similar issue?
Yes, I have inadvertently discovered I have the same problem with TIFFs I created by scanning in some very old photographs as TIFFs three years ago. I did extensive work on the old photos to restore their quality. Three years ago, everything seemed to work fine including printing the TIFFs. I just discovered Aperture 2.1.4 and Aperture 3 can't find the managed masters even though I verified they are in the libraries!
Like you I don't need to salvage the masters since I can drag them out of the library; I want to export the versions so I have my retouching work saved. At least I can see the final work in Aperture 2 but in Aperture 3, all is white or black previews with its managed masters not found.

  • How do I move projects from aperture to create space and keep images on external hard drive

How do I move projects from my iMac aperture 3 to an external hard disk so I keep all originals and create space on my iMac

Do you want to move your complete Aperture library to an external volume or only selected projects?
Get yourself an external drive that is formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) and connect it to a fast port, Thunderbolt, USB 3, for example.
As a precaution repair your Aperture library using the Aperture Library First Aid Tools (Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual) and make a current backup, before you proceed.
To move all projects to that drive simply drag your Aperture library to the external drive. Then click it in the Finder to launch Aperture on the new library and test it thoroughly, before you delete the old library.
To move selected projects to the new drive, select the projects in Aperture and use the command "FIle > Relocate originals" and select a folder on the external drive as the destination in the File Chooser. See: Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images

I merge projects in aperture, it works fine until aperture restarts.  After aperture restarts, the projects are no longer merged, and are back the way they were.  Can anyone suugest how to make the merge permanent?

I tried the first aid tasks but the issue is still there.  I have more info now though.  It's not a problem with merging.
The problem is that new projects are being generated everytime aperture starts (with the same name, ie 01, 02.... and 01 (1), 02 (1) .....)
When aperture start, it shows "importing".  When I click on importing, it goes into the activity box.  In the activity box, has many lines as below.  The added projcts are all empty.  It's annoying because i have many useless projects being generated.

  • Export projects in aperture to DVD

How do you create a DVD from Aperture projects and slide shows?

Create a slideshow project in Aperture.
Select the images you want to use in your slideshow, and use the command "File > New > Slideshow"
Pick a slideshow theme, add captions and music, and then use the "Export" button to render a video of your slideshow.
Then use third-party software to burn the video as a video DVD. Aperture does not provide burning video DVDs.
For software for burning DVDs see:

Why is it impossible to import pics into existing projects in Aperture 3.6 ? It forces me to create a new project on every import.
Tried to change that in preferences but no luck.

It is working for me.  Two ways to import into an existing project:
Select a project and view it in the browser in split view. If you drag image files from a folder directly into the filmstrip, the dragged image files will be added to that project.
Or select a project in the library, before you open the Import panel. Then you can switch the destination project in the Import Settings  from "new Project" to the selected project.
Have you tried these methods? Where does it not work for you?

  • Getting Selected Project in Aperture using AppleScript

Is it possible to get a reference to the currently selected project in Aperture using AppleScript? In other words, is it possible to get the project containing the currently selected image (which I can get by using "selection")? If possible, how can I do it?

    GIve this a try:
    tell application "Aperture"
    set x to selection
    set x to item 1 of x
    tell library 1
get value of other tag "MasterLocation" of x
    end tell
    end tell
One thing that helps to answer similar questions is to ask for properties of objects. That can reveal more about an object. Another way to help answer these kinds of questions is to ask for available tags in Exif, IPTC, and "other tags" of a particular image version. That will tell you all the available tags that have values assigned for a particular image version. You can then explore those tags to see if what you are looking for is available.
    Hope that helps.
