Organizing albums per year in my iPod

Friends,
I find that organizing albums per year is much more convenient than by alphabetical order.
And makes much more sense, to me.
Now this is no problem when you're in iTUnes, as you can visualize all your music both ways, per year, alphabetically (and many more, actually.
But when I'm listening through my iPod???
my iPod organizes albums alphabetically by default.
In order to have an artist's albums organizes by year, I see no way but adding the year in front of the title.
1961 - Bob Dylan
1962 - Freewheelin
1963 - The Times They Are a-Changin'
and so on.
Which works ok, but it's definitely ugly.
Let alone the fact that I cannot browse them alphabetically anymore and I find myself having an infinite lists of dates instead of a list of titles.
Is there a way to tell my iPod to organize my albums by year even if the *physical number* is not printed in the title?
(the way you do when you're in iTunes)
Hope I've been clear
Thanks a lot for any answer.
Beppe

I've been wanting to do that too.
I haven't tried this yet, but give it a whirl. Before the title of each album by an artist, put a letter in front. For instance, if you have ten albums under Dylan, put the letter "A" in front of the title of the earliest album, "B" in front of his second and so on.
Searching by album would not work, but I never do that anyway. I usually go to the artist first, then look for the album.

  • How do I view my albums by year on my iPod Touch

Hi, I would like my albums to be displayed in chronological order on my iPod.
It is very annoying seeing all your albums in alphabetical order for large discographies like The Beatles, Bob Dylan, or Van Morrison for example.
All my albums have "Year" tags recognised by iTunes so "Album by Year" works perfectly, but how do I do this on my iPod?
For example, my Beatles albums are displayed like this:
    Abbey Road
    A Hard Day's Night
    Beatles For Sale
    etc.
When infact, they should be like this:
    Please Please Me (released 1963)
    With The Beatles (released 1963)
    A Hard Day's Night (released 1964)
    etc.
I think Apple's software & products are quite innovative, so surely there must be a simple way to do this!
On another note - how do you just VIEW the year of an album on your iPod? I can't seem to find it!
    Many thanks
    Tom

    Tom -
You could probably do something like this by screwing around in iTunes a bit. I know in previous versions if you held the alt button and clicked the "create new playlist" button you would get a bunch of options for setting up dynamically generated playlists.
So, just an idea, you could set one up to organize by year...

  • Organizing albums by year on ios device

Is there a way to organize itunes match albums by year on an iOS device similar to what we have on iTunes?
I hate having the albums all over the place (OCD)

If you've downloaded the tracks to your iOS device you'll need to delete the tracks for the ID3 changes to take affect.
I haven't downloaded any music onto my iPhone as far as I'm concern, I don know they propably get downloaded as you play them, I will have to check on that.

As to displaying albums in "boxsets," I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Do you mean you want the Albums to be displayed in the same way in the Music app as they are in the iTunes Store? I don't think that is possible, honestly.
What I do (and this might be useful to you) is put the title of the boxset in the Album field. For example: Abbey Road (The Beatles in Stereo), or The Doors L.A. Woman (The Complete Studio Albums).
Or you can use the Sort Album field. I haven't this, but what you could do is put the title of the boxset in the Sort Album field and see if that does what you want it do. In short, play around with the ID3 tag fields in iTunes to get what you want. You won't hurt anything and if you don't like the results just delete the tag from the field and it goes back to like it was.
I've tried and it doesn't really do anything, I just thought they way they showed it on the iTunes store was going to be tha way they'll look in my library, no biggie.

  • Organizing with "Album by Year"

I've found the sorting method of "Album by Year" very useful in organizing my albums chronologically. However:
The Times They Are A-Changin' and Another side of Bob Dylan were both released in 1964. Although "Another side" was released second, it is listed above "Times" in alphabetical order.
Any tricks to move that album down a notch and keep my chronology going?

Not that I have found I am afraid.
The next level of sorting is album title, so the only way I can see is to put a character in front of the Album title to influence the sort order.
Putting a space character in front of "Times they are a changing" might force it to the top and is not too intrusive. Worth a go anyway. I am sure you know that you can use Get Info on multiple tracks so you can do the whole album in one go.

  • I had to restore my computer. After reinstalling itunes and sincronizing with my ipod, the music files were not organized in itunes as in the ipod: some songs were missing, some albums has no cover? Why is the sincronization not working properly?

  • Organizing Album by Artist/Year When Multiple Albums a Year

I'm so OCD I want to organize my albums chronologically by year, but if a band has multiple albums in one year, it organizes them alphabetically. Is there a way I can specify the actual date or at least month, so my albums will properly be in order?

    Tom,
When you click on the left side of the column head (on the title), it cycles between Album, Album by Artist, Album by Year.
When you click on the right side of the column head (over the arrow) it toggles between Ascending/Descending (Up/Down arrow).
    Multipass.

  • Display Albums in Chronological Order in iPod

    Hi,
I was wondering why albums appear in alphabetical order by deafault in iPod and there's no way to organize them by year to display them in chronological order.
Perhaps there is a way to do so and I haven't figured it out yet (besides adding the year to the album name, i.e. naming 'A Hard Day's Night' -> '1964 A Hard Day's Night')?
Is there another way to bypass or alter iPod's method of organizing album lists?
I know there have been several discussions on the subject already but I haven't found any solution yet and I'm sure others are looking for one as well.
    Thanks in advance,
    David

yeah well thanks for your dismissive reply
    but I don't agree -
when you initially browse by "Artist" on the iPod,
then 'drill down', you are presented with a list of that
    Artist's albums.
Maybe I'm an anal aspergerated mentalist, but on my shelves
at home, I generally have my CDs in alphabetical order
by artist, and then within that, in release order.
It's logical and what I'm used to seeing.
When I go into my Kraftwerk stash on the iPod,
I don't wanna see "AUTOBAHN" first in the list cos it begins
with "A", I wanna see Kraftwerk, Kraftwerk 2, Ralf und Florian, then Autobahn [substitute your own favourite artists here]
Moreover, never mind what I think, iTunes also thinks it's a useful way to display things,
since it already lets you do that - so why can't the iPod
do it too? it's all in the metadata...

  • Itunes now shows "album by year" - how do I get back to just "album" ??

my itunes library shows track name, artist, track #, time, year, and used to just show the album name. I know I can sort by clicking on either artist, album, etc. now, suddenly, instead of "album", it shows the heading "album by year" and I can't get it back to the other way. I've repeatedly checked "album" in view, and preferences, etc. there's not even a category choice of "album by year" but it won't go away !! any ideas on how I can get rid of this, and get back to just sorting by album name ??
I'm fairly new to itunes and ipod, so please forgive me if this is a really dumb (ignorant) question ! thanks for your help !!

Click on the word "Album" several times, until you see the option you want.

  • Want to organize library by "album", not "album by year"

I had my library organized by "album". I closed itunes, started back up, and now it appears as "album by year" (even though the right-click drop down menu lists it as just "album". I have tried closing itunes, restarting the computer, and downloading the latest itunes update. I can't seem to get back to the "album" tab. Ideas?

Click on the column header again.
It switches thru Album -> *Album by Artist* -> *Album by Year*.

  • Sorting Individual Artists by Album by Year

I have a question about how to define how iTunes should sort songs. Currently, I use GRID VIEW to sort songs by artist, giving me the following view:
    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o151/AndrewG17/Picture2-2.png
Then I have the next section organized with GRID VIEW as well, giving me the following view:
    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o151/AndrewG17/Picture1-2.png
My question is when in this view, how do I tell iTunes to organize every one of these grids, which is the entire works of a particular artist, by ALBUM BY YEAR in an ascending fashion. You will notice that the second picture is organized in this fashion already, but if I were to return to the grid of artists and click on the same artist again it would revert to the following view:
    http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o151/AndrewG17/Picture3-2.png
As you can see this is not the same view at all, and it is quite frustrating to CONSTANTLY have to tell iTunes to sort the artists by ALBUM BY YEAR. Is there someway I can have iTunes automatically define sorting in this way? Interesting enough not every artist will be sorted in the same fashion as this one (the third picture), indicating to me that there is some way to set the presets for sorting. However, in no case will the sorting technique that I indicate be "saved" for the next time I open that artist. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thank you for your time.

Use the "Option" key when clicking on a sort button in grid view to get additional options.

  • Burning MP3 CD by 'Album by Year'

I can burn an MP3 CD with folders for each album. However, the album/folder order is alphabetical. I tried burning by 'Album by Year' a new feature in iTunes 7 however it does not create the folders necessary for easy navigation on a car MP3 player.
    Any ideas?

    Hi
    All my tracks are MP3.
In List View, I do not have an Album column I have an Album by Artist column.  If I click on this column the albums look right in the playlist on the screen but when I burn to the CD the tracks are not in one folder per album instead they seem to be in folders per Artist then Album, which as one of the albums is a compilation has created about 30 folders.
If I switch on the 'Sort by Album' column it burns the disc as I expected.

  • Is there a way to sort artists album by year?

i wanna have some of my artists' albums sorted by year instead of alphabetically. is there a way to do this? thanx a bunch.

Albums sort alphabetically on the iPod. The only "solution" would be to preface an album's title with the year it released.

  • Archiving Mac Mail emails per year

    hello
is there an easy way ( read: automatic, by script ;-) to archive my Mac Mail emails per year ?
    thx in advance
    Henny

As I looked back at my test Smart Mailbox, you could use something like that to group them all and then move them into the new Year hierarchy which would sort of semi-automate the process.
Build your 2010 hierarchy and then create the 2010 smart mailbox for a particular folder in your archive. Select all in the smart mailbox and move to the new 2010 folder of same name. Edit the smart mailbox for each folder and repeat. Sounds a bit tedious, still, depending on how many subfolders you have and how many years you go back.
And more ideas. I created a 2010 Smart Mailbox that got all emails for 2010. I then typed in one of my Archive folder names in the Search box and selected Mailbox as the criteria type from the search dropdown. So, for instance, if I wanted to look at my online orders from 2010, I selected the 2010 smart mailbox, and then typed Online Orders into the search field. When the various matching criteria popped up, I selected Mailboxes.
This method would allow you to keep your Archive grouping neatly organized and not have the hierarchy duplicated each year. Smart Mailboxes can be grouped by dragging them on top of one another, so you could keep the Year mailboxes neetly organized, also.

  • HT201656 How many albums can an 16 gb ipod hold

I am thinking about buying a new ipod and would like to know how many hours of music will 16gb IPOD touch will hold

How much it will hold will depend upon the format of your music files (e.g. MP3, AAC etc) and the tracks bitrate. A lot of my music on my iPod I tend to have as MP3s at a bitrate of 128 kbps - so an album tends to be about 50 to 60 meg. At that size I get about 18 albums per gig, which would be something 250 albums on a 16 gig iPod Touch (some of the 16 gig is taken up by the operating system and built-in apps).
