Organizing Music in "All Songs" View

Hey I'm wondering if there's a way to organize my music on my iPod when I'm in the "All Songs" view, under a specific artist. For instance, say I wanted to play a band's entire catalog, each album front to back, without having to switch to another album after each finished. As it is, when I go to all of the songs by a band, they're arranged by name. I also feel I should mention I'm using an iPod Touch 4th gen.
I hope I'm being clear in my inquiry.

you cant because when you click artist and all songs it is all the albums moxed together in alphabetical order and you cant change that the only way is to pick an album in the artist and then when done go back and pick another one

  • Music list in songs view always goes back to top...

In previous versions of iTunes, when swapping between playlists (or building them, for example), every time you went back to the music folder in the library, you get back to where you left off.
Now, it seems that if you switch out of the Music folder in iTunes 11, it "loses" its place, and always goes back to the top of the list.  It's a pain to have to scroll down to where you were especially if there are several thousand songs to wade through) every time you switch in and out of the Music folder.
Is there a way to go back to where you left off, like in previous versions?  I'm not sure using the column browser helps with this if you're building a playlist that spans artists and genres...

It seems to happen in all the other views as well. Very annoying. Please post if you find a solution for this!

  • Music missing, all songs display could not be used because the original file could not be found.

I have a 2010 MacBook.  Recently seem to have lost all of my iTunes music.  On any song I select and try to play, I get a message that "The song could not be used because the original file could not be found." and asks if I want to locate it.  Have not successfully "located" any after several attempts.  Any ideas??

Your media files should be located in the Media folder in the iTunes folder on your main hard drive. If you are using a different configuration it helps to state this when asking a question.  Are your media files indeed still present in this folder?  If they are, that's the path you need to follow when iTunes asks you to find a file.  If they are not, and a Spotlight search does not find them on your computer anywhere, then something strange is happening.  You either slipped up somewhere in moving files, or something slipped up on your computer and you will need to restore your iTunes folder from your backup.
Getting broken links like that suddenly is not normal. iTunes is very fussy about you making any changes yourself directly to files and folders inside the iTunes folder.

It would be nice if you told others the steps you've tried and/or how you used to have your setup.
Anyway have you tried tapping MORE this will then bring you to
the selection-list of Audiobooks, Genres, Compilations & Composers.
Selecting Genres gives you a list of all your music split into genres which was set within the Music downloaded via iTunes or uploaded from CD or which you may have set yourself.
Then you just select the Genre you want:
If certent songs are not correctly gategorised you may need to go into iTunes and reselect via Get-info
    >Info>Genre and change it there. That way you should end up with all songs of Jazz or other in 1 place.

  • Alphabetical sorting of Music Artists [Name of Artist] All Songs?

When I go to Music>Artists>[Name of Artist]>All Songs, it sorts the songs by album, is there a way to have this sorted alphabetically instead, without regard to album? Basically I want a way to view an alphabetical list of songs by a certain artist without making a million playlists. This would only apply to Music>Artists>[Artist]>All Songs, I want everything else to stay as is. This is for a current gen Ipod Classic. Also, would doing this (if it's even possible) mess up the sorting of artists who I only have one album for (I would want these to stay sorted by track number)?

Regarding the playlists, just click on the NAME column within each playlist to sort the list by name. Make sure the shuffle icon is not selected before you do this. Your playlists will be in Track Name order now. (You must do this for EACH playlist)
I believe when choosing an individual artist, then choosing all albums by that artist, the tracks will be sorted by album name then track number per album, so the ALBUMS will be played in alphabetical order, but the songs will play in the track order of each album. There is no way to chage this, as far as I know.
There may be a workaround for this by removing all the track numbers from all of your files. However, this will mess up your album order if you ever wish to listen to individual albums.
To each his own, I know, but hearing all songs in alphabetical order drives me insane.

  • Smart playlist on iphone doesn't display all songs in "list" view

So first, how I organize my mp3s, so you understand how I do things.
I have one "main" smart playlist that I use. It's only rule is to only include songs that are a part of a certain album.
I then edit every song I want in that playlist to be in that album.
In iTunes, this playlist has 136 songs. When I sync, ALL of them transfer, and ALL of them are on the phone.
When I play the playlist on the phone, ALL of them do play. I can cycle through all 136 of them.
My problem is this: When I enter the "playlist view" (I dont know what it's called, but THIS view: http://i.imgur.com/z4ZIK.jpg ), not all songs display anymore. I used to have all 136 songs displaying, and I could scroll to any of them to play. Now, its split up in chunks. What I mean by that is, maybe 20 songs are displayed, and if the playlist random shuffles to a song in the playlist but NOT part of that 20, that song may be a part of, say, 6 other songs in the playlist, or it may be solo in that view. All the songs still play, all 136, they're all still on the playlist and shuffle WILL play them all eventually, but they do NOT all appear in this "playlist view" (again, I dont know exactly what its called, but I'm talking about this screen: http://i.imgur.com/z4ZIK.jpg ). There also seems to be no pattern as to what songs are displayed. I have no idea why they're seperated in chunks like this.
Why don't all my 136 songs appear on this screen anymore? I thought maybe the phone or itunes is sorting them differently now, maybe by album art or something, so I made sure ALL songs are COMPLETELY IDENTICAL in terms of info aside from song name and artist name. ALL songs have the same artwork, album, album artist, grouping, composer, comments, they are ALL set to "part of a compliation" (I have also tried setting them all to NOT be part of complilation).
All I want is all 136 songs in my playlist to be displayed on that screen. It used to, but as of maybe a few months ago it started doing this. I'm not sure if I explained the problem correctly but that's the best I can do.

Well, the saga continues (some people must be getting a laugh at me talking to myself).
Turns out my PlayList which was supposed to read...
    - Genre is Ambient
    - Media Kind is Music
    - Last Play is not in the last 60 days
    - Limit to 1 hour selected by random
    - Live Updating
... actually said "- Last Play *is* in the last 60 days"
When I changed that and resync'd it worked, however it still doesn't explain why the two playlists (iTunes and iPod) were totally different.
Oh well.  Thanks for being my shrink for the day and letting me vent.

  • Sort Music-- Artist-- Albums-- All Songs where all songs are alpha order

I have quite a lot of songs on my iPod classic. For example I have 253 Beatles songs alone. When I go to Music-->artist-->songs they are all organized by Album. When I'm driving or even just sitting still this method of organization is just extremely inconvenient. I feel like it can't be that difficult to make it sort "all songs" by alphabetical order. Let me know if it is and if I'm just missing it...

    The layout cannot be customised.

  • I don't understand what's happening with my Music. All the songs that I purchased, that were previously on my phone, now show up a Cloud next to them, but I can't play them. If I touch the Cloud, it turns into a red square but never downloads.

I don't understand what's happening with my Music. All the songs that I purchased, that were previously on my phone, now show up with a Cloud next to them, but I can't play them. If I touch the Cloud, it turns into a red square, acts like it's downloading (which I can see happening in iTunes), but never downloads. The Cloud just stays there.
I've sync'd my phone, I've turned it to "show all music" in Settings, I've drag and dropped the songs/albums onto my phone again. I feel like I've tried everything I've seen recommended, but nothing works.
I've purchased a lot of music from iTunes. It should be there. What's going on?
P.S. Same thing happening with my purchased books. Ugh.

Once you successfully add you iTunes library to iTunes Match, you go to Settings>iTunes & App Store on your iOS device and turn on iTunes Match.  Your iTunes Match library will then appear on your iOS device.

Consolidate your files in the iTunes folder
You can consolidate all the files in your library in the iTunes folder—for example, to make it easier to move your library to a new computer.
Choose File > Library > Organize Library.
Select “Consolidate files.”Files remain in their original locations, and copies are placed in the iTunes folder.
To create folders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, Audiobooks, and so on) inside your iTunes folder, and place all your imported media files in the appropriate folders, select “Reorganize files in the folder ‘iTunes Media.’”
    Locate your iTunes files
    Do either of the following:
Find out where a file is stored: Select the item in iTunes, and choose File > Get Info. The path to the file is shown at the bottom of the Summary pane (next to Where).
Show the file in Windows Explorer: Select the song, and choose File > Show in Explorer.

  • I've purchased several comedy albums on itunes and they're sent to my music file, which I don't like since I like to shuffle all songs. I put the albums in audiobooks but each track is listed seprately instead of by album. Is there a way to fix that?

I've purchased several comedy albums on itunes (or uploaded from my cd collection) and itunes stores them in the music file. I prefer not to have them stored there since I often put my ipod on shuffle all songs and I hate having comedy bits pop up. So I went into "get info" of each track and changed it from music to audiobooks. That transfered everything into audiobooks but when I synched my ipod, I realized that the comedy tracks are all listed individually instead of under their albums. This doesn't work obviously since I want to listen to the album as a whole. I was wondering if there's a way to store my comedy albums in my audiobooks but have them stay in album format. Can anyone help me on this?

Try posting in a more appropriate forum, as this has noting to do with itunes U - the place where University/college/museums post education material.

No. I have quite a few more 16,000, so I don't manually manage. Making playlists for each device makes things much easier to organize. You can create regular lists of essential tracks and smart playlists to automatically catch new content, top rated, most played etc. If you'd done it this way all along configuring a new or restored device would be the work of moments.

If using a Mac, use Migration Assistant to move your iTunes library from old computer to new.  Afterwards you can sync from your new computer to your iPod.
