Organizing Pages/States in Flash Catalyst

Hi,
is there a way to reorder the Pages/States in Flash Catalyst?
I wonder why Adobe created a whole new Programm for such less features, at least visually seen.
It would be so great if they simply would integrate the code creating feature in FIREWORKS
There we have all that much more advanced states/pages handling...
Just a idea
Cheers
Marc

  • Why Kill of Flash Catalyst, especially when it works well?

    Flash Catalyst
I skin components via an Illustrator files (also psds) received by designers. The joy of skinning and making sure the components are rasterized for performance, and having a stage to edit components and reskin them is wonderful! I adore Flash Catalyst.
    Apache Flex
Now with the Flex going to Apache, the white paper states that Flash Catalyst will actually be "Removed" from future Flex releases - This baffles me!
    I quote the White Paper:
Flash Catalyst CS5.5 is the last release of Flash Catalyst. At this time, it will not be updated to work with Flex SDK 4.6 (even though it does?!) or any Apache Flex releases nor will it be included in future versions of the Adobe Creative Suite software offerings.
Flash Catalyst workflows will be removed in updated 4.x versions of Flash Builder. - That is a Crime!
I would like to ask, if it is possible to stick with Flash Builder 4.6 (which works with Flash Catalyst 5.5), and continue to develop with these two tools, and no matter what Flash Player (even future ones) users have - would still render?
The idea of killing off something that works so well (if you know how/when to use it), and so enjoyable to work in, angers me!!

You can find the answer. Just modify some config file.
    http://chrisgriffith.wordpress.com/2011/12/05/flash-catalyst-cs5-5-and-flash-builder-4-6/
In Applications/Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5.5/plugins/com.adobe.flexbuilder.flex_1.5.0.308731/config.xml add in a reference to 4.6. You’ll need to copy 4.6 into the sdk directory. When you publish it will publish with the 4.6 SDK. Still haven’t figured out how to add new components to the components panel or change the theme (mobile) (or add new Interactions…) You can export this project and import it into FB. Going the opposite way is a bit more trouble. You’ll get an error about the supported SDK’s. You may need to update the hidden project files to “4.5″ instead of “4.6″ which may allow you to import it again… There’s more you can update… search for plugin.xml in the plugins directory.

  • Flash Catalyst - solutions to the 20 states limitation

Oops!! I accidentally marked this question as "Assumed answered".
I have not got any respons yet and am very anxious to hear about a solution to my problem.

    Hi everybody
I have created an interactivew project in Flash Catalyst, however, just as I am about to add the final states to the project, I am told that I am limited to 20 states. Apparently I have exceeded that number and cannot finish my project, which has taken me hours to create.
The help file tells me that the way around the limitation is to encapsulate components. Unfortunately, there are no concrete examples of how to do that.
If someone can help me out here, I shall be very grateful.
    Yours

    Hi again
I realize that it is difficult to help me unlless I'm more specific as to my project.
The project has a main window with a vertical menu with 10 buttons which displays in every state and opens with an application transition:
I have an 'on click' interaction on each of the buttons, which transitions the user to "contents 1" on a page with a scrolling bar component, using a flex component from the common library:
The button in the lower right corner brings the user to a scrolling panel sub page:
The button in the lower right corner opens a pdf document to allow the reader to print the subject.
This is the structure for all 10 buttons in the vertical navigation bar.
Futhermore, I have animated background boxes coming in from the bottom on the scroplling panel pages.
I was not aware of the 20 states limitation before I started the project and am hoping that I can still save the project by finding a work around that will allow me to fit all my items and their contents into the existing structure, some magic recipe ;0)
If this is not possible, I am hoping that someone can instruct me on how to design the structure to avoid the problem next time around.
Any help will be VERY MUCH APPRICIATED.
By the way, I think Adobe should definitely introduce the states limitation at an early point in their tutorials, so that it does not come as a nasty surprise when it is too late. I have watched all the adobe video tutorials and there is no mention of this limitation.
I hope that they will bring a video tutorial on how to work your way around it, with step by step examples, as soon as possible.

    Hi Chris
I don't mind sharing my project at all and will be very grateful if, if you would tke a look at it.
How do I make the fxp file accessible here in disacussion forum. I cannot find any insert/upload file option in this editor.
    Best regards

    Hi again
I have now uploaded the original project, where I ran out of states, and the edited project where I tried to use custom components with states for item one's subpages.
I sincerely hope that you can tell me how to go beyond the 20 states, since the success of my undertaking is utterly dependent on this.

  • Did Adobe drop Fireworks support from Flash Catalyst Beta?

    Hi all,
I'm a UI designer and am naturally very excited about Thermo / Flast Catalyst. I just rushed to download the beta but was dismayed to see that Flash Catalyst does not properly import Fireworks (CS4) files -- i.e. they were imported as a giant image instead of pages/layers/objects. Was this functionality dropped in just the beta, or is this something that product will lose in production too.
Fireworks has always felt forgotten by the Adobe team (buggy, buggy, buggy) -- I hope this isn't another instance of that happening.

If Adobe finally decides to use part of Fireworks's ".PNG" engine, they shouldn't have to introduce .FXG into the Fireworks product line, since the onus is on Flash Catalyst to port Fireworks, not the other way around.
Using the Fireworks engine, features such as "Pages", or perhaps even Fireworks's "States", would allow for more seamless “.PNG” porting into Catalyst. Also, doing so, would eliminate all those steps one has to take to merely generate states within Catalyst—saving UI designers time by giving them the option to simply make adjustments to the Catalyst timeline. Not only is this faster, but it makes more logical sense!
Ahh...I am beginning to think Adobe’s in over their heads with this one.

  • FAQ: Are there best practices for building projects within the 20 page/state limit?

The 20 page/state limit in Flash Catalyst is there to prevent Catalyst (and your finished application) from running slowly. You can however build efficient applications that have more than 20 states by using custom components. Custom components can contain states as well; so by creating an app that has several states, and using custom components that have states, you can get more unique views of your app while keeping it efficiently built.
    Try this:
    1. Select some of your arwork where you need more states. Right click and choose "Convert to Custom Component"
    2. Double-click to edit the custom component. Note that you can now create states in the custom component. Try creating a few states here.
    3. To exit editing the component, double click a blank area on the artboard.
    4. If you try creating an "On click transition to state" interaction now you will see that you can choose from both the states of the application as well as the states of the custom component.

If you have several top-level pages in your app that are completely different than other pages (for example, they don't share any objects with the other states) than pushing these down into a custom component makes things a lot more manageable in Catalyst. The layers panel, for example, shows all objects across all states-- this is useful when your states share many objects. If however, your states don't share a lot of objects, the layers panel can get a bit unmanageable. Refactoring into a custom component allows you to fix this by grouping content into a container.

  • Can't See Pages/States. Only States.

I have created some artwork in Illustrator CS5 to import into FC and after doing so, I notice that I do not have Pages/States, only States. I believe that this is hindering me to make my buttons function properly. I will go into more detail just in case there may be another problem.
I import my Illustrator artwork into FC. I have my layers named very well with one for my background, my buttons, my logo, and my content. I copy the original state and rename each state to match my buttons, i.e., Home, Gallery, About, Contact. When I convert my buttons, which are vectors, to the button component, I set the up, over, down, and disabled state. The problem is, is that it changes on every state, which I believe should be pages, and I cannot differentiate the buttons between the states. In other words, if I change it on one state, whether it be Home, Gallery, About, or Contact, it changes on all of them. Another mystery is that when I go to "Add Interaction" and set one of the buttons to "play transition to state", when I choose "target" to select the state, there are no states to select. I have to select "Application" and then choose the appropriate state, as if it is an application.
I hope that this makes sense. Please let me know if you need additional information and thank you in advance for your help. This is frustrating.

Under the hood, Flash Catalyst has marked your button to be the same in all the states. If I understand you problem correctly, you need to clone your button to look and have different interactions on each of your application's main states. One quick way to do this is on each of the other states, select the button, then simply Cut and re-paste it. This will create a new instance of the button that is independent from the others. Then you are free to change it without affecting the other 'like' buttons on the other states.

  • Remote Rollover in Flash Catalyst

    Hi there,
I am trying to figure out how to make a remote rollover button in flash catalyst. I have one graphic, when the mouse rolls over one part of that graphic, text should appear next to it...while rolling off the graphic, the text should disappear again. Once the button is clicked, the graphic should move to the edge of the page and new text should appear.  Is this possible in Flash catalyst? I could not find anything...
    Your input is greatly appreciated

You can do this through states (called Pages/States in CS5, just States in Panini. I'm going to refer to it as just States here.)
You're best bet here would be to convert the graphic to a custom component by selecting it and choosing Generic/Custom Component from the HUD. Then, double-click the graphic to edit the component. Then, click the graphic and convert it into a custom component again (so you will have a component within a component.) This is necessary because you need to add an interaction, and you can only do that on components.
Use the States panel to create a duplicate state. In that state, add the text that you want to appear when you roll over the graphic. Go back to the first state, click on the graphic, and use the Interactions panel to create a transition between the states, setting the trigger for the interaction to On Roll Over, the action to Transition to State, the state to your second state, and the When In State to your first state. Repeat this process in your second state, but set the trigger to On Roll Out, the action to Transition to State, the state to your first state, and the When In State to your second state.
Now, go back up to the States panel, click on the second state, and again click Duplicate State. In this new third state, move the graphic to the desired final location, and make any necessary changes to the text. Then, repeat the steps outlined in the prior paragraph to create an On Click interaction to transition to this state. Be sure to set the When In State option to Any State this time.

  • After Flash Catalyst discontinued - What Workflow Designer / Developper to use? and how skin compone

    Hi,
Now  that Flash Catalyst is discontinued before being totally usable,
I used Flash Catalyst for skinning components and prototyping design of App.
So i wonder how experienced people do that without Flash Catalyst?
And more im asking to Adobe the same questions. What do you propose to do now what Flash catalyst helped to do until now?
    how do you skin components?
how do you work with designers to get their App Pages designs?
in a word, what is the WorkFlow?
    Thanks

I couldn't agree more with you that developers need a solid WYSIWYG tool, and Catalyst was Adobe's closest rival to Blend. It had much more potential than the amount of attention it received. Adobe was very foolish pulling the plug on it, not to mention all their other recent decisions related to the Flash Platform.
My point was that with all of the importing and exporting capabilities of Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash Professional, and especially Fireworks, you already have all of the capabilities of Flash Catalyst, at least in regards to making creative assets available to the Flex framework. That was the sole purpose of Catalyst- to bridge the gap between Adobe's design applications and Flex. If you weren't concerned with Flex, Flash Catalyst would be of no use, even if it were still in development. Exporting a Catalyst project to Flash Professional or HTML was never on it's roadmap, although I'm sure I'm not the first person who thought of those possibilities.
Catalyst, simply put, was the FXG editor which Flash Builder's design mode was not. For example, you could not draw a rectangle using Builder's design mode. With Catalyst CS5.5, it allowed you to directly assign FXG assets to MXML skins for ten of the nineteen Spark components which use the MXML skin architecture. This was a huge limitition, and espeically obvious with the new roundtripping feature, because using any of the non-supported components could easily break the connection between Builder & Catalyst. Honestly, myself and many of the Adobe engineers I talked to on the Flash Builder team, still do not understand why Catalyst wasn't merged into Flash Builder in the first place.
Perhaps it's not as useful out of context, but I compiled a presentation a few months ago for my Adobe user group, titled "Creative & Production Harmony": https://acrobat.com/#d=jNyu*qRjpF68tbl*8lCiTw&x=s
Basically what it outlined, was when to use Catalyst, and when you are better off exporting straight from the other design apps. My conclusion, was that you're generally better off designing your assets in the app you're comfortable with. That IS your WYSIWYG editor, to the precision of 1px. It was also a future proof answer since Catalyst was discontinued and many of the other Flex related workflows have evaporated. The main loss behind discontinuing Catalyst, were its states, timeline, and visual editing of FXG less commonly preserved when exporting from the other apps.
A workflow example for a project I recently used Catalyst with, http://disneycruiseadventure.com/ was to open the PSD provided inside of Photoshop, launch Catalyst, draw a shape (or copy/paste in a vector smart object from Illustrator), and use it's properties panel to match the Photoshop layer styles. This basically the climax of the day, because the rest of it was all spent manually editing code in Builder (and often fixing a lot of the crap code Catalyst spit out). For advanced use of graphics, we relied heavily on the Flex Component Kit, which basically lets you work with any MovieClip inside of Flex or even insert Flex components into a Flash Professional container. The integration between Flex & Flash Pro is most commonly overlooked, which is sad because it still offers the very most design freedom for Flex and has been around long before Catalyst.
In my personal project, my workflow heavily involves Fireworks. It's exporting capabilities are unparralled by any of the other Adobe design apps. You can design with the 1px precision you are after, and almost always preserve that precision after exporting to Flex 3, FXG, and even CSS. Speaking of CSS, now you can export to CSS3 and jQuery mobile themes using Fireworks. If I had a choice between Fireworks and Catalyst, I would take Fireworks without any question. If you're looking for another workflow, consider the idea of taking HTML/CSS exported by Fireworks and opening it inside of Adobe Edge for adding animation and interactivity. Then do your final editing with Dreamweaver, or skip the Edge step if you don't need it.

  • Flash vs Flash Catalyst

Could someone tell me the difference between these two application? Could I use either to create SWF flipbooks?

You can think of Flash Catalyst as a front-end for Flash Builder; it lets you lay out a project in Photoshop or Illustrator, import it into Flash Builder, and by assigning button and contents to states, make a Flex project.  Flex is alternative, component-based way of creating SWF files, based on XML and ActionScript.  You use Flash Builder (called Flex Builder before CS4) to manipulate the XML file that controls your project.  Like Dreamweaver, it has a design view and a code view.
Flash is the traditional authoring tool for SWF files.  It is timeline based, and traditionally you build your project in a design window.  However, you can also use ActionScript with Flash, and it has faciliites for editing ActionScript files.  Thus you can lay out your project graphically, but still have ActionScript code interact with the design elements.
They are sort of two different ways of doing the same thing, and it sort of depends on your perspective.  If you like designing your whole project in Illustrator or Photoshop first, and then adding animation, Flash Catalyst and Flash Builder is probably the easiest way to go.  If you like building your project in Flash, and pulling in elements made previously in Photoshop or Illustrator, Flash might be best, especially if you are used to working with animation timelines.
You could make flip books either way.  With Flash Catalyst/Flash Builder, you would make your book with each page on a separate layer, with separate layers for "next" and "previous" buttons.  Then you would import your PSD into Flash Catalyst, and assign each page layer to a different state.  Then you would save this as an FXP file, and import it to Flash Builder to create your SWF file.
With Flash, you could bring import the same PSD, and assign each page layer to a different frame on the timeline, and use the buttons to move between frames.
But I would recommend that you do neither of these.  I would recommend composing your flip book in InDesign, which has an SWF flipbook export option.  Especially if your flipbook is designed like a book, with text and pictures (rather than just being a stack of images, for example), InDesign is set up for designing that sort of thing, much more so than the other products.  Certainly you can do fancier animation sort of things with Flash or Flash Builder, but if you just need to flip between pages, InDesign is the way to go.
(And there's actually another option: you can design your book in InDesign and export it as an XFL file, which you can then import into Flash if you need to add fancier animations. )
    Hope this helps,

  • My top ten requested features for Flash Catalyst Next

Here is my top ten list of requested features for Flash Catalyst:
    10. Rearranging of pages / states in the pages / states panel (also resizing to smaller icons)
    9. Menu bar option to Insert Custom / Generic Component. There isn't a  way to create a custom component without first adding something to stage  and then converting that.
    8.  Edit component on double click in layers panel
    7. Replace existing artwork with library component - for example, when you create a button or text input then you should be able to use that skin in all of the text input instances rather than creating new ones every time you choose convert artwork to component
    6. Artboard sized to content - no hardcoded size of the project
    5. Import of Flex Components / movieclps
    4. Flex Capacitor library integration / support - supports deep  linking and navigation through your flash catalyst or flex project  without coding - all the work is done
    3. Integration and coexistence in native Flex project - no fxpl or zip - flat file structure
    2. Container support - VGroup HGroup Skinnable Container - set layout property
    1. Component Constraints support - top left bottom right horizontal center vertical center baseline width height 100%

    Additional features:
    • When opening a Illustrator file the option to choose which artboard or layers to import (rather than the whole project).
    • Set a default option so that all imported text fields from Illustrator use "Fit Height". Mainly because currently it is cutting off the descent but also bc it allows you to change the text content (globalization) and have the text fit.
    • Show intersection lines while dragging. At least vertical center and horizontal center... similar to Flex and Illustrator.
    • Add a convert to vector when selecting images.
    • In the code view the default directory "components" could be renamed to something like: design, compositions, construction, architecture, form, embodiments, chassis, constitution, frame, representation, manifestation, cast, expression, mold, etc. just not skins. design, chassis, representations, cast, expressions, compositions are my favorites. It would be nice to be able to define this folder path in preferences.
    • Use the layer name to name the library components. Otherwise there is a directory with 30 assets named "graphic[n]".
    • Command to clean out library of unused symbols.

  • Good information for anyone using Flash Catalyst CS5 !!!

I am using FC_CS5 and I am a huge fan and can not wait for the next version to come out. I have already maxed out the potential of this program and I have noticed many other people having the same problem that I had when it comes to not being able to create any more than 20 different states or 20 different pages.
The way around this is simply to design your project within AI CS5, Fireworks CS5, Photoshop CS5. I started my project out in Illustrator CS5 simply because Flash catalyst will recognize your layers and your individual artboards and will lay them out for you in your Catalyst project. This is the great part!!!
You can't  create new or duplicate anything over 20 states from within Catalyst but you can create a large amount of artboards or in catalyst terms, "states", thus allowing you to get by the restriction within catalyst.
My project has about 45 different artboards. I created a few extra artboards incase the client wanted to add some stuff later on. I create a catalyst project from my AI project and now I have 45 different states.
I hope this will help anyone who is using Flash Catalyst and I can't wait for the adobe crew to fix this issue allow for more than 20 states in the future and I better not find out that the adobe crew stops the "work around" I described above!

    OH man it's precious.
Do you have any insight into my imported swf problem?
I have just now updated dw and fc and redone the process (heard imported swfs was easier on the beta version) don't know why I can't manage my assets, or what I did wrong in one instance, but correctly in the other.  (see the animation on the LW corner).
The help files really need to be developed in this area, I guess..
two versions, testing server correct: www.cachetrade.com
Not running swf (with rollover of the yogi on the left): www.desertypalmyoga.com
    Is this a hijack or a top-post?
I really just want to understand the issues so I can plan workflow: really quite powerful, that's why this first design in most b+w (though curious how the color overlays and modes will work... )
    THANKS!

  • Can I export a flash catalyst file to other program?

    hi,
I started to build a web page in flash catalyst, but the problem is I can create only 20 states,
can I export the file or copy the code to other program like flex, flash or somthing else, and continue workinng on it there?

From within Flash Builder you can import your Flash Catalyst .fxp file.  See these help docs for more info:

  • Flash Catalyst to Flash Builder Help

I am recreating a photo album in Flash Catalyst CS5 so that you can click and enlarge pictures on each page. I have buttons on each page to navigate from page to page. I used flash catalyst becasue it seemd simple enough to do this. I am a photogapher and not really up to CODE on actionscript. This will not be on a website, it is intended to run on a local machine in a flash viewer. The problem is that Flash catalyst does not appear to have the ability to create a button that loads a new swf file. Each page I create in Catalyst is its own swif file. So I have a button on each page that the user will click to go to the next page of the album (a new swf file). I have the pages created and working awesome EXCEPT for the button to navigate to another page or load a new swf filis not working. I opened up the project in Flash Builder CS5 to try and ad some code that I found online at various flash help sites but nothing is working. I am in need of some help with this. The album consists of about 50 pages (50 swf files) Any ideas are much appreciated !
    Thanks !
    Tom

    Tom-
My first piece of advice would be to actually do this using HTML/CSS/JS (jQuery). There are some incredible plugins for jQuery that will give you some great results. With that said....
Have you looked at http://chrisgriffith.wordpress.com/2010/12/20/creating-lightbox-galleries-with-flash-catal yst/ ? It might be easier that what you are trying to do. However, with 50 images you are going to run into the 20 state limit. Meaning you are going to have to nest assets. Without seeing the design, it is hard to advice how you should cluster your images.

  • Flash Catalyst Beta 2 Hangs

    My System:
    2 GHz Intel Core Duo
    1 GB memory
    OSX 10.5.8
    Issues:
Flash Catalyst Beta 2 intermittently hangs after various steps. i.e. Grouping layers, Moving group, etc. Requires a hard shutdown using Force Quit.
Grouping - Catalyst auto selects layers beneath current layer even though these layers are not visible it then turns on the visiblity setting, if the layer is not visible it should not be selectable in my opinion,  if (visble = false) { lock = true }.
    Would like to see:
Locking layer's -  you have to click each individual layer, would be more convienient as well as consistent with other Adobe products to be able to click and drag in the lock column to lock multiple layers at the same time. This should also be the behavior for the visibility column as well.
Since this is a beta, it would be nice to have a logging feature that you can enable at installation time or anytime afterwards, default setting should be set to off. We can use, well I can only speak about a MAC, the computers Crash reporter and Hang Reporter but it would be more convienient if the issues were in their own file. Wishful thinking.
So far this is what I've found, unable to help identify any more bugs due to Flash Catalyst crashing everytime.

    Narcisco,
Thank you for replying so quickly.
Hang issue: (note this happens intermittenly)
I have a Photoshop CS2 comp with 13 layers, that I've imported into FB2. Each layer representing a single web page.
FB2 seems to hang mostly when I'm adjusting the transitions from one state to the next, fade ins and fade outs.
    Layer visibility issue:
    1. I've Created an Adobe Illustrator CS2 file with 3 layers, a blue circle, a red rectangle and a green star.
    2. Open FB2 and import the AI file.
    3. Turn the visibility of the blue circle layer off.
    4. Group all 3 layers by click and dragging the black arrow tool across all items.
    5. Create a new Duplicate State of Page 1.
    6. The blue circle layer will now be visible in both Page 1 and Page 2 even though the layers panel does not show the eye symbol for the blue circle layer.
    7. Run the project and again the blue circle is visible.
    Thank you
    -Keith
P.S. I just published to swf and selected create AIR as well, and the blue circle is visible as well.

  • Flash Catalyst import dilemma

I am trying to use the new workflow of creating screens in Flash Catalyst, which is a big plus.
However, I need to create a series of "sub-screens" for my application, which is similar to a "Wizard".  So I create a screen in FC, export it.  In Flash Builder, following the tutorial video on GoToAndLearn, I can import the FXP file only as a new project.  So I did, then switched to the Finder and copied the Main.mxml and its subfolders into my original FB project.
I created an instance of this using <local:Main id="test" /> but the buttons and actions do not work o I get an error when clicking about a child relationship.
What's the correct workflow for creating PARTS of a larger project in FC, and then using them properly in FB4?

In an attempt to consolidate the FC->FB import discussions, I'll suggest we discuss over here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2003319
But to briefly address your specific issue here...
I'm guessing that you probably do not want to copy/paste the Catalyst-produced Application directly into your FB project, but instead perhaps:
    a) Import the Catalyst FXP as its own project, add your extra FB code to that project.
    b) Import the Catalyst FXP as its own project, copy the components from it into your FB project, use them from your FB application.
    c) Import the Catalyst FXP as its own project, copy the components from it into a new Library project
    d) Import a Catalyst FXPL that consists of the components you created in your Catalyst application.  This will allow you to more easily separate your reusable components into their own project in a more automatic fashion.
If it's possible to keep a lot of the functionality out of the Application and instead stuffed into the components themselves, this may help save some time later when continuing development with the code in Flash Builder.  Basically, all I mean is that if you create multiple application-level States ("Pages") in Catalyst and then rely a lot on transitions between them, etc., then you'll be more likely to have to factor all that out functionality that's baked into the application when you are working in Builder.  For this reason, a more "developer-friendly" Catalyst app may involve a single Catalyst page which then has all the functionality stuffed into the content therein.  However, based on your design, this may or may not be practical and you may lose out on some features in Catalyst by limiting yourself to a single page.  I'm not a Catalyst pro myself, so I'd suggest you checkout the Catalyst forums to look for further tips.
