Organising/Saving downloads to folders

Hi there,
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it cumbersome organising and saving downloads to specific saved folders, particularly subfolders, in Mac? It seems I can't do it in less than 2 or 3 steps, as one has to save to the Downloads folder or a major folder first before being able to save to another subfolder. Even if I've created a folder specifically for an item, if I download something from the internet or receive something from email, I can't save directly into the new folder I created...it has to go into either the Downloads folder or one of the major folders rather than a subfolder. Is there anyway around this? It's pretty straightforward in Microsoft, not sure why it's not in Mac.
Thanks

If you're using Safari, then with many web sites you can control-click on the download link (right-click if you have a multibutton mouse, or whatever button you've defined for contextual menus) and select the "Download Linked File as" command and save the file wherever you wish. Other browsers will probably have a similar command though the text may differ slightly. If the web site has a special download script, then it will probably download only to the predefined Downloads folder, but this would also be the case in Windows.

None of my pictures that I uploaded into iPhoto are in my Finder under Pictures.  Should I copy and paste my folders from iPhoto into here, in case something happens to my iPhoto program (in addition to backing them up onto an external hard drive like I already do)?
No, that's just wasting space.  A back up needs to be on a different disk.
Your photos are within the iPhoto Library.

Ah, now i see that the folder has an icon on it - like a "settings" icon - sort of a wheel

  • I have transferred some photos from an sd card using an apple adaptor to my iPad then I did a sync in iTunes. How do I now organise the photos into folders?

I would really appreciate some help with this.

At the moment you can't move photos between albums directly on the iPad, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn (from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos) :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device.
Until then you need to organise the photos in folders on your computer and then sync those folders to the iPad - and you need to sync all the folders (and therefore albums) that you want on the iPad together in one go, as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad; not including photos in a sync is how you delete them from the iPad.

  • How to Make Sent and Deleted Messages Get Saved in the Folders of My Choice

On my iPhone, under Mailbox Behaviours, I can select specific mailboxes on the server where the Sent, Deleted and Draft messages will be saved. However, I could not find this feature in Mac OS 10.6.2's Mail application; instead, these mails are saved in default folders created by the program. How could I change this behaviour so that these e-mails are saved on the server, in the folders of my choice? Thanks.

you can do it in in Mail too if your account is IMAP. select a mailbox you want to use for Sent in the IMAP section of your account in the lower section of the sidebar. then go to mailbox menu->use this mailbox for->sent.

  • I can't find how to disable the "saved downloaded picture" notification.

I saved downloaded photos from Google and other sources. The little audio signature that accompanies the"save picture as" is driving me nuts. Is this a feature of Firefox and if so, how can I disable it?
Thanks very much. (Windows 7 sound scheme does not list this sound.)

Open about:config and search for the entry downbar.function.soundOnComplete . Change the value from 1 to 0 and then restart FF. That should take care of it for you.

  • Email settings, previously I could state how many emails to be saved/downloaded and under the ios 7 it no longer is there any ideas thank  you

Under settings mail, contacts, calendars my iphone use to have a place to state how many emails to be saved/downloaded I believe there was a choice of 250,500 or 1000, now that I downloaded IOS 7 I don;t see where you can do that. Is there any other way of doing it, thanks

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • HT4929 Even after I move to icloud, Lion download, etc., what happens to my saved email file folders? Do I leave them? Move them? Lose them?

I have downloaded Lion, etc, have a moblie me account that I have not moved to the cloud.
I have a lot of email folders with emails and links to websites, etc. that I don't want to lose.
After June 30th, will I still have these saved folders if I've moved to icloud prior to that date,
or do I need to move everything to a hard drive or a gmail account? Not sure what to do to
    save all of this.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
All your mail should migrate from Mobile Me to your iCloud Mail account. If you are at all worried, alt-drag the mail to a folder in your 'on my Mac' account to copy it, to serve as a back up.

  • Sculpture Synth: Saving Settings and Folders

Does anyone know how to save your settings into folders in Sculpture? I can't find the settings/presets anywhere in the Finder. I'm stumped....?

Your saved plugin settings will go to:
    /Users/YOU/Library/Application Support/Logic/Plug-in Settings/Sculpture/
You can create folders within that and organise however you want, and the folder structure will show up in Logic.

  • Can I organise Web Galleries into folders?

I keep my photos organised in folders. Can I do the same with the web galleries?
I have a long list of Web Galleries in the sidebar of iPhoto and it's tedios scrolling down a long way to find the one I want to edit. I tried creating a folder but it only appears in the photos section.

No, only the albums you used to create the web galleries (that is if you first put the photos in albums before creating the gallery).
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Hello-can someone give me some assistance in re-naming/organising my (downloaded) photos?

hello. I have a Powershot A470 that's a breeze to use. Canon did a wonderful job with this little gem- I love this camera and have no complaints about IT.
Using the some functions of the auxiliary software (Zoombrowser EX), however, is an entirely different story:
After downloading the (348!)  images from one of my memory cards onto my pc I went looking for a certain photo (Using  Zoombrowser EX) -well, ALL those pics showed up together (in apparently random order) in the "main window ". ..they're also  listed in the left-side  box   as "Recently downloaded"  where they ARE sorted by "shooting date-"for what good that does.   so I attempted to separate  and organise them. Nuts.  Couldn't figure out how so went to  Canon website for help, found -the relevant "Software Guide" -- a help it was NOT.
all I want to do is sort this mass of photos into a few different 'folders' (or whatever)  with a written caption/ shooting date  in addition to ( or instead of) the image numbers which were the sole identifiers. I figured out how to make the shooting date visible but that's all.  text  doesn't SEEM like it'd be hard to add but my attempt was an absolute FAIL
Can  anyone give me some simple instructions on separating some of my photos into different, new files with names and maybe  keywords? Or maybe point  me  in the right direction for guidance?
My gratitude in advance for any help you can give!!

    Imax,
In the left margin of ZoomBrowser EX, there is a [View and Classify] button.  If you click on this button, you can select a group of images, then click on [Rename Multiple Files] to change the naming scheme for each image to something that works better for you.  Once you do that, you can use the [Classify into Folder] option to move groups of images into a new folder structure.
If you like to search images by keyword, you can take that same group of images, click on the [Tools] dropdown menu, then click on [View/Modify Keywords] to add your own keywords to the images or use some of the keywords that are pre-loaded.

  • Mail.app keeps saving downloads to Mail Downloads rather than ~/Downloads

I've modified Mail.app preferences to save downloads in the main downloads folder, ~/Downloads. But every time I double click an attachment, it still downloads to the wrong folder, Mail Downloads, in a terribly nested directory, ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads.
I've tried restarting Mail.app, I've tried restarting Mac OS X, to no avail. This is starting to smell like a constant's set somewhere, instead of referring to the current application preference.

When you get an email with attachments, mail automatically unpacks attachments into those funky nested folders.  If you open the attachment directly that's what it opens, because it assumes that you just want to look at the attachment, not save it.  on the other hand, if you right-click and explicitly choose download it will download a copy into the downloads folder where you expect it.

  • Downloading to folders

Hello. I have a question regarding downloading images to folders. I am a big fan of artwork, and when I find a new artist, I usually save their entire gallery at one time. I am new to Macs, having used a PC all of my life, so forgive my ignorance about this problem. Anyhow, when I click to save the picture, the folder with that artist's name that I made isn't showing up as a choice of places to save the picture at, no matter where I put the folder. Any help?

Right clicking to save. See, I put all of my art in folders that have the artist's name on it. I originally had the folder on my desktop, right clicked and chose "Save Image as" and was able to pick where I wanted to save it at. The folder with that artist's name was not shown anywhere, so I moved the folder to the finder menu thing, where my home folder and pictures folder and whatnot are, still couldn't find it, so I kept moving it around and could not find the folder anywhere when I went to save the picture, no matter where I put it. I just don't want to go through these artist's galleries and save a picture, move it around to the folder I want, go back, download another one, and so on. I would like to just be able to download it straight to the folder I want it in.
