Organizing photo clips (again)

I would like to make a movie from aphoto slideshow with 300 photos ordered by date.
I've used a program called cameraid to batch rename the pictures so their file name is the date in long form.
for example 20060801020304 is 2006,august, 01 days, 02 hours, 03 minutes, 04 seconds
But I can't understand how/why imovie seems to reorder and disorganize the clips when I import them so that they show up in the clip viewer in a strange order that does not follow the numbers in order.
Does anyone know how they are being reorganized? Is there some sort of truncation or conversion to hexadecimal? Maybe a bug?

Create a new album in iPhoto that will contain the photos you intend to use in your movie. Populate the album with your photo candidates and put them into the rough sequential order you intend to use (kinda like making a shopping list). Quit iPhoto and launch iMovie. Select your folder in the Photos panel, and your photos will be available in the order you placed them (although you can certainly choose them in any order you like, or multiple times).
When you're done with the iMovie project, open iPhoto again and drag the album to iPhoto's trash to clean up (throw the shopping list away).

Help with titles in themes & photo clips jumping

Hi all - working on a project and can't figure two things out! One, my main opening that I did in the themes opening I want to say a longer title than it will let me. I can type it in under title and it lets me but it only show three words when it plays - can't figure it out? Second, I have about 50 photo clips and 4 of them are jumping mid-play. Only in the timeline setting. When I play them individually they are fine. They jump mid-way thru the play and the transitions are fine. Only 4 out of 50 doesn't make sense? Anyone know? Thanks!!

No, I've tried extracting the audio and re-doing the title, but when I burn the DVD (and you know how long that takes) I find on playback I have these grating noises.
I suppose I should be grateful they are only brief and affect only a few of the many titles.

I have a sony handicam and I imported the clips to iMovie and they lost quality and converted the audio to stereo. I want to import the project to final cut X and import the AVCHD in 1080p and surround sound and export the movie in bluray. Can I relink the clips without editing everything again?

Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

Changing duration of a photo clip in iMovie 5.0.2

I can't change the duration of my photo clips consistently. Sometimes when I highlight a clip it shows in the photo pane (top right) and I can then use the speed slider bar which in 5.0.2 is underneath the small photo.
However, often the clip I want does NOT show in the photo pane -- I see the very first clip I imported with its duration. So I have to delete the clip, and import it again, redo the effect and the transition -- isn't there an easier way?
(In 5.0.2 when one double clicks the clip, all you get is the information about the clip, with no means to change the duration.)

Hi pdfac - you will find that the culprit is the effect that you have added. Photos without added effects will display in the Photos Pane, but those with an effect added will not. It will be necessary to remove the effect. Just select the pic in the Timeline or Clips View, and hit 'Delete. That removes the effect but not the pic. Now the duration can be adjusted. If you have added effects to quite a few that need duration adjustments, by selecting them all, you can do the operation all at one go.
Note - you do not have to trash the photos and start again!
You cannot change the duration by double-clicking, because the pics have become video clips, as a result of having the Ken Burns box ticked. The quality is best if the box IS ticked.

HT2479 I'm trying to extract a photo clip from my video. How do I do that?

I just took a video of my daughter's new wine and cheese shop. She loved it and wanted a picture of her that is in the movie. Can I extract a photo clip from the movie? I can't figure out how to do it and would love some help. Thanks.

Or just play back in full screen and pause the video on the section you want and take a screen shot(Shift CMD + 3).
Another thing you can do is Export using Quicktime from the Share menu and change the Export setting to Movie to Image Sequence. Make sure you export into a folder as you will get approx 30 images for every second of video you export. I would recommend creating a new project and just adding a couple seconds of the video clip around the spot that has the image you want then export Movie to Image Sequence (into a folder).

Making offline photos online again...

In PSE7, I am trying to move offline photos back online on a larger disk. I've searched the forums and can't find advice that actually works. Any help will be appreciated. Some posting said that I can put the disk holding the offline photos online again and it should just work but the drive letter of the has to be THE SAME as it was when the photos were moved offline. But, is there a way to determine what drive letter PSE thinks this is supposed to be?

1. Is the drive a USB flash drive (thumb drive) or an external USB hard drive?
2. When you connect the drive, is its contents accessible in Windows Explorer? Can you see the offline photos on that drive in Explorer? If you cant, then the problem is with the drive or its contents, and dont follow the rest of thes steps.
3. In PSE, select one of the offline photos. Right-click the photo and select Show Properties. In the Properties General pane, what is the exact path of the photo shown next to the yellow folder icon? (If you cant find the offline photos in you catalog, dont follow the rest of these steps.)
4. Leave the drive connected.
5. Download "psedbtool" from here:

and follow steps 1 4. This creates the file output.log in the same folder where you extracted psedbtool post its contents here. This will list all the drives that are recorded in PSEs catalog along with all the drives currently connected to your computer.

I have exactly the same problem with iPhoto. On my iPad I just enabled Photo Stream once and it automatically is enabled each time I turn it on again. But on my MacBook Pro and my older tower Mac (both running Lion) I have to enable Photo Stream every time I reboot the computer. Frustrating.

Can I make a photo clip longer than 4 seconds?

I want to leave more time to read the title I have going over a photo clip, so want to lengthen the clip more than 4 seconds. I tried copying and pasting the photo to make it 8 seconds long and the title dragging across the two, but 8 seconds is longer than I want. When I shorten the photo I copied to the entire clip is only 5 or 6 seconds that doesn't work. I'm able to shorten the title length so the text appears for less time, but it seems photos can only be 4 or 8 seconds, is that the case?

Something went wrong. Now for a useful answer...
Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

Organizing Photos in a Slideshow

I am organizing photos by date within a large slide show that I am setting up in iPhoto 9. When I decide to add another photo it of course goes to the end of the slide show. How do I get each new photo up into the slide show where I want it without having to drag each photo up into it's proper place? There has to be a better way, but I can't figure it out! It's a real drag doing it this way! In iPhoto 8 there were smaller thumbnail sizes that could be 'dragged and dropped' into place, but I can't find that in iPhoto 9 slideshow. Thanks so much in advance for any help!

Add your photos to an album that's set to sort by date. Then when you have all the photos you want select that album and click on the Slideshow button. It's either that or doing what you're doing.

Organizing photos with no dates - what's best?

Hi, I'm new to Macs and iPhoto so please be patient! I have quite a lot of photos scanned from very old family photos, many of which I have no idea of the date when it was taken. iPhoto seems to want a date for every photograph - is there a way of labelling the date of a photo as unknown? Similarly is tehre a way of giving a photo a year without having to specify a day and month, as sometimes the only thing I know about a photo is the year.
How do other people go about organizing photos with this problem?
Any suggestions gratefully received!

About all you can do in changing the date for the photos in the Info pane is to select 1/1 as the day for the year you want to associate with the photo. Otherwise, as you've found out, iPhoto will put today's date with that year.
What I do is name the photo before importing with the international date format, YYYY-MM-DD-01.jpg, -02.jpg, etc. You can do it manually or if you have a group your can batch rename them sequentially with an application like "R-Name". You can find it by searching at VersionTracker.com. In your case you can just use the year and some other identifier, i.e. 2001-grandma.jpg, They can be sorted alphanumerically by year that way. You can also change the title in iPhoto, either singularly for by batch. This will change the title but not the file names. To get the file names the same as the title you must either rename before importing or after renaming in iPhoto export to the desktop using the "Use Title" option.

Organizing photos on itouch

Hi, I have organized photos on my PC with multiple levels of folders so that I can navigate and find photos quickly. When I synch with the itouch, it looks like I can have only one level of folders - I would think there must be some way to have multiple folder levels on your itouch?

Organizing photos on more than one computer

Hello,
I would like suggestions on organizing photos. I am a professor of architecture and have several thousands of photos of buildings and cities that I have visited and designed. I use some of these photos for lectures and other professional work, but many of them go unused. The total amount of space taken is about 100GB and is growing fast. My main computer is a 15" MBPro, but I have begun to use an 11" MBA for lecturing. The problem is that neither drive is able to hold my complete photo library.
My question is: How do I best organize my photo library so that I can keep the same "5 Star" photos on both computers, but still be able to see images on a back-up hard drive when connected? I have both Aperture and iPhoto.

You are asking two questions in one. You'll get a more successful set-up if you address them separately. The question you stress is file management. Put simply, you want to be able to use an Aperture Library (or a subset of same) on two portable computers with insufficient built-in storage space. Secondarily, you are also asking about image management: how to structure your Library for best use providing source material for a professor of architecture.
The file management questions is more easily answered, esp. as you have specified that your top need to have 5-star (and presumably only 5-star) images on the second computer. First, read the User Manual chapter on Library files. That will almost certainly provide you the information you need to answer your question with more specificity than we can provide here. (Click heading for link.)
Working with Library Files
Aperture exports projects, albums, and folders as a library file. You can transfer the library file from one Aperture system to another and then merge the transferred library file into the library file on that system. All links between versions and their masters are maintained when library items are transferred. This is particularly useful if you use a portable computer when on location or away from your studio, and a workstation at your studio. Any work done in the field can be exported from your portable computer as a library file and then merged with the library file on the workstation at your studio.
When the library file becomes large and requires more disk space than is available in its current location, you can move it to a hard disk with greater storage capacity. To change the location of the library, you move the library file to a new location and then double-click it to open it in Aperture.
I think you'll it easiest to use one of your portable machines only, both in the office and at the lectern, with all of your images having Referenced Masters on an external FW800 drive. Either set you Previews to the size you need in the lecture hall, or if that is insufficient, convert all 5-star images' Referenced Masters to Managed Masters using the "File→Consolidate Masters" command. If you do that, you'll have your Library on your laptop, your 5-star images Masters inside that Library (as Managed Masters) and all you other image's masters on your external drive.
There are many posts on the forum re: Managed and Referenced Masters (search -- good stuff there). Two things to know from the get-go:
Every image has a Master
Image's have Masters. Libraries can contain all of one kind of Master, or may be mixed. Libraries contain images; images are linked to Masters.

PS: Ditch iPhoto, or ditch Aperture. They are not practicably compatible.

Making simple Cross desolves at the end of still photo clips from my library. Not making a clean disolve beteen. Single frames from the previous clip are flashing half way through the desolve. Did both a drag and drop and insert disolve.
