Organize within a stack

I have many stacks of multiple photos. Often due to pre-Aperture methods of created various versions for high res, printing, low res,b&w,email, web use, etc.
Is there a way in AP2 to open a stack and arrange it by file size with the largest file being the pick automatically? Or by pixel size or any other metadata for that matter. Thanks.

And to be a little more specific, say I have a stack with 20 images. There may be 2 large color TIFF files, three large JPeg files, afew GIFFs and some smaller jpeg files of various sizes. Since Aperture generates lower res and other options from a Master file depending on how I am going to use it, I no longer need all these versions of the same image for different purposes. I like this. I want to trash all the low res versions and only work with the high res image. In the end, I want to compare the two large TIFF files (likely two scans of the same image) and see which is the better image to work with. If I could organize my stacks by file size automatically, this will make quick work of weeding out the, well, weeds I guess. The library is 10,000+. Lots of stacks.
By the way, is there a way to create a smart album with the search criteria "image is in a stack".
Thanks

  • Sorting of images within a stack

When working with stacks some strange things happen:
    - When trying to duplicate one image out of the stack into an album the whole stack is moved to the album. When I than delete this stack in the album the order of the images of the same stack in my projects is changed.
    - When rejecting images within a stack my rejected images are not automatically moved to the rejected images folder. Instead these images stay in the stack even so they are marked as rejected.
    - When sorting images within a stack by using different ratings and than trying to limit the image view by showing for instance only images with 3 stars or more nothing happens. Also showing rejected images only does not work within a stack. Instead showing images by rating is applied to the whole project and not only the stack
Do I do something wrong or is this a known apperture bug?

David, your understanding (use) of stacks is causing a conflict. The whole idea is basically to group a series of similar images and choose the best one of that series, called the Pick. Then, within that series you can rank those images in an order of Pick to next best, and so on. You can view stacks open or closed - when closed, the Pick is the one on top.
Here's some info from the Help Menu that will help answer your questions:
Note: When you place a stack in a book album or web gallery or web journal album, Aperture displays the stack pick. If you drag a stacked image that is not the stack pick into the book or web gallery or web journal album, Aperture reminds you to select the stack pick. If you don’t want to place the pick in the album, but want to use a different version from within the stack, select the version you want and then make it the album pick by choosing Stacks > Set Album Pick.
    Dragging Stacks
You can drag an entire stack to a new location, and you can drag specific images within a stack to a new location. When a stack is closed, dragging the stack moves the entire stack. When a stack is open, you can drag individual versions to new locations in the Browser. You can also drag images into a stack. If you drag a stacked image into a different project, however, the entire stack moves to the new location.
If you still want to be able to use a stacked image as you have stated, then take that image out of the stack, split the stack, or create a version of the image and remove it from the stack.
Take a quick refresher through the help menu - it will give you some further details and ideas so you can accomplish exactly what you need to do.
    Hope that helps!!

  • Creation of the organization within SIM

    Hello!
How i can automatically сreate several organizations within SIMs Top?
I can create CSV file with organization parameters (or database table), but i don't know how it is possible to load this file to IDM.

  • Segment organization within tablespace

    Hi There,
I was trying to organize objects within the tablespaces and moving things around when I got up to this:
I needed to get rid of the PROD_T3 tablespace so I moved everything out of it apart from the below
    SQL> select owner,segment_name,segment_type, TABLESPACE_NAME,bytes/1024/1204 from dba_Segments where tablespace_name='PROD_T3' order by 3;
    OWNER                SEGMENT_NAME                   SEGMENT_TYPE       TABLESPACE_NAME                BYTES/1024/1204
    PROD                 PK_VOTER_REG_DOC               INDEX              PROD_T3                          122.471761
    PROD                 SYS_IL0000186869C00026$$       LOBINDEX           PROD_T3                          .053156146
    PROD                 SYS_LOB0000186869C00026$$      LOBSEGMENT         PROD_T3                          .053156146

PROD                 BIN$IEDOLJmsSj6isKTb5Z2cOQ==$0 TABLE              PROD_T3                          .053156146and so I started investigating each segment in the tablespace:
    SQL> select owner, index_name, table_name, tablespace_name, status from dba_indexes where index_name='PK_VOTER_REG_DOC';
    OWNER                INDEX_NAME                     TABLE_NAME                     TABLESPACE_NAME        STATUS
    PROD                 PK_VOTER_REG_DOC               VOTER_REG_DOC                  PROD_T3                VALID
    SQL> select owner, table_name, tablespace_name, status from dba_tables where table_name='VOTER_REG_DOC';
    OWNER                TABLE_NAME                     TABLESPACE_NAME                STATUS
PROD                 VOTER_REG_DOC                                                 VALIDI'm a bit surprised form the above that there isn't a tablespace?!! I can describe the table and get a count for the number of rows in there:
    SQL> desc prod.VOTER_REG_DOC
    Name                                                                     Null?    Type
    VOTER_ID                                                           NOT NULL NUMBER(10)
    CARD_NO                                                              NOT NULL CHAR(9)
    SQL> select count(*) from prod.VOTER_REG_DOC;
      COUNT(*)
       3656468But when I look at dba_segments, I can't see it:
    SQL> select owner,segment_name, segment_type , tablespace_name from dba_segments where owner='PROD' and segment_name='VOTER_REG_DOC' order by 1,2
    no rows selected
    SQL>
    SQL> select owner,segment_name, segment_type , tablespace_name from dba_segments where owner='PROD' and segment_name like '%VOTER_REG%' order by 2,3;
    OWNER                SEGMENT_NAME                   SEGMENT_TYPE       TABLESPACE_NAME
    PROD                 PK_VOTER_REG_DOC               INDEX              PROD_T3
SQL>Where am I going wrong with this? Also, I was surprised to see an object or a segment called "BIN$IEDOLJmsSj6isKTb5Z2cOQ==$0" ? I thought any BIN* would be sitting in DBA_RECYCLEBIN as the object(s) been deleted or am I wrong?
    Appreciate the help.
    Cheers

I believe you will find that you are looking at the definition entry for an index organized table.
    select IOT_TYPE from dba_tables where table_name = 'VOTER_REG_DOC'
if it returns 'IOT' then that is what you have.

    Bingo..
    SQL> select owner, IOT_TYPE from dba_tables where table_name = 'VOTER_REG_DOC';
    OWNER                IOT_TYPE

  • Exact meaning of IL offset within a stack trace.

I understand that when an exception is thrown (and there's no PDB around) the stack trace exposes the IL offset of where the exception arose (in the lowest frame).
I'm not very clear though on what this means, is it the IL offset of IL operation that thew the exception or is it the IL Offset of the previously executed IL operation or what?
I'm examining ILDASM dumps of assemblies and the IL offset sometimes doesn't quite make sense.
e.g. one null reference exception reports an offset IL_0063 in the stack frame, but that is just an operation br.s
Any help on exactly how the system determines the IL offset when it reports the stack trace, greatly appreciated.
    Thx

Regardless of whether or not there is a PDB, managed code is able to provide a full trace with method names for the managed portion of the stack due to the metadata within the assembly. Where are you getting the offset? The offset that visual studio provides
is the native offset within the jitted native method rather than the IL offset within its managed counterpart (or at least it was in VS2010, I haven't verified it since then).
My understanding is that, when provided, the IL offset is simply mapped from the native offset using a table generated at JIT time (which may be an approximation due to optimizations). For the leaf native-frame, the native offset is where the exception was
thrown while non-leaf native frames use the return address from the stack which may make it look like the exception was thrown by the instruction following the one where the exception actually happened.

  • How Do I Open a "Edit in Progress" Photo in the Organizer in a Stacked File

I have a photo in my organizer which indicates "edit in progress".  This photo is one of three in a version set.  I am unable to open this file to continue the editing.
Also, when I complete editing a photo and "save as" a JPEG file I keep getting the dialog box which asks if I want to save the changes made.  What am I doing wrong in "save as"?
PLEASE NOTE THAT IN DOING "SAVE AS" I AM ALSO SAVING THE EDITED PHOTO IN THE IWORKS PICTURE FILE.

Okay, you didn't mention that you've also got iPhoto involved in this. If you want to use organizer, don't try to use iphoto at the same time, and vice versa.
If you do want to use iphoto, you're going about it in a way that can cause a lot of grief down the road. To use iphoto with PSE you have two options:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor, send the photo from iphoto, save (not save as) without changing the name or format and iphoto will keep your last edited version plus the original.
    2. Export from iphoto to the desktop, use file>Open in PSE, save the edited photo under a new name and reimport it to iphoto as a new file. More details here:
    http://barbarabrundage.com/2010/11/29/using-photoshop-elements-9-with-iphoto/
I still don't really understand exactly what you're doing, but I can tell you for sure you're making this immensely harder than it needs to be.

  • Detect clicked cluster in mouse down event for clusters within multiple stacked clusters

With the help of Ben (see http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/Determine-cluster-element-clicked-in-mouse-down-event/td-p/1245770)
I could easily find out what sub-cluster had been clicked on (mouse down event) within the main cluster, by using the Label.Text Property.
However if you have a cluster within a cluster within a cluster then you probably have to use individual mouse down events for each sub-sub cluster.
I just wanted to use one "Main Cluster":Mouse Down event and from that determine which of the sub-sub clusters had been clicked on - is this even remotely possible?

Yes but... you will have to pass through 26 Kudos worth of Nuggets to get there (Well maybe you can skip the last 5 or so).
This Nugget by Ton teaches us how to use Dynamic Event Registration. (15 Kudos, must read and understand)
This Nugget by me talks about getting at references inside arbitrary data structures. (11 Kudos, You don't have to read the whole thing, only enough to get at nested objects).
SO use the stuff I wrote about to gather up the references to the clusters. Build them into an array and then use dynamic event registration and what you learned in that thread you linked in your question.
    So Possible? Yes!

  • PSE8 Organizer: Can't stack photos in album view?

Why can't I manually create stacks when I am only looking at photos from a specific album?
For example, if I am showing all photos in the catalog, I am free to multi-select photos and do a right-click >Stack. The same is true if I have filtered the view down by tags, or by import batch. However, if I have selected an album from the Albums list, stacking is no longer an option. Photos that have already been stacked and exist in the album show as stacked, and I can even unstack them (if I right-click the stack, Stack > Unstack Photos is an option, as is Flatten Stack), but if I am not able to create stacks or add photos to stacks. Why is this?

    Hi nick,
Checked on PSE10. It does allow stacking when in Album view. However it doesn't allow  so in 8 and 9.
You might want to try 30day free trial of PSE10 as it is full of some great features

  • Auto Sync metadata within a stack?

Is there a setting to enable pictures in the same stack to auto sync metadata?  Currently, if you select pictures in grid view, it will only select the top picture.  So after I have updated keyword, etc, I must manually expand each stack and update the other pictures in that stack.  Is there an easier way?

No, by design, Lr will only apply metadata or develop settings to the top image in a Collapsed Stack. So, the only way is to apply metadata to expanded stack.

  • File organization within iWeb

I created a lovely site using iWeb, but it is not searchable because it doesn't seem to have meta tags. I need to recreate it in Dreamweaver, but I don't know where iWeb puts the files, in particular graphics and images. Can someone help with this?

iWeb stores all the objects in the domain.sites2 file in
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
It's a package. You open it with Right-Click > Show package content.
There are no HTML files inside.
The only HTML files are in the iDisk/Web/Sites/Sitename folder or in the folder you publish to from the filemenu.

  • Sort images within stack by rating?

    Hi Gang,
I'm editing a massive job and there's one part of the process that is taking forever. After I've rated every image within a stack, I seem to have to resort them manually to be shown from highest rating to lowest rating, either by dragging or by using the "promote/demote" buttons.
Is there any way to make images in a stack sort themselves by rating? This would literally save me hours of time.

I know of no way to automatically stack by rating. You could create Smart Albums with only certain ratings included. I know that's not exactly what you wanted to do, but it would accomplish a segregation of your photos by rating.
Sorry not to be able to provide an answer, but I don't think there is one.

  • "Fill base line"/"Fill to" problem within stack plots

    Hi there,
I try to plot multi data sets within the stack plots waveform chart. But I can't control the Fill To option correctly for the plots other than the first plot in the window. As attached, even I set the fill baseline to zero for the second plot (the green one) in the first window, it performs like fill to -infinity. I am using Labview 2010 DS2.
Any solution? Or, I made any mistake here?
    Thanks.

Stack Plot Fill Baseline.vi ‏12 KB

I agree things behave a bit weird if the number of traces is not a multiple of the number of stacked plots. Do you want three stacked plots or have two traces share one of the plots? Maybe you should use more defined data structures, e.g. an array where each element is a clusters of size=3.
    Try the following:
resize the plot legend so 4 stacked plots show.
Now resize it again for two stacked plots.
In my case, the fill to zero is now correct.

  • ARW to DNG & JPG: organizer versions/stacks?

I shot a bunch of photos raw only semi-inadvertantly. (Been looking for an excuse to figure out a raw workflow, guess I found it.)
So I've figured out how to use PSE Organizer 12/PSE 12 to batch the ARW to DNG then JPG or straight to JPG. Easy enough. (Though someow the first time through I ended up wioth two DNGs for each one. Still not sure exactly how I did that...)
But that path seems to be complely divorced from the Organizer. I'd like the ancilary products (DNG/JPG) to be saved as Version Sets or Stacks with the original raw files. No Joy. I tagged the ARW and did the whole face recognition thing with the raw files. I'd like that metadata to somehow pass forward to the DNG/JPG. No Joy.
Am I missing something? Just not supposed to batch this? (Given number of files, sigh.) Not supposed to tag anything at the raw stage? Just not suppsed to use Organizer? Expected to separately import the ancialary products into Organizer and stack them myself?

Can you detail your steps to batch the ARW raw files ? The usual way in the organizer is the 'export' function, and in the editor it's the 'process multiple files' option in the file menu.
But that path seems to be complely divorced from the Organizer. I'd like the ancilary products (DNG/JPG) to be saved as Version Sets or Stacks with the original raw files. No Joy. One important thing about saving to DNG. There is no way to save in version sets with the original raw files. Why do you want to save as DNG ? I don't see a way to batch convert raw files to DNG from the Organizer. You can open several raw files in the ACR dialog of the editor and use the 'save' button to save all selected raw files to DNG. If you save to a 'watched' folder, you'll be prompted to add those DNGs to the catalog. Once in the organizer, you could stack them manually with the originals.
To batch convert raw files to DNG, I would use the free Adobe DNGconverter software; it's a standalone program which runs outside of Elements.

  • Stacking order vs. Layers?

I'm coming from working with layers in Photoshop and understanding how they work in there. Illustrator also has layers, though you are able to also change the stacking order of items on a given layer  by using the object > send to back or forward.
    1. Why would you want to send items to the front or back and not just use layers?
    2. When do you want to put an item on a new layer vs. just changing its stacking order?
    Thanks.

    Stan,
The point you are missing is a conceptual problem common among many users who have some experience with Photoshop (or other raster image program), but next to none with programs like Illustrator (drawing programs) or InDesign (page assembly programs).
The key difference is this: Fundamentally, a Photoshop file is, ultimately, one single raster image. An Illustrator (InD, CorelDraw, FreeHand, Canvas, Flash, Firworks, etc., etc.) file is a collection of individual objects.
In object-based programs, all the objects are located somewhere in one big Z-stacking order. Think of Layers in these kinds of programs as just one heirarchal "level" of "grouping" contiguous objects within the stack. There are several other such organizational "levels". For example:
AnchorPoints exist in the one big Z stacking order. Sets of contiguous anchorPoints are "grouped" (connected) into paths.
Sets of contiguous paths are sometimes "grouped" (combined) into compound paths.
Sets of contiguous objects—including paths and/or text objects and/or raster images (each with its own color model, color depth, rotation, scale, DPI)—can be "grouped" into Groups.
Sets of contiguous objects can be "grouped" into (reside on) Layers.
Groups can be nested. You can have Groups inside other Groups.
Layers can be nested. You can have SubLayers inside other Layers.
In Illustrator and some other vector drawing programs, the Layers palette does not just list Layers. It lists every object on each Layer.
All this organizational scheme is useful and important because of that one fundamental difference: These are object based programs. Now compare this to Photoshop. Yes, a Photoshop document can have Layers. But what is a Photoshop Layer really? It's just another raster image of the same color mode, same color depth, and same pixel count as the Layer(s) underneath or above it. The color values of corresponding pixels in any of the channels of each Layer can be mathematically combined to result in the color you see in that pixel location on your monitor and in the final result. But you don't have a stack of independent raster images. Think about it: In Photoshop, you don't have a 100 PPI CMYK image in Layer 1 while you have a 300 PPI RGB image in Layer 2.
But in an object-based program, you can have a stack of any number of raster images, and each one can be scaled independently without loosing any of its pixels. In other words, the pixels in individual raster images on the page can be different sizes from the pixels in other raster images on the same page. Then you can throw live text objects and paths into the mix, as well.
So more elaborate and flexible ways to organize objects is critically important in these kinds of programs. Example:
You set up a Layer to contain the background raster images of a magazine ad. There are several images, and they are independently scaled and positioned, sometimes overlapping. They need to be sorted in Z-order within that Layer. The Layer enables that particular set of objects (raster images) to be treated as if they were one object.
In the same ad, you set up a Layer to contain the body text.
In the same ad, you set up a Layer to contain the photo captions.
In the same ad, you set up a Layer to contain an elaborate vector illustration.
Within that vector illustration are hundreds of individual objects. Those are organized into subLayers and/or Groups. But the parent Illustration Layer lets you turn off visiblilty or lock the whole Illustration.
And so on. So there are counless reasons "why you would want to send items to front or back" or change the stacking order of objects within a specific Layer—because there are countless situations in which different organizational levels make sense in terms of working efficiency. There is no single one-size-fits-all answer to your question. But trust me, all the Z-stack organizational "levels" are important. And they are all standard fare in object-based vector illustration and page layout programs.
