Organizing Music / Play Lists / Folders

I have tried looking for the answer to my question in the iTunes forum search engine without much luck what so ever. But I am trying to organize my music and music video library in classifications putting together each form of music or music video into it's own catagory. For example putting rock into a rock catagory, blues into blues, and country into country or just organize different songs corisponding to a particular artist. Are these created through play lists and folders? How Can I do this? Thanks. Please Help.

Look in iTunes Help and learn how to set the "genre" for each item.
Once the genre is correctly populated, you can use it to sort, to search, or to set up playlists.

Which version of iTunes and which iPod Classic model are you using?

I cannot get playlists on an I-Phone 4s or my I pad air-Went to 4s music-more and there is no shared choice. Play list are fine on PC and titles transfer but no content.

hello all,
i have a 4gb iphone that i bought in july. since updating to 1.1.3 i am unable to sync contacts and calendar. i have tried turning phone off and on, ejecting, unplugging, repluggin, and even a full restore, still am unable to sync my contacts and calendar. anyone haveing a similar problem? any help would greatly appreciated, thank you for your time

I, too, have this problem since updating my 8GB iPhone to 1.1.3. I primarily sync my iPhone with my Tiger-running Powerbook G4, where my calendars, contacts, and music files are.However, I followed your direction of resetting iSync, and it did not work. I, then, plugged my iPhone into my Tiger-running MacBook Pro and it worked (and I did not reset iSync). Maybe this problem is due to Intel vs. PowerPC?
We need to alert Apple. I have to go get this figured out for me... I will be visiting the Genius Bar this weekend because I can't be syncing my contacts, and such, on my MacBook Pro 24/7.

I can't organize in play list

I have the latest iTunes and when I put audio books in a playlist it will not keep the chapter nombers in order. It puts all the 1s, then the 2s and so on. It will not go from 9 to 10. It will not let me drag them around to reorganize them. In music play lists I can drag them around.

When you click on artist or title or track number or...whatever it overrides the actual play order in preference for what you told it to do. As you have seen, you can go back to the default by clicking that first column.
Glad it was a simple fix, I got a new coffee roaster and am way to hopped up on caffeine to think clearly for the more complicated issues

Music plays wrong song

On the new iPad, my music play list, I'll tap a song but a different random one will play. Already restarted. One time I deleted all songs and reloaded them, that worked for a while. Suggestions?

So I turned off shuffle and that did it! But you would think, even with shuffle on it would play the first song as you select it and then shuffle after, like iPhone does. Oh well.

Request for - Folders for Play Lists (GUI improvement)

This is a serious request for Apple to make one simple improvement on it's iTunes user interface:
Please give us the ability to make folders of play lists.

iTunes has a beautiful interface. The one thing that is missing is that it is impossible to organize play lists. If Apple would allow us to create folders in the "Play Lists" side bar iTunes user interface would be perfect!
iPods and CDs already open like folders. I am asking for the ability to create our own folders that would open and close in the same way. These folders could store play lists in them like web browsers allow users to organize favorites.
Audiophiles like my self often put together large numbers of play lists. iTunes is great for organizing songs but if a user has a lot of play lists, they just line up in a huge row on the left side bar. This list can become painfully long and difficult to search through just like albums worth of songs dumped into the same list.
To the people at Apple, please consider this improvement to iTunes to help it continue to be the premiere music program for organizing our "digital life style."

iTunes already has folders - just go to the top menu, and from 'File' choose 'New Folder' a folder will appear in your playlist window - you can now drag any playlists to it.

Can not See All of my Music Library on the play list

I accidently moved my music library (My documents/My music/my itunes...)
When I moved it back, iTunes does not see all the song (over 2000). It only see the purchased music. I can use the Add to Library function (In the File menu) and add each song, song by song and I have added a few dozen songs back to the play list. So all the music is there, in the directory, Just can not get iTunes to recogize them.
ANY suggestions to adding the whole library back at once.

Do you at least have the little ! (exclamation point) next to the "missing" songs?
I just had the same thing happen to me, but mine occurred simply by upgrading to the latest version of iTunes... in the process it "lost" about half of my music.
I simply unchecked "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" under prefrences/advanced tab.. hit "OK", then went back in and re-checked it, hit OK and iTunes began "organizing" my library and miraculously iTunes found all of the missing music.
There are some decent articles about moving your iTunes library on the support site. They don't always work as advertised, but you're pretty much stuck with My Documents/My Music/iTunes on Windows.
You may be able to reverse things by following those instructions as well.

Any ideas?? - unfortunatly apple support isn't available on a Sunday. I have just sync my iphone and it has erased all the music in my play lists, both on the phone and in Itunes (under the device drop down). My purchases are all still visible but it won't allow me to drag any music into any playlists or sub folders to recreate them.

Scott was a big help, in that he helped me resolve this under: "Startup disk almost full. What do I do now?" So I'm giving credit to Scott here for his help which ultimately answered this question. (SuperDuper! worked great and I got everything back; iTunes purchased music, addresses, everything, thank God!)

When I purchased icloud and it synced up with my playlist it just chose what it wanted and rearranged my entire playlist and left off a lot of my music and rearranged the play list unlike anything I had on my iphone 5 before it upgraded to ios7???

when I upgraded to ios 7.2.0 it would not sync my music playlist correctly.
Advised my Apple to pay for suscription to Imatch/ Icloud it rearranged my play list so they are not even close to what they were
Icloud made the decision on which ones it would upload and completely deleted all it did not like( LOTS and LOTS of my music) any help would be appreciated because Apple just does not want to get involved in their created events whats so ever at all!!!!!! thanking anyone in advance for any help. hi i had the same problem today when i updated my itunes to latest version. however, i have just found my songs in the 'itunes media' folder. this was accessed through 'my music' then keep clicking through until you find itunes media and all my library songs were in there and i then just added these files to my library and all were restored however, i have lost all my playlists but at least my 700 songs are back. very dissapointed with apple that they have let this happen with their latest update, the previous version was miles better than this one . hope you find them. stevo

Try opening iTunes preferences. Then click on advanced tab. Then uncheck "Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library." By default, iTunes copies music to its own media folder when you use iTunes to play the music.

How to Sort music on play list by FILE NAME?

iTunes doesn't display the filename or filepath as a column so you can't sort on it. I could write a script to copy the filepath into the Sort Name field so that sorting by name would sort by filepath. Would that help? In normal circumstances however filepath order would be the same as Album by Artist, so I'm not sure what you would gain. Perhaps there is another way to approach whatever problem you think sorting by filename would solve.
