Organizing/ unable to locate from finder

I am fairly new to mac and I have gone through all the tutorials and FAQ's. I get the concept of Iphoto and how it works. but when I try to find photos from the finder the organization makes no since and I can't find anything. I click on finder then photos them several folders appear ( ichat, itunes artwork, 2005, and iphoto library) I them go to i photo library then there are several different folders (none that I made)with various numbers for names (5,7,9,2) within each folder sits a few of my photos with no grouping since?!?! I need help as I thought this was a user friendly system.... Is there a piece of software that is for macs that will help me make sence of this ???

hi Nathan,
the other posters are correct and I will elaborate a little more because I already have this info copied...
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
I suspect your problem is trying to find images to use in other applications without opening iPhoto. Problem is, iPhoto was meant to have everything done through it from emailing images, exporting, web pages, editing, etc.
More info for you:
iPhoto 5 now stores the Album information in a data xml file. The Albums folder within the iPhoto Library folder is no longer used. At some point, usually after a rebuild, you will no longer have that folder in the Finder.
If you need to access photos from an album it is very difficult for a third party application to navigate the iPhoto Library in order to find the photo you need. You will have to know the date of import in order to find the photo.
There are some third party applications that can read the xml file and can navigate the iPhoto library and show you the Albums. Hopefully more applications will be revised to read this file.
Until then you will have to Share/Export the photos to the desktop. You can then navigate to the desktop to use the photos (example: web uploading from online photo site)
If your application supports drag and drop, you can drag the photo from an open iPhoto Library window into your application.
For email you can also use the email icon within iPhoto to open a message with the highlighted photo attached.
You can also use spotlight to find images in an Album...
This is what I have done using Spotlight to find my images that are in iPhoto albums without opening iPhoto..
In iPhoto, select the album, then select all, go to Photos/batch change.
Change the comments to text. In the text field I put the name of the Album.
Do this for each album.
Close iPhoto.
Open Spotlight and put in the name of the Album ( you have to remember the names of the albums or have then written down)
In the spotlight search results. click on "show all"
Under "Images" click on the "xx more" to show all the images in the album.
Make sure you have it in icon view, the icon view box is the last one on the blue images line.
Now you can control click on the image to "reveal in finder", open in iPhoto or Mail, etc.
I am not sure if this is going to make you happy and it is a little more work, but you can find images in albums and even view them in a slideshow (by clicking the play arrow at the end of the Images highlighted blue line) using Spotlight, all without opening iPhoto.
One important thing to know is you can set up a graphic program to be an external editor (when you double click an image in the library} such as PhotoShop or PS Elements. You set up that within iPhoto Preferences. Just make sure you save the image flattened and with the same name. The edits will then be relected in iPhoto when you hit "save".

  • Disk image invalid at random or unable to mount from Finder

I think I've found a serious problem with 10.4.10 (although it could be an older bug) in verifying and mounting downloaded disk images. In this case the disk images were downloaded from Adobe.
The problem happens at random so I think it is a memory leak bug and possibly caused by disk images that are over 2GB.
For the record, through repeated tests, I've eliminated the network and the source of the downloaded images. I've verified the problem does not occur on an iBook running 10.4.9. The dmg files on both machines are identical both in size and MD5 hash. I've also verified and repaired both the startup disk and permissions.
When mounting the disk image, or verifying the image using Disk Utility the resulting error is either a 'codec overrun' or a 'CRC32 checksum error'. (You might get a similar error if the downloaded file was corrupted enroute.)
Using hdiutil to verify the disk image repeatedly I get the following:

As you can see it's a crap shoot whether or not I can mount this file. The file is valid and mounts repeatedly on the 10.4.9 machine.
In terms of a work around, I can create a DVD of the contents on the working machine and try installing from the DVD. I don't really want to roll back the affected machine to 10.4.9 to test, but this might also be an option to fix the problem.
I checked with Apple Care, but they could not offer anything other than archive and re-install which I don't really feel like doing at the moment.
Note: This may not actually be a problem related to 2GB files. I have a couple of other dmg files around 300MB which randomly pass/fail but maybe a 2GB file starts the problem.
Although hdiutil will occasionally verify the file as valid it seems mounting the image from Finder will always fail. This definitely smells like a memory leak.
Skipping verification and mounting the image won't work as the image will unmount when you read from the disk image at the affected spot.

I can't do anything for your problem, suggest sending a bug report to Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users. Since you already have an Apple username/ID combo, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report. You'll get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.

That functionality isn't available in Foundation.  You have to have SharePoint Server.  Not sure why it isn't in Foundation, but I've checked in the past and its not available and there is no way to turn it on.

  • TestStand Deplyment Error- Error: Unable to locate all subVIs from saved VIs because a subVI is missing

    Hi,
I am a Systems and Software Engineer based in Vancouver. I developed an automated test system using LabVIEW 2013 and TestStand 2013 with custom operator interface.
I encountered 'missing VIs' problem which is kind of weird because I passed analyzing the sequence for both TestStand Sequence Editor and TestStand Deployment Utility >> Distrubuted Files Tab.
But when I tried building the installer and reaching the point 'Calling distribution VIs, it always throw an error saying 'An error occurred while trying to read the depencies of the VIs, possible because the VIs are not saved in the current version of LabVIEW. Do you want to save any modified now?'. I tried both cases (i.e. Yes and No) for this option but it did not solve the issue.
This is part of the original error message displayed in TestStand Deployment Utility:
    While Processing VIs...
Error: Unable to locate all subVIs from saved VIs because a subVI is missing or the VI is not saved in the current version of LabVIEW.
The call chain to missing VIs:
    1 - ATE_AccelerometerTest.vi
    2 - CreateAndMergeErrors.vi (missing)
    3 - LogControl_CheckForErrorSendUpdates.vi (missing) "
All missing VIs are coming from userlib.
    Actions Done:
    - Analyzed sequence file using TestStand Sequence Editor and TestStand Deployment Utility
    - Verified 'Search Directories' include all necessary files/dependencies.
    - Mass compile the directory of the missing VIs
    - Added all needed files and folders in the workspace file.
The result is still the same based from the actions done.
The last debugging I did earlier is that I tried locating the sequence and steps of missing VIs as mentioned above (e.g. ATE_AccelerometerTest.vi)
and I found out that the step seems to be an empty action step. Would this be possible even if it already passed the analysis?
    Other considerations include:
I am using LabVIEW 2013 sp1 and TestStand 2013. We tried building from three (3) computers and we only succeeded once to a freshly-installed comptuer.
Hope to hear from you soon.

    Hi All,
We were able to resolve the issue. First to note is that the release notes in TestStand 2013 is outdated and we confirmed from NI Engineer in Austin that TestStand 2013 works fine with LabVIEW 2013 SP1.
Secondly, we played around TestStand Deployment option that resolved the issue. Attached are the images.
We just enabled the 'Remove Unused VI Components'. It could be one of the libraries (lvlib) we included in the build but we haven't figured it out yet because we verified that all VIs are working. It could be also something else that I think very difficult to find based from the information. However, if anybody experienced the same issue, this could be helpful.
Again, we revert back in using TestStand 2013 and LabVIEW 2013 SP1.
I appreciate any comments and feedbacks. Otherwise, you can close this support request.
    Thank you.

  • Finder is unable to locate photos by Title, only by file name

I was able to locate all my pictures by simply typing words from the title (in fact I did that yesterday morning), but now Finder is unable to locate those files unless I search for the file name (For example: DSC005873.jpg). Why did it stop working? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated as it's a pain in the butt when you've got over 2000 photos.

    Hello oo:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
It would be a complete guess to postulate what happened.
I think I would do a couple of things:
    Run permission repair
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
    Reindex the HD:

Great, that's what I was looking for.  Thanks for the quick response.  I knew that that feature existed in this router, but I couldn't remember what it was called or where to find it.
The funny thing is, I recall distinctly setting up the DHCP reservation initially, but when I went to check it now, the reserved client list was empty.  I have no idea how it could have become depopulated, thus opening the door for internal IP address reassignment of the Remote Desktop computer which led to the RDP ports no longer being forwarded to the right internal IP address and thus the failure of the Remote Desktop connectivity.

  • All my purchased songs from Itunes says unable to locate original file

all of my songs purchased from itunes say unable to locate original file

Did you recently move any files around on your computer. iTunes looks for the files in the original location; if they are moved this can create problems. One possibility is to right click on one of the songs with an exclamation point, and the go to "Get info." This will open a pop-up window that has several tabs.Click on "Summary." At the bottom of this screen, there is a section that says "Where:" This is the path of the original file. Check that location and see if the file is located there (probably not, or you wouldn't get the warning).
Next, I would search Windows for the particular song. Assuming that you find it somewhere, I would bet that is where the rest of the missing files now reside.

I just backed up my 3gs iphone using itunes.  All my photos and contacts have disappeared from my phone.  I am unable to locate them on my computer.  HELP!!!

OK, I understand.  Try this ... it's much safer.  It will simply restore your backup, but not do anything to your iOS:
While your iPhone is plugged in to iTunes, right click on the iPhone icon on the left side of the iTunes display.
Choose "Restore from backup ..." from the pop-up menu that appears.
Again, what this will do is place that backup back on your iPhone without changing iOS.  So you should be very confident in the backup contents before doing this.

I want to make a slideshow to view on my television with image's duration ranging from seconds to an hour or more and I want to use my iPhone or iPad mini to control the television through my Apple tv.
I've been unable to locate an app that will do this.  The Photos app that comes with the phone or iPad has extremely limited duration controls.  PhotoStream seems to load everything from my phone or iPad not allowing me to just load up a set group of images.
iPhoto for iPad is getting some terrible recent reviews.  I tried a couple other free apps but they don't use Airplay.
I can do something like this with iPhoto and my MB Air, but it's kind of ugly to have the computer open in order to connect by Airplay to my Apple TV.  I've thought the iPad or iPhone would be a lower profile controller.
    Am I out of luck?

Thanks for your help.  Since I'm uninterested in loading all my photos (the only option) into photostream, I won't be able to use the settings in ATV.  I guess I'm just stuck with using iPhoto on my MB Air.  Thanks again.

  • ITunes 7.7 unable to locate dataclass information from Sync Services

Upon upgrading to iTunes 7.7 and connecting my iPod touch, I began receiving the following error message: "iTunes was unable to locate dataclass information from Sync Services. Reconnect or try again later."
I followed the steps listed in these articles:
    http://discussions.apple.com/ann.jspa?annID=640
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305415
I am still experiencing this issue. Are there other suggestions I can attempt? I've tried to locate other posts on this topic but it's difficult since the "Discussion Search" box is missing. Thanks! JD

So far, you're right on with the steps. It's a good sign if none of the software is listed in the cleanup utility; that generally means it was appropriately removed with the previous step(s). This utility is mainly for some stubborn or damaged programs that won't uninstall via Programs & Features.
I haven't yet seen a definitive fix for this; different options are working for different people.
    Some other suggestions:
    -Reinstalling the iPod driver
    Connect the iPod
Click Start, right-click My Computer and click Manage
Select Device Manager in the left-hand column
Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus controllers in the right-hand column
Click the + next to it to expand it
Right click on the Apple Mobile Device and click Uninstall
Restart the PC with the iPod connected
    -Working out a syncing conflict
Do you have other devices that you sync to your computer? Either way, try this:
Close iTunes and disconnect your iPod
Click Start, right-click My Computer and click Manage
Select Services in the left-hand column
Scroll down to Windows Mobile Service, right click it and click "disable"
If disable is not an option choose Stop
Open iTunes and connect the iPod
    -Disable any and all firewalls
This may result if the Outlook Sync Server service is blocked
If this resolves the issue, look into configuring that firewall to specifically allow this service.
Keep us posted on what (if anything) works for you

What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
    iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.

  • Organizing photos from finder

Hi!, I am a new Mac user and I organized all my pictures from i photo library in finder; I moved pictures in the Data file and also in the originals; now I can't see some of my pictures in iphoto... what can I do to retrieve this???
    Thank you!!

    susygalleogos:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't have as a positive outlook for you as PhillyPhan does. I don't think rebuilding will help at all but certainly give it a go. What you'll need to do is start a new library and import the full sized image files that are in the Originals folder as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto Library folder from the Finder.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
