  • Importing and organizing video clips

I have a question about iMovie. I've made a few movies with it but am no pro. I am really anal about organizing my photos, music, videos, etc. and for that I love iPhoto. If i've just taken some pictures on my digital camera but don't quite have a use for them yet I can just name the roll and save them in iPhoto. With iMovie it's a different story. Whenever I hook my DV camcorder up I have been importing the video i took into iMovie, BUT it makes me save it into a project. What if I don't have a project in mind yet that I want to use this footage for but I just want to get it off my camera and store it on my computer or in iMovie for future use and easy access when I do decide to use that footage in a project or a movie I am creating? Any idea or suggestions?

One way is to do it manually. When you import to iMovie it stores the clips in a folder inside the project called "Media" and the video files are usually Clip 01, Clip 02, etc. Ya not very descriptive names, but you could rename them all after importing to give them meaningful names. If you don't need the project other than to import them, then import, rename, then drag and drop those to your storage folder(s). Trash the project or use it again to import more.
Then you can create a generic folder structure to help you organize. Something like this...
    Video Clip Archives
    . . . Vacations
    . . . . . . Aruba
    . . . . . . Disney
    . . . Family
    . . . . . . Kids
    . . . . . . Aunt Martha
    etc.
Inside the folders put the clips in. Give them date names or something to help. Like 060798-01, 060798-02 which would be the first two clips from June 7th 1998 and if they were in the Aruba folder then you know they are from a vacation you took to Aruba in June of 1998.
Nice thing about this system is you are not dependent on some application which may or may not be around years from now and in fact you are not even dependent on having a Mac. You could move this folder structure to another computer since the clips are generic DV formatted files, they can be read on other systems.

  • Organizing Videos in iPod

Hey, i just got an iPod Video 30gb.
Well, I started organizing some concerts videos that I got in iTunes. I've set up everything, since artists to Track Number. But when I'm going to play those videos on iPod, they are listed by name, not by track number.
How can I set iPod to list and play my videos in the track order i've set in Itunes?

Btw, shuffling is disabled in the iPod.

  • Comprehensive overview/question about organizing videos and movies

I've made a few movies here and there in the original iMovie, have made a fair amount of home movies using FCE. I have 20 years worth of videos scattered around on HI-8 formatting and some videos I downloaded from a hand held digital cheapo-movie cam. I'm to the point of trying to figure out the big picture on importing, structuring, storing, and sharing these files between iMovie, FCEHD 3.5.1, mobileme, my iPhone, etc.
I'm now wanting to start uploading movies to gallery.me.com. I started doing some of this before I got cancer last year. I'm basically restarting this whole process now that I'm beyond the rigors of chemotherapy and I'm trying to make a systematic approach to managing video files and already made movies. I have a lot of questions and would appreciate any insight you can offer in this discussion forum or if you recommend I copy this over to another discussion forum. I'm not sure to even begin hot to explain all this, so be patient as I try to start this process.
#1 - I've tried using iMovie 8 in the past. I ended up, somehow, with clips here, there, and who knows where. The original iMovie seemed rather straight forward and seemed to work in conjunction with iPhoto rather seamlessly. As iMovie made that big change some time back, I quickly backed out of using that program to manage clips as I couldn't find where they were stored and more importantly, they seemed to start disappearing after time. Is iMove 08 a good resource to manage clips or is it a bit of a dead end for people who are using various programs such as FCE and so forth? Seems the transparency of how the newer iMovie manages files is a bit not-so-transparent to me anymore and I simply am not finding many of the files in iMovie 08 that I can easily spot in iPhoto. Not sure what has happened there, but I can find the files in iPhoto and browse them, but NOT in iMovie 08. Help?
#2 - the only real reason I'm asking about iMovie at all is that I want to start uploading files from HI-8 tapes into my computer rather quickly and make simple basically unedited videos of what is on the Hi-8 tapes, then perhaps transport onto mobileme and/or make some DVD's. I did a few of those somehow before the cancer/chemo deal, but can't really recall the exact steps I took. Rough bout with cancer last year and my brain is a bit fried to be honest, not to mention all of this is a big hard to grasp deal for a RN who isn't trained in video stuff at this point in his life. Besides, I ended up having to reinstall my entire OS - long story. Bottom line, the few movies I do have on mobileme are in .m4v format. Not a big deal when using my mac at home, but notice that it causes iTunes to load onto my pc's at work or when visiting friends. Slow, clunky, and not sure how it wound up in that format. I'm thinking I did that somehow through iMovie or Quicktime 7 Pro. Before I go that route again, I need to ask about #3.
#3 - I just exported my first high definition video from FCE. I did so because we got our first new TV in 22 years, nice HD flat screen. I'm wanting to start understanding options for exporting videos onto mobileme. I got Quicktime Pro 7 and used the H264 or some option like that (file>share). It was able to take 1.5 gig high def video I did over my cancer journey and put it seamlessly onto mobileme. But it is in the .m4v video option which seems to cause some people and computers problems because of the whole proprietary iTunes angle. Is there a way around this being forced to use iTunes and simply share to mobileme gallery using .mov? I tried the file>export option, seems to want to use movie folder and I'm guessing that is another iTunes deal.
#4 - as I load files into my computer from HI-8 format and the newer cheap little HD dual SD card camera I got, those seem to either want to go into iMovie's folders (which I mentioned my confusion about above) or I can manually put them into a file structure that I'm slowly learning to build using FCE. I don't mind the FCE option and it seems logical. I still run into the problem of how to share web based content of the videos. Using iDVD is rather straightforward, but I'm wanting to use some kind of web centric approach to sharing my videos on the output and have one big file structure for organizing my files/videos on the input.
I notice that iMovie has many exporting/sharing options in its menu. Are they really any different/better/worse than what I have with quicktime Pro 7? Should I even try to utilize iMovie at all or simply go with the capture option on FCE? I at least can find the files and organize them with FCE.
I'm not sure how to further word this at the moment as I'm trying to better understand all this as I'm moving forward.
Any suggestions you might have at this point would be most beneficial. I'm sure as I get further into this, I'll start clarifying my own questions and thoughts.
Any resources you can point me to for newer (but not totally new) to video structure input/exporting on the mac?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Robert,
A lot of questions, perhaps to much to go into detail but,
I can second the views of AppleMan
Since iMovie 08 I finally am able to organize and categorize my clips in an easy way. Just recently I made a DvD for one of my grandchildren containing a selection of events from over the last to years. Really a joy (not only the kid ). This would have been a much larger job without that.
When I like to do real "sophisticated" movie editing I use FCE and pick up the clips from the eventsfolder from iMovie.
Of course if you are happy with FCE for organizing (I found that a bit hard), you always can use the File->export-> quicktime movie feature and use Quicktime for uploading to mobileme or use the File->export->Quicktime conversion function.
Also within iMovie you can use the: share ->export with Quicktime, and use that to export your movie in the format you prefer.

  • Which CC program do you recommend for viewing & organizing videos?

Quick Background:  I have over a TB of family video clips.  Some are my own, some are old transferred family films from as early as the 60's, and others are video clips taken at reunions and weddings by family members who have chosen me to make something of them. I've done photography for years and use Lightroom & Photoshop.  Now with my CC account I've been teaching myself how to use Premiere Pro so I can begin working on this family project.
My Question:  Im looking for the equivalent of Lightroom for Video.  A program I can use to import my clips, rename, organize, see metadata, view, maybe do minor editing & trimming, rate/flag, and (maybe most importantly) allow some type of keyword tagging.  Then open in Premiere Pro for more extensive editing.  It would be great if, like Lightroom, the finished project could then be exported into the finished formats I need.
What I've tried:  I understand Lightroom can import video, I tried this with a sample of clips but found LR pretty limited for working with videos (which makes sense).  There are a lot of CC programs that I do not know the function of.  I've been reading a little about Prelude, but I can't find a recent tutorial on Lynda.com; I tried searching "Adobe Prelude" but that only turned up Prelude CS6 Workshops from April of 2012?  This makes me wonder if the Prelude program isn't very popular since tutorials of its updated version aren't available or in high demand? (Searches on Lynda.com for "Adobe Prelude CC 2014" found nothing).
So this is where I thought the Adobe Community would be a great resource.  What are the "video people" out there using?  And what should I stay away from?  I so appreciate anyone who can take time to share their expertise and help me begin this project on the right foot.
    Michele

The issue of changing native folder hierarchy and/or naming conventions has little to do with solid state media and everything to do with the container and header data that links the audio/video streams with the metadata and thus allows the content or "media essence" to be properly decoded and played.  This is the very reason to use a tool like Prelude or Premiere's Media Browser or even Bridge or Lightroom or a third party logging tool like metafuze or shotputpro, or dedicated camera format software such as sony xdcam clipbrowser or panasonic p2 browser, redcine x, ect, as these tools all are designed to parse the captured A/V data and make properly syntaxed edits to the metadata either embedded directly into the media container or in Prelude and Premiere's case can also be written back to a sidecar or associated XMP file, which is a flavor of XML that contains all the original captured metadata plus any changes and/or additions made via these tools.
The dangers come into play when changes to the native file naming convention or folder hierarchy are done directly to the media content via finder on mac or explorer on windows, as changing at that level can break the relationship between the metadata stream and the media essence since the changes are not being written to the metadata or content headers or being handled in a manner referred to as transmuxing..
Prelude & Premiere's Media Browser both allow for looking into the native files non-destructively and safely modifying either the metadata linked to the native media or also allows for a transcode to be done which will then copy or recreate a new media file in whatever format selected along with a new metadata stream.
Prelude is a nice utility and Premiere's Media Browser an amazing tool for organizing, modifying and selectively ingesting media and or making quick selects and assemblies.

  • Organizing Videos in iPhoto

Is there anyway to organize my video files in iPhoto? I hate that when I am looking through an album one picture at a time it just skips over the video files when I arrow over. I would love to just have a single album with all my videos, does anyone know a way to do this or something similar?
If this can't be done in iPhoto, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can store and sort these elswhere?
    Thanks!
    David

You can organise your videos in the same way as your photos - Albums, Events, Keywords etc

  • Organizing videos by year then event in folders?

I organize my photos in Aperture in folders by year then event..2011, 2012, etc. How can I do this in Final Cut....do I create a new library for each year? After a few years of video at almost every event I just have a string of events on the left column....seems this is getting too voluminous to manage without a folder structure. Thanks for your help. Karl

You could even make a Library for each month of each year.  Depends on how much media you're collecting.  Create a Library for May, then create a Smart Collection according to creation dates.
Or, create a Library for a specific year, then Events for each month.  Then inside each Event, keyword each for specific event you shot.
Figure out what works for you.  But don't make any single Event or Library too overwhelming.  And remember, you can hide and show Libraries, so you only see what you need to see.

  • Organizing Videos in folders

Hi, is there any way to organize videos in folders?
So far I have one long list, mixed with movies, videos from various conferences, family videos an so on.
    Thx
    Dieter

    Not really.
For conference videos, you could mark them as Podcasts. That's what I did: All videos from one conference are listed as episodes in a podcast. The Videos app then only shows one icon per podcast - next best thing to a folder.
Not sure if that would work for family videos, though.

  • Organizing videos into "playlists"

I have synched about 150 dance videos to my iPhone 3G OK. BUT I can't figure out how to group them into "playlists" such as Samba or West Coast Swing. Any ideas?

  • Workflow for editing and organizing video with PSE7 and PRE7

I'm quite new to using PSE to organize my videos, and would appreciate suggestions on tutorials or guides creating a nice workflow to keep the growing number of clips manageable.
What I've done is to import my videos into a separate catalog, and I kind of hoped that I could make version sets like with still photos. I can't seem to find that option. Is it possible?
Alternatively, I'd like to just replace the original clip with an edited version, but again I haven't found an easy way to do it.
Any suggestions on how to start are welcome, also if they take a different approach from what I mention above.

I've created an overview of the Organizer and its functions for Muvipix.com. You can find it here:

  • Organizing Video Files

I have run into some caveats in regard to a JVC Everio video camera.
This camera exports video to the Mac in a .MOD file. I have read VLC can play this type of file (not for me it doesn't). I have also tried re-naming the files to .MPG and .MOV. Neither works. Quicktime attempts to play and tells me "This is not a Movie file". I'm trying to avoid using any video conversion application (my attempt to keep this simple and avoid degrading video quality).
iMovie '09 converts this type of file for me. Here is where I get confused. In order to get the files off my camera in a readable format I have to go through iMovie. I don't want to create iMovie projects with every piece of footage I shoot.
I need to figure out how to organize the footage outside of iMovie and just trash it in iMovie. If I ever want a piece of footage for a project, I could then import it back to iMovie. Ideally I want to store all video footage on an external HD. I have found out the hard way if you start moving files around once a iMovie project is started it screws up the project.
This is my plan. Am I doing this the hard way?
    1) Import video from camera into iMovie '09
    2) Find the file in finder, re-name and move to new folder
    3) Move the video in iMovie to the trash
    4) When time to edit footage or create project, import video from the new folder into iMovie

Unfortunately not, but you can send feedback to Apple

  • Organizing videos and movies in iTunes

I have a lot of videos that I want to watch on my iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Is there a way to organize these videos into folders or anything like it in iTunes? I've tried naming the same album name for a bunch of related videos, nothing happened, my movies library on iTunes is still unorganized. Please help.

you can place various playlists into a playlist folder.
And since my iPad haven't arrived yet, how will I see them on it? Will I see folders and then access them to choose which video I want to play? Please help.
we don't have the iPad in Germany yet - go check out the iPad forum. i can tell you that on an iPod Touch you would find a separate entry for the playlist folder under playlists.

  • Separate application for organizing videos?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some software like iPhoto that could be used to organize video content in a separate library. I don't wish to clutter my iPhoto library with GBs of HD footage, and I'd like a simpler way of finding my videos apart from my pictures.
Also, would it be possible to break the association between my camcorder (Sanyo VPC-HD2000) and iPhoto so that the iPhoto import screen doesn't come up every time I sync the camcorder.

The soon to be updated yflicks (http://manytricks.com/yflicks/) is a handy movie organiser. There are others, search on MacUpdate.
BTW you know that when you import a movie to iPhoto it's automatically tagged with a keyword - movie - which makes them quite easy to find and sort separately from your photos.
would it be possible to break the association between my camcorder (Sanyo VPC-HD2000) and iPhoto so that the iPhoto import screen doesn't come up every time I sync the camcorde
You can do this with Image Capture (in your Applications Folder).
as an alternative (that I just thought of), is there a way to configure iPhoto so that every time it opens (without hitting any special keys) it would ask the user to select which library they want to use? Then I could have a separate library for just video on a different hard drive.c
What's a "special" key? It will do this if you simply hold the option (or alt) key while launching.

  • Why do AVCHD (.mts) video thumbnails not appear in Organizer 8?

Thumbnails for video clips imported into Organizer 8 (via Premiere Elements 8) are not appearing for AVCHD (.mts) files.    Numerous online forums show this is a common issue, however other than renaming file extensions from .mts to .m2ts, I have not found any other more practical solutions.   Adobe customer service was of no help.   Other proposed solutions such as installing new codecs have not solved the issue.   Any ideas?

I am having the same problem on both systems that I run Premiere Elements 8 Organizer. All software and drivers are up to date. The only way that I can get thumbnails to display for AVCHD files in the Organizer, is to change the file extension from .mts to .m2ts. In my opinion, that is clearly a bug with the Organizer that must be fixed by Adobe ASAP. Organizing video without thumbnails is next to useless.
If you start a new project and open Premier Elements you can create the thumbnails for AVCHD files with the .mts extension by right clicking each one and selecting Update Thumbnail (which is laborious, at best). However, when you exit the project and go back to Organizer the thumbnails are still not there, nor can you create them. Next, go back into Elements and the thumbnails are there.
    Can you say bug!
Update 07/15/10: I contacted technical support and they said that this is a known problem. The only solution, if you could call it that, is to use file renaming utility to change all your file extensions from .mts to .m2ts. I hope they fix this problem and release an update soon, as all I shoot these days is AVCHD with the Panasonic HDC-TM700K.
