Organising text into columns using CSS?
Hello again guys,
Another day another problem.
This community has been really friendly and helpful so far with what I'm sure must appear to many of you to be really simply problems, so I'm hoping that you can bear with me and help me out again!
Basically, I'm designing my page using CSS, and I've come to a part where I would like to have 3 columns of text, of a fixed width, with a fixed gap in between. Using my very limited knowledge and experience, I inputted the code that I thought would work, but whenever I go to enter more text, it doesn't jump to a new line when it reaches the maximum width of the column, it carries on on the same line and pushes the rest of the text across.
How do I sort this out?
I can't actually upload my site until Monday, but I've included some screen below which I hope will help.
Thanks again guys.
Text in columns:

When I type some more, it doesn't stay in the column width:
http://i55.tinypic.com/dlno7b.png
The code that I thought would work:

Hi Murray,
Apologies. I had made a mistake. I've got it working now. Thank you.
Another tiny thing, if you check out this screen:
http://i54.tinypic.com/elcep.png
you can see that the line starts right near the top, and goes all the way down to the bottom.
Is there some way to amend the code that you gave me to adjust the height of the line? I tried adjusting the size of the image but that didn't seem to have an effect?
Ideally, I would like to line at the top of the 'T' of 'This is a news story', and finish at the bottom of the 'M' of 'More'. That height.
Something else which has confused me. I have that 'More' link aligned to the right, and in my design view in DW it is so aligned, but then when I preview the page, it jumps to the left hand side of each column. The alignment seems to disappear when the page is 'live'?
Thanks again for all of your help. You really are a star!

I really like using CSS to layout a page or add to an
existing page. I want to line up three equal size columns using CSS
instead of having a table. See this page for an example of the
first column. I tried to position the second column #test3 in css
but it stays underneath the first column. Any tips are greatly
appreciated.

I imported a tab delineated file into numbers and it put it into 1 column. The manual shows a menu bar Item "Divide text into columns" that doesn't appear on my tool bar. What now?
Mac,
Got it. Thanks for the explicit reference, that really helps.
I think the User Guide is a bit misleading there. The Guide is referring to the text in a Text Box and how you can format the box to display text in multiple columns, as in a newspaper page.
This feature doesn't parse your data into table columns, sorry. If you want to describe your data, we may be able to help with that.
It may be simple. Let's try the simple approach. If you Select and Copy the tab delimited data, then switch to a Numbers Table, click ONCE in a table cell and Command-V. Your data should spread across columns. If you click twice in a cell all your data will go into one column when you paste.

What happened to Format Bar: "Dividing text into columns"
This function is in the manual under "Working with Text" but it does not appear in the Format Bar. What am I missing?
E. Seagull,
The Format Bar is a Contextual Menu. As you know, that means that it only shows the controls that pertain to the current situation. If you aren't working in a Text Box or Shape that might need to be divided into columns, the columns control will be available, otherwise it will not.
I hope that you referring to the way text winds itself from column to column, like in a newspaper, and not the entirely different concept of parsing a long string into multiple table cells. Numbers doesn't include a feature for that type of parsing.

I made a text nav bar using CSS, and I am trying to get downdown menu's from it?
Hello,
I am working through a tutorial book and just created a text navbar with CSS, which I have never done before. Basically it was an Unordered list and then I used the float property right to make them go next to each other. Then created a few more styles to give them padding etc.
I thought I could go after each list item and now add a group of unordered lists items to pop up when I mouse over., but whatever I try in a new CSS style doesn't work to put them underneath.
Here is the code and the style sheet code thus far, and I have colored in blue, the items I wanted to have dropdown menu's come from. Can anyone help me or guide me to where I might find this info? I want to get to the next level, but this is as far as the book goes.
thanks!

In the previous version of Pages if your text exceeded the length of the column, there was a little icon to the right of the column where you could click to have the remaining text continue to another column on another page. How to style a GridPane Colomn or row using CSS ?
Hi,
I would like to style a Grid pane column using CSS. I found possible styling the entire GridPane using " -fx-border-color:yellow; -fx-border-insets:5; -fx-border-width:3;" for example. But is there a way of styling a single row or a single column?
For example, let's say I want a yellow border on my last column, does anyone has a clue ?
Thanks.
SebCSS doesn't do such things.

A few questions about using an XML file to add text into a TextArea component set as html
I'm using AS2 in Flash CS3.
I have a TextArea component in the stage that's loading its text from an XML and I've been able to use the ul and li tags to create lists. However, when I try to include a nested list it just inserts a line break between the nested list and the main list rather than indent it further. Is there a solution for this issue?
Failing that, how would I be able to add non-breaking spaces into the XML so they will render inside the TextArea component? I've tried and   without success. I scoured the net for some help with this and found some information about modifying the font embedding xml file with a new entry for the non-breaking space and that didn't work either, so that leaves me somewhat stumped.flash doesn't handle nested lists (as you now know). you can work-around that limitation using css and creating your own indent styles. css have a marginLeft property you can use.

Obviously, as seen above, I'm doing something wrong or Live View does not do all the functions that Design View use to do. I realize I can still access Design View in non-Fluid Grid Layout documents and that is my current work-around. I copy from my Word file into Design View available in non-Fluid, then copy that code into my Fluid Grid Layout document, not real efficient use of my time. And, even that work-around may not be available after the next upgrade.Hans thank you for your reply and attention to this matter. Moreover, with your steeped expertise I do not, in any fashion, intend to be flippant or capricious.
However, I do not believe the reply is on point since I'm not discussing the insertion of an HTML tag/element; but rather, the placing of complex formatted text into my various web pages.
Design View and 2014.1 Live View seem to serve different functions. That is, Design View, for us, serves as a highly sophisticated HTML5 code generator that allows us to properly display complex formatted text that originally is created as a Word docx file. As I noted in my original post, the complex formatted text from the Word file is then pasted into Design View and thus properly renders on the web page. I invite you to try this yourself. Simply copy my properly formatted text in my original post (that can be found at "Using Design View the web page rendered this way:") to a Word file, and it will retain the complex formatting, then copy that Word file text to both Design View and 2014.1 Live View files. Please apprise me of your results.
Discussion has been had in at least two separate threads on the Design View disappearance in Fluid Grid. In https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1597260 staff member Lalita wrote "It would be helpful for us if you list the issues you are seeing with fluid grid live view editing." And in https://forums.adobe.com/message/6807088#6807088 staff member Subhadeep wrote "If you can list down the workflows you are trying while editing in Live View & the issues you are facing in doing so, it will help us understand what is amiss & suggest alternative workflows to do the same." I believe I've pointed out issues when attempting to use Live View for functions or work flow that customarily had been done in Design View.
Being a CC subscriber, if someone can provide me with a workflow using other additional Adobe products to get my complex formatted text from Word ultimately to my Dreamweaver web page, be it an image insert or whatever, I would take the suggestions.
The difference in the coding of my example in my original post is as follows.

It is readily apparent that Design View is a much needed code generator in the Dreamweaver product. Live View serves completely other, and needed, purposes. Therefore, I still, after all the forum discussions, do not understand why Design View has been removed from Fluid Grid.
Again Hans thank you for your reply. But unless I'm missing something, citation to the links you provided does not solve my problem. And that problem is this: If Design View is on its way out and thus will be completely removed from Dreamweaver at some point, then how do I provide my information (i.e. complex executive job descriptions) on my website?
Apparently a vote is taking place https://forums.adobe.com/ideas/3922 on the issue of placing Design View back into Fluid Grid. I do not understand why the need for two rather disjunctive functionalities are at the mercy of the democratic process. These are matters of engineering principles not "town hall gatherings". -

ThanksIs this with the Travel database or another database?
If it's another database then make sure your columns
allow nulls. To check this in the Server Navigator, expand
your DataSource down to the column.
Select the column and view the Is Nullable property
in the Property Sheet
If still no luck, check out a tutorial, like Performing Inserts, ...

Import text into a form from a tab delimited file using an action
Good evening.
I am using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro
I have been working all weekend so far on this, and have tried many options.
What I am wanting is to import a line of data from an excel file into a form, save the file with a name drived from the form fields, close the new file, then go back to the original file, import a line of data, and so on and so on.
I had all of this working in livecyle with a tool, but now that we are going to Windows 8 and Microsoft Office 2013, the driver that I need to load the excel file into the form is not available--so now I have to redo the forms in Adobe and import using a tab delimited file.
I would like to do this with an action.
Thus far, I have the following.
**Credit goes to George Johnson who helped me with the script to save the file using field names a few months ago**
To start, I have a folder level script
mySaveAs = app.trustPropagatorFunction(function(doc,path)
app.beginPriv();
var myDoc = event.target;
myDoc.saveAs(path);
app.endPriv();
myTrustedSpecialTaskFunc = app.trustedFunction(function(doc,path)
//privileged and/or non-privileged code above
app.beginPriv();
mySaveAs(doc, path);
app.endPriv
//Privileged and/or non-privileged code below
For the Action, I start with the Form file loaded
Then I execute a javascript to import the text into the file.
this.importTextData("/c/data/clerical.txt");
The next step is to save the file using field names as part of the file name
--credit goes to George Johnson who assisted me with this on a similar project a few months ago.
//Get the Field Value
var fn=getField("Last").valueAsString + "-" + getField("First").valueAsString;
//Specify the folder
var fldr = "/c/data/";
//Determine the full path
var fp=fldr + fn + ".pdf";
//save the file
myTrustedSpecialTaskFunc(this, fp);
That is as far as I have gotten.
What I want to do now is load the original form file, import the next line into the form, save the file, repeat.
If anyone could assist me, I would greatly appreciate it.
**note I had to type this from my I-pad because I kept getting kicked off the internet from my computer. I hope my code is typed correctly.George
Thank you so much for your response.
Yes--there are multiple lines in the data file--it will vary from month to month. It looks like from what you are saying is that I need to do the global variable since it will constantly change, and then increment it as it goes through the text file. When it reaches the end, then it will stop.
I looked at the following links--but this is from Adobe 9 API--I don't know if things have changed with XI--especially since 9 used batch processing and XI has actions.

If you could point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. -
Setting Font for converting multiple text files into PDF using VB 6.0
Dear All,
Am converting multiple text files into PDF using VB6.0. Currently, am unable to control the font face and size for the generated files. Below is the procedure am using for each file;
Public Sub proc_convert_to_PDF(srcFilename As String, destFilename As String)
Dim p_AcroApp As CAcroApp
Dim p_VDoc As CAcroAVDoc
Dim p_DDoc As CAcroPDDoc
Dim IsOk As Boolean
Set p_AcroApp = CreateObject("AcroExch.App")
Set p_VDoc = CreateObject("AcroExch.AVDoc")
Call p_VDoc.Open(srcFilename, "")
Set p_VDoc = p_AcroApp.GetActiveDoc
If p_VDoc.IsValid Then
Set p_DDoc = p_VDoc.GetPDDoc
' Fill in pdf properties.
p_DDoc.SetInfo "Title", Format(Date, "dd-mm-yyy")
p_DDoc.SetInfo "Subject", srcFilename
If p_DDoc.Save(1 Or 4 Or 32, destFilename) <> True Then
MsgBox "Failed to save " & srcFilename
End If
p_DDoc.Close
End If
'Close the PDF
p_VDoc.Close True
p_AcroApp.Exit
'Clear Variables
Set p_DDoc = Nothing
Set p_VDoc = Nothing
Set p_AcroApp = Nothing
End Sub
What I need;
1) to be able to set the font face of the destination file ( destFilename)
2) to be able to set the font size of the destination file ( destFilename)
Am using Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Type Library
Kindly Help.
Thanks in advanceWe didn't say it doesn't work. We said it isn't supported.
There are a number of other ways to make a PDF. The one which would
give the most control is if your application directly printed to GDI,
controlling the font directly. This could print to Adobe PDF.
You could look for an application that gives control of font for
printing.
You could use a text-to-PostScript system and distill the result. You
could even look for a non-Adobe text-to-PDF.
Working in the unsupported and dangerous world you chose, the font
size for text conversion is set (and this is very bad design from
Adobe) in the settings for Create PDF > From Web Page. There is no API
to this.

We would like to purchase LiveCycle for the PDF Generator feature, but we want to know if it will meet our technical requirements.
We would like to convert a PDF, an HTML, a DOCX, and some custom text into 1 single PDF/A. Basically: joining 3 different files types and some text into 1 very long PDF/A file. Can we do this type of join?
Also, we would like to install LiveCycle on a central server and then call a web service or use an API where we can input the 3 different files and the text and as output we would get 1 PDF/A back. Obviously there might be intermediary steps, but in essence we need to be able to do this conversion from our custom code by calling some LiveCycle API.
Thanks!You can use Assembler service with PDFGenerator. There is support for Web Service endpoints(SOAP). Please go through this for details : http://help.adobe.com/en_US/livecycle/11.0/Overview/lc_overview_ds.pdf
Thanks,

Just started using my Mac Mail program instead of web mail. When I went to attach two pdf files, one attached as a file, the other inserted all the text into the body of the email message. How do I get it to attach both pdf's as files?
I think you're confusing two different things. If you attached PDF files and one of them displayed the PDF icon in the message window, that means it was more than one page. If you saw what appeared to be the actual document for the other PDF file, that means it's only one page and it's normal for it to display that way.
However, I seem to recall there may (or should) be a button at the bottom-right of the message window that allows you to display those files as icons, even if they're one page. If not, there's a third-party addition you can use to add that feature:
