Organizing recordings? possible?

like others have mentioned, the new fios tv 1.9 update is horrible. that's not a matter of hating change, it's just a really bad update, kinda like Windows ME. anyways, it's not likely verizon is going to do anything about it any time soon so that means suffering with it so...
one thing i noticed is that the dvr recordings are no longer sorted. they all have been titled as "recurring recording." i have to scroll through each to figure out which is which. any way to set it back so that it groups like recordings? i've searched through the settings and haven't seen anything. i've tried googling, but not sure which search terms would be best. so far i haven't found the answer online. telling me to record by "series" is not going to work on shows that do not follow the guide's timeline. the guide doesn't always use the consistently right name either. hence, creating manual recordings is the best method...
thanks in advance

• Long recordings possible with FCE?

Hi.
I am an astronomer who studies meteors and I record the sky all night with a video camera running into an old fashioned VCR at slowest speed which gives me an 8 hour long recording. I am planning now to video record all night directly into a computer hard drive.
Presently I am experimenting with recording video from an analog video camera that sends its signal into a Canopus ADVC110 converter which converts the video camera output to DV and then runs into my old Powerbook G4 via firewire. The system works well with my old Powerbook but I can only record about 1/2 hour of DV before the Powerbook's free 10 Gigabyte of hard drive space is used up.
So, I am looking to get a new iMac with a very large hard drive for all night recording. Will Final Cut Express record 8 or 10 hours of continuous DV through the night? Would this be efficient or do you foresee problems, crashes or glitches?
Thank you in advance for your replies and/or suggestions. If my question isn't clear enough then please ask me for clarification. The nice folks in the Apple store haven't been able to answer my questions. - Tom

Hi Tom,
DV video consumes about 13GB per hour. Ten hours will require over 130GB of hard drive space.
FCE has a capture limit preference setting (Limit Capture Now To). It is expressed in minutes and I believe is limited to 2 digits, in which case the maximum recording time would be 99 minutes. I'll check tonight when I get home.
In any event, yes, capturing over an 8-10 hour period does present some challenges not the least of which is a possible system glitch in the middle of the night that hangs up your capturing process. It would be advisable to install only the minimum necessary applications on your new Mac and make sure all the system prefs are set to minimize the possibility of something interfering with your all night recordings (like screen savers, energy saver settings, spotlight, etc.)
An alternative would be a dedicated DV hard drive (for example, look into nNovia or Firestore drives) that hooks directly to your camera and the video is recorded onto the hard drive instead of directly to your Mac; you can transfer the video files to your Mac anytime.

• Is there a way to paste content from one ID doc to another without importing the styles?

Hi all,
I often work with transferring content over from one catalog to another...each catalog has a completely different set of styles. Since I am an organization freak and like to keep things as organized as possible, it drives me crazy when all of the styles from the other ID doc are transferred over into my my new document. What I used to do was delete all of the styles from the catalog I was copying over from and save a copy like that simply for the use of copying information over (so that no styles were brought over), but I am currently working with copying over content from multiple catalogs that were built in InDesign and it will take me forever deleting all of the styles in those documents.
Normally it is a GOOD thing when styles are copied over, but not in this case. It is not important that format is carried over either...I just want the content. Normally I will grab a bunch of content (tables, text boxes and images) at a time to copy over. I amjust not able to use "Paste without formatting" either:( It is greyed out. I very often use the "Paste without formatting" when pasting in text by itself into a text block and that works great! But is there any way I can do something similar with a bunch of contents that are being pasted? Or even if I just want to paste a text block or two?
Help?
Thank you so much in advance for your help:)
Best,
Christine

Mary and Peter,
Thank you both so much for your input...those are both really great ideas! I had actually not known about the ability to "break the link" to the styles... I must have missed seeing that all this time I have been using InDesign...that is really useful!! And I also like the ideas of renaming the styles...I will have to see what works best tomorrow as I continue on. There are just soooooo many different styles involved that renaming them may not be feasible in this particular instance so I may need to just "break the links"....but then I just remembered that there are lots of table styles, cell styles and character/paragraph styles linked with the tables alone that I have to copy over....grrrrr. (making my hair stand on end thinking of it...lol)
Isn't there a way to break the links to EVERY style linked to one selected item (break the link to all table/cell/character/paragraph/object styles in one fell swoop) ?

• Can't capture from my cannon video camera to Final Cut or iMovie.

Hi. I can't capture from my cannon video camera to FInal Cut or iMovie. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I don't think my iMac is recognizing the camera. I was told I don't need a firewire, that USB would work if I'm just capturing. If I need a firewire what kind (the one I was sold didn't fit). I'm getting an "unable to locate external device message". Not sure of next steps to try. Thanks.

Forget USB for capturing from tape. USB is only for stills from a Tape Based camera.
You require a firewire cable.
The camera connection end will be four pin and the Mac is nine pin to the 800 port.
Ask for a 9 to 4 pin firewire cable. Sounds like you have the wrong one as they can also be 4 to 4 or 4 to 6 pin!!
Also you will need the correct Easy Setup in FCE so FCE talk to the camera, exactly which one depends on what type of footage is being sent to FCE from the camera during capture.

• Recommendation: Aperture or Photoshop Elements 8?

I've been using iPhoto '08 for the past year and find that it does 90% of what I need. For a few photos though, I want to be able to apply adjustments to certain areas of the photo, not to the whole photo like iPhoto does.
I shoot in RAW and would want to keep iPhoto for keeping my photos organized if possible.
I've downloaded the demo for Aperture and I'm thinking this is what I'm looking for, but is there any reason why I should consider PSE? From the demo it looks like PSE makes it's adjustments against JPEGs (from what I can see) and as a result if I applied a brighten or darken layer with a mask to a photo and set the adjustment too high it resulted in some awful pixelation in the images.
Anyway, given what I'm trying to do, what do you recommend?
Thanks!

Aperture is like iPhoto -- in that it manages your entire photo library and allows you to apply adjustments to the photos. Photoshop Elements doesn't manage photo libraries and is intended not only for 'adjustments' but for wholesale manipulation of a photo (e.g. major effects, adding objects or people to photos who weren't really in them, removing major items from a photo (not just minor things like blemishes, etc.)
iPhoto applies adjustments to the whole photo (and, generally speaking, so does Aperture), whereas in Photoshop you have to select an area in a photo in order to adjust it (and adjustments will only be applied to the selection.)
If you get Photoshop Elements, you can configure iPhoto to use it as an 'external editor'. By default all the quick adjustments you want to make are handled by iPhoto, but you can right click any photo and select "edit in external editor" and it would invoke whatever utility you want... such as Photoshop.

• Multiple Pages in a Web Gallery?

Is it possible to have multiple pages in one web gallery?
I have a batch of photos that I need a client to proof, but I want to separate them into different categories because there's a lot of them to go through and I want it to be as organized as possible.
So is it possible to have tabs linking to different pages in a gallery, so I could have something like, 'Interiors,' 'Exteriors,' 'Portraits,' etc.?

You might want to look at the third party TTG Highslide Galley and TTG Pages. The gallery is just that, a web engine for creating galleries but with more options than the LR galleries, and TTG pages will index multiple galleries and generate a home page. That way you could have separate galleries for interir, exterior, etc. It also has client review functionality.

• NTSC vs. PAL: asset question

Hoping this will be a trivial question for someone, since my DSP 4 documentation doesn't seem to have much to say about it...
I'm planning to produce a series of DVDs whose content will consist of a large number of video assets (2000+). Currently, these assets are in NTSC MPEG-2 format, with corresponding audio assets in either AC3 or AIFF. My question is: what do I need to do in order to produce a complimentary series of PAL DVDs with this content, given that DSP doesn't appear capable of importing NTSC video assets into PAL projects directly?
Now that I'm on an Intel-based machine, I've sent in my upgrade fee for the latest version of Final Cut Studio (which of course includes DSP), so I'll have that at my disposal. Does this software provide a batch-friendly means for me to do what I'm attempting, or do I need additional tools?
TIA for any advice.
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You will need to convert NTSC assets to PAL assets to do it properly (including menus). Compressor does conversion and there is also other software, such as www.Nattress.com, which does conversion.
The quickest (but may not be best) is to run the assets in bulk through Compressor (but this will also depend on whether you have the Final Cut files still).
2,000 video files is daunting, so try to stay as organized as possible
Also as an aside, more people who use PAL (ex-U.S.) have the ability to play NTSC as compared to the U.S. which is more NTSC centric, so you may want to keep that in mind depending on the project, the audience and whether you will need a PAL version.

• ASDM multiple network objects vs group for rules

I was just curious if there are any performance benefits of using multiple network objects on multiple rules vs consolidating them into fewer rules by grouping them?
For example, I have about 10 lines of NAT exempt rules from the same source to multiple destinations. Is there anything to be gained if I consolidated those into a single rule using an object group for the multiple destinations aside from cleaning up the clutter in ASDM?
Thanks

Hello Tony,
Of course, it will be better because the processing that the ASA is going to use to determine witch rule to match would be decremented, also it would take less space on the configuration file (memory). those are some of the pros regarding creating groups for particular rules.
Sometimes a huge configuration file can increment the CPU usage, etc, etc. so it is better to keep it as small and organized as possible.

• I seem to have 2 libraries one within another

I'm not sure how it got that way but possibly when I reinstalled windows and itunes then copied over the old library from an ext HDD.
Is there any way to fix it? Do I need to fix it. I prefer to have things as organized as possible.

• Itunes S.O.S.

Hello there.
I have a large library of old music files from my prehistoric PC days, and it seems that when I try to add it to my iTunes; it turns in to a mess. Anything from missing artwork, a bunch of Artist Ft Artist, and a bunch of Track files. I've use TuneUp and it work fine given the amount I paid for and the time, but still didn’t compact the Artist and Albums the way they should of been set. I am trying to go back and manually retype all the files, but I have about 300Gb of music. Also when I do add all my music to iTunes, some how it seems to use about almost 200Gb on my hard drive. Anyone with suggestions? I will be more than happy to try anything at this point, because is not urgent; but I like to have it organized if possible. I’ve asked friends who are Dj’s or involve in the music industry and they have either done it manually or they can afford to go thru iTunes and re-download the music they already own. I would go back and use my old CD’s, but I’ve lost them moving, growing up, and not even mention the old LP’s or cassettes that I converted long time ago. Oh I was also wondering about the best format for the music files? What would be the best format to convert the music files to, and be able to keep the sound quality, and shrink to shrink size if possible if not? Not biggy. Thanks if you actually read this whole thing, and I will appreciate your suggestions. Thanks

are you able to uninstall your existing QuickTime using Add/Remove? if so, will the itunes install go through after you do that?

• Mac pro Slow Performance

Hello Everyone,
I made a similar post about this subject not to long ago but now im back in the same situation. I will just recap everything that i did and hear your guys thoughts on what i did.
So to make a long story short.. I have a 2009 imac that contains all of my applications that i use on a daily basis. I then bought a 2012 12-core Mac Pro. Instead of being patient i wanted to start using this machine right away. I then set up migration assistant on both machines and literally copied everything over from my imac to my newly purchased mac pro. I later realized that this was a bad idea because it brought over boat loads of crap that was not being used (essentially 700GB) My computer was running very slow, defiantly not at speed of what a 12-core should be running at. so i started cleaning it up to the best that i could and was able to clear up 200 or so GB's. I still was not satisfied by the results i was getting. I kept getting beach balls and slow performance overall. so i went out and bought a 120GB SSD drive and figured that would be my best solution... well certainly it was at first. I then cleaned up my applications folder to clear up room in that folder. so after that was done i used migration assistant to transfer JUST the APPLICATIONS over to the SSD. After that was complete i then received a ton of crap on on the SSD. On boot up im not getting a pop up that is attached to a program i use to have on the iMac and is started to run slower than before the migration to the SSD...
So basically this is where i stand. I am thinking about just starting over from scratch and only bring over the files and applications that i need on the SSD. What is the best way to take applications off of my imac and put them onto my mac pro (meaning without migration assistant) The reason i need to transfer them over is because i do not have all of the applications on CD form to just re-install again. However, if i need to get the applications from the CD's for this to work then i will just have tp go through with that extra bit of trouble to do it the right way.
The whole purpose of this is trying to clean up my computer and keep it as organized as possible.
If anyone has any recommendations for the best way to perform this operation, its greatly appreciated!
thanks in advance!

A clean install along with Setup Assistant (or Migration Assistant) really is good and important way to go.
Too many issues moving to a newer OS and it has been made easy.
You can CCC clone the home folders elsewhere.
You can CCC the system and apps to another drifve and retain just your home library (the part that is now hidden which is annoying to some and taking too invasive into user space as if we can't and don't need access?)
~/Library
The only apps you can are ones you may as well just download and mount and drag, the type that lack and don't need to install anything anywheres but the package of the app itself.

• Can I Organize music in Artists and Albums on my MuVo N2

I can only play music on the "root" of my MP3 player (MuVo N200). Can anyone tell me if organizing i possible?
I have discovered a menuitem called "Skip Folder". When I go there, A Root folder i shown, but I can not select anything here. Can anyone tell me what this is about?
Regards Preben

STOP!
You can use MuVo N200 Media explorer, and click the button "Sort Different" or something, and than you can sort ALL your tracks on:
Artist

Number on CD

Track Name

Lenght

Even the album name, if i'm not wrong

You can install the explorer from your N200 CD-Rom and download it. You'll have to connect your N200 to the computer, offcource :smileyvery-happy:.
You can sort them with the folders also ofcource, but I think its a lot of work to search for each track the artist, when its written in the info. Than creating folders for EACH artist, and putting them into it... think my Media Explorer works faster.
PS: The Media explorer will put numbers for your MP3 names, but you won't see them while playing back, they are recognised by your player.

• Deleting Render Files

I think I'm an idiot. In the interest of clearing out about 15GB of hard drive space on my macbook, I deleted the render files thinking I don't need them (maybe in fact I don't and they can be recreated - let's hope so!)
I've created a video presentation with voice overs and now I have to make some edits to this presentation. So, when I opened up my FCP file and then reconnected the media (I also moved the location of the media folder so I had to reconnect images, video, music, etc.), I was unable to load up the voice overs
The voice over film strips are all in place in the timeline, but I can't seem to load up the voice over audio files... Does this mean I have to recreate the voice overs all over again or are they located in some place I may have not looked, etc?
I pray the answer isn't one that turns south... I think I could cry, all for what? clearing out 15GB of hd space! **** OCD and trying to be neat/organized.

Recordings made with the voiceover tool are not render files. The files would have been recorded to the folder containing your media for the project, unless you specified somewhere else. Do a search in the finder for the file name you're missing.

• Half full hard drive became 100% full suddenly! HELP

I have a 160gig harddrive in my MBP. I always keep my internal HD as empty and organized as possible. It was only 70 gigs full this morning, I went out to lunch, came back, and suddenly, the hard drive is 100% full!
I have no idea why it did that, after a reboot, I could not reach the desktop after I sign in. So I booted off the snow leopard os disk, and did a check in my disk utility. Says it's OK.
After, I signed on in Safe Mode, checked my backup drive (using Carbon Copy Cloner), and it didn't seem to duplicate, not even full like my internal drive.
Does anyone know what the cause for this may be? Should I just wipe out my drive, and restore my drive from my backup (I'm a little hesitant to do that at the moment, becuase I haven't backed up for a week, and there is still new work I don't want to be wiped out). Thanks for any help in advance!

Use Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper to find out what made your hard drive full.

• Cutting up video

Hey Guys,
I got such good help from here last time, that I thought I would ask for some assistance yet again. I'm sorry if these are very noob questions, but just looking for some insight.
Basically, I have transferred hours upon hours of BETACAM tape to my iMac, and now I have all the raw files on my computer. My goal is to break up each section of video, and add titles and information about each segment. Basically it's 30 years of information - historics events, family birthdays, etc. I want to be able to have this as organized as possible, being able to essentially be able to search "Birthday" and I will have those files at my finger tips. And I must add titles to each segment, just so the viewers (and my grandfather) have a chronological events all laid out.
I'm sorry if this doesn't make much sense, but any help would be SO appreciated.
Thanks guys.
