Organizing photos in finder

When I save new photos to a folder, it will automatically sort them by name - an order I almost never want them in. Then, after I painstakingly rearrange the photos in my desired order, if I close the folder and reopen it, the photos will often revert to the alphabetical arrangement. Each time, I look at the 'Arrange by' options and nothing is selected there, so I'm not sure why it's doing this. I generally prefer to arrange photos by the date created from oldest to newest... however, if I select 'Arrange by Date Created', it sorts them the opposite way - newest to oldest - so that doesn't seem to be a viable solution. I would really just like to know: how can I stop the automatic alphabetical arranging, and just let the photos remain in the order in which I place them?
This might be a very basic question, but it's been fairly annoying... hoping someone can help me out. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I'm with Thomas.
You're arranging files not photos. Photos get their date and time from the Exif metadata written to the photo when the camera shutter clicks. It's quite independent of the file data, which can change as you move the files around or edit them. You'll be better off using a photo app for the job - the organising, sorting and view possibilities are much greater than using the Finder.

  • Organizing photos from finder

Hi!, I am a new Mac user and I organized all my pictures from i photo library in finder; I moved pictures in the Data file and also in the originals; now I can't see some of my pictures in iphoto... what can I do to retrieve this???
    Thank you!!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't have as a positive outlook for you as PhillyPhan does. I don't think rebuilding will help at all but certainly give it a go. What you'll need to do is start a new library and import the full sized image files that are in the Originals folder as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Organizing Photos in a Slideshow

I am organizing photos by date within a large slide show that I am setting up in iPhoto 9. When I decide to add another photo it of course goes to the end of the slide show. How do I get each new photo up into the slide show where I want it without having to drag each photo up into it's proper place? There has to be a better way, but I can't figure it out! It's a real drag doing it this way! In iPhoto 8 there were smaller thumbnail sizes that could be 'dragged and dropped' into place, but I can't find that in iPhoto 9 slideshow. Thanks so much in advance for any help!
    Sunny

    Sunny:
Add your photos to an album that's set to sort by date. Then when you have all the photos you want select that album and click on the Slideshow button. It's either that or doing what you're doing.
Meanwhile send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html

  • Organizing photos with no dates - what's best?

Hi, I'm new to Macs and iPhoto so please be patient! I have quite a lot of photos scanned from very old family photos, many of which I have no idea of the date when it was taken. iPhoto seems to want a date for every photograph - is there a way of labelling the date of a photo as unknown? Similarly is tehre a way of giving a photo a year without having to specify a day and month, as sometimes the only thing I know about a photo is the year.
How do other people go about organizing photos with this problem?
    Any suggestions gratefully received!
    Thanks,
    Andy

About all you can do in changing the date for the photos in the Info pane is to select 1/1 as the day for the year you want to associate with the photo. Otherwise, as you've found out, iPhoto will put today's date with that year.
What I do is name the photo before importing with the international date format, YYYY-MM-DD-01.jpg, -02.jpg, etc. You can do it manually or if you have a group your can batch rename them sequentially with an application like "R-Name". You can find it by searching at VersionTracker.com. In your case you can just use the year and some other identifier, i.e. 2001-grandma.jpg, They can be sorted alphanumerically by year that way. You can also change the title in iPhoto, either singularly for by batch. This will change the title but not the file names. To get the file names the same as the title you must either rename before importing or after renaming in iPhoto export to the desktop using the "Use Title" option.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • HELP!!!! Organizing Photos!!!!

I have so many photos and many, many folders. All of my folders I've created between 2007 an now 2008 are all in the "Souce Bar." I need to organize my pictures. How can I make a 2007 folder and within that folder have sub-folders. Meaning a MAIN FOLDER for 2007, then inside, there would be SUB-FOLDERS (i.e. XMAS, Birthday, Friends, Family) all photos taken within that year. Then the same for 2008. I've tried created a 2007 folder then dragging the other folders I want into it, but it won't work.
    Please help.
    Thank you!

My suggestion is either to upgrade or to use multiple libraries. I have about 100,000 photos stored on my hard drives, and about 20,000 of them are in ten different iPhoto Libraries that I've set up. The rest are in folders that I've set up and organized in the Finder, and I use other applications to manage and edit those. I want control over the way they're filed, and this arrangement gives me that control. The limited file arranging I can do in iPhoto 4.0.3 is adequate for the categories of pictures I keep in my iPhoto Libraries, given that I also choose which Library to import each new batch of pictures into.
To create a new library, hold down the Option key while opening iPhoto and choose "Create Library" in the dialog box that will appear. There is no practical limit to the number of different libraries you can have. After creating a new, empty library, you can name it anything you like: "Family snapshots 2000-2003," "Vacation pictures," "Photos from friends," etc. — whatever will be helpful in organizing your pictures.
You also use the Option key when launching iPhoto to switch from one library to another: hold the Option key down, choose "Find Library", and select the library that you want iP to open. It will remain selected as the default library until you swtich again to a different library on a subsequent launch of iP. You can only have one library open at a time, and you can only switch libraries when you are opening iPhoto, so you must quit and reopen to make a switch.
Now open your existing large library. Select and Export to folders on the desktop all the pictures you want to move to your new library. Reopen the new library and import the pictures you just exported to the desktop. When you're satisfied that they all appear as expected in the new library, open the old library again. Use the Command-Delete key combination to move those photos into iPhoto's internal Trash, and use the Empty Trash command in iPhoto's File menu to delete them permanently from the old library. Quit iPhoto, and in the Finder, trash the exported copies off the desktop and empty the Trash.
Repeat the above process for each new library you want to create. Remember to do the deleting and empty the two different Trashes regularly as you go along, so as not to clog up your hard drive with multiple copies of your pictures.

My wife and I each have an apple computer and an iPhone.  Setting them up with the iCloud put us on the same account.  I take a lot of photos on job sites and she takes her own photos we have to scan though each others photos to find our own.  How do I separate the accounts without one of us losing our own stuff?

Decide which device will be changing accounts.  On that device, if you have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll that you want to keep on the device, save them to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iDevice.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to delete any data that you don't want in each account (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa) you will have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete it.

  • I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

I deleted the photos via Finder and empty trash long time ago. The thing is, that I want to recover one event or album.  The event appears in the iphoto but when open, it shows "!". Is it possible to recover the photos?

No.  When you removed the photos via the finder you damage the library.  Photos should always be removed from the library using iPhoto, never with the Finder.
If you have a Time Machine backup of the library from before you deleted the photos you can restore the library to the Desktop and export that album from it to import into your current library.
It's been too long to be able to try one of the file recovery applications.  You sure to have overwritten those files with new files since them.

Be sure Safari does not have the Block Pop-Up Windows preference set.
Where I work now there are several unencrypted VLANs that require authentication, and Safari promptly pops up a window for me to register every time.

  • Can't open Photos in Finder

I cannot open my photos in finder...
because I can't open them in finder, I can't open them with any other program.
Any ideas as to why, or how I can fix this?
    Thank you!

With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
There is no version of iPhoto were it was recommended that you access the files via the Finder. On the contrary, each version has recommended that users do not access the iPhoto Library Folder. There are no user serviceable parts there.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Any of these are a:faster and b: safer than rooting through the Finder.
Remember: It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

Is there any way to view and download my pictures directly from finder?  [Emphasis added.]
The digitization of data has introduced a complexity to our interactions with it that we continue to struggle with.  "Picture" and "Photo" now mean different things in different contexts.  In this case (and in general) defining our terms clearly is the first step towards understanding what we are trying to do.  Understanding is the path that allows us to do it.
All pedantic, but please stick with me here  .
You record a set of instantaneous data with a camera.
That data is processed by your camera and saved to a file.
The file format is usually either RAW or JPG.
You transfer those files to your computer, and you import them into the program Aperture (often in one operation).
From each camera-file imported, Aperture creates a record in its database (called, imho unhelpfully, a Library) and an Image that you see in the Aperture Browser and Viewer.
Aperture links the Image and the imported file.
The imported file is called, within Aperture, an Original.
    Every Image has an Original.
The Image is not the Original.  The Image is what you see in Aperture.
The Original is a file that is stored on your computer.
You can make changes to an Image.
    Aperture calls these changes Adjustments.
Adjustments are saved to another file attached to the record in the database.  Let's call this file the Changes File.
Aperture uses these two files attached to the record in the database to create the Image.
Image = Original + Changes File.
The Image is not a file.
Because the Image is not a file, it cannot be shared with other programs.  It exists only inside of Aperture.
In order to share an Image with another program, you must first create a file of the Image.
You do this by exporting Images ("File ▹ Export ▹ Version" is the command in Aperture; should be, imho, "File ▹ Export ▹ Image").
You may ask, "Why all the complexity?  Why doesn't Aperture save Images as files?"  The answer is simple:  Images can require less — and in many cases very very much less — storage space than files of Images.  Rather than save a full-size file for every Image, Aperture saves only instructions on how to make that full-size file.  The gain in storage efficiency is huge.  The trade-off is that although your Images are always available to be made into share-able files, you must create those files when needed (which you do by exporting selected Images).
Here is your question reworded with more precise terms:
    SamanthaR22 might have written:
How do I access Images in my Aperture Library in the Finder?  I would like I be able to select files in the Finder when I am making photo books online without having to create them by exporting Images from Aperture into a new Finder folder. Is there any way to view and download my Images directly from the Finder?
No, there is not.  Images exist only in Aperture, and are not accessible for use in other programs.  You must create, for each Image in your Aperture Library, a new file outside of your Aperture Library in order to use it with another program.
Aperture does allow you to create and save within your Library share-able files of your Images.  These files are called Previews.  You specify the file parameters in Aperture Preferences on the Previews tab.  These files are available to other programs via the OS X Media Browser.  These files are what you get when you drag selected Images out of the Aperture program and drop them on another program or on your desktop (which is part of the Finder).
    HTH.

Videos on iPhoto no longer play. All was fine as I was organizing photos, but suddenly no more videos would play. What has happened?

Something went wrong. Now for a useful answer...
Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.
