Organizing by Keyword?

Will iPhoto let me assign unique keywords to a single photo without having to draw the keyword from a list of saved keywords? That would be pretty limiting. I'd much prefer to be able to assign keywords on-the-fly and then be able to locate the photo in the future with a robust search engine. If the keyword was automatically saved to the list that would be fine, but adding it ahead of time is dopey.

Sorry for waste of time. Figured it out. I just need to Edit the photo's title. Then I can search the title words. It seems I can also edit some comment words that then act as meta-data that can be searched, but mine is kinda buggy, working only some of the time to search comments.

  • Organizing parallel keywords

What is the best way to make parallel keywords in different languages? If I for example want to make keywords for a plant in my own language - Norwegian, plus English and Latin, to make it searchable for everyone when exporting to Flickr. Another situation is when I want to make several keywords that always have the same meaning and should be "linked together".
I love the fact that I can just enter the "innermost" keyword and then get all the others when searching and exporting. But the hierarchical system doesn't fit when using keywords in several languages because they all should be at the same level. I want to enter only one keyword and then get all the others at the same time. So what is the best way to do this?

No, I'm not aware of the exact same synonym functionality.
You could group words from multiple languages together in the hierarchy, but it's not so clean.

  • Feature request: better keyword management tool

I'm re-organizing my keywords and I think that LR needs some work in keyword management and DAM features.
I miss something like separate keyword management tool which would have two keyword lists, which would work a bit like spatial file management in Os X finder.
Easily manage keyword hierarchy. For example: browse list and and be able to easily select keywords (now it's OK) and drag and drop them to under a new keyword (almost ok, but sometimes cumbersome, if one wants to move keyword which is/are at the bottom of the long keyword list to keyword which is at the top of the list).

Dang near impossible once you have a lot of keywords. A work-around for me has been to filter keywords first to reduce the number of keywords in the list, then do the drag 'n drop. At a minimum, a change to scroll the list when you're searching for a drop target at a variable rate that depends on mouse position, or even something simple like slowing it down when the alt key is pressed.
+1 vote - better keyword management.

  • Can't drag keywords to top level in the keyword HUD

After having imported my iPhoto library into Aperture 3, I found the keyword HUD cluttered with all of my 300+ keywords, many of which were duplicated. No idea why that is, but anyway. Some of them now live on top level, some on second floor under the main keyword "iPhoto", some of them are duplicates, some are not. That's the situation.
So I want to (a) drag some of them to first level, (b) build my own hierarchy, and (c) consolidate those duplicates that are alloted on separate levels. Now I find myself in trouble. Technically, I can drag any second level keyword from one to another first level keyword, but then they remain always on second floor. I find no way to move it to *first level* in the HUD.
I know that this can be done when the keyword HUD is almost empty. In that case, I drag it to the bottom of the list, see a white border pop up around the HUD, and let go. Simple. But not when the HUDs filled up to the brim?
    Am I missing something?

OK ... but you're gonna groan. This is, btw, a long-standing bug (but still an excellent question).
Use the search field to search for the keyword you want to move.
Take advantage of the now empty space in the Keyword HUD to move the keyword.
    Clear the search field.
Note that if you set up a well-organized hierarchical keyword list (which seems to be your goal), you can use the other work-around, which is to collapse all levels of the outline.
You might find these remarks on merging duplicates helpful:

  • Keywords to multiple images from keyboard?

I was wondering how the other denizens of this dusty corner handled the sitation that I am facing.
I have many photos to organize- thousands, in fact. It's not that difficult of a job, though, since many are similar and they are well-grouped when sorted by date.
I've organized my keywords pretty well. The first pass at organization will entail about 9 keywords, so option–# works. However, as everyone knows, Aperture will not allow the keyboard shortcut option-# to apply keywords to more than one image at a time, forcing the user instead to use Batch Change. This seems so clunky that it simply cannot be right.
Is it? How can I apply new keywords to a selection using the keyboard?

That is in chapter seven (my numbering, based on the sidebar).  Familiarizing yourself with the first seven chapters of the User Manaul is strongly recommended if you intend to use Aperture.
Searching the always-useful User Manaul Glossary under "P" we find:

The most important image in an image selection. Adjustments are applied only to the primary selection in an image selection. The primary selection is identified by a thicker white border. There can be only one primary selection in an image selection. See also adjustment, image selection, Primary setting.

  • Organizing in LR 3

Over the years I have used LR and then drifted back to iPhoto and PSE, but now want to commit to LR 3.  I am combining several family members photos in one place.
My stuff:  iMac 21.5 (3.06 Gh, ATI graphics), 4G mem., 1TB, backed up to 500G HD and Mozy. OS X 10.6.4;  iPhoto 9, PSE 8 and LR ;.  6,000+ images in iPhoto;  almost 25G of CR2 transferred from a son's HD for inclusion in family history.   Can add additional HDs as necessary.
Question:After I move the iPhoto "originals" to desktop and import into LR can I place the originals on Mac HD/Decade/year/title ......
and also keep them in the Home/pictures/collection/sub/sub/sub ????  Would like to tag appropriately but keep "Picures" folder as an outline of activities rather than just years.
If this is somehow symbolic of some form of ignorance, I'm guilty .
But, will really appreciate advice ..
    Ed

dj .. I'm sorry I didn't make the "intent" clear.  I only have and want ONE set of "Originals."  It has always been my understanding that LR does non-destructive editing whereas PS or PSE (I Use) alter the image permanently.   I thought that as I moved out of iPhoto and gathered up the  images transferred from my son's HD I should consider them for all practical purposes as "originals" and place them directly on the HD: iMac/HD/MY PHOTOS rather than in Home/Pictures and use that as the developed copies.
I strongly recommend you stop using folders as an organizing tool. Keep whatever structure your folders have right now, and move them to whatever disk you want them on, but put no more effort into adjusting your folder names and folder locations a way to find your photos. This is what keywords are for, and they are much more powerful because a photo can have 12 billion keywords but a photo can be in only a single folder. If you want to commit to LR3, then you should also commit to organizing using keywords and metadata inside of Lightroom, and not use old-fashioned tools (folders) that weren't meant to organize photos. New photos, captured from now on, can go into default folders by capture date.
Again, I thought LR used "collections" and by default saved its 'copies' to the "Pictures" folder; therefore I could name them, tag them and save them as developed images that, in effect, are kept with the pointer to the originals up on the HD. (And yep, I know it is ALL on the HD, in my case)..
As for additional work, I guess I thought I would, in the future, bring the images into LR from the card, cull, and save the originals to MY PHOTO Folder at iMac HD > Photos> year ...  and then, after working with those with hope, I would save the "Final" image to the Home>Pictures>"major topic">"sub-topic">"sub-topic".
Not being a professional with the attendant large numbers of images/shoot  (rarely more than a hundred) nor the talent and skills, I have and do enjoy the challenge of producing a few really pretty good pics ;-.  The family "chore" is something that just got added and I will clean them up and upgrade a few of each situation .. where would you save those to??
If you are real busy - please, I don't want to impose, but really appreciate the help.  Other than a son in SF who is head of Motion Arts (Stacks of 12 core Macs) for a large advertising agency I have no other Mac users and only the one LR Windows techie .. he has some 30,000 images and sets up very differently for a very different purpose..  if I use only tags I would need an index to the tags.

  • Top-level keyword problem

I have just two hierarchical levels in my keyword list - for example "animal species", which contains lion, tiger, bear, etc. "Bird species", which includes pelican, flamingo, etc.
The top level words are set not to export, and if I export a dng as tiff, of course they don't carry through to the tiff.
My problem is I'm re-doing all my keywords, assigning them to the raw, then using exiftools to copy them to the tiff (could just as well be vice-versa, doesn't make any difference). In this case there is no exporting. The tiff were long ago exported and have been finalized. I'm not re-exporting them from raw. The new keywords are just being written into the xmp for both tifand dng. Since the files have not been exported per se, the top-level keywords do show up if I browse the files in other programs that read iptc.
Any thoughts? I don't want any of these top level keywords to carry through when other programs that read iptc handle the files. They do not show up in the "Keyword Tags" field under the "Keywording" section header, or I would just do a select all and delete them from there. I don't want to remove them from my keyword list though, as I like the help they provide in organizing the keywords.

The same problem from 2007 - no answer then

  • Keyword problem - assigned kw from earlier versions won't work in 1.3

All of my images are organized by keywords and I've just noticed that most of the keywords assigned in earlier versions of LR are not working. The keyword palette is there, it says there's x amount of photos with each keyword, a thumbnail displays in the navigator window but nothing shows up in the main Library view. I get the message "no photos match this filter".
Any ideas? I really don't want to have to go through and re-keyword everything.
I have tried optimizing the db, and also selected all photos and hit Ctrl-S to write metadata and still no go.

Now I feel like an idiot. I had a filter on. Thanks Kenneth.

  • Importing keywords...

Sorry, posted in wrong category, should be here:
Well I just discovered something annoying...
I imported about half of my existing library to try out LR. Along with the import, LR added all the keywords that were already associated with the files being imported. Great!
So I decided to take the time to organize my large number of keywords buy putting them in a hierarchal "parent/child" structure and condensing them using the "synonyms" box where applicable. It took a long time, but I did it!
Then, I decided, ok, lets import the other half of the library now and guess what... it imported all the keywords again. The only problem, it didn't recognize that most of the keywords were already there!
So, if I created a structure like:
    USA->California->San Francisco
    from what used to be:
    USA
    California
    San Francisco
I now have the following in my keyword list after importing more images:
    USA->California->San Francisco
    USA
    California
    San Francisco
Which means I have to go back and reorganize my entire keyword list again... with the added PITA of moving files that have the keywords:
    USA
    California
    San Francisco
    to:
    USA->California->San Francisco
    before deleting the duplicate entries.
LR should be smart enough to know that a keyword is already in the keyword list, even if it is as a child or a synonym. At the least there should be two checkbox options for importing:
    - Import keywords already in database as synonym
    - Import keywords already in database as child
Otherwise this will be a continuing problem any time we import files that already have keywords associated with them.
    Jeff

I've found yet another occurrence of this happening. Lets say I spend hours and hours organizing my keywords as I describe above. And then spent even more time re-organizing because LR re-imported a lot of those keyords with an image that was imported into LR. Well, finally I've got all my synonyms set up, I've got keywords in their correct hierarchies, etc, etc. And now I'm not goin gto be dumb enough to re-import images outside the library into LR only to have my keywords messed up all over again!!! That would be insane!
So, I go about key-wording some of my images inside LR. These images have a lot to describe, so there are quite a few keywords being added to the images. I then export the images using LR. All the exported images now have all the expanded keywords that they should.
But I exported the key-worded images into a directory that will be synced back into the LR library. Guess what... all those keywords that I took time to organize, that are in the images I'm now importing into LR... they are all back into their flat structure even though they are already well organized in the keyword list somewhere else. And, you guessed it... now I have to go back through and get rid of all those newly imported keywords that were already in the library. FOR THE THIRD TIME.
Please do something about this. Oh and additional way this could have been avoided... since I was doing the keywording in LR and I did the exporting in LR, and I exported into a directory that was already in the LR library... LR should have known this image and I shouldn't have had to re-import it which would mean the keywords would never have been re-imported, which would mean I'm not going to spend yet another hour of my life fixing my keywords. Or... just ad an "import/don't import keywords option."

  • Howto Import iPhoto *with keywords* into LightRoom

I have spent a significant amount of time organizing by keywords in iPhoto. I would like to completely migrate over to LightRoom, but I cannot seem to find how I can import an iPhoto Library's keywords along with the originals.
Anyone have suggestions? Is this a LightRoom 1.1 capability?

  • Anyone having keyword search problems?

I'm using most recent vers. of Aperture and OS X.
I'm getting different search results from 1) the Aperture keyword drop-down list (3000+ returned) and 2) the IPTC keyword field (100+ returned), even though I'm using the identical keyword: facades.
The discrepancy between the two search is roughly the same with all stacks open and all stacks closed (obviously fewer returned when stacks are closed).
Unfortunately, many of those returned using the drop-down list don't have the keyword "facades" in their keyword field!!
Very puzzled. Are keywords treated differently in these two fields? But why would files be returned that don't have the keyword?
I have (several times) carefully checked to see that only "facades" is checked in drop-down list.
The drop-down list is: "include all of the following."
The top line says: "include all of the following that match."

May be that You have organized your keyword in a gerarchical mode, in such a way aperture give the response using the proper keyword and also the keyword that is superior in gerarchy.
For instance if You have set keywords grouping together some keywords of animal, i.e. cat, dog, bird, and so on sub a title: "animal", then when you search the keyword "animal", You'll find all the photo that have the keyword underlying, i.e. cat, dog, bird and so on.

  • Keyword Organization

Hi I run LR on my desktop and laptop. I have a catalog stored on an external hard drive so I can access it from both machines. I recently organized my keywords (similiar to a directory with tiered entries)on my laptop. When I accessed the catalog from the desktop machine all the keyword organization was gone. I assumed that the keyword data was associated with a catalog and not the program however it doesn't appear that way. If the keyword data does not run with the catalog is there a simple way to sync that data on both machines? I am running 1.3.1

You can export your keyword hierarchy from one machine and import it to the other. RTFM for the settings you may want to use -- i.e. "export as LR hierarchy."

  • V1.1 changed keyword import behavior???

I searched the FAQ and forum but couldn't find this question posed or answered anywhere. Is it just me or did 1.1 change the way keywords are imported into the existing hierarchy? My scenario: I have thousands of photos flat keyworded in another program that I've been importing into Lightroom since it came out, and organizing the keyword hieracrhy as I go.
In v1.0 - Lightroom automatically filed the keywords that already existed in the catalog for imported photos into the current hierarchy. So, if I had [Animals > Birds > Sparrows] in the catalog and imported a photo with the keyword [Sparrows] it would automatically add it to [Animals > Birds > Sparrows].
In v1.1 - Lightroom now ignores my existing keyword heirarchy on import and creates duplicate keywords even when imported keywords already exist. ARG! This results in [Animals > Birds > Sparrows] and [Sparrows] which is such a pain.
Anyone else notice this? Am I overlooking a simple setting? Is there anyway to get the v1.0 behavior back? Thanks!

That would be nice. To be honest, I love the basic keywording design - I love typing / autofill / selecting my keywords and its way faster for me than scrolling and selecting or even checking little boxes or dragging and dropping. Big improvement could still be made in automating things so that it wasn't still so tedious, for example:
    1) allow for assigning independent keyword sets to independent folders (or some other grouping) on IMPORT. i always import by date so every photo goes into a [folder] Year > [Subfolder] Month > [Subfolder] Day. I never keyword on import because my subjects are all over the place and no generic set matches the whole Import. But if I could specify separate sets for each import folder - now that would be useful.
    2) i know this is way out there, but what if it used facial recognition algorithms to automatically keyword people names from a configured set of labelled photos... or even if it could learn over time what colors / subjects / patterns / objects get labeled and start auto-keywording.
This is turning into a feature request thread :) I'm still annoyed that the one excellent piece of automation (auto merge on existing keywords at import) is now broken in 1.1.

  • Loops in arrays or structures

    Loops in arrays or structures
I was given a project on html reports and
They have advised me to use Loops in arrays or structures
At this point I am a novice at this html reporting system. I
would like to know how I can use loops in arrays or structures.
    How is it beneficial are
    1. Structures
    2. Arrays
    3. loops in for both
    for my reports.
    Countless thanks in advance

Structures are great if you understand them, they are
basically just arrays organized by keywords rather than index
    numbers.
Arrays are very nice, as you can just run through loops to
access each element, as they are all indexed by numbers 0-x.
loops are great to navigate through both. All you have to do
is set an loop to run through x amount of iterations of the array
or structure (where x is the length of the array, or number of
elements in the structure). Loops are great due to the small amount
    of code they require.

  • FCPX hangs on loading event in boot up, but when it does boot it runs very slowly.

    I'm having a problem with FCP 10.0.9
When I try to open the program it gets hung up on the opening logo at loading event. I get a message that FCP is not responding in the force quit menu,  but after around 6 hours FCPX opens up, but runs very slowly. I can see all of my projects and everything appears to be intact.
I'd like for FCPX to run smoothly again so I am looking for advice on how to fix it.
    Here is some pertinent information.
    I'm working on an 2.93 GHz intel core 7 iMac / 16GB memory / ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB / OS 10.7.5
Everything is on an external 12tb Raid drive that has 5.7 TB free and is connected via Firewire 800.
The footage has been going into FCP is Arri Alexa footage that has been transcoded using Devinci resolve and proxies were created for all the footage within fcp.
My event folder is around 600 gb and the transcoded footage that has been imported into FCP is around 6TB
I've been working for about 3 weeks and have everything broken into 4 projects within one event and everything was working smoothly until yesterday.
I have no compound clips, but all of my imported footage has been synced, multicam-ed and organized by keyword collections.
I've tried loading the even backup to no avail (and foolishly I did not have backups stored anywhere else)
    I've tried trashing preferences.
    I've tried reinstalling the program.
I've tried hiding events and projects with Event Manager X.
I've tried running diagnostics using the digital rebellion pro maintenance tools Corrupt Clip Finder, Project repair, and Quick Fix but everything came back clean.
One person at Apple technical support suggested I move the footage out of my event folder In pieces to see if there was a corrupt clip. First I removed the proxies and then the original media and then everything else (including all render data) until the only thing in the even folder was the event itself, but still FCP hung up on boot up.
Another apple technical support person suggested I should have optimized my media (which I did not do) but after getting FCP to boot up I let it optimize all my media overnight and this has not had any significant effect.
My console displays lots of error messages end with "Too many SQL Variables"
Another error message I am getting in console is:
Class CMIOGraphService is implemented in both /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreMediaIO.framework/Versions/A/CoreMediaIO and /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/Frameworks/CoreMediaLion/CoreMediaIO.framework/Versions/Curren t/CoreMediaIO. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.
When I hide the event but keep the projects in their proper place FCP boots up quickly and my projects are all there but none of the footage appears since it is all within my event.
One thing I am reluctant to try but may end up doing if I cannot find the correct answer from this internet community is Export and XML and use Xto7 to try to open it up in FCP7 and finish the project there. This feels like something that is going to cause me problems down the road, but I'm unsure.
As is almost always the case, I'm under an impossibly tight deadline so any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Brody

Quite the same problem here: FCP X (10.0.9) crashed while quitting, now it's always hanging up (opening logo freezes while displaying "loading .... event"). The Console says: "SQLite error code:1, 'too many SQL variables'".
The difference maybe is that my event isn't that big. 350 GB, including the original and transcoded media. The fcpevent file itself is about 340 MB. Unfortunately (my fault!) I didn't backup any of the .fcpevent files.
Is there any possibility to repair the .fcpevent file? I tested the repair tool by digital rebellion, but still no success. Are there any other ideas?
    Thanks!
