Organization of movies imported from iPhoto

I am just a beginner with iMovie, and wanting to start working with movies taken of my kids. Several months ago I set up iMovie for the first time by importing all my movies from iPhoto. I'm really confused as to the organization of my clips in the clips pane. Some of my older movies are under headings that match the names of the corresponding iPhoto events in which they are found. However, the more recent ones are found under the dates they were imported or last edited. To me this is a huge hindrance to wanting to even begin to learn to use iMovie - that is, shouldn't my movies by default match the events in iPhoto from which they were imported? I don't really care to have them organized by the date they were imported into iPhoto from my camera.
I did some digging around and figured out that the headings in the clips pane match the folders in which they are found in the iPhoto package, but obviously am not going to touch that, for fear of damaging my iPhoto library.
The only solution I can find is to use the event library to manually create an event for each iphoto event. I just don't get why iMovie doesn't use the iPhoto event names automatically in the clips pane, and if that's something I can fix.

Now, when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iMovie, the video clip doesn't have any sound.
Your Sony stores its video content as multiplexed MPEG VX (MPEG-1) files which are "playback" only compatible with QT and QT applications. To retain the audio content you must use an MPEG-based, third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert these files before importing to iMovie for editing.

  • PSE 9 Organizer Unable to Import from iPhoto '11

When I try to import pictures from iPhoto '11 using the PSE 9 Organizer, I get the following message:
There is no media to import from iPhoto
I wonder if Adobe has not yet caught up with iPhoto '11 that came with recently introduced iLife '11. The iPhoto '09 catalog was converted in some way when I ran iPhoto '11 for the first time.
Anyone else having this problem or come up with a solution?

If you go to export in IPhoto 11, IPhoto 11 is not listed  in applications while IPhoto 9 is listed but there is no way to export photos using this or items associated with it.
Don't understand this, or did you mean in the options for External Editor rather than Export? If so, there should be Other at the bottom of the window. Navigate to the actual PSE 9 editor application, which is the first of the two files in the PSE 9 folder that has a blue square for an icon. You want the square without the version number in the file name, and without the little curved black alias arrow on it.
If you mean you want to put the photos into the Organizer, you select the photos you want to export, go to File> Export, then put the exported photos where you want and use File>Get Photos>From Files and Folders in the Organizer.

  • Movies imported from iPhoto do not have sound

When I connect my camera (Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W55) to iPhoto, it downloads both the pictures and video that the memory card has recorded on it from the camera.
Now, when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iMovie, the video clip doesn't have any sound. Thus far, I've tried importing in DV format and MPEG4 format. The video will play, with sound, in QuickTime Player from iPhoto, but in iMovie, it doesn't.
Also, when I click on the Help->iMovie HD Help, it starts to open help, but then closes itself. Bug, or do I need to re-download iMovie, or... purchase a higher level of iMovie? If I can't even get the Help function to work, what good is this piece of software?
BTW, I'm on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz processor, 1GB RAM installed running Mac OS 10.5.2.

  • Importing from iPhoto into Elements 11 Organizer

When I click Import in Elements 11 Organizer and choose the iPhoto option I do not get the "Import from iPhoto" dialog box that allows you choices of what you would like to import. Instead, the program immediately begins importing all the photos that I have in iPhoto.  How do I get the dialog box to come up so I can make choices of what I would like to import?

You are right, that is how it works.  However, I am looking at a figure on page 36 of the Adobe "Classroom in a Book" training workbook that shows an iPhoto dialog box where you can make choices.  Wonder where that figure came from.  After seeing it, I thought maybe I had missed making a preference setting somewhere along the line.  Thanks for your response.

  • Transfer movie metadata from iphoto to itunes?

    Short version:
Does anyone know a good way to transfer the iPhoto metadata associated with a movie in the iPhoto Library to iTunes? IE: I want to import a movie stored in my iphoto library to itunes so I can watch it on my apple tv. But I want the description, title, and keywords that I associated with that movie when I organized it in iphoto to come over to the itunes entry for that movie as well. Any way to do that?
    Long version:
So I have a bunch of movies that are organized in the iphoto library. These are movies that come in from my point-and-shoot camera, my iphone 4, and my digital SLR. I want to watch these movies on my apple TV (2nd Generation).
I know that I can option+drag these movies into itunes, and that will make them viewable on the ATV2. However, when I drag them over to itunes, none of the metadata that I added to the movies in iPhoto transfers. I'm talking about the "description", title, keyword information that I can add/edit in iPhoto. Apparently iTunes just grabs the actual filename from the movie file, but otherwise doesn't take in any metadata, and definitely doesn't take the info from the iPhoto library.
That means I have to fill in this information twice: once to organize the movies in my iPhoto Library (where the actual movie files are stored), and once to organize the movies in my iTunes library (where the movies are viewed from when using Home Sharing on ATV2. I find myself copy-pasting the description from the iPhoto interface into the description field in iTunes for each movie file, one by one. Got to be a way to automate this.
I understand that the metadata is stored in an iPhoto database somehow, and not actually written to the movie files themselves, but you would think that iTunes would be able to access the iPhoto database somehow. . .

But the description and title that you enter for a movie in iPhoto are clearly stored in some sort of iPhoto-only database, even if that metadata is not actually inserted into the movie file itself (.mov, .avi, whatever). Why can't iTunes access that database?
I would love for iTunes to be able to access iPhoto's database so that when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iTunes, the description and "title" are still applied. Instead, when I drag it over, iTunes just uses the movies file name as the title (often just some meaningless letter/number combination), and doesn't have anything in the description field. So I have to take the extra step of copy-pasting the description and title over from iphoto to itunes. Annoying.

  • Import from iphoto fails every time.

Import from iphoto fails every time.

It should not be a serious flaw, since this something that you only do ONCE. You don't want to use both organizer and iphoto. You'll have two sets of photos with no knowledge of each other. Import from iphoto is not meant to be a regular use item, only for the one time after you've decided organizer is what you prefer. It's fine to make a small test catalog while you decide whether iphoto or organizer suits you better, but to keep on using both is going to make you crazy in short order.

  • Failed import from iPhoto to Aperture - what's the best solution?

    Hello
After some years of using iPhoto I recently upgraded to Aperture 3.2.2.  In connection with that and before opening Aperture, I bought a new external hard drive and moved my iPhoto library to it, following Apple's instructions on how to move an iPhoto library to a different drive.
When I opened Aperture and was given the option to import my iPhoto library (of some 30,000 images), I chose, because I thought it was safer, to allow Aperture to access the images in my iPhoto library as referenced images rather than to store them in the Aperture library.
Unfortunately, the import was incomplete.  I decided to try to import again, in the same way, to see if that would result in my having all of the iPhoto images.  The re-import was also incomplete.  Worse than that, although I had told Aperture not to import duplicates, it imported for a second time many of the images that it imported the first time.  I now have in Aperture two separate large but incomplete iPhoto libraries.
After this, I learned that before using an external drive with Aperture I should have formatted it to Mac OS Extended, which I had not done.  Other research I have done suggests that a surprising number of people have significant problems in trying to move iPhoto libraries to Aperture, but I have not found a case that addresses my problem.
My idea now, subject to any advice anyone can give me, is to move the iPhoto library back to the Mac's hard drive (there is enough room, but little spare), delete everything on the external drive, format the external drive to Mac OS Extended, re-organise some of the iPhoto events, 'delete' the 'contents' of the Aperture library (without affecting of course the contents of the iPhoto library) and try again (possibly by importing the iPhotos this time on an event by event basis).
Is this a good idea?  If so, I would be grateful for any suggestions about how to take these steps.  In particular, the step of deleting the contents of the Aperture library without affecting the iPhoto library.  Are there other better ideas?  If so, what?
Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can offer.

If there is nothing in your Aperture library that you need to keep, that is a good strategy.
    But some suggestions:
Before you move your iPhoto Library from its current location (which will render the Aperture library useless, because it is referencing inside iPhoto), check if you accidentally have imported any images as managed into Aperture: create a smart album with the rule "File status is managed" at the top level of the library albums. This way you will see, if you have any images only in Aperture, that need exporting, before you delete the library.
Also right now the best option to import from iPhoto into Aperture is by importing complete libraries, not single iPhoto events or albums. If you import Libraries, Aperture can combine the iPhoto Originals and the edited versions into "Master-Version" pairs and save considerable space. This is only possible by importing the complete library, for more deatails see this recent thread:
Correct Answer Re: Aperture Loses iPhoto Edited Images
I advise against referencing the masters inside iPhoto, for it is risky. If you open iPhoto and accidentally edit or modify the referenced master in any way, then the reference will be broken. It would be safer by far to create a backup copy of your iPhoto Library and to import the image files into Aperture or to relocate the imported files as referenced masters somewhere else, after you imported them.
Post back, if you have more questions.

  • Importing from iPhoto fail

I am new to Photoshop and just installed Photoshop Elements 11 on my Mac OS X.  Everytime I try to import photos from iPhoto the import process will go through until it is almost finished, then a notification will pop up saying that the import failed. Once I click "OK" on that dialogue box a new box will pop up saying that a few (6) pictures were unable to be imported for various reasons, but that the rest of my pictures were imported.  I am then unable to find any pictures anywhere in Photoshop Elements.  I have tried to import photos 7 or 8 times with the same result everytime.  How can I fix this so that I can begin to use Photoshop?

Yes, you can use iphoto with PSE but you don't really want to use both organizer and iphoto. If you want to make a test catalog to try organizer, export some photos from iphoto, put them where you want to keep them and use File>Get Photos>from files and folders. Eventually you will want to choose one or the other, since having two separate management systems that don't know anything about each other will drive you crazy.
If you want to use iphoto with the PSE editor you have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor in the iphoto preferences and send the photos from iphoto. You need to select this file, since this is the actual PSE editor:
You want to save, not save as in PSE when you do this. If you see the Save As window it's not going to work, so you need to save your changes without changing the name or format of the image. Then iphoto will remember your latest saved edits + the original file, although you have to lose the edited version to get back to the original. You may need to go to the editor preferences>Saving files and set On First Save to save over existing to make this work.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use file>Open in the editor to open the photos for editing, make any changes you like and then re-import the edited photos back to iphoto as new files. The advantage of this is that you can save as many different states of your image as you like, and you always have access  to your original photo.

  • Importing from iphoto, always get "import failed".

I am trying to move my pictures from iphoto to elements.
I "import from files and folders" and choose import from iphoto.
    I have 87,0000 pictures.
    It fails saying "import failed".
I check the disk, and the files are there but no pictures in the catalog.
I try to remove the files that it says are damaged.  I have done that.  I still get "import failed" with no report of why.
I see many other posts with this same issue, and no good solution.
I tried to create a new catalog, no difference.
    Help!
    Mac OS X
    Elements 12.0
I have had Elements for the mac for 3 months now and still can't use it!

I did the "from iPhoto" and got the problem listed above.  I want the whole library transferred.
I am looking for a solution to the elements defect listed above.  If I import the library, and it has a problem with a single photo, it should not import that photo, but do the rest.  It is not doing that, it is failing and not importing anything.
This is especially frustrating since it take hours to import the library, then when it is 95% done, it fails and imports nothing.

  • After importing from iPhoto, how would you eliminate the photos?

I have installed Aperture adn like it quite a bit. I imported from iPhoto (which copies over the pictures...not move.)
I have backed up the photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive in case Aperture blows up on me and I need to go back to iPhoto. But now that I have done that, what is the suggested way to get all those pictures out of iPhoto? so I can get back that disk space.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what's wrong with simply deleting and then emptying the trash?

  • Exporting .mov files from iPhoto...

My iPhone barely has free memory so I wanted to transfer my pictures and videos from my Camera Roll to iPhoto. Then, I tried exporting all those files to my external hard drive. After waiting for an hour, exporting was finished but I observed something weird: the size of the folder containing all of the photos and videos that were just exported was 16GB, while it is said in iTunes that those files should take up 21GB of memory. I tried to investigate why. Scrolling down, I noticed that nothing seemed to be wrong with all of the photos (.jpg). But, when I tried to play the videos (.mov), the QuickTime Player only displayed a black screen with no accompanying audio. I tried using VLC, but it wouldn't play anything as well. The duration of the videos were the same, though. So, my speculation is that the reason why the folder had a smaller size was that the videos imported from iPhoto weren't properly copied. Afterwards, I checked the file properties of one .mov file. To my surprise, the videos were working in the preview found in the lower portion of the properties tab. The size of one video was: 70,255 bytes (131 KB on disk). That kinda confused me because (even though I'm not a tech buff), I know that 70,255 bytes is not equal to 131 kb (unless you can prove otherwise). I also do not know what "on disk" exactly means --- maybe this is the reason why the folder says it has a size of 16 gb instead of 21 gb? I really do not know...
OK, so I tried to give what I thought was helpful info so that I may receive a solution to my problem. If ever you need to ask for more information that may be necessary for you to answer my case, please do state what they are. I'll check on this question from time to time and I'll try to respond as immediately as possible. Thank you!

    Thanks for the questions TD!
    Mac Pro OS X 10.9.2
Ipad is 7.0.6 and the videos are still on my Ipad and I can play them on the Ipad.  This is where they were originally created, on my Ipad, March 2013.
    Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2
No, the videos do not play in Iphoto.  They have the camera icon on the lower left identifying them as a video and the seconds or minutes, as the as the case may be on the lower right, ex. 0:23, and also identified as a Quicktime movie with size information, ex. 480x640, 12.2 MB.
Some of the videos were taken in portrait and some in landscape, same problem regardless of orientation.
I have videos created before this date and after which play fine and also which exported with no problem.  Haven't tried all of them because I have a lot of videos but just a few to test.
I'm now wondering if I can simply delete the videos from Iphoto and reupload them from the Ipad since they are still on there and playing no problem.  Or has the software changed and is no longer directly responsive.
I appreciate your time and any suggestions you may have for this particular problem.

  • Imported from iphoto want a do-over

Purchased a new iMac.  Transfered my old iPhoto library (thousands of photos) to iPhoto on new iMac because I wanted to transfer those from iPhoto to Elements 11 which I just purchased.  My plan was to use Elements to organize and edit.   I used the import from iphoto option in Elements to import my iPhoto library.  None of the original dates came with my photos!
I read another forum post here which discussed why this occurred.  I think I understood that information but I now need to know the quickest way to remove all those folders of pictures that have incorrect dates from Elements so I can try again.  Can someone please direct me as to how to start over?  Thank you!

Barbara - I created a folder and put all the photos into it so they are not associated with iPhoto anymore.  Then I selected import from PSE Organizer and chose the pictures that I wanted to import.  They import with the "Date Modified" as the original date and "Date Created" as today's date or the import date.  So, your directions worked and I'm on my way to getting something done, finally.  Thank you!
My final thoughts:  I'm very disappointed with the way the "import from iphoto" option works.  I don't understand why the program wasn't designed to bring along the date from the exif data.  Organizing a lifetime of family photos greatly depends on the photo's original date.

  • Wrong photo will import from iPhoto window

During the normal course of editing, all of the photos that were in the movie were overprinted with a random movie clip still. The thumbnails in the project window still show the intended photo, but only the new clip still will show during playback. By right-clicking the photo and doing "Show in Finder", the correct .jpg file is referenced. When I try to drag the correct photo back in from the photo media window, a photo will be brought in, but it will be one that appears a few spots away in the list from the intended one. The thumbnail remains the correct photo. I believe something has become corrupted in my iMovie project that will not show the correct photo, even though the program is internally pointing to the correct photo. Very frustrating, as I have lost many days of careful editing. Made a copy of the project and have tried many things, to no avail.
Anyone have an idea? Is there a parameter file or something that I can delete that will reset things? Thanks very much.

The distortion/blurriness may arise due to the size of the photo being imported from iPhoto.
iMovie HD 6 appears to have problems handling very large photos - these should be resized (not cropped) in iPhoto before being imported to iMovie HD. The process is described in this post by Karl Petersen on 14/04/2007:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4389924#4389924
Karl describes the process very thoroughly (as always) in Point 3 of his post.
Doing as Karl suggests may not, of course, help in your particular case but it's certainly worth a try.

  • How do I transfer movie clips from iPhoto to iPad?

How do I transfer movie clips from iphoto on my iMac, to my iPad?

You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

OK, that's a bit more information.
iMovie was probably already running when you imported the pictures into iPhoto and wasn't aware of the last import.
Try to quit iMovie and iPhoto, then launch iMovie again. The last import should show up.
