Organizer search - the "Exclude" command

Having just read the "PS6 - Tags in category and subcategory" thread, I've got to ask if this is new with PSE6 - or did it in an earlier version, and I just failed to notice?
I am right aren't I? It's now possible, with the correct tag hierarchy, to make "WITH this but WITHOUT that" selections, so I can now isolate the pictures:
of a particular person without any of their ex-boyfriends / girlfriends / husbands / wives etc and yet still include those that also feature other people
or taken while NOT on holiday
or of all churches that AREN'T in Italy, Spain or Greece?
How wonderful is that? I've removed PSE3 and can't check for myself so do tell me, as I just can't believe it's been there all along!
As a PS - after a quick try, it does seem to require that you make an exact selection.
For instance (and I think unlike the INCLUDE search) if you EXCLUDE a category or sub-category it only cuts out the images that bear the tag of that particular cat or sub-cat, and not those that don't have them but DO have a tag situated in tier below that cat or sub-cat.

Thanks for posting back that you found your own answer. After reading your initial post I was sitting here trying to remember was EXCLUDE added in v3 or v4 - but you answered v3. So now I can go back to drinking my morning coffee.
However, for v6 I think that there are threads on this forum reporting that EXCLUDE does not work on all tags under a sub-Category. (don't know about a Category) Many view this as a bug, because I think that it does work in the previous versions that had Exclude.
So it does seem that in v6 you will be limited to doing the EXCLUDE on specific tags.

In my PSE 6 organizer I have tagged my photios and have various subcategories under a master category. The exclude command only excludes photos in the top directory not to subcategories.

First, you need to make sure that the TC is configured correctly.
o Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule.
o Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
o Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
o Make sure that a check mark is entered next to "Allow this network to be extended"
o Update to save changes
o Disconnect the ethernet cable after the TC has restarted
Next, move the Express close to your computer
o Temporarily, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express
o Open AirPort Utility - Click Manual Setup
o Click the Wireless tab
o Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
o Wireless Network Name = Same name as your TC network
o Enter a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
o Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your TC network
o Wireless Password = Exact same password as your TC network
o Confirm Password
o Update to save settings
o Disconnect the ethernet cable and move the Express to the desired location approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance from the TC to the area that needs more wireless coverage. Minimize any obstructions in the signal path.
o Power up the Express in the new location

Rsync - it simply ignores the "exclude" command...

I'm using rsynch to make backups to several remote volumes, mounted to my desktop.
(in case you care, one is a NAS drive; others are big hard drives in an old G4 that is largely a aserver now)
Aside from some odd timestamp issues, it works great.
But i want to exclude several folders and filetypes that are not essential can can literally take 10+ hours (like 100,000 email files).
I have tried the exclude command, using many format variations (as found on various internet sites). I have also tried it as "exclude-from" and created am exclude from types file (excludes.txt).
here's a sample of my latest, but i tried many permutations:
rsync -av -e --exclude-from=excludes.txt /usr/bin/ssh /Users/gfl/Documents/Grants /Volumes/90G_G4_Share/exclude_test/
This syncs to a volume mounted locally, ut physically on an old G4 server.
I also tried:
rsync -av -e --exclude=Mail/ usr/bin/ssh /Users/gfl/Documents/Grants /Volumes/90G_G4_Share/exclude_test/
and
rsync -av -e --exclude 'Mail/' usr/bin/ssh /Users/gfl/Documents/Grants /Volumes/90G_G4_Share/exclude_test/
Suggestions?
Would i be better off using rcp? For the kinds of updates i typically make, i'm not sure the delta algorithm is all that important. The slow part of copying for me is the remote processor (a cheap-$h1t WD SMB NAS drive) -- not the network. Copying to the G4 machine is much, much quicker.

One gneral update. After reading a few responses here, and reading elsewhere, and some experimentation, i tried the following:
rsync -av -e --exclude="Library/Mail/" --exclude="Documents/Microsoft User Data/" /usr/bin/ssh /Users/gfl/ /Volumes/80G_FW/gfl_backup
I also tried (earlier):
rsync -av -e --exclude="*.emlx" --exclude="Documents/Microsoft User Data/" /usr/bin/ssh /Users/gfl/ /Volumes/80G_FW/gfl_backup
Oddly, i'm making progress and that's making me even more confused. In both cases the "Documents/Microsoft UUser Data" was NOT backed up (hooray!), but also in both cases the mail files (all, like 50,000 of them) were.. The syntax of the wo looks identical, so i simply don't get it.
I'll also ask again, if maybe rcp would be a better choice. I dont modify that many files, and my network is fast. Wht i'm finding is that the remote compare -especially on older servers and the dog-slow NAS drive, take forver. Maybe its easier to just copy them- since 99.99% of the files dont change really ever.

Rsync --exclude command .... well, doesn't

I use rsync all the time to keep backups or machines synced.
I like to use the --exclude command to eliminate things that ar enot needed and are slow or take up lots of space. A good example is an address book archive file whcih can take HOURS to sync to my NAS drive - and seems to have a timestamp issue that means it re-writes every darned entry.
Anyway.
I have the weird situation where i may hev 3 or 4 --exclude commands sequentially. The first 3 work, the 4th simply doesn't. I have no idea why. My syntax is, for example:
rsync -avr --delete [source] --exclude 'Microsoft User Data' --exclude Library/Mail --exclude Library/Caches -exclude Documents/Rolodex [destination]
The Documents/olodex folder is NOT excluded.
One update, i just saw something odd in textedit's behaviour, and i think it may be invisibly changing the formatting of the "--X" tag. Maybe in writing this note i finally found it :-)

That's why I asked that question. 10.9 still ships with rsync 2.6.9, but 2.6.9 does not deal correctly with resource forks. Any minor change to file metadata can trick rsync into updating the entire file as though content data had changed. Go the the rsync home page and download version 3.x.x (I installed it in /usr/local/bin so that the system still had access to the version of rsync it expects, just to be on the safe side).
3.x.x handles resource forks correctly, but note that there were some significant changes in syntax. For instance, 2.6.9 used -E to handle (badly) extended attributes, while -X isn't used; in 3.x.x they added the -X flag for extended attributes and retasked -E for preserving executablity. Read the man page carefully when updating scripts.

How to pass multiple words as a search argument on the Acrobat Command Line?

I am trying to launch Acrobat using a multi-word search parameter on a Windows XP box. However, Acrobat is stripping the spaces between words. For example, I am trying to load Acrobat and have it search for the phrase "vision changes" using a Command Line like this:
C:\>"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" /A search="vision changes" c:\temp\theDocument.pdf
When Acrobat loads, it shows the search panel with the phrase "visionchanges" in it. The space between the two words is gone and naturally it can't find the phrase.
I have read both the PDF Command Line parameter documents I could find. This format works fine for URLs, but for Shelling Acrobat on the local system, it doesn't work because of the space stripping problem. I have tried lots of different variants of quote characters, escape characters, even HTML characters like "&nbps;", but nothing works.
Does anyone have an answer?

Hey Robert,
Did you note that in the "pdf_open_parameters.pdf" document, it says that the value of the Search parameter is treated as a list of (single) words, not as a string of words (phrase)?
It says it explicitly: "You can search only for single words. You cannot search for a string of words."
PS: I'm replying to your query as a sort of thank you for posting the links to those documents. It helped me to find the way of conditioning how to open a pdf.

It's not clear what you're trying to do. A lot has changed with Spotlight in the "over 7 years" since that article was written.
What, specifically, are you looking to do? I don't really understand "change the default command-F search criteria."

I'd recommend her "Take Control of Spotlight" book if you want all the ins and outs. There's a lot you can do, and certain a LOT MORE with ML than with Tiger.

IMac is running slow again after upgrading Memory to 6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. Mail is especially slow. I have searched the community info, but I am really a novice and most of the solutions appear to be beyond my level of proficiency. Please help!

I am at a loss. even after reading other questions and responses. After upgrading to Mt. Lion, everything on my iMac slowed down. I knew more memory would be needed, so I went from 2G to 6G. That worked for awhile, but now, about 3 weeks later, things are slowing down again. Mail is especially slow, when moving from one message to another, and also just plain typing is delayed in mail. iPhoto has had the spinning wheel issue since change to Mt. Lion, but it eventually stops and the app itself is functional, so this is just annoying as much as anything.
Any easy, simple to follow instructions would be appreciated. Is it better for a novice to take to the Genius Bar or to an approved Mac repair center in my area, rather than attempt some of the solutions I've seen offered here. And, if I do, what's the likelihood the issues will be resolvable?? Clearly, I am not the only one with this issue ...

There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.

Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)

Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

I use both add to search and organize search, FF34 has no search box, how do I add one?

I tend to use Site Search, if available, instead of bookmarks, I use "add to searchbar" to make the proper xml file, and then I use organize search to group by category.. (373 user search xml files currently) as soon as FireFox upgraded to 34, I see a blank space on the toolbar instead of the searchbox.. I need the searchbox to get at all my saved search providers. BTW, "Search Using" works normal, providing my expected menu of organized providers. Same problem/symptoms, both Windows 7 systems I use.

If you want to restore the previously used standalone window to manage search engines then you can toggle this pref to false with a middle-click on the about:config page.

Could not complete the Crop command because of a program error - Win 7

So I use PS CC everyday for cropping out images from design mockups for websites.
Yesterday (1 April 2014) I got a new comp from the designer with some updated images. So I opend the comp, and began to setup the cropped area with my guides. I then grabbed the marquee tool and made my selection, clicked Image->Crop, and then I get an error message.
"Could not complete the Crop command because of a program error."
Well that is helpful.
So now its "Help me Google, you're my only hope.", after about an hour or so of searching this error I find that it mostly happens to Mac users. I am using Windows 7. I also find that people are trying to get information form a PSErrorLog.txt file that is suppsoed to be located in the "Preferences Folder"... again I am on Windows 7.
So more searching to find the Windows eqivelant of this file's location: C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CC\Adobe Photoshop CC Settings
Only to find there is no PSErrorLog.txt file. I do have a sniffer-out.txt file and a bunch of .psp files, a SynchFiles folder and 2 Workspaces folders (one Modified).
So I say to myself, "Well, I have cloud and a fast connection, won't take long to reinstall." So I delete PS ( I am also runnig DW, FL, Br, and AI ), and PS only. I do not run the cleaner tool as it only wants to delete a PS driver, or EVERYTHING!, which I do not want to do, I just want to delete PS. So I delete PS and check for anything left behind (why is there always stuff left behind? Apparently DELETE really means "Only delete some parts of the app that are required to make it work, and leave the rest behind.", or something.). Anyway, I then reinstall, go to crop again, and get the same error.
So here I am, "Help me Adobe Forums, you're my only hope."

You are correct. But none of that information, or those parameters, have ever had any effect on cropping anything in PS before. I crop vector smart objects brought in from AI all the time. In this case, yes the layers I am trying to crop are vector smart objects, which I rasterized and merged, then resaved the document and still get the same issue.
But, going off of your suggestion, I did flatten the image completely and I am now able to crop it without error. I suspect that there is something else in the layers that maybe causing this issue, as you have mentioned.
Thank you for your input, while you may not have known it, you gave me at least somewhere to start to try and figure out what is happening.

How to call the system commands in java other than using
exec() function.For eg, in my linux machine i have used p.exec("exit") to exit from a cshell to the prompt but it is not working.Is there any other solution for this one. Pls. do provide a solution for this.It is quite Urgent.

Can I search the current set path in a script?

I have on my machine a folder full of mathscript commands and functions. This folder is beginning to get quite large and I'd like to be able to clean it up a bit by grouping the files into sub-folders.  For example, I'd like to create the following folders;
C:\MatrixXTools
C:\MatrixXTools\StringTools
C:\MatrixXTools\VariableTools
Of course, this would be fine if I was to set the path to every folder individually. What I want to do though, is to set my path manually to C:\MatrixXTools and then put a command in there called 'import'. The 'import' command would be responsible for searching the current path for a given folder and then adding it to the path when it finds it. So to import the StringTools, I would just call
import "StringTools"
All of my base scripts would go into C:/MatrixXTools and then if a script needed to use the StringTools, I could just call the import function.
The problem I have is that I can't find a command that will return me the path into a string vector. Is there some way of doing this? 'SHOW PATH' doesn't do what I want it to because it just shows the path and doesn't give me a way of programmatically viewing it.
Is there a better method of getting everything into sub-folders all together?
I realise that I could also do this using the startup script, however I have the tools in revision control (svn) so that other people can use them - I don't want to have to get everyone to change their startup script every time I make a new folder - I should be able to do this in the scripts.
Note: we are still on v62.2 and we are looking into upgrade options.

You can get the show path output into a string using === operator.
   [showPathStr,] === show path;
You can break up the showPathStr on the new line characters
into a string vector using the split function.
The split function was added in MATRIXx 7.1.9. The split function internally
uses the index and stringex functions to create the split string vector.
   showPathVector = split(""n",showPathStr);
If you try out the split function and look at the algorithm you will need to
download and eval MATRIXx 7.1.9 or higher.
Also, instead of changing startup.ms everytime you add a tools directory, why not
have startup.ms execute another script (i.e. execute file = toolsetup.ms) and you
would only update toolsetup.ms when adding a new tools directory.

Why do we have to install 2 add ins for something that should be built in? Please add this to the next version or an update to this one even. We should see the full path of a bookmark when we search for it. Show Parent Folder alone isn't enough if you have sub folders, so I installed Go Parent Folder as well in case of sub folders.

Problem in searching the document

We've uploaded a ppt file into our KM repository. Similarly we've uploaded some other files (txt, doc, etc..) at the same location. But the problem here is, when we are searching the ppt document with search option the document (ppt) is not getting displayed. We are able to search other documents (txt, doc, etc..) which are resided in the same folder.
I've checked index information of the ppt file and found below information for the Service types: Clasification, the status of resource is : OK index operation.But for the service types: Search, the satus of resource is: No information available.
No schedule was defined for the index and we are able to fetch all other documents from different folders under the same repository.
What could be the problem.

I want to import my favourites from IE but the import command in Firefox is greyed out

I've just moed over from IE to Firefox and want to import my favourites from IE using the Firefox import command. But whatever I try I cannot get the import command under the File tab to "ungrey".
