Organizing iphoto photos

I was wondering how you can organize your photos in the folders so it doesn't contain all the Roll numbers. I hate having all the roll numbers and now knowing what the pics are or if i go into the roll and its only one pic and i want to put them all together in a folder. I have changed it once before and lost the image completely when viewing them in iphoto so i don't want to make the same mistake. I know already how to organize them in iphoto by selecting new album. If anyone can help me that would be appreciated.

What version are you using? v6 has rolls and v7 has Events, and you're posting in the v7 forum.
Remember: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can
move photos between Rolls,
you can rename rolls,
edit them, create them,
as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
Also, There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Opening organized iPhoto photos from Seagate external harddrive

I have a Seagate Backup Plus Slim Portable Drive 2TB that I have my entire laptop backed up to. I have over 23,000 photos in my iPhoto 9.6 Library which has been significantly slowing down my Macbook Pro for a while. Since my entire iPhoto Library is backed up, I want to delete most of my photos from my laptop. However, before I delete them, I want to be sure that I can open up iPhoto from my external hard drive and all my photos will be there, organized the way I have them organized now.
I’ve tested this many times, trying to figure out how to open my backed up library on my laptop. I’ve tried option > open iPhoto and creating new libraries/opening existing libraries, but each time I do this, iPhoto loads up with no pictures in it at all.
I know that everything is backed up, but once I delete my pictures from my laptop, how will I open my backed up library to view all my photos again? The option > open solution has not worked for me at all. I’ve never been able to open the backed up library (not sure if this has something to do with the fact that I still have all the photos in my existing library). I'm hesitant to delete my photos before seeing all my photos loaded and organized from my external hard drive.

    Ok
Again what you are trying do will not work
you can NOT open an iphoto library that is a TM backup - you must first restore the backup to your main drive and then open it - https://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
And as well documented TM removes old backups when it runs out of space so as I previously said
and depending on how you are managing the backups you may very well end up with the photos gone from the backup too
sooner or later all of the photos you deleted form your main library will be deleted form the backup - again it is not an archive
You can do what ever you want - but again
the best way to accomplish what you want is to have an EHD formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) directly connected to your MBP with a fast wired connection (Firewire, USB 2 or 3 or Thunderbolt) - move your iPhoto library to it and start a new library on you MBP - use iPhoto Library Manager to move photos between libraries - and be sure your backup system is backing up both you main drive and your iphoto library archive drive
You can NOT do it the way you are trying to - it simply does not work that way

  • Editing filenames/Organizing iphoto photos on HD

Hi, i am pretty new to using iphoto and i just got back from a trip and have imported about 500 photos in iphoto. ive noticed that you can change the title of each photo but the actual filename stays the same (i.e. dsnc0050.jpg). i find this really annoying because i send a lot of photos in emails and they are hard to find with these abstract filenames. also, in connection with this, is there a way to organize the photos for iphoto under one folder instead of having them split into modified and original folders with many "rolls" in each of those? i hope this is clear...thanks!

The philosophy of iPhoto is simple, leave the original file untouched. That's why adding a title in iPhoto doesn't change the filename.
    However all is not lost.

So, no, you cannot re-organise the iPhoto Library Folder - however the tips above might make that unnecessary. By all means, posts again if you need more clarification.

  • IPhoto/photo stream

I am new to iMac. I plugged in my iPhone to upload all my trip pictures into an event in iPhoto. Only some of them came and the others seem to be in photo stream album. I wanted to move them from photo stream and put them into an event. I dont think I am understanding photo stream very well.

    Hello RossSE,
Thank you for your question.  It sounds like you are trying to organize your photos in iPhoto, but Photo Stream has imported some of your photos and you manually imported some photos.
When you enable Photo Stream in iPhoto, photos on the iCloud server are imported to your library in an event for that month by default.  My Photo Stream stores up to 1000 photos for up to 30 days, so you may need to connect your iPhone to import videos or photos that did not make it to My Photo Stream because of the 1000 photo limit or the 30 day limit.
You can learn more about Photo Stream here:
    My Photo Stream overview
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#phtac7ec5f4
If you would like to turn off the automatic import of photos and only manually import photos by connecting your iPhone to the computer, you can disable the automatic import in iPhoto > Preferences > iCloud:
Turn on My Photo Stream in iPhoto
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#pht7aaadf50
Alternatively, you can rearrange the photos in Events using the steps in this article:
    Move photos between events
    http://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/9.5/#pht6d6094b4
Additionally, you may want organize your photos using Albums.  Personally, I prefer organizing my iPhoto library with Albums:
A photo album in iPhoto is just like one you would create with printed photos: It’s a collection of photos you select from your library and arrange in the order you want.
You can create photo albums to:
Focus on a particular subject, such as your favorite nature photos
Group pictures that you want to send to a friend, post on a webpage, or burn to a CD or DVD
Gather a decade of anniversary photos
Find more information about organizing your library using standard Albums or Smart Albums at the following link:
    Album overview

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,

  • HT4889 How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

How can I transfer my iPhoto photos and iTunes library to my new iMac?

If the Migration Assistant won't do it, move them over as you would any other folder; they're located in the Pictures and Music folders of your home folder by default. The iPhoto library needs to be transferred via a drive, partition, or disk image formatted as Mac OS Extended or through an AFP network share.

1.)  How do I organized my photo album on my ipad?
2.)  How do I remove an album on my ipad?
3.)  i have taken over 1,000 photos on ipad, now it won't sync stuff to the ipad because it said there is not enough space.  I want to delete some past synced photos from the computer to create space, but I don't know how to find it on computer.  It sycned a portion of a file onto the ipad which is useless to me so I want to delete it all & start fresh.
4.)  I was thinking about copying some of those photos over so it would show up as new data maybe then it would sync to my ipad as a new & competed album.  Or will this create more problem because it would only be creating more photos?
5.)  By the way, I don't know how to use dropbox or anything like it, so I take photos of some files & web screen that I use regularly to always have access regardless of internet access.  That is why I have so many photos.  But I want to be able to separate & organized them by files, web screens, or topics.  I also want to be able to delete & update as needed.
6.)  If needed I am willing to delete 4 G of downloaded app to create space.  Will this help the space issue?  Also could I just leave the downloaded app to my computer only & only sync to to ipad as needed, since I don't need app as regularly.  I NEED "photo" ALL of the TIME!  I am out in the field, instead of carrying stack & stack of papers, I carry ipad with photo of these daily needed papers!

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • Can no longer print selected iPhoto photo with HP printer

iPhoto 09. Cannot print selected iPhoto photo with HP printer. I select the photo from iPhoto Library, go to File>print. The screen for Print comes up with another one on top of it that is blank but with text "Print...Processing 1..OK".  Clicking OK prints from that screen "Print, Processing page 1" (on correct 3x6 photo paper in black!).
I have run Apple Software Update. Run Permissions with problems (one: "Permissions differ on Library/Printers/h...". Have reinstalled iPhoto which has left one icon on Dock and 3 on desktop: iPhoto 07-27-19.app; iPhoto.app; iPhoto Library that I don't know what to do with with them, so just use the one on the dock which opens iPhoto Library.
Believe I read that after reinstalling iPhoto, a plug-in (possibly third party plug-in for HP?) must be installed. I have updated my HP printer to latest driver.
Would you advise how I can print photos in my iPhoto Library again, and also get those iPhoto icons off my desktop which only confuse me.  Thank you for your prompt attention.
    Out-of-patience Great Gramma

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Editing iPhoto photos in Photoshop Elements 4--5+ photos in the bin?

    Hi,
PSE4 is my preferred photo editor in iPhoto. When I attempt to edit/open more than 4 iPhoto photos at a time (which, given my preferred photo editor setting, automatically opens the photos for editing in PSE4), only a maximum of 4 photos appear at a time in the PSE4 Photo Bin. Why is this? I have opened many dozens of photos simultaneously in PSE4 before, all stored without a problem in the photo bin... Please help!
    Thanks,
    Maine

    Maine
iPhoto will send no more than 4 pics at a time to an external editor. This is to avoid inexperienced users inadvertently opening their entire library in their editor. There is no way around this.

  • IPhoto photo stream time zone/ duplicates issue

I've got a bunch of duplicate photos in my iPhoto library on my Macbook from both manually importing photos from iPhone when connected and from syncing via Photo Stream.
I've since disactivated Photo Stream, but still had duplicate photos on my computer.
I've merged all the albums called "October Photo Stream" with the other imports into one big list sorted by date.
The problem is, I was travelling quite a bit across different time zones, so they're not all really in order. It seems the Photo Stream copy of the photo (the one with the keyword attached) has the time and date as my "home" timezone, not as the "local" timezone as per the time where the photo was taken.
    Is this by design?
I'd now like to remove all the duplicates and was thinking I'd just search for Photo Stream keyword, then select all those pics and delete.... the problem is I'm not sure which ones actually have duplicates as they don't all have duplicates! I really can't figure out how/why some exist as duplicates and others don't... perhaps something to do with when I was/wasn't near a wifi network (applicable while I was travelling but less so for pictures at home as my wifi is always on at home).
This photo stream "feature" is confusing as ****, and don't even get me started on the other iCloud services like docs... could they have designed it any more counter intuitive if they tried?
    Any advice/ assistance appreciated.
Further, if I reactivate photo stream in future, how do I stop this behaviour from happening again?

I've noticed this same problem. I just got back from a trip overseas and the time on all my iPhone photos imported from the photo stream is wrong by two hours (the time difference). It seems a bit stupid to have the photos time stamped with your home time zone, and it means that when I imported the photos from my camera they're all out of order and I need to adjust the time on all the iPhoto photos. That's not particulary hard, it just seems unncessary. I hope someone form Apple notices this and fixes the problem.

  • Moving iPhoto, Photo Booth, & iMovie library to an external drive

I've search through most of the support community and still havent found a concrete answer. Like most my current internal harddrive is about full. Mostly filled with photos and movies. I have a external harddrive that Time Machine is enabled. I also backed u my iphoto & photo booth library to the external drive. I have yet to move over any imovie data until I am sure that process will work.
How do I move all data over so that iphoto, photo booth, & imovie can be ran fom my external harddrive. Also how can I ensure that imovie will direct itself to the iphoto library on my external because all movies from the past use the iphoto library as its directory. Once this is done I would like to delete all previous data off of my nternal drive
    Thank you

. I have a external harddrive that Time Machine is enabled. I also backed u my iphoto & photo booth library to the external drive. I have yet to move over any imovie data until I am sure that process will work.
Do you want to store your movies and photos on your Time Machine drive? That is not recommended, since you will not have a backup, if the media are only on your backup volume. You will need a second drive in addition to your backup drive, and this drive needs to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled), otherwise you cannot store photo libraries (iPhoto, Aperture) or iMovie events on that drive, see:  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture (remember, thta formatting erases a drive, you have to save any contents to another drive before formatting).
For iPhoto:  Once your external drive has the correct file system, simply select your iPhoto library in the Finder and drag it to that drive. Then double click the copied library to open it in iPhoto.
For iMovie: To move your iMovie events to an external drive, use the event browser in iMovie - don't use the Finder!
See this Help page:  Copy or move video from your Event Library to an external ... http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2302
I don't use Photo Booth, so I do not know how to move your Photo Booth photos.

I stated that I did try to do all of this when I first set up the new computer...I did do the Setup Assistant numerous times but my old computer kept freezing half way through.  Even if I did it when I first got the new computer back in Septemeber, I would have had the same issue b/c my old computer has been 'broken' for a while.  My old computer can't handle doing too much at once and I think the setup and then migration functions I tried were too much.  That's why I was hoping I could use the migration function piecemeal.  I wish I could just check off the exact files and folders I want vs. having to choose it at the 'user' level...that's too much for my old computer to have to transfer.
