Organizing Iphoto 09 - Originals/Modified/deleted pictures

I 'd like to know a few things about Iphoto 09
1.) When I delete a picture, specifically, out of the events portion of iPhoto, it goes right to the trash, right? Now, to delete it completely, I would have to go to the trash, and right click the icon to empty trash.
Now, is this how I would delete a picture from iPhoto? (Permanently?)
What if I just want to delete one picture forever?
2.) When I modify my pictures, it creates another picture different from the original. How do I set it up to automatically delete the original, and keep the newer one?
3.) How to I set up iphoto to import y camera photos to a folder, or how do I make iPhoto create a new folder, and put the pictures in there? (NOT in the iPhoto Library!)
4.) When iphoto imports photos, does it put the photos into the "original" folder? Should I delete this folder to save space?

1.) When I delete a picture, specifically, out of the events portion of iPhoto, it goes right to the trash, right? Now, to delete it completely, I would have to go to the trash, and right click the icon to empty trash.
It goes to the iPhoto trash
Now, is this how I would delete a picture from iPhoto? (Permanently?)
What if I just want to delete one picture forever?
Drag it to the iPhoto trash in the source pane on the left and empty the iPhoto trash - iPhoto menu ==> empty trash
2.) When I modify my pictures, it creates another picture different from the original. How do I set it up to automatically delete the original, and keep the newer one?
You can not - one key feature of iPhoto is that it always maintains the original - the digital negative - and you can alway go back to it
Having the digital negative is also a critical part of iPhoto 's non-destructive editing
3.) How to I set up iphoto to import y camera photos to a folder, or how do I make iPhoto create a new folder, and put the pictures in there? (NOT in the iPhoto Library!)
Don't use iPhoto - use image capture (in your applications folder) to move your photos to the desired folder -- or use the finder if your camera mounts to the desktop -- or use a USB card reader
4.) When iphoto imports photos, does it put the photos into the "original" folder?
Yes - yes if you are using the default (and highly recommended) managed library
Should I delete this folder to save space?
No if you do (or if you make any modifications to the content or structure of the iPhoto library) you will corrupt your library and have to start over

  • Organizing my Library and Deleting Pictures

In my library I made duplicates of all my pictures for editing and now I need more space on my hard-drive for movies so I want to delete my original photos and leave the edited versions. I put all my originals in a folder and saved them to disks, I want to know if there is a more efficient way to delete the originals off my library without tediously going through again and selecting every other picture?
    Thanks, MrRaggy

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
In my library I made duplicates of all my pictures for editing
This is not necessary as iPhoto retains your original at all times. So now you've got your Original, your Original Copy and your Modified versions. Not duplicating before editing will save you 1/3 of the disk space.
I want to know if there is a more efficient way to delete the originals off my library without tediously going through again and selecting every other picture?
    Try using Duplicate Annihilator

  • How do I keep originals while deleting duplicates recently importing into iPhoto 11?

Installed iPhoto11. All previous photos were missing. Imported from previous system iPhoto9. Resulted in inordinate duplicates. How can I keep the previously organized originals and delete the duplicates that ended up with over 55000 photos? Please help. Thank you

You do NOT import an iPHoto library into another iPhoto library - you move it over and open it - If it is on a previous system Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward. Or if it is on an extrnal drive just drag it to the pictures folder and launch iPhoto

  • Delete iPhoto originals

Once I edit my photos, I really don't want to keep the original - I would be perfectly content with only having the modified photos. But the originals are stored in my iPhoto library. This is a poor way of using my disk space.
How do I delete the original photos - while still being able to keep the modified ones?
    thanks!

If you really want to delete your Originals then simply, don’t use iPhoto as Larry says. Iphoto follows the best prnciples of Digital Asset management and preserves your original like a film photographer protects his/her negative.
Also, remember that the Non-Destructive Editing feature of iPhoto also requires the Original file.
If disk space is an issue, you can easily run an iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • IPhoto 4.9.1 disappearing / deleting pictures?

    Hi everyone,
I have a problem viewing pictures in iPhoto 4.9.1. I noticed most of them was taken before 2012. As I was updating iPhoto with  the latest version it DID notify me about how my library is not fully compatible or converted - I do not remember unfortunately the alert as l thougth it's a step of the update and just went on with it. I don't rememeber the last time l viewed some of those pictures in iPhoto, however I'm pretty sure the problem accured now.
    The problem is:
    - I see all events
    - I see all tumbnails in All Events
    - I see all tumbnails in the event when l choose to browse it
    - instead of the picture I would like to view I see a huge '!' - you can only see the picture for a split second and then it turns to this mark
l did some research and l noticed that as I'm viewing the contents of iPhoto Library in Finder, under folders
    - masters
    - originals
    - modified
    - previews
I only see one folder '2012'
    However in folders
    - Data
    - Thumbnails
I do see all of my folder '2010' '2011' '2012' also a folder called 'Segments'
can l still recover those files? I have a back up but obviously l would like iPhoto to work properly.. I don't understand how did the pictures disapear
    Anyone experiencing the same issue..?

Hi, thanks for your answer & quick help. If you could help me with my questions I would be very greatful
Firstly how do l know if this doesn't happen again and what could cause it? Is this maybe an iphoto bug?
You suggested to go through restoring already should I rebuild the library or use the iphoto first aid? Could there be a recovery option to restore within iPhoto? I'm sorry but l just don't understand what happend and if it was something l did or it's an iphoto issue...
I hope that there is a different solution or explonation to what the problem could be because restoring from back up of multiple sources and folders when l had everything orginised will be really hard and take a lot of time... (I don't have an iphoto back up but manual folder back up on multiple external discs)
    Thanks again for your help!
    Regards
    Ewa

  • I am moving all my iphoto pictures to seperate folders outside of iphoto.  I have found iphoto slighlty cumbersome.  After I move all pictures from iphoto to a separate file how can I delete all the iphoto photos without deleting the ones in the file?

I am moving all of my iphoto pictures into seperate folders becuase iphoto is great, but a bit cumbersome when I need to transfer all the pictures to a external drive.
    1) After I move all pictures, how can I delete the iphoto pictures without destroying the ones I have in files
    2) how can I ensure that I have sucessfully captures all the iphoto files so when I delelte from iphoto I have not forgotten any
    3) is there a way to determine what duplicate pictures I have?
    Thanks!

If you Control click on the iPhoto Library, you'll see a list of folders - one named "Masters". Inside of this folder are all of your original, high-res photos. You can copy them to other folders if you like.
You can't delete iPhoto pics without deleting the ones in the iPhoto Library.
You can copy all of your Masters pics out of the Library, ensuring that you won't forget any.
I don't know of anyway to determine if there are duplicate photos - most (if not all) have a unique name assigned.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

So you want to move the iPhoto Library?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.

  • Deleting pictures from iPhone/iPhoto

I'd like to permanently delete pictures from my iPhone and iPhoto with one operation. Is there any way to do that?
    Thanks

You can do it through the folder option with the device paired to iTunes. Otherwise you can select them to delete off the device by going to the album, hitting the box with the arrow coming out of it. Checking each one you don't want and after selecting them all hitting the delete.

    1) You asked "Does she need to reconnect to that itunes/computer and if so what do we need to do to remove this folder of pics from her ipod?" Yes, you have to connect the iPod to that computer and go to the Photos pane for the iPod in iTunes and uncheck sync photos and the click on synce/apply. In the future do not check sync photos.

    2)
Create a NEW account for using these instructions. Make sure you follow the instructions. Many do not and if you do not you will not get the None option. You must use an email address that you have not used with Apple before.
Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card
Then on the iPod go to
    - Settings>Messages>Send and receive and sign out your ID and sign into hers. Make sure that only her ID email address is listed.
    - Settings>FaceTime sign out of your ID and sign into hers. Make sure that under You can be reached at only her ID email address is listed
    - Settings>iCloud and sign out and sign in with hers
Contnue to use the commpn ID/account for Settings>iTunes and App stores.

Wtih iPhoto 9 when the iPhoto Trash is emptied the files get moved to the Trash bin in the Dock as a second chance to change your mind.  Look in the Dock's Trash bin.

  • How to delete pictures with iPhoto off your camera roll?

I bought iphoto to help me organize pictures on my Ipad and Iphone.  I especially like the idea of being able to compair two or more similar pictures and save the best photo and delete the copies that weren't as good.  I liked this feature but then discovered that it was not deleting the pictures off the camera roll.
I would love someone to tell me how to delete pictures in iphoto so they are removed from my Camera Roll at the same time.  Being able to look at two pictures at the same time and decide which one you want to keep is great, but if I can't delete the one I don't want it is a waste of time.

    Titan2,
Thanks for the reply,  I agree that the Iphoto needs to be the stock app.  Hope it isn't too long.
    Ralph,
I agree that the iphoto for the ipad might not be the best place to organize, but when you are retired and traveling you would like to select the pictures you want to keep and not wait until you get home.  The camera roll doesn't let you compair two or more photos to see which one is best,  Iphoto does but I want the poorer photos off the ipad so I don't have to wait until I get home and I want to use the memory for the best photos.   I'm trying to figure out a round about way so I know which ones to delete on the camera roll.
I thank both of you for your comments.

  • How can i delete pictures from my iPad using iPhoto?

I would like to use iPhoto to delete pictures from my iPad and iPhone but I can't seem to do that.  I don't want to go through and mark each individual picture on the device itself to delete them.

You can only do this when importing. You could try using Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) for the job.
