Organizing acts and scenes

Hello All,
We do 30 minute movies at work for fun. In the past I'd used iMovie and am now trying Final Cut Pro X. In the movie we have multiple Acts and multiple Scenes within Acts. It seems to me to be better to not have these all in one Timeline in FCPX. I started down the path of having each Act be a Folder and each Scene be a Project. That seemed a great way to organize the sequences. It just struck me, though, will I be able to combine projects?
When I did this in iMovie each Scene was a project. I shared the Scenes when I was done with them and brought them back in to iMovie. That made working with all 30 - 40 minutes much easier.
What's the best way to do this with FCPX?

Hello All,
Honestly, I tried to search on this topic before I posted. Of course, once I posted, I found other threads asking the same question. Go figure.
For others that are looking, this one seems to be the best answer.

  • The images imported to my stage turn up as blank and render every image previous to the rogue imported image as red squares that fill the perimeters of the image which then renders the publishing and scene testing features in flash useless, what can i do

I have been working on animating a scene in flash for a few weeks and recently I have encountered a problem with importing my images on to the stage where the images I import do not turn up, however the key frame that I attempted to import the image onto shows that it is occupied by an image and every frame previous to the key frame that just imported an image that does not show turns up as a red square that fills the original perimeters of the image, there is no solution to this problem any where on the forum and the adobe technical support staff will not help me find a solution to this problem what can I do to get Flash running normally again and fix this problem?????
Also after the first time i publish a preview after i begin using flash, flash renders the publishing and scene testing features as useless and claims that there is no HTML template found, or if the images if i import any images onto the stage that come up blank and render every image previous to that image as a red square and then try and publish a preview  flash renders the publishing and scene testing features as useless and claims that there is no HTML template found. What can I do to fix this problem??? there is no solution on the web anywhere to this problem either.

I don't know if Flash has a memory limit of its own. The memory for your Flash file is based on the available memory on your computer.
There is a limit on the number of frames that you can have in any given timeline. I think that it's about 15000 frames, but that's a guess. Flash does all of its work at runtime, this means that no part of your animation is pre-compiled like it is in a video file. So the more objects that you have on the stage, the more work Flash has to do. It follows that the more objects that there are to animate, the more work your processor and the video card have to do.

Updated iPad 2 last night.  All movies (9) on my iPad can no longer be viewed.  The movie plays but the photos and scene selection are blank. How do I fix this

Quit the app and restart the iPad.
In order to quit or close apps - Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
    Try the videos app again.

  • Good saxophone, mouth organ, brass and banjo sounds

Does anyone know where i can get good saxophone, mouth organ, brass and banjo sounds?
Mainstage has them (except mouth organ), but I've heard better sounds on Roland machines.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Good you got it sorted. Tip: you could post this sort of question on the Logic Pro 8 forum too; the answer would be relevant to LP8 users too, and you'll certainly get more responses. Even if the question is specifically about Mainstage, you can try over there too.
    regards, Erik.

  • How do I make a slow  spinning movement so character and scene turns upside down?

How do I make a slow  spinning movement so character and scene turns upside down?
    It's for a dream sequence.

The better method (I feel) is to rotate the camera when shooting.
Certainly that is better. However, I don't have a way to do that, so I imagine that most people don't either. I can turn my tripod's head on its side, but upside down? Not so easy.
Having said that, there are camera cages designed to do that.
It is true that my way doesn't fill the frame so one way to handle that is to do it on a copy of the video on a higher track, and blur the heck out of the original to keep the frame filled. Some amount of blur is often associated with dream sequences.

  • Continuous background sound and scenes

Ok, my problem is as follows:
I have a Flash MX file with several scenes. With the first
scene starts my soundtrack which is as long as the flash movie is
going to be. This is supposed to play throughout the whole movie
    (and the scenes) without intteruption.
Now when the file is playing and scene 2 starts my background
will keep playing as wished, but on top of that a new instance of
the same sound will start playing. How do I get rif of this? Please
    help, I'm lost!

I tried, but I just can't figure it. I am quite new to flash.
I have inserted the file (mp3) in the first frame of scene 1
    of it's own layer.
    My property settings are:
    Tween: none
    Effect: none
    Sync: Start
    Loop: 0 times

  • Organizing albums and artwork

Hello.. I'm having trouble organizing my songs which are part of an album in iTunes. In the new grid album view of iTunes 8.0, I have all my songs appearing separately even though they are part of the same album and have the same artwork.
For example, there are 15 songs under Ministry of Sound and each appears as stand alone album containing one song each. It looks very disorganized since there are now 15 albums containing one song when it should be 1 album containing the 15 songs! And this is across my iTunes library and I've tried to drag and drop them into one but its not possible for some vague reason. Can anyone please tell me how to resolve this?
    Thank you.

Hi, your MoS album is a compilation. Select all the tracks, press CMD-I to open the Get Info box. On the Info tab enter *Various Artists* as the Album Artist and on the Options tab set Part of a compilation to Yes. You should also set the iTunes Advanced Preference *Group compliations when browsing*.
See below for an extensive list of iTunes organisation issues & workarounds.
    *Grouping tracks into albums*
The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover, append different numbers of spaces for each different album or set different values for the Sort Album.
iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. In iTunes, however, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us however, would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the album artist and clear the compilation flag.
Sadly the iPod ignores the Album Artist field when grouping albums which causes problems when some tracks list guest artists. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTMS handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate this is information about the track rather than part of the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading prepositions (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track until I reach disc 1.
With classical music you also need to be wary of alternative representations of artist/composers names. The menus will work best if for each composer you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard performer details or place these into the Description field. (I’d use Comments but iTunes has a habit of writing long hex strings into it for no readily apparent reason).

  • MVC - Organizing models and managing GUI windows

I'm having difficulty organizing my MVC models and basically controlling the whole application in general. My application works, but all the controlling logic is being dumped into the main class (Main.java). Here's a simple example of the problem I'm having:
    Objectives
    1) Display a list of Companies; i.e. Sun, Microsoft, Adobe, etc. (JFrame with a JList)
    2) The user select a Company and it pops up a new dialog with a list of Employees. (JDialog with a JList)
Here are the classes I came up with:
    Models:
    1) CompanyListModel
    2) EmployeeListModel
    Listeners:
    1) CompanyListener
    Views:
    1) CompanyListFrame
    2) EmployeeListDialog
    Domain Objects:
    1) Company
    2) Employee
And then there's the main application class. To implement the above objective, I've been using my main class to control the GUI.
Here's an example of how I've implemented it.
    public class Main implements CompanyListener {
/** Creates a new instance of Main */
        public Main() {
            CompanyListModel companyModel = new CompanyListModel();
            companyModel.addCompanyListener(this);
            CompanyListFrame gui = new CompanyListFrame(companyModel);
// A company was selected.  Open a new dialog and display the employees
        public void companySelected(CompanyModel companyModel) {
            Company company = companyModel.getCompany();
            EmployeeListModel employeeModel = new EmployeeListModel(company));
            EmployeeListDialog = new EmployeeListDialog(employeeModel);
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            new Main();
}My program is similiar design wise to the above, but contains many more classes. I'm still using my main class to control GUI logic (popping up new windows and creating models, etc). Thus, my main class implements like 5 different listeners. I'm sure this is a really poor design choice, I just don't know how else to implement it.
I should not nest models... correct? I was thinking about nesting the models, i.e. CompanyListModel contains an EmployeeListModel, but then the CompanyListModel will need to spawn the EmployeeListDialog when a Company is selected, right? Thus, I'd be mixing the view with the model.
Please provide some advice! :( Thanks!

I'm sorry, I read your reply about 3 times and I've
spent the last 20 minutes trying to implement it.
I'm just not sure how the controllers are involved.
Could you possibly provide source code for the
controllers (and any part of the models / views that
communicate with the controller)? No source code. Read about the MVC pattern.
I feel like this is a wasted effort. I'm the sole
entry level programmer at my company and I have only
one year real wold experience . I work with about 10
other senior level (microsoft) programmers and none
of them code in this fashion. All of our
applications are desktop applications using C#,
C/C++, or scripting languages. What's a wasted effort? You posting a question? Me posting a response? You writing Java? You trying to think about how to do this properly?
So why are you using Java if you're in a Microsoft shop? How's this working out with your co-workers?
I feel like if I worked on a project with one of
them, they would criticize me for using MVC and
"complicating" such a simple issue. That's usually because Microsoft likes tying a particular text box to a column in a table. If you change the textbox value you change the database. Nice and easy, right?
In trying to implement this solution, my workspace
now has a huge load of classes for something so
    simple:
    Company
    CompanyFrame
    CompanyListController
    CompanyListListener
    CompanyListModel
    CompanyListPanel
    Employee
    EmployeeListDialog
    EmployeeListModel
    EmployeeListPanel
    Main
11 classes and I left out the Emp Controller and
Listener to simplify the example. The more classes
that you have, the slower the application startup
time. Moving the Views to JPanels as you suggested
seemed smart but it wound up making it more
difficult. I'm using NetBeans and Matisse and I
don't believe you can use another JPanel class in the
GUI editor unless you make it a bean.
Traditionally, I would have implemented as follows.
I would have completed it in 5 minutes and it would
be much easier to understand what's going on:
    Company
CompanyFrame - contains a list of companies
    Employee
EmployeeListDialog - contains a list of employees
    Main
Of course doing it this way I'd be mixing data with
the view, but is that always a bad thing or is it
only bad for large scale applications? Should MVC
not be used for small modules like this? For small modules that are nothing more the CRUD operations, it might be that a simpler approach is fine. (PS - CRUD stands for Create/Read/Update/Delete, standard relational operations on tables. I'm not commenting on you or your code.)
It only becomes a problem when that "simple" CRUD application decides to branch into something bigger. The approach of mingling view and data can become problematic then.
It's still possible to have a clean application for small apps. I think most Microsoft programmers do it that way because the wizards and stuff they're used only allow it to be done that way.
The reasons why I'm going away from my old "academic"
    programming practices is:
    1) I want to become a better programmer of course!Kudos to you. At least you're still thinking about it.
    2) There's alot of database queries in this
application so I wanted to separate that from the GUI
as much as possible. Thus, each model knows how to
query the database and it's all done on separate
    threads.That's good motivation, too.
I'd really like to do this right. If you could
provide source that would be great. Also, are there
any good books on desktop GUI development geared
towards Java (or even C#)?I don't write for the desktop, so I'm not much help.
I already purchased the e-book Desktop Java Live,
which is great but they don't go into detail about
MVC and instead use Model-Presenter which has been
retired (according to Fowlers website). I found that
section fairly confusing so I figured I'd start with
MVC since it's more widespread (?).If you're reading Martin Fowler you're doing well.
Thank you.I'm sorry that I'm not more helpful.

  • Choppy movie clips and scenes

I am having a problem in which I have movie clips containing
tweens in a file containing two scenes. On publishing, the movie
clips in Scene A play fine, but the clips within Scene B are very
choppy -- they appear to be playing only the first and last frames
    of a tween.
The tweens themselves are definitely OK -- sometimes it
happens that the clips from Scene B play fine, but then the ones
    from Scene A don't work.
To see specifically what is happening, you can go to
    http://www.boston.com/news/specials/local/danvers_explosion/interactive_graphic/
The file is done in two scenes -- one for the content under
the "The Blast" tab and one for that under "Getting Out." The
pulsing arrows on the map in "The Blast" are movie clips with
motion tweens, and these are working correctly. Go to "Getting
Out," though, and the explosion symbol on that map is supposed to
expand and fade out, but as you can see, it's not working. But as I
said, sometimes that clip plays fine, but then the arrows (and
other clips in "The Blast") don't work.
This is not the first time I've run into this bug, so I don't
think it is anything project-specific. Anybody have any
    ideas?

dont think it is a "bug" because scenes dont exist in the
compiled SWF - they are only for managing
    your FLA timeline.
example: say you have 2 scenes 100 frames each. Upon export
to SWF, frame 1 in scene 2 is really
    frame 101.
perhaps you just need a preloader?
    can you provide the FLA?

  • Organizing Ipod and Itunes

Okay...I have an "old" Ipod classic...30 Gig. You know, the rectangle with a video screen?
Here is what I am not getting. I have my songs organized mostly how I want on Itunes. Here is where I am running into a problem. Lets take how I have my Beatles songs organized.
On Itunes I have a Playlist Folder titled "Complete Beatles"..Inside this folder I have put all my Beatles albums. In that folder, for instance, is Abbey Road, Sgt Peppers....etc.
On my Ipod however there is no Playlist folder titled Complete Beatles. All the albums are there, but they are spread all over the place alphabetically.
Does the Ipod itself not create playlist folders? The way it looks on Itunes is considerably different than on my Ipod.
I have the latest version of Itunes....if that makes any difference.

The older iPods (which are not, by the way, called Classics), don't support playlists folders. Oddly, neither does the Touch. The actual Classic (aka 6th Gen) and the 3rd and 4th gen Nanos do. Sorry.

  • Organizing photos and keeing them organized when backing up

Ok, I am kind of new to the iphoto thing, but I was wondering if there is a good way to keep the photos organized so they will stay organized when I back them up. I have created albums, but when I have to re-import the photos, they are not in any of the albums or organized. Is there not a way to have them saved in files (albums), so that when I back them up, they will remain in those folders?
    Thanks

    Wilson
To back up iPhoto, your Library, photos, comments keywords and so on, simply back up your home/Pictures/iPhoto Library folder. The when you restore it it will simply pick up from where yo left off. (This assumes that you have asked iPhoto to copy your originals into the Library folder, which is the default option.)

  • Comprehensive overview/question about organizing videos and movies

I've made a few movies here and there in the original iMovie, have made a fair amount of home movies using FCE. I have 20 years worth of videos scattered around on HI-8 formatting and some videos I downloaded from a hand held digital cheapo-movie cam. I'm to the point of trying to figure out the big picture on importing, structuring, storing, and sharing these files between iMovie, FCEHD 3.5.1, mobileme, my iPhone, etc.
I'm now wanting to start uploading movies to gallery.me.com. I started doing some of this before I got cancer last year. I'm basically restarting this whole process now that I'm beyond the rigors of chemotherapy and I'm trying to make a systematic approach to managing video files and already made movies. I have a lot of questions and would appreciate any insight you can offer in this discussion forum or if you recommend I copy this over to another discussion forum. I'm not sure to even begin hot to explain all this, so be patient as I try to start this process.
#1 - I've tried using iMovie 8 in the past. I ended up, somehow, with clips here, there, and who knows where. The original iMovie seemed rather straight forward and seemed to work in conjunction with iPhoto rather seamlessly. As iMovie made that big change some time back, I quickly backed out of using that program to manage clips as I couldn't find where they were stored and more importantly, they seemed to start disappearing after time. Is iMove 08 a good resource to manage clips or is it a bit of a dead end for people who are using various programs such as FCE and so forth? Seems the transparency of how the newer iMovie manages files is a bit not-so-transparent to me anymore and I simply am not finding many of the files in iMovie 08 that I can easily spot in iPhoto. Not sure what has happened there, but I can find the files in iPhoto and browse them, but NOT in iMovie 08. Help?
#2 - the only real reason I'm asking about iMovie at all is that I want to start uploading files from HI-8 tapes into my computer rather quickly and make simple basically unedited videos of what is on the Hi-8 tapes, then perhaps transport onto mobileme and/or make some DVD's. I did a few of those somehow before the cancer/chemo deal, but can't really recall the exact steps I took. Rough bout with cancer last year and my brain is a bit fried to be honest, not to mention all of this is a big hard to grasp deal for a RN who isn't trained in video stuff at this point in his life. Besides, I ended up having to reinstall my entire OS - long story. Bottom line, the few movies I do have on mobileme are in .m4v format. Not a big deal when using my mac at home, but notice that it causes iTunes to load onto my pc's at work or when visiting friends. Slow, clunky, and not sure how it wound up in that format. I'm thinking I did that somehow through iMovie or Quicktime 7 Pro. Before I go that route again, I need to ask about #3.
#3 - I just exported my first high definition video from FCE. I did so because we got our first new TV in 22 years, nice HD flat screen. I'm wanting to start understanding options for exporting videos onto mobileme. I got Quicktime Pro 7 and used the H264 or some option like that (file>share). It was able to take 1.5 gig high def video I did over my cancer journey and put it seamlessly onto mobileme. But it is in the .m4v video option which seems to cause some people and computers problems because of the whole proprietary iTunes angle. Is there a way around this being forced to use iTunes and simply share to mobileme gallery using .mov? I tried the file>export option, seems to want to use movie folder and I'm guessing that is another iTunes deal.
#4 - as I load files into my computer from HI-8 format and the newer cheap little HD dual SD card camera I got, those seem to either want to go into iMovie's folders (which I mentioned my confusion about above) or I can manually put them into a file structure that I'm slowly learning to build using FCE. I don't mind the FCE option and it seems logical. I still run into the problem of how to share web based content of the videos. Using iDVD is rather straightforward, but I'm wanting to use some kind of web centric approach to sharing my videos on the output and have one big file structure for organizing my files/videos on the input.
I notice that iMovie has many exporting/sharing options in its menu. Are they really any different/better/worse than what I have with quicktime Pro 7? Should I even try to utilize iMovie at all or simply go with the capture option on FCE? I at least can find the files and organize them with FCE.
I'm not sure how to further word this at the moment as I'm trying to better understand all this as I'm moving forward.
Any suggestions you might have at this point would be most beneficial. I'm sure as I get further into this, I'll start clarifying my own questions and thoughts.
Any resources you can point me to for newer (but not totally new) to video structure input/exporting on the mac?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert,
A lot of questions, perhaps to much to go into detail but,
I can second the views of AppleMan
Since iMovie 08 I finally am able to organize and categorize my clips in an easy way. Just recently I made a DvD for one of my grandchildren containing a selection of events from over the last to years. Really a joy (not only the kid ). This would have been a much larger job without that.
When I like to do real "sophisticated" movie editing I use FCE and pick up the clips from the eventsfolder from iMovie.
Of course if you are happy with FCE for organizing (I found that a bit hard), you always can use the File->export-> quicktime movie feature and use Quicktime for uploading to mobileme or use the File->export->Quicktime conversion function.
Also within iMovie you can use the: share ->export with Quicktime, and use that to export your movie in the format you prefer.

  • File organizing Mac and Xp

This could be a very simple question but I have not found my
answer anywhere. I have recently moved over to a Mac operating
system from Windows XP, and on my old XP machine my flles which I
kept in pertinant folders were organized alphabetically first and
not by extension. I have just started to use Dreamweaver on my Mac
Book Pro and find that all my files are first organizes by
extension then alphabetically and I was wondering if there was a
place I could tell Dreamweaver to organize only Alphabetically?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jim

Thanks Hi and welcome to the forums!
I would sync with the Windows PC as it is easier.
You may want to monitor the Blackberry's for MAC

  • Link and scene play problem

ok so i am not very good at flash. i have a site intro that
is not structured well, and i know it, but it looks good and i am
keeping it. i am trying to achieve something like this:
    http://www.waldenmed.com/
so far i have the beginning going good, and a link is setup.
now i put the "retracting" part in a seperate scene, and used the
    code:
    i tried doing gotoAndPlay(2,1); inside the on(release)
    function but it didnt work.
i just want it so that when a user clicks on the link the
whole thing gets retracted. both scenes look good, i just cant get
the first scene to play the second scene after the link has been
clicked. so i want it to play the second scene first, then go to
the link after it has been clicked.

Thanks Rich. I've checked all chapter markers, and yes, they have been created as you suggested.
I've decided to scrap this iDVD project, and begin another. I've done so by using the same FCE Quick time movie, and VOILA, this time all scene selection links are working.
    Confused? Me too.
    Thanks for the feedback.
