Organizing movies in Itunes?

I have a large collection of various old TV shows from the 1950's and 1960's that I would like to use on my Ipod Gen5 / Ipad. Is there a way in I-Tunes in the Movies section to make folders or play lists. For example, I would want to put my Dragnet episodes in one, My Ozzie and Harriet in another, etc. Then when I synced my device I could add an entire playlist or look in the folder and choose the ones I wanted to watch at that time. As it is I have over 600 things in my Itunes movie library and it is tedious and awkward to search through all of them. Most are named by the date they aired instead of the show name so that further complicates things. On the drive I have them stored in I have them organized in folders and would like to have them organized within my Itunes library as well. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

  • Organizing Movies in iTunes to allow better searching in Front Row

Sorry if this question has been posted before, I did search...
I would like to organize movies in itunes into categories, (i.e. action, drama... etc.)
The reason behind this is to cut the amount of time it takes to scroll through the movies in Front Row.
I have tried playlists, but this does not have the desired effect. (i.e. it is music play list and only plays the sound)
    Is there a solution?
    Thank
    Sven

Are you going through the "Music" option (that goes through iTunes) or the "Videos" option in Front Row? You might see if they'll play through the "Videos" option.

  • I'm retiring my old computer (windows xp) to a new computer (windows 7). How can i easily move my itunes music from the old computer to the new computer? i have my playlists organized in my old computer, i would like it to stay that way in my new computer

i'm retiring my old computer (with windows xp) and bought a new computer (with windows 7). How can i easily move my itunes music from the old computer to the new computer? i have my playlists organized in my old computer, i would like it to stay that way in my new computer. I also have my ipods, iphone sync'd in the old computer so i want to make sure that things won't get messed up (my apps, playlists, etc) when i move over everything to the new computer and sync all my devices with the new computer.
Thanks in advance for the tips.

Make sure the XP box is upgraded to the latest version of itunes. Also make sure it's using the itunes media folder layout as explained here, because that's what the W7 is going to be using.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3847
Install itunes on the new W7 PC.
Get these folders from the XP machine
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
And put them here on the W7 machine
    C:\users\username\My Music\iTunes
    C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

  • Organizing and playing movies in iTunes

    Hi!
I've experimentet a little with putting all my movies into iTunes and use that for all my movies and songs. Movies ripped with HandBrake is playing fine, but .mpg files lacks (or whatever it's called) when the control panel is visible (the one where you can pause the movie, rewind it etc.), but plays smoothly when it disappears. And .avi files can't open at all.
Can you give me some pointers about using iTunes for more than just songs?
    Thanks

The same thing is happenning on my latest iTunes software. I cannot move the Diamond on the scrub line to advance/rewind my video. And using the next or back button indeed goes to the next movie and not to next chapter within movie....

  • HOW TO MOVE YOUR ITUNES LIBRARY TO AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

Read these directions before actually doing anything, just so you can do this right. I've messed things up before, it can get ugly...
That being said, here's what you've gotta do if you're running on a Mac:
Have all your music on the external hard drive. It should be organized in folders the way iTunes set it up
The folders should be organized something like this:iTunes Media (Top folder, everything is inside of this folder)
    Audiobooks
    Automatically Add To iTunes
    Books
    Downloads
    iPod Games
    iTunes U
    Mobile Applications
    Music
    Podcasts
    Ringtones
    TV Shows
    Voice Memos
Those folders are what I have in my 'iTunes Media' folder on my external hard drive. You don't necessarily need to have all of these folders. (I happen to just have a lot of things in my iTunes.)
    Finding your iTunes Library Files
The way iTunes works is there are two parts to make what you see in iTunes work right. There's your media (songs, video, iPod games and Apps, etc) and there are your library files. They tell iTunes what your playlists are, where your 'iTunes Media' folder is located, and a lot of other important things. Here is how to find the iTunes Library files (there will probably be more than one!)
    Look in (yourusername)/Music/iTunes
There will be a few things in here:
    Album Artwork (It's a folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    Itunes Library.itl
    iTunes Media (a folder)
iTunes Music Library Backup.xml (this file might or might not be here. If there is no file with this name, it's okay.)
    iTunes Music Library.xml
Some "temp" files (maybe, maybe not -- they are not important for this)
Anything in the list that is BOLDED needs to be placed in (yourusername)/Music/iTunesIf you copied these files to your external hard drive, you will need to copy them back onto your internal hard drive. These library files do not need to be in the same place as your iTunes Media folder.
Telling iTunes Where Your Music Is
Now that your iTunes Media folder is on your external drive, and your Library Files are in place in "(yourusername)/Music/iTunes", we need to open iTunes.
On the top bar of the screen, go to iTunes>Preferences.
In preferences, go to the farthest right tab, titled "Advanced" with a picture of a gear.
The top section says "iTunes Media Folder location" and underneath that you see a filepath ending in the 'iTunes Media" folder.
This path is probably wrong, not leading you through the external hard drive.
    If it is incorrect:
Click "change" on the right and then locate the folder in the prompt that shows up. Once the "iTunes Media" folder on your external hard drive is highlighted blue, click "Open" in the bottom right corner of the window.
Give iTunes a moment or two (depending on the size of your library) to re-locate all of your songs. Voila!
    If it is correct:Do nothing!
While you're in the advanced section, let's check to make sure you have a few important 'housekeeping' things checked off:
"Keep iTunes Media folder organized" (CHECK THIS BOX!)
"Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" (CHECK THIS BOX!)
At this point, iTunes should be all ready to go. Before I get into any troubleshooting, note a few things:
If you ever unplug/disconnect the external hard drive from the computer, you must first make sure that iTunes is NOT running.
Also, if the hard drive is unplugged and you open up iTunes, all of your songs will have little symbols next to them. Until you plug/reconnect the hard drive, the songs will stay like this and will be missing.
    TROUBLESHOOTING:
Not having permission to access the external hard drive:
In Finder (or on your desktop), right-click the external hard drive (if you don't have right-click, control-click will also work).
    Click on "Get Info"
A thin, tall window will appear on the screen.
Part One:In the "General" section, make sure that "Locked" is unchecked. If it IS checked, uncheck it.
    Part Two:
We are now focusing on the very bottom of the window, where it says "Sharing & Permissions"/
In the bottom right corner of the window there is a small padlock icon. Click it. When asked for an administrator password, type it in, and click "Ok".
You will now notice that the bottom section of the 'get info' window is not greyed out anymore. Make sure your user name (it says in parentheses "(Me)" so there is no going wrong here) has "Read & Write" privileges. If not, click on whichever privilege you currently have, and a drop-down menu will appear. Click on "Read & Write".
If you have any other issues, I will add them to the troubleshooting list to help you out. Hope this was helpful!

My iTunes library is set up the way I said in the top post and works totally fine.
Yes, and that is the default structure to which I was referring.  iTunes will organize it that way automatically unless people do start changing settings (in which case they should know what they are doing and how iTunes works with library files and media structure.)
Both ways work, the advantages of mine would be that should iTunes try looking fo a library, it will always be in the default location.
It makes people think they have to change media location in preferences.  They do not unless they want to relocate media only and leave other things on their internal drive (in which case there is no point in copying library files to the external, and you certainly wouldn't want to then delete them from your internal).
Downside is that then should someone move their iTunes library to anther computer they need to remember to get those library files on the external hard drive.
Just copy the whole iTunes folder and it will get the library files to the other drive in one step, along with all the other files.
Your post has good stuff but it makes a move appear intimidating and look like people have to do a lot of organizing to move the collection.  It also throws in  extra steps (namely altering preference settings) that could cause confusion or even make a mess of things.  If people leave iTunes to default preference settings (which most people do) the move summarizes into a short line:  Copy a folder and hold an extra button the next time you start iTunes.
Note that the instructions in the link I provided earlier do also include many steps, but those are to ensure that everybody does have it all organized correctly before simply copying the iTunes folder.  In the end it is just a simple action.

  • C: drive is full - move only iTunes Media folder contents to another drive without consolidating?

My iTunes library contains a combination of music/movies/etc that I've purchased or downloaded from the iTunes Store as well as music I've purchased from Amazon and my own ripped CDs (not ripped via iTunes...other software).  The Amazon and ripped files have always lived on my D drive (for easier sharing betwen family members, without opening up permissions on our User folders), while the Store files all live under my User profile on C.
I'd like to move the iTunes Media folder contents off of C and onto D.  All the instructions that use "consolidating" and "keeping the media folder organized" will not work for me, since I do not want all my files under the iTunes Media folder...I like them where they are now in D:\Music\Amazon and D:\Music\CDCollection.
Do I have to resort to moving the files myself, adding them into the library again, then cleaning up the orphaned library entries that are pointing to the old location?
    Thanks!

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your music folder to D:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library.
Click Choose and navigate to the file D:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
Check the library is working properly.
Use the option File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to import any stay files to the new library folder.
Delete the old iTunes folder on the C: drive.
Ideally you will also backup this library to another drive.

  • Organizing movies for Aperture?

    Hi All.
Can I put all my movies in one folder before importing to Aperture or should I keep them in folders according to topic? Also, is there a preferred format for these or do I need to convert any over to another format?
I am organizing movies so that I can see them in Aperture and now have them in a "To Sort" folder in my Movies folder.
I have the following format in various folder which are ostensibly organized by topic:
    .mov
    .mp4
    .wmv
    .m4v
    .iMovieProject
    .avi
    .rcproject
    - and -
    .key
    .pdf rcproject
In some cases (rcproject and iMovie) I believe I was simply testing out software. In other cases these likely came from my old Windows XP Hard Drive.
I am moving to Keynote (.key) format for presentations but am not sure if these go into Aperture and I'm interested to know if the movies should be converted (say with something like Handbrake).
Thanks for any help as I get her tidied up.

    Hi. Thank you.
It has been a bit of a long haul here with a lot of data but I will be relieved when it is all on the mac.
So, can you help me a little further with a couple of things?
First, I gather you are OK with my just dumping them all in one folder and importing that folder, then sorting them in Aperture? I think they are not as organized as they should be and it would make sense to sort them in Aperture.
Second, do you happen to know if all the formats listed will go into Aperture or whether I need to convert some of them?
Lastly, can you help me with the idea of backing up with "Vaults"? I am not clear on whether or why there would be a need to backup data that "belongs" to a database such as iTunes or Aperture in a manner that is different from a normal backup. I mean, I am backing up incrementally using Time Machine and I am backing up off site using Carbon Copy Cloner. Wouldn't either of these suffice? I mean, what is the ddifference between either fo these methods and Vault?
    Thanks a bunch,

  • How Do I Move Users iTunes Music To Single Folder?

A friend wants to move the music in family members Home folders to a single folder on an external drive. Then all the user accounts should point to that folder. The destination folder is already being used by his account and it has a lot of music files already.
My question: what steps do I take to safely transfer the files to the external drive and connect the iTunes accounts to that folder? I've searched but I haven't found info on how to accmplish this...

Whooo boy, this is a complicated subject.  It would be simplified if I knew exactly what you wanted set up because then I wouldn't have to cover each permutation.
First, you are right about library files.  iTunes works through library files. It keeps tracks of what you have in your  collection, what is in which playlist, where the files are, etc.  Then there are the media files which are the actual music files.  Under default condition iTunes keeps these all carefully organized in an iTunes folder in each computer account holder's directory.
HT1203 has each person put just their media files in an area accessible to all, but keeps them separate from everybody else's.  Each person retains their own library file so they can do their individual playlists for example.  If they want somebody else's music they can add the other person's media to their library by dragging the other person's media file to their iTunes. It will the tracks to their library.  So yes, the first step is setting putting a media foleder in a shareable location. Each person does that. The second step is each person going out and adding other people's media to their library file.
There are several questions I have for HT1203 that I could answer by experimentation on my computer but I don't feel like investing the time (to be honest).  For example, normally when you add a track to iTunes that is not in your media folder, iTunes will copy it to your media folder. Does that mean each person ends up duplicating the other's collection because it copies it to it?  The article does not tell you to disable "copy files to media folder when adding to library" in iTunes' preferences.  You wouldn't want to do this because what would happened then if you added something to your own library.  I guess the way to get around this issue would be to hold the option key and drag the other person's media to your library which would cause it to add it but not copy it.  There's more advantages and disadvantages but I am getting tired of typing.
A variant of the above is to merge all the different media folders by consolidating them.  That's mentioned as a part of http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527  Consolidating copies the selected files to the location set in iTunes media folder preferences and iTunes keeps track of where they have moved.  iTunes is good at keeping track of moved tracks if they are on the same drive but it it cannot follow them if they are copied between drives.  Because you want to also move their collections to an external drive and iTunes cannot keep track of them if you do that, you cannot simply drag the media folders to a shared location as in HT1203, otherwise all their libraries would end up saying they cannot find the files.  You must consolidate them to that drive for their libraries to keep track of where the files are going. They can then add the other people's media from their new homes on the external.
Frankly, you can do just about anything with iTunes once you understand how it works. I have in the past kept media on two different drives and would move it around all the time without problem because I told iTunes to not bother organizing or my media, I would do it myself.
I'll give myself a typing break now.

  • I want to move my itunes library but keep it in iCloud

i want to move my itunes library to a externial drive but keep it on icloud (actualy i thnk its called somethong eltse but it keeps my devises synced and acesible) how do i do this

The OP does not state laptop/portable. I took a WAG thinking it was desktop. (still don't know).
Your way will at least show the library if the external is not attached. However, everything ends up with the dreaded ! .
Then the problem comes when the  external is reattached, especially if there were files added without it attached.
Moving the media folder to a different location should not interfere with your syncing, as long as you point iTunes again to the new location of the library.
    Underlined statement is the issue.
The iTunes media folder is not the iTunes library. Pointing iTunes prefs - Advanced to this location again may or may not fix it. Usually not.
iTunes library = iTunes folder and all media, wherever it is located. You can have items in iTunes that are not in the iTunes media folder.
iTunes media folder = items added to iTunes with Copy files to iTunes media folder when organized is ticked and also all purchased items (unless you moved them elsewhere). If you consolidate the library, everything will get copied to the iTunes media folder
It can get very complicated which is why I simply recommend to move the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder.

  • How do I move my itunes account from one country to another?

How do I move my itunes account from one country to another?  I set up my itunes account in the United States and now I live in England.  I would like to transfer my purchases from my US account to my British account and then download them onto my new ipod.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes and I have updated my Windows 7 operating system.  I have tried to get in touch with apple and the advisor said he could not help me.  Ideas?

Before you change the country, note the following:
    - you must use any remaining store credit on your account
    - download all purchased content
    - ensure you have no current rentals(if you do, you'll have to wait for them to expire)
    - provide a new payment(such as a credit or debit card) associated with a valid billing address in the UK or an iTunes Gift Card purchased in the UK
    - content purchased from the iTunes Store is country-specific. If you wish to upgrade any of your iTunes Store content to iTunes Plus, you'll need to do this before you change countries. The content you purchased while your account was set to the previous country will not be eligible for upgrade once you've changed countries.
    - after you change countries, you will no longer receive application update notifications in iTunes for the apps you purchased in your original country. However, you'll still receive update notifications on your iOS device for any applications installed on it. In addition, you'll be able to download previously purchased applications again for free if they are available on your new country's store. You will not be charged and the download will not appear on your Purchased page. If a previously purchased application is not available in your new country, you will not be able to download it again for free.
    - If you have an iTunes Match subscription, you can't change countries until the subscription has expired.
    - If you have purchased a Season Pass, you cannot change the country associated with your account until that season is done airing and the last episode of the season has been added to the iTunes Store.
Taking the above into consideration, here's how to change your country:
    1. Open iTunes and click Sign In.
    2. Enter your iTunes Store account name and password, then click Account Info.
    3. On the Apple Account Information page, click Change Country or Region.
    4. Enter the updated information and save your changes.

  • How can I get an HD movie from iTunes store to play on original iPad

I recently purchased an HD movie--Brave--from the iTunes store.  I'm trying to play on my original iPad (iPad 1), but iTunes refuses to synch it because it says it is an unsupported format.  The movie is in 1080p format.  I typically get both HD and SD formats when I purchase movies, but iTunes no longer downloads the SD version automatically when I purchase the HD version.  I attempted to get an SD version from the store, but it said I already purchased the movie and instructed me to check the downloads.  There is no SD download pending and a check for new downloads was fruitless.
Can someone confirm that the original iPad is unable to play HD video?  I imagine it is the 1080p that's the problem.  Can anyone confirm that 720p would work?  Is there no longer a means to get both HD and SD when purchasing a movie from the iTunes store?  If there is, how?
    Thanks for your help.
    Jamie

You can get the SD or 720p version by:
    Open iTunes 11
Click iTunes in menu bar > select Preferences...
    Click on the Store tab
Change When downloading High Definition videos, prefer dropdown to 720p > click OK
Click on the iTunes Store button
    Click Purchased link
    Click Movies tab
You should now see a download icon for the movies you already have 1080p version of.
Click on this download icon to download the 720p version.
This will put a 720p version in the same folder on your hard drive as the 1080p version.  If you have iTunes setup to play 1080p when available, it will play the 1080p version.  When you connect your iPad 1, it will sync the 720p version.
Don't forget to change your preference back to 1080p so you can continue to get the higher quality version.
