Organizing files in Finder window

I try to Clean up my photos in Finder window, and when i go to View --> Clean up by date created, it organizes them starting first with the newest ones. And I'd like to organize photos starting with the older ones first. Could you, please, help me on that. I've tried everything. Thanks you.

I sense that more information is required.
What is the source of these pictures, items imported from the internet, a camera, another computer?
Where do they currently reside?  In a folder(s) or in iPhoto?
Is the date part of the title of the picture, or the date that you imported them in your MBP?
Ciao.
Addendum for eww;  If you click on date modified twice, it inverts the dates, hence my suggestion.

  • The files in finder windows all have the same icon

Hi, the files in finder windows all have the same icons. Sometimes the icon will change when I drop a new file in a window. But I have no control over that. Any cue?
    Thanks

I also rebuilt the Launch Services Database. It worked for the icons already in folders (and finder windows), but when I put a file from the desktop in one of these folders, the file does not have the correct icon.

  • Moving / organizing objects in finder window

    Hey everyone -
I'm having problems trying to organize my finder windows. I like to manually move around my files, folders, and applications, but when i drop them into their new location in the finder they overlap ontop of whatever is there instead of pushing it aside. Is there a way to insert it inbetween whatever is there instead of droping it ontop? its really annoying!
    thanks in advance

    Hello stilarose:
If you have "lots" of things on the desktop, they will begin to drop on top of other icons. If this is not your case, then:
You should be able to get the look you wish by clicking on "view" when you are in the finder and selecting your arrange option. If that gives you problems, trash the finder preference file (com.apple.finder.plist), restart, and try the view option again.

  • Sorting files in Finder Window A-Z instead of Z-A

My issue arises when I access Finder through an app (for example, when I'm adding a file to my iTunes library). The files in the Finder window are being sorted Z-A instead of A-Z. I think I might have accidentally hit a shortcut to sort Z-A, and I can't figure out how to toggle it back. It's a small thing, but it's driving me crazy. I've tried switching between all the different viewing options, and that doesn't work. Anyone know what to do here?

    Good Morning V.A.L.I.S.
Thanks for the question.  I'll include some information about the Finder application below.  What I usually do is select a folder like Documents or Music and change the view to List view.  At the top of each column is a grey "header."  The first one you should see is Name.  Click on Name and your files will be sorted in order by the file name.  A ^ symbol beside the column heading indicates the files are in ascending ( A - Z ) order.  Click on the word Name again, and the sorting will toggle to descending order (Z - A).  Does that make sense?

    List View
Choose View > as List to see the items in a consecutive order. You can change the sort order of the list by clicking the headers (Name, Documents, Kind, Date) at the top of the list view. Click the same header a second time to switch between ascending and descending order.
If an item is within a folder, you can click the triangle next to the folder name to see any items stored within that folder.
    Have a great day!

  • Show Folders before Files in FInder window?

One thing I miss from Windows Explorer is that folders precede files in the tree structure. Is there any way to customize Finder to show my structure the same way?
    Powerbook G4 1Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Thanks for the help...except...
I only see that option when no other Finder windows are open - when I select the View|Show Options they pertain to the Desktop only. When I select View|Show Options from an open Finder window the options are only Text Size, Show icons, and Show preview column. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Can you tell?

  • IMac display issues: black icons and folders, doubled up files in finder windows, programs won't update

    HELP!
I'm hoping someone can help with my iMac 27" purchased in 2010.  From a previous discussion I started a year ago, I have had virtually nothing but trouble with it.  After the internal hard drive crashing, I was able to install OS X on an external drive and used it for a good 8 months to drive my iMac and I took it to an expert who has replaced it with a 3tb HDD, but at some point the display has gone crazy.  I am not certain if it is hardware, i.e. graphics card or video but I'll describe the symptoms and add some pics to see if anyone has seen this before and knows what the problem may be.
    1.     90% of the screen was covered with white with just a portion of the desktop showing through.
(This happened when I tried to reinstall OS X on the old HDD and the new one, but didn't happen when using OS X install disc)
    2.     Files, folders, photos and some icons on the dock go black
    3.     Files and photos double up when in Finder.  When I'm viewing photos, it shows them but all the previous panes and the photos are jumbled behind the
            photos.
    4.     Anything I open in Preview is completely black, but ColourSync Utility opens everything fine.
    5.     Programs won't update.  They will download onto my iMac but won't update.  Some say, because I don't have OS X 10.6.8 others just won't open.
Including Google Chrome, opens with two tabs open but when I open a third tab the rainbow wheel just turns.  Skype won't open just gives a failure
            report.
    6.     10.6.8 Update Combo downloads but when I restart the screen is covered in white - as in 1. and I have to reinstall OS X 10.6.2 to get the screen to               clear but then all the above problems continue.
    7.     Sometimes videos don't display in Youtube, or the entire page other than the video player is covered in rainbow lines.
    8.     Some buttons are blacked out on selection pages, i.e. system preferences, or saving screens
    9.     Photos opened in FB go upside down and flicker all over the page as my mouse runs over them.
    10.   Photos won't upload into internet editing programs.
I can't find anyone who has had the same issue in all of the discussions I've looked at, but it sounds like I have a video problem, but I wondered if it might be a software problem with flash or something.  Or I have something malicious on my computer.
I also have an iphone 5 that faulted with the iTunes and USB icons and won't fix after trying one of those R-Sims, and I wondered if somewhere along the line it may have even had a virus/trojan/malware that has infected my external drive and then my internal drive.  A reason I have thought that is because I have used my daughter's MacPro laptop and plugged in my external drive and I noticed the windows in hers were starting to do the same thing.
And on top of all that, my fans didn't work for over a year and I had to place an external fan at the back of the computer or it would overheat and shut down, but after resetting the SMU it started working again, but it is very noisy. I have tried to download SMC Fan Control and although it downloads to the HDD, it won't open.
Sorry its such a long post, I do hope with all of this information someone can help me.
    Thanks so much.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
*Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

  • .dmg files and Finder windows : preset window size

Sorry for this misplaced question, but I want to create a .dmg disk image similar to those that developers employ to deliver their applications. I know how to embed a custom window background image, but I don't know how to make the window open to a specific size when the .dmg file is opened.

MacKeeper is an exception to the rule that system modifications should be uninstalled according to the developer's instructions. Although not generally recognized as such, MacKeeper is in fact a trojan, because the developer distributes an uninstaller that purports to delete it, but leaves behind something that causes popup ads to appear in the user’s web browser. Try following the instructions here:

I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of those instructions, but others seem to have had success with them.

  • Can't move files in finder windows (!)

When I drag a file, such as an image, from a folder to the desktop, (or to another folder) it creates an alias instead. I can no longer move any files on my computer, after installing Lion. What the ?!
(This behavior is the same whether I use my Apple mouse, Wacom tablet, or the Wacom mouse, so it's not a hardware problem.)
Any clues? I need to solve this NOW.
    Thank you.

Here's the answer, discovered by spending a few hours on the phone with a very good Apple support person...
Part of Lion's new protection scheme is to prevent new users from accidentally deleting things that they shouldn't. That makes sense, and is no bigee on it's own. But, one "detail" not mentioned can be a "gotcha" if you're not aware of it. Here's my example:
Within my Applications folder, I have a folder called "Graphics", into which I place things like my 3D software, Photoshop, etc.. Within each of those folders, I've nested other folders, containing project files. That's a problem with Lion, because when you try to drag one of these files to the desktop, it will create an alias, rather than moving the actual file. The answer is "Don't store files (nested or not) within the Applications folder". (Move them to the Documents folder, or another custom folder you create.
It's very simple, but may take you a while to move these files, if you work like I do. First, COPY the files to a new folder. Then, delete the old ones in your Applications folder.

  • How do I get Finder windows to hold their settings?

Reading in other discussions, I see some folks are having problems with desktop icons moving around. My desktop icons are fine and stay put, but my Finder windows continually rearrange themselves to whatever random design Lion wants to give them.
They will not retain size, toolbar on / off, arrange by / sort by, icon size or grid spacing etc. For a while I thought I had the problem sorted by leaving the main User window open when I shut down at night, but this 'solution' didn't hold either.
I have worked my way through the View options, tried resetting defaults etc etc, but either there's nothing I can do about it (bug?) or I am missing something simple.
Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA

I have this problem too, and it's maddening.  My latest effort fo fix it has been to make .DS_Store read only using the Terminal.  This will work for directories that you never alter; I did it to my home directory.  If you do it to directories that change, the results will be undefined, because the Finder will be unable to write changes to the .DS_Store file reflecting the position of the new files.
To do this, open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities, and then type:
    cd "/Path/to/directory/to/fix"
Replace the path with the folder you need to fix.  If you're not sure what it is, you can just type "cd " (without the quotes, but note the space after the letters 'cd') and then drag the folder you want to fix onto the Terminal window.  Then press return.
    Now, type:
    chmod 444 .DS_Store
Make sure you include the period at the beginning of the .DS_Store name.  Press return.  This will effectively lock the .DS_Store file and prevent the Finder from screwing it up.  Your icon positions and window settings will be fixed in place until you make the .DS_Store file writable again.  To do that, repeat Step 1 above, and change Step 2 as follows:
    chmod 644 .DS_Store
That will return the .DS_Store file to its original state and undo the changes you made.
I have tested this only on my home directory, which never changes.  Doing this to directories to which files are added and removed will result in undefined behavior.  It will not damage your computer or your files, but Finder windows for that directory will not behave in a predictable fashion.

  • Finder window does not open when dock icon is clicked

    Hi would like some help
When I click the finder icon in the dock nothing happens, the only way I can get finder open is to go file>new finder window
just started doing this 1 day ago ?
    thanks

Have you got an instance of finder open in another desktop? If you right click on the finder icon you can show all windows, then close any that are open. Failing that relaunch finder, if you click on the Apple in the top menu bar, go to force quit, and select finder, then relaunch it to see if it solves your problem.
I once had this problem when I had left a finder window open in a connected tv screen, disconnected the tv and had the same problem of not being able to open finder normally.

  • Icon Preview is not shown for mp3 files in finder

Hi. Recently I noticed icons of mp3 files are no longer as used to be in finder. Previously I had a dark music note icon and when i hover my mouse there was a play button. Now I only see itunes icon in mp3 files. "Show Icon Preview" option is enabled, and i can preview image and pdf files in finder. But something happened to the mp3 files. It is very annoying. Please guide me to get back the good old icon preview for mp3 files.

Displaying icons as previews of files
In Finder windows and on the desktop, the icons for files can appear as thumbnail previews of the file contents. For example, instead of seeing a generic icon for a PDF file, you can see a miniature version of what’s in the PDF file. If you “hover” over the icon for a movie or sound file, you’ll see a Play button, which you can click to view the movie or hear the sound. (If you don’t see a Play button, enlarge the icon.)
NOTE:If you’re using Cover Flow view, you’re already previewing files and don’t need to change any settings.
    To display icons as previews:
To work with icons in a Finder window, click the Finder icon in the Dock.To work with icons on the desktop (the background area of your screen), click the desktop.
If you’re working with icons in a Finder window, click one of the View buttons in the toolbar to select icon, list, or column view.
Choose View > Show View Options.
    Select “Show icon preview.”
If you’re working in a Finder window, you can also set the following options, depending on which view you’re using:
In Icon view: Use the “Icon size” slider to adjust the size of the preview image.
In List view: Click one of the two “Icon size” buttons.
In Column view: To see a larger preview in the adjacent column, select “Show preview column.”
NOTE:The Finder may not be able to show a preview for some files.
Another way to get a quick preview is to select one or more images, and then click the Quick Look (eye) button in the Finder window toolbar, or press the Space bar.

  • Finder window, alpha sort weird - Can it be changed

Apple has this very nice, but completely incompatible sorting order for files in finder windows ( by name )
For example: "_" (underscore) is tops on the Mac, and way down under Windows & Unix.
Is there a way to set the sorting order that the Finder uses?
    Thanks

    Hi, William and Barry —
Another Finder peccadillo raises its head. Fyi...
Although it was about "Date Modified" sorting, Mark Douma®'s post in this recent thread may be related. I participated (somewhat foolishly) in the thread, so yours brought it to mind...
I'm sure this isn't what you had in mind, but you could conceivably use a utility like File Buddy to rename large batches of Dreamweaver files, if that would help to meet your objective.

  • Finder window hanging

This problem just started this morning. When I open a new window in the finder, it does not show the contents of my hard drive, the window is empty and in the bottom right hand corner of the window, you can see one of those spinning circles that is a signal for you to wait for the window to load, only it never does.
I just had two automatic updates this morning before this started happening--Quicktime 7.1.6 and Security Update 2007-004 verson 1.1
Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it? My computer is virtually unusable this way, since I can't get access to my hard drive files through Finder windows.
    iBook G4 2004   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Here are several suggestions.
If you haven't already tried this... go to your Desktop and click File>New Finder Window. When the window appears, click MacintoshHD. See if that does the trick. If not.... also click your Home Folder icon in the Sidebar and see if that works. It sounds like your have a corrupted Finder preference file. If you can access your files at some point, you should delete the pref file... here's how to do that. Go to: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. Locate this file in the Preferences folder: com.apple.finder.plist. Drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
Run Disk Utility. It's located: Applications>Utilities. Repair Disk Permissions and close Disk Utility. Reboot and try a Finder window.
    Hopefully something helped.
