Organizing email- confused!

Just made the switch from Entourage to Mail and have a simple question which I have not been able to find out clearly from Mail Help:
What's the difference between a Mailbox, Folder, Smart Mailbox, and Smart Mailbox Folder?

mailbox - the root of your mail on the server
folder - a place where you are storing messages (inbox, sent, important stuff, etc.)
Smart mailbox - Specific to just mail. reorganizes your mail in a way that doesn't destruct its folder structure on your mail server
and
smart mailbox folder - holds a collection of smart mailboxes.

  • IMAP Gmail & Apple Mail: Organizing Emails

I’ve just switched from POP to IMAP on Mail.app in an effort to synch my iPhone and my Mail.app. I followed the step-by-step instructions on Gmail’s support page. I’ve got a few questions . . .
    1) What’s the best way to organize the thousands of emails archived in the new All Mail Folder? I’d like to create basic folders (i.e. Work, Family, School) to sort my emails.
    2) Can I use the Apple’s “Sent” Folder (the one with the paper plane icon) to view all of my sent emaisl? Or will my history of sent emails forever be stored in the Gmail “Sent” subfolder?
    Thanks.

Sorry, I just noticed something. The problem is not only with the mail that comes in from the Fetch accounts. It also happens with mail sent to Gmail.
In the left-hand column of Mail 3.0, there's a folder called "Gmail" with a triangle next to it. Let's say a new mail comes into my inbox to my Gmail address. If I click on it in the inbox, it gets marked as unread in the inbox. However, I still see a "1" next to the Gmail folder indicating there's an unread message. If I click on the triangle to expand the folder, and then click on "All Mail", the folder seems to "update" itself and the unread email is marked as read (without me clicking on the actual message).
Otherwise, it seems to stay marked unread. Why is this?

  • Organizing emails from different accounts - use "on my mac" folder?

Hello - I now have 5 email accounts - IMAP and POP - pulling into my Mail 3.6. I would like to be able to file emails from these accounts in common folders that will never get deleted from my mac.
For example, I would like to be able to save emails from multiple accounts into a "personal" or "work" folder that I can access forever. I think that making folders within the "On My Mac" section effectively removes them from the mail accounts and stores them on my machine. But I can't find any literature about this.
So is this the best way?
Does it matter if they are Pop or IMAP accounts?
Will they be deleted if the email account ever gets deleted?
    Many thanks -

When you create a New Mailbox, On My Mac, it is on your hard drive, and not on any server. You always then have the choice to either Move or Copy messages -- the latter leaves a copy in the original mailbox (account Inbox, for example).
On My Mac mailboxes do not get removed when any account is deleted. On My Mac mailboxes are neither POP or IMAP, as only actual email accounts and their standard mailboxes or in the case of folders on the IMAP server are associated with an account.

  • Organizing Email from Different Accounts

I have two different email accounts in Mail. I want them each to go into their own mailboxes, and they do but they also appear in the main "Inbox." Is there a way that I can keep my main account mail going to the Inbox, but my secondary account mail going ONLY to its own mailbox and not being included in the main one?
I have tried setting up a rule telling Mail to send mail from this account into a mailbox that was created for it, but I can't seem to make it work.
    Help please!
    Cris

Another option you may have already tried but don't prefer is keeping Inbox open in the mailboxes drawer revealing each account named Inbox mailbox.
Selecting an account named Inbox in the mailboxes drawer reveals messages received by the account only in the message list.
I've been using the Mail.app exclusively (with multiple accounts) since Jaguar was introduced thru Panther and now Tiger and this is what I've always done but obviously not the chosen method or preference for all.

  • Organizing Email in Folders

Page 47 of the iPad Users Guide says you can move a message to a different mailbox or folder. How do you create folders to store mail messages? I have 3 mailboxes: Inbox, Sent, Trash. I would like to create a folder into which I can move all my messages from Aunt Susie so as to un-clutter my Inbox.

You have to have an IMAP mail account, you create the folders on your computer then sync them to your iPad.

  • Auto-Setup Emails Fail with kGotAuthenticationFailure

If I set up my people with a shortname of "first.last", the auto-setup email fails to work when they click the setup button with "kGotAuthenticationFailure."
I do the dot in the shortname to facilitate more organized email addresses. I could do this by adding an alias, but I've found this confuses users as some services (like the wiki) only accept the true shortname.
I would really like for the auto-setup emails to work. Any suggestions for a fix?

Are the client Macs all created from a central image? If so, yes, it's a Kerberos key failure. The local KDCs need to be flushed from the image or from each Mac before you do your bind. Also good idea to discard the system keychain while you're at it.
Here's a simple sh script to do it.
    #!/bin/sh
    \# Delete System Keychain
    rm -rf /Library/Keychains/System.keychain
\# Delete the local KDC database
    rm -rf /var/db/krb5kdc
    \# Regenerate the local KDC
    /usr/libexec/configureLocalKDC

  • How do you create folders in my email account using a pop server. If not possible is there an app that makes it possible or does the new iOS5 make it possible?

Organizing emails with a POP server

    Russell D wrote:
This is very disappointing, and i find it hard to believe that Apple would do this intentionally. It worked on previous versions of email application. Apple please don't dishonor the image of Steve Jobs this way. Fix this right away. I can't think of anything more basic than being able to organize the email that you download into folders. This absolutely ***** ... What a stinker.....
I can't think of anything more idiotic than invoking the memory of Jobs here. Are you truly unaware that the iPad and iOS is pretty much exactly the way he wanted it to be, just like about everything else Apple?
As to your claim of "previous email applications", certainly none in iOS ever did that, and the only folders you can create and manipulate in POP accounts are those local to only that single machine or platform, not particularly helpful or desirable in today's environments.

  • Do BT email accounts exist after you leave?

    Hi,
So basically i am tied down to a rather gash BT service in my area when better and cheaper options are availble. I currently have a BtYahoo/BtOpenWorld/BtInternet Email - confusing is realy puting it in a nice way!
I want to leave but i don't know wether my email will be closed aswell if i leave as the contract is ending soon, if i do decide to leave surely the email should remain open as it's web based with BT Yahoo anyway?
This email is important and i cannot be hassle of changing email, especially with the huge ammounts of contacts and daily emails ..

    See this link http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/c/346,401,412,413/a_id/13140
What happens to my @btinternet email account when I stop having BT Broadband?
When you stop your BT Broadband service your email account is downgraded to a Pay-as-you-go or Basic email service. You'll be able to access your email account for up to 90 days from the date your BT Broadband service stops.
You won't be charged for the email account, but to continue to use it after 90 days you'll need to upgrade it to a Premium Mail account.

  • Importing MDaemon email into OSX Leopard Server

I currently use MDaemon email server software on a Win2K server computer to manage my company email. Can Email Services on OSX Leopard import all my old emails from MDaemon? I really want to make the change and dump Win2K forever....but I can't throw away 8 years of carefully organized emails and their subfolders. Is this a problem? Thanks in advance.

Just looking to move about 4 years worth of archived emails for about 12 email accounts. I'm hoping I can merge all our old emails into Leopard Email Service. They are ".msg" files.

  • How do you create new maps in Mail on iPad?

How do you create new maps in Mail on iPad?
In the iPad-manual they mention you can put messages in other mailboxes or maps (to free up the Inbox).
But they don't mention how to create such maps.
In the app itself I can't find a way to do it.
    thanks for all replies
    Kamiel

Maybe you are confused by the fact I used the word 'maps' instead of 'folders' (my natural Ianguage is Dutch).
For your question about the manual: on page 59 in the 'iPad 2 user guide' under 'organizing Email' they say you can move messages to a different mailbox or folder.

  • Adobe - you're starting to p**s me on!

My company is paying 250$ a month for your software and services. But it seems to me like we're just having problems.
The commands of your software packages are apsolutly irregular one to an other. For ex.: why is "cmd + F" in Illustrator "place on same location", the same command for Photoshop is something absolutely different. Youre software is full of different commands... WHY?!
Your Website is hell itself. I've written a long feedback and try to send it over the forum page - have to login - written message is lost. ARRRR! The same thing with your support-chat. Ducends of page-error-messages. In general the Adobe website is extremly unclear organized and confusing.
Why does Illustrator still snap to some grid, although I've disactivated "snap to grid" an everithing else that could be responsible for that snap function. Its driving me crazy! Sometimes working in Illustrator feels to me like trying to hammer a nail with a rubber. If there would be a good alternative we'd go after it.
I could write a whole book, but  don't have the time. Just wanted to let you know, that we are unhappy with a lot of points of Adobe's service.
    Thanks
    Florian Vecsey

I hear you. I'll just try to address one question you have, since I recently struggled with it:
"Why does Illustrator still snap to some grid, although I've disactivated "snap to grid" an everithing else that could be responsible for that snap function. Its driving me crazy! Sometimes working in Illustrator feels to me like trying to hammer a nail with a rubber. If there would be a good alternative we'd go after it."
Try going to the "transform" panel, flyout menu "Show Options" and UNclick "Align to pixel grid". This may fix your problem. This is a preference that is set depending on the template you choose when creating a new document. It may have been set without your knowledge.

  • Inbox memory full when using mail boxes

I have been organizing email in my mail boxes. My email service has now told me that I am maxed out on my email storage space. My email service is reading my mailbox emails as emails that are still in my inbox. I want these emails to be separate from my inbox so this won't happen. Does anyone know what I can do about this?
    Power Mac G5. Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Never mind. I realized that the memory was full because I have been "leaving messages on the server." I went in a deleted all of those and I am ok now.
