Organizing Photos By Folder In the Library
Hello,
I am a little obbsessed with orgazanizing photos. I have organized all my pictures into year>season (winter, spring etc)>event. I have been using photoshop to edit and output my pictures and then taking the edited ones and loading them into iphoto which makes them as "events" I have liked this a lot. As I switch to Lightroom (something I am very ready to do), I don't see a similar grouping feature. It seems you can make key words or collections, but I don't see an automatic grouping system that would nest photos from events (ie taken on the same day). This may be a deal breaker for me. Any help here?

By all means, builds a very robust folder structure (I do), then LR will import all that and show you this in Library just as you'd see in the Finder or Explorer. I think an approach that doesn't depend solely on LR to find photo's is an excellent idea. LR will mimic whatever structure you build outside of it (within reason). The key after that is never moving, renaming, deleting files OUTSIDE of Lightroom! It doesn't know what you did. But in LR, you can name, delete, move, add folders, etc.

There are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
*1. Permissions in the Library* : Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
*2. Minor Database corruption*: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
*3. A Damaged Photo*: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
*4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
*5. A corrupted preference file*: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

When I click the star to bookmark a site it goes into the recently bookmarked area of the library. I then drag or cut or copy and past it into a folder I already have in the bookmark library, but it doesn't disappear from the recently bookmarked. If I delete it from the recent, it also gets deleted from the folder in the library.
What can I do to keep it in the folder but remove it from recently bookmarked?No, currently there is not a way to do this.

I have iphoto 08 version 7.1.5. I copied photos from recent - last import into albums. I then deleted the photos and emptied the trash. Today all the albums are empty and the photos are nowhere in the library. Have I lost them all?

When I add a folder to the library, does that mean that 'later' when I drop a new file into that folder (already added) it will automatically end up in iTunes? (or do I have to add file/folder to library every time I have a new file??) I'm using XP...
iTunes does not actively scan the media folders. If you manually add content to a folder, then you must add that content to iTunes manually via the File > Add File/Folder feature.
The only folder that gets scanned is the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder. -
have a question mark in the place of my mail's icon and i cannot get into my email. I found my email folder in the library ,but it is not in applications. How do i get my email back ?
you should look in your applications folder to see if mail is still there. the dock icon is pointing to mail being in your applications folder. it has probably been moved or deleted for some reason from the app folder. do a spotlight search for your mail program. if it is still on your computer, move it back to the applications folder and when you click the question mark, it should see it is back and open. The email folder in your library shouldn't have to be touched. you need mail.app itself.

In the user Library? Open Finder and select Go then press the Option key. In the list you will see your user Library folder (underneath Home). Click it to open it. Now you can add a folder inside. You can left click/hold and drag the Library icon at the top of the Finder window to your Finder Sidebar so it's always avaliable.

Using font folder in the Library folder OSX10.2.8?
Hi. I've checked postings and searched the database but couldn't find anything. This may be a dumb question. I work on OSX 10.2.8 Jaguar with OS9.22 (Classic). For Classic apps I use ATM Deluxe for font management. I don't have a font management program for OSX. Is it possible to drop the same fonts into the Fonts folder in the Library folder that are also loaded into ATM so that I can access them from both OSX and Classic? Thanks.
CathyIf you want both OS X and Classic apps to see the same fonts, you place them in OS 9's /System Folder/Fonts/ folder. This is a big hassle though (as you likely already know) since you can't put subfolders of fonts in that folder. Meaning everything has to be tossed in loose, including Type 1 PostScript fonts. Deactivating them is harder. You can just drag the fonts back out, but once placed in its Fonts folder, Classic will not release fonts until you shut it down, even though they're not in the the Fonts folder any more.
You current best bet at a replacement font manager is Master Juggler. It can open and close fonts simultaneously for OS X and 9 (Classic). Suitcase X and X1 did this, but the newest release, Fusion, does not. -

What versionn of iPhoto? Of the OS? what exactly did you do and how exactly did you import? what happens? are they in the Last Import list? What is the source fo the photos? What else can you tell us?

Where do my photos live!! The library is???
I know my photos live in the iphoto 08 library but how do i get to the "file" to see all the pictures NOT when iPhoto is open. Its only because when i want to add a picture to a email i have to copy it from iPhoto and put it on my desktop. i know the path is something like
user/myname/pictures/iphoto ect. but that doesnt get me to the raw file.

The library has been converted to a unix style package probably because so many users had messed around inside the library folder and damaged it. See See TD's treatis on file access. It describes several way to access the photos for use outside of iPhoto.
Or, for those times iPhoto is not open you can use the freewareiMedia Browser which integrates seamlessly with iPhoto, Aperture and any folder you designate that contains image files.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -

When we try to move documents from one folder to another folder in the document library using "Open with explorer" getting beloe error.
Can read from the source file or disk.
The user having below permission for the Library as well as site.

If you are moving files in two libraries in different sites, then the error will occur and it is by design that there are limitations on the DAV move commands that the DAV client is respecting.

If you are moving files in the same library, I recommend you to use Wireshark to reveal the error message and enable IIS
Trace Logging for Failed Requests to examine the IIS log file for troubleshooting.

To narrow down the issue scope, I recommend you to test with another library and see if the copy in explorer can work.

anyone have any ideas? The only way I can get around this is export the photo back into iPhoto and try to edit out the mess.
The waves you are seeing on your monitor must be more pronounced than what I'm seeing in the posted screenshots. The Library module uses Adobe RGB AND 8-bit JPEG preview images, which can cause banding in fine gradient areas (compared to Develop view), but I'm not seeing a huge difference in your screenshots. Here's a screen shot with my non-wide gamut monitor calibration profile. If my screenshot shows less banding than what you are seeing with the original images it indicates a monitor profile issue as described by twenty-one. A hardware calibrated monitor is recommended to prevent these types of issues.
The Library image also appears lighter in the shadow area, which probably indicates more Luminance NR needs to be applied or perhaps less sharpening. Try it and see if that helps with the issue. -

Are you using a different Terminal front end than the default one for the Terminal applicaiton? I'm asking because of the "clicked on RUN" statement. I get no RUN item in my Terminal application. -
I'm unable to move a folder in the library viewer
In Aperture 3.1.2, in the Library viewer, under Projects & Albums, I have a bunch of folders (Personal, Research, Teaching, etc.), and these folders have sub-folders (2011, 2010, etc., as well as some with non-numeric names). With most of these folders I'm able to freely drag them around to put them in the order that I want. But there's at least one folder that stubbornly refuses to be moved. If I try to drag it to another position under the top-level folder (Personal), it just stays as the first folder under Personal. If I drag it to be a subfolder of one of the folders under Personal it will move to the new position, but if I drag it back out of there, to once again make it a sub-folder of Personal, it again insists on being the first folder in the list, no matter where I've actually dragged it to.
I have "keep arranged by" set to manual.
This seems like a bug to me. But I am fairly new to Aperture so maybe I am just missing something. Any suggestions?

Abe Z.Why do we have to install 2 add ins for something that should be built in? Please add this to the next version or an update to this one even. We should see the full path of a bookmark when we search for it. Show Parent Folder alone isn't enough if you have sub folders, so I installed Go Parent Folder as well in case of sub folders.
