Organizing for smarter sync with iPhone/iPad

I have been using iPhoto for a while and found a way to organize my photos that works pretty well for me. I use events to group photos, I use the checkmark keyword to mark photos that I like, and I use other keywords to create smart albums for other purposes. I keep unchecked photos around in case I want to go back and mess with them. I just delete the really bad photos.
I used to only sync the last 6 months of checked photos to my iPhone, but I decided that I want all of my checked photos. Easy enough, just remove the date limit on the smart album for checked photos. However, this leaves me with no event-based organization on the phone. It is just years worth of photos in one pile.
So, the question is... is there a way to keep the event organization but only pull photos that are checked?
Or, is there a way to organize that I haven't thought of?

It would be nice if the iPhone let you create smart albums on the fly, but it's pretty much a dumb client for iPhoto. So, you'll have to do more work in iPhoto setting up what you want to see on the iPhone.
My method--I have smart albums (eg, Rated pix from Hawaii, Rated pix from Christmas 2009) and sync those. I also sync all Rated Pix as a big album, but that's not that usable. So mine's not a very efficient method---I wind up creating lots of albums and sorting out which ones I want synced.
A workable approach for you might be to create multiple smart albums, perhaps based on date--eg, "checked photos from Jan-June 2010". Create one of those every six months and you've got some basic, easy to maintain organization.
I would actually like to see both iPhoto and iTunes have a feature--"sync my rules to the iPhone and reapply them to the big bucket of music/photos files that I've moved to the iPhone". But I doubt Apple would ever do it. But you can Send Feedback from the Help menu in iPhoto, if you like.

You need OSX 10.7.2 or higher in order to access icloud.  The mobile me account is now defunct (it closed down more than a year ago).

  • IWork files do not sync with iPhone/iPad using iTunes

When trying to sync Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents by adding the files to the respective app category in iTunes >Apps >Apps  >Documents and pressing Add..., I see the word "sync" on iPhone/iPad just for about a second and then the homescreen on iPhone/iPad reappears. But the files are not there (in Pages, Numbers or Keynote). Other apps I use work fine with this transfer method. What is the problem here?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I tried that to no avail.
I tried to toggle on and off every setting you can imagine and restarting. Deleting the apps and reinstalling.
    Nothing.

Where is your iTunes Library located -on your Mac, or on the external drive?

  • Outlook 2007 sync with iPhone & iPad: All events on device one day behind !

    Dear all,
I stumbled over this recently when I started with my brand new iPad. Date/Time/Region/Timezone settings on desktop computer (win7) and iPhone and iPad are identical. Sync with Google calendar and 3rd party products on iPhone / iPad / Outlook works perfect.
Can maybe anyone shed some light on this ? iPhone calendar used to sync fine, not sure when the problem started (maybe with OS 3.1.2 ?)
    TIA

  • Syncing with iPhone & iPad

    Hi,
i am in the process of gettin rid of my macbook, once I do this i am purchasing the new iPad - the worry I have is - what happens to my music, tones, movies and books etc in itunes, as i know there isnt an itunes option on the ipad?
Will these be added through my apple ID?
what is the eqivalent on the ipad for those that have one?
I will be syncing the ipad with my iphone so will everything on my iphone be transferred onto the ipad too?
    C x

    Try this (from <http://chimac.net/2010/05/16/is-your-ical-not-syncing-to-iphone-or-colors-are- funky/>)
    1. As a first step, I suggest resetting the sync history on your Mac. This is done via iSync preferences with the iSync application located in your Applications folder.
    2. After selecting reset sync history with iSync preferences, restart your Mac and try again. Disconnect your iPhone and quit iTunes.
    3. At the iCal menu bar, go to File and select Back up iCal.
    4. Save the backup on your Desktop.
    5. Delete all calendars from iCal so that is it empty. (You must have at least one calendar remaining…just create a new blank calendar)
    6. At the iCal menu bar, go to File and select Restore iCal – selecting the backup file placed on your Desktop.
    7. Launch iTunes and connect your iPhone.
    8. Check if this resolves the problem.

  • Mac not syncing with iPhone/iPad

Can someone help me?  My Mac is acting up.  Over the past 3 days, I have not been able to get my Mac to sync with my iphone or ipad like I have in the past.  When I open up my calendar on Mac, it says it cant be refreshed and won't let me do a thing until I force it to quit.  I input things on my reminders and notes on my Mac but it won't show up on my other 2 devices.  But if I put stuff on my iphone/ipad it will show up on my Mac!? I've tried updating, shutting down, connecting with a USB.  I don't know what else to do.  I really don't want to have to delete all my stuff because its a lot!  Help please!

  • Outlook 2011 for Mac Syncing with iPhone 5

    THIS IS WHAT I HAVE:
Macbook Pro running OS X (10.8.2) - Mountain Lion
    iPhone 5 running iOS 6.0.1
    Outlook for Mac 2011 (14.2.4)
I am coming from a PC that ran the most current Outlook and iTunes.  Before I switched to my Macbook Pro I was able to input calendar items into Outlook on the PC and then plug my iPhone 5 into the PC and everything would sync accordingly.  Ever since I switched over to Mac my Outlook calendar items will not sync.
THIS IS WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO DO:
Sync my Outlook calendar and contacts between my iPhone 5 & my Macbook Pro. It sounds simple but after reading almost every post possible I have come to a conclusion that I might have to switch back to my PC for such a simple problem.
Can anyone with this same problem help me with success?
If not is there anyone that can suggest any other way that I can have everything synced up?  I have tried icloud but I don't want everything in the cloud.
    Thank you in advanced.
    Ryan

  • Contacts sync with iPhone, iPad & MacBook Pro but not calendar won't

OK, so on my iPhone and iPad I have software V 6.1.3, my MacBook Pro 10.8.3. I can get contacts to sync with all 3 but the calendar nothing wants to sync.

OK, I made a change to calendar on MacBook Pro and it syncd with iPad & the iPhone. I deleted it on the iPad and it syncd with the MacBook but not the phone. So apparently the problem is between the iPhone & the iPad.

  • Create low rez photo library to sync with iPhone / iPad

Is there a tool or utility to create a duplicate photo library that's resized smaller so I can sync them to my iPhone? I'd like to have all my photos on my devices but don't want to waste a a lot of space. Ideally this tool would be automatic so I wouldn't need to manage it manually. For instance if I transferred new photos from my camera it would then automatically create new smaller sized photos for my devices. Thanks for shy suggestions!!!

    No.
The iPhone already creates smaller sized photos for the iPhone Photo App so its would be pretty pointless.
You could alwasy create your own minimal size iPhoto content however I have seen reports/threads in here of iPhoto upscaling tiny photo's/images to keep the size consistent with the rest of the library. Unfortunately, the upscaling often will create bigger space images that you started out with.

  • Macbook pro not syncing with iphone/ipad photos

My iphoto on my Macbook Air has stopped updating photos from my phone. The ipad syncs them but the MBA doesn't. It stopped at the end of March and hasn't added any since then.. any ideas? Everything else syncs, ie contacts, calendar etc.
I've tried disabling Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane and iPhoto's Photo Stream preference pane, rebooting and reenabling both as previously advised. This didn't work.
    Thanks

Reset iOS devices and your Mac.
    Tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Photos off then back on.
And one more time on your Mac. System Preferences > iCloud
Deselect the box next to Photos then reselect it.
Give iCloud a minute or two to re sync the data.

  • Ipad notes not syncing with iphone notes

My iphone 4 and ipad 3 arent syncing their notes, even though ive checked the iCloud & mail, contacts, calendars settings on both devices and they are set up the same. The only difference i can see is the iphone notes has a button on the top left corner called Accounts, which the ipad doesnt.
It seems that they used to sync as some of the old notes on the ipad are from my iphone but they no longer sync and its really starting to bug me

Of all the discussions I read on this topic—including the official notes from Apple—I found this thread to be the most instructive on how syncing occurs between an iPhone and iPad, as well as why syncing seems to fail. I came here because my iPhone 4 had 39 Notes but my iPad had only 28, and I could not figure out why syncing was not occuring.
What I learned here—thank you very much—that I did not find was made clear enough elsewhere is that syncing only occurs when both the default email accounts to which the Note is sent is the same on both devices, namely the iCloud account. If there is a mismatch, as was occurring on my iPhone, then syncing will not succeed simply because the iPhone is not sending the Note to the iCloud account which the iPad is associated with.
In other words, an iPhone user can inadvertently have an email account other than the iCloud account designated as the "default" account associated with the Notes application on the iPhone, thus guaranteeing that the Note will not be sent to the iCloud account, thus causing syncing betweent the two devices to fail.
In my case, when I clicked on the Accounts button in the Notes app on my iPhone 4, I discovered three items: (1) All Notes.(2) The Name of an AOL email account. (3) iCloud. When I clicked on the arrow for All Notes, I saw all 39 Notes. When I clicked on the arrow for iCloud, I saw only 28 Notes. And when I clicked on the arrow for the AOL account, I found the 11 Notes that I had created on the iPhone that did not get synced to the iPad.
When I examined the Settings for the Notes app, I then discoved that my AOL had been checked off as the "Default Account." This incorrect selection was the cause of the whole problem! In order for Notes created on my iPhone to be sent to the cloud for subsequent syncing with my iPad and my Mac(s), I had to change that Default Account setting to my iCloud account.
As far as getting those missing 11 Notes to appear on the iPad so that all Notes on all devices would be in sync, I did a copy and paste job using the DiskAid application from DigiDNA, an application that allows you to transfer files and other data between your Mac and iOS devices. Using DiskAid, I simply viewed the contents of each Note, selected all the text, copied it, and pasted it in a new Note that I created in Safari while connected to my iCloud.com account. I suppose that one could do a copy and paste operation within the Notes app itself, by creating new Notes within it and copying the content of the Notes that were created in the non-iCloud account, before deleting those old, redundant Notes. But I found using DiskAid to be more elegant.
The thought of using a Windows application to bring my Notes up to date was never a temptation. You can get the job done entirely within the Mac environment. While DiskAid and its companion FileApp can do a great job of letting you access, view, and transfer your content from your iOS devices to the Mac, it is unfortunately not possible to copy back Notes that were transferred from one iOS device to a Mac back to another iOS device. Hence, I had to resort to the copy and paste operation on each Note one-by-one.

  • How do i find which Apple ID is associated with music in my iTunes? When I sync with my iPad and iPhone it tells me I have music, apps etc from more than five IDs. I am asked for PW for a number of now extinct accounts.

Go to Settings/icloud. The Apple ID at the top of the screen is the only one you need to be concerned about. That one MUST be a working ID, and you must know the password for it, or you will be unable to use the phone if it ever crashes, you want to update it, or you want to sell it.

  • TS4002 iCloud for email is not on my Mac. How can I get email and iCal to sync with iphone and ipad.

iCloud for email is not on my Mac. It should be under Internet and wireless in System Preferences but it is not. Basically I am trying to get iCloud running successfully on my Mac for email and Calendar so that it will sync with my iPad and iPhone. I was an MobilMe customer and I've been having trouble with this conversion to iCloud. Thanks.

I too was a mobileme user and have just migrated to iCloud on mackbook pro w/OS 10.7.4. Transition caused my sent mailboxes to rearrange themselves so that I have no comprehensive 'sent' mailbox as I did previously and the view on both incoming and outgoing mailboxes keeps rearranging itself no matter how many times I set preferences. One result is that search function no longer works.  Is anyone else having problems like this?  All was fine for a week after transition but after having an evening when my password was repeatedly rejected I had to log in and out of iCloud (as directed by tech support) and w/in an hour or so the mailbox problem began.
