Organizing music in columns

I can't seem to find a way to list my music by artist, album, then song name. I can move everything to where I want it except for the song name. Am I trying something that can't be done?

Are you talking about adjusting the lateral position of the columns in iTunes? Any column can be moved left or right by dragging except the "Name" column; it always stays at the left.

  • Organizing music btwn  iTunes & Touch 3g

I have my music orginzed a certain way in iTunes and when it's synced with the Touch its not in the same order on the touch.
Example: Newly added songs are in alphabetical order in iTunes on the Touch they are not in alphabetical order under newly added.
Organizing music btwn iTunes & Touch 3g

A known bug in the Touch's 3.1.x OS. The workaround is to edit the smart playlist and add the criteria "Playlist Is Music", where Music is the general folder in your iTunes library for music items. Do that and re-sync, then you'll have what you want.

  • More on Organizing Music on iPod Classic

    Hi,
My iPod is not organizing music in a predictable manner, and I was wondering if anyone has dealt with this issue. I spent hours organizing the iTunes library so that every CD I've imported lists the music according to the parameters: Name (song name, done automatically by iTunes), (ii) Artist (I enter the name of the album artist in this field, such as "Norah Jones"), (iii) Album by Year (I enter the name or title of the CD [e.g. "The Essential Billy Joel"]), (iv) Genre (I created my own genres and placed all of the music into the corresponding genre of my choosing).
Ok, here's what's happening. So far I've imported about 100 CDs with perhaps 35/45 different artists. Since I put the artist's name in the artist field for every CD, one would think that when I click on "Artists" on the iPod (after syncing, of course) I'd have 35/45 different artists to choose from. However, when I click on "Artists" on the iPod I find many missing artists (actually, the greater percentage are missing). For example, I have just about everything by guitarist David Russell (I have 14 CDs in all by him), yet his name doesn't appear in the list of artists unless I click on "Artists" then "All Albums", in which case I have to scroll through my entire collection of albums in alphabetical order by CD title until I find the CD I'm looking for!
An odd thing also happens when I click on "Genres". Let's say that I click on "Genres", and then "Classical Guitar". This takes me to a screen at the top of which is the choice "All Albums", followed by a list of 6 artist's names. Now, I have many more than 6 artists in the classical guitar section, yet only 6 names appear.
There doesn't seem to by any reason for some artists to appear yet others (the majority) not to appear, as I'm organizing every CD in exactly the same way. When I import a CD, I select all songs, right click, select "Get Info", and when the "Multiple Item Information" screen appears, I enter all the information according to parameters already mentioned.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    ~Sean

Usually the biggest culprit of this is if the "Part of a Compilation" box is checked. In iTunes pick a song by David Russell and get info. Check to see if this box is clicked. If it is, that's why it won't show up in the "Artist" menu.

  • Organizing Music in iTunes 7.6.1.9

OK, this may be a simple issue, but it is driving me bonkers. Any help would be appreciated!
I like to have my music organized by Album in my iTunes window. In the older versions, when you sorted by the Album column, it would then sub-sort by track number. For whatever reason, my music now sub-sorts alphabetically by Artist name. Most of the tim, that's ok on 'normal' albums. I have a lot of compilations however, so this throws the track listing well out of order.
How can I get my music sorted by album and then by track number?
    Thanks in advance!

I can see what is going on, this is a multi artist album and when you sort by album, you get Album>Artist>Track number.
Try filling in The album artist field. You can select all the tracks in the album together, then right click get info.
This lets you change the album artist field in all the tracks at once. You need to have the same album artist for all the tracks, the field is not normally displayed unless you choose to select the column for display. I am not sure if it is necessary to flag the album as a compilation as well - you can do this in the multi - Get info window as well.

  • Sharing one organized music folder with different computers

I have one mp3 folder which is organized by itunes running on, lets say, computer 1. the mp3 folder is on the computer 1.
now there is a second computer, computer 2, running itunes and is connected via ethernet.
how can i use itunes on both computers now?
I want to import music on computer 2 and then see the imported files on computer 1 and vice versa.
I see all the files on computer 2, but silly me.. i said computer 2 to also organize the same folder, now computer 1 doesn't find any files any more. how can i fix this elegantly? all the files are still in the very same place, but itunes on computer 1 doesn't find them.
    thanks for some help!

please let me know if this is an impossible thing for itunes or not.
if it is not then i don't know the key word or the name of the function.

  • IPod versus iTunes, organizing music

I spent 2 hours last night organizing my music that had featuring artists so it would show up under the album it belongs to, versus being its own separate "album"... so I assumed that if iTunes was perfectly organized and the music is listed as it should be, that it would translate to my iPod... NOPE! How is that possible? How do you get your albums, no matter how many contributing artists, in one place on your iPod, when it's already like that in iTunes?
I have no clue what to do, and it is soooo frustrating!

If this is a Compilation album, one with varying artists in the Artist field for different songs on the same album, you need to do the following:
1- Select all songs on the album and go to Get Info.
2- Enter the same +Album Artist+ for each song. If there is no common artist among the songs, use something like "Various Artists".
3- Go to the Options tab and change "Part of a Compilation" to Yes.
4- Make sure that the total number of disks is the same for all songs.
    5- Re-sync your iPod.
Also, in iTunes you can sort your library as "+Album by Artist+", which will group compilations together according to what you've used for +Album Artist+.

  • Organizing music in iTunes

    Hello-
I apologize if this question has been posted in the past, but I'm having a difficult time successfully searching the thousands of threads here.
I am a new iPod owner (80gb) and am trying to organize my music. I am running Windows XP and have my mp3s organized exactly as I'd like them on an external hard drive. My problem is that I cannot figure out how to get iTunes to import and organize them the same way.
An example of how my music is organized (in Windows Explorer on my hard drive) is as follows:
    <folder> mp3s
    --<folder> classical
    ----<folder> bach
    ------*files
    ------*Winamp playlist(s)
    ------*subfolders
    ----<folder> beethoven
    ------*files
    ------*subfolders
    ------*subfolders within subfolders
    ----<folder> brahms
    --<folder> jazz
    ----<folder> charlie parker
    ------*files
    ------*Winamp playlist(s)
    ------*subfolders
    ----<folder> miles davis
Any suggestions on how to successfully make my iTunes library look like my Windows Explorer library would be much appreciated. I've spent considerable time in the past organizing my files and playlists into Windows folders/subfolders and would like to avoid re-learning how to re-organize everything in iTunes.
    Thank you!

No, iTunes cannot do as you want.
It organizes on the drive by Artist -> Album.
But everything is done in iTunes. so how/where it is stored on the drive is pretty much irrelevant.
You can maintain your own structure in one of two ways.
    1
    iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Uncheck Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library.
File -> Add folder to library and start adding yoru folders. They will go into iTunes but willstay where they are. iTunes will not copy them into the iTunes music folder.
    2
    iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Uncheck Keep iTunes music folder organized.
Drag your music folders into the iTunes music folder.
File -> Add Folder to library and select these folders.
iTunes will keep the directory structure as it is and simply add them the library.
If you later tick Keep iTunes music folder organized, it will move and rename everything according to the ID3 tags into Artis -> Album folders.
Note that iTunes playlists are not saved as a separate file like WinAmp or WMP. They are part of the iTunes library file.

  • ITunes organizing music into two totally separate places

I've been using iTunes for as long as I can remember, and ever since I picked up an external hard drive, I've been backing up my music constantly. I noticed a year ago or so that my music had been split into two separate places for no apparent reason.
My music is currently in these two places:
    iTunes Media >> Music
    and
    iTunes Media
Why? I have no clue. I don't know how it got that way, and I don't know why a program would ever organize music in such a way.
The worst part: My CDs are split across these two folders. For example, the album "Strawberry Jam" by Animal Collective is split across these two places (tracks 1-4 are in iTunes Media, tracks 5-9 are in iTunes Media >> Music).
I don't know about anyone else, but I find this incredibly frustrating as I want all my music from one artist in ONE FOLDER, not split across two directories.
Any idea on how I can fix this and keep iTunes from splitting my music up in the future? I'm rather ticked off right now as I just deleted a bunch of things only to find out that half of the CD is still floating around in the other folder. I really don't want to go through my entire 140+gb library, move each album individually, and then re-load it all into iTunes.

I'm not certain I've understood what you would like to do. From my own experience, I find that it's easier to work with playlists. Before importing a new CD, I create a new playlist into which I import the CD tracts. Then I edit the track information: name, sort name, composer, album, album artist, etc to insure uniformity and correct track sequence and organization. Within a playlist, I select the first track, then go to "get info", and click on the "sorting" tab. In that tab there are 2 columns one for the display information and one for sorting information. Because I use an iPhone and an iPad where display space is limited, I label the tracts as follows:
Beethoven: Symphony #1 C 1-Adagio Molto, Allegro Con Brio
Beethoven: Symphony #1 C 2-Andante Cantabile Con Moto
    Beethoven: Symphony #1 C 3-Menuetto: Allegro Molto E Vivace
Beethoven: Symphony #1 C 4-Finale: Adagio, Allegro Molto E Vivace
For the "sort name" I use simply "Beethoven: Symphony #1-1" etc.
I have all of Beethoven symphonies in one playlist, each set by a different orchestra & conductor in a different playlist.

  • ITunes organizing music does not work and deletes my files

When I have checked box nex to where it said something like : keed folder organized, scince i have so much music, it decided to move my music into compilations folder it had created by itself. After wards i was moving files from compilations folder to artist music belonged to. Little while later it decided to move all my music to the trash. And scince trash doesn't hold everything, it deleted 95% of my music. iTunes decides also to create and decide where to put music by itself, moves half to under artist name half somewhere else. Just to let apple people know, next time I'll get an mp3 player, but rather go with Zune or something, so I wouldn't have to use iTunes

  • ITunes stopped organizing music folder

I have iTunes set to organize music. All of a sudden, when I put a tune into the music folder and click it, it appears in iTunes and plays, but a new folder is not created and it stays in the main folder. In the Preferences screen, Advanced, General tab, the box next to Keep iTunes folder organized is checked.
How can I get it to resume organizing?

  • Organizing Music. on my iPod

On my computer I have all my music in Folders & SubFolders:
    Artist
    -Album 1964
    -Album 1965
    -Album 1966
After I go into the Folder(Artist) I can then go into any SubFolder(Album).
Sounds simple enough and works really well on my computer.
When I load this same File Structure onto my 80GB Video iPod(Manual/using the iPod as a HardDrive-No Syncing w/iTunes) this File Structure is ignored. All of a sudden I have some Folders that are without the parent Artist Folder.
Also... sometimes they tend to break apart and look like:
    Artist
    Artist w/Artist 2
    Artist feat/Artist3
    Artist w/Artist 2 feat/Artist 3
I imagine that it has to do with the iPod trying to organize my files by using the ID tags of the files.
I do realize that I can choose to sort by Artist, Album, Genre, etc. I usually look for music based on the Artist. From there I then open the Album. Rarely do I ever Sort/Search using any of the other options.
I prefer my Folder/SubFolder Structure. I like my Music to stay organized the way I organize it. I do Not like for them to be automatically organized by my iPod.
How can I have my iPod display my Files/Music the way I load them onto it and stop reorganizing my shizzle?

The breaking apart thing with featured artists can be fixed by turning on compilations option.
This didn't work just by turning ON this option. Maybe I have to turn ON this option, then load my iPod?
How are you getting these files onto the iPod?
I am using the iPod like a HardDrive. (so I can connect to the many PC's & Mac's I use without Syncing to any of them)
I am Dragging & Dropping the files/folders from my Computer to my iPod in MAUNUAL Mode.
I have also tried XPlay by MediaFour.
On my computer they are organized by ARTIST then ALBUM.
It really gets screwy when the ARTIST does a song with another ARTIST.
    - I want my music to stay the way I have it organized on my computer... regardless of the ID3 tags. <-- Is this possible?

  • Organizing music in ITunes by pre-existing folders in Windows

    Hello,
I'm a brand new user of Itunes, Just got an Ipod Touch for my new car stereo (Pioneer Avic Z110bt) which has a great interface for ipods. I have until now strictly used a program called Winamp to play all my music and I love it. I have organized all my music into folders based on Mood (Relaxing, Popular, Heavy Metal, Depressing, Psyched). Is there anyway to keep this organization in ITunes? I never listen to music by artist or genre. I know I could create playlists of all the folders I have created but that would take forever, unless I'm just missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Awesome the playlist idea worked very well, I just removed all my music from the main directory and just made playlists, that way no increased space taken up for no reason on my harddrive and no additional unwanted folders Thank you!
