Organzing in I Photo 5

I switched to Mac from PC about 18 mos ago and was turned ogg by I photo 4 because I had about 8000 digital photos organized into folders, subfolders, sub-subfolders etc. There was no way to keep that structure in I Photo 4. Now that version 5 is available, I understand that this is now possible. Can I maintain the structure that works for me, and can I add to rolls later? For example, I may have a folder for my 4 grader's school year where pics of her and friends and school functions would go, but I want to be able to add new photos as the year goes on. Are these two functions available? Based on what I read it seems that they are, but before I buy the new version, I want to make sure. Can anyone help me with this? Many thanks for your help.

Hi jkl,
It is possible, but not in the way you would do it in the finder.
All organization is done within iPhoto by making Albums for your events.
These Albums can then be put in Folders and subfolders.
When you import images from a camera, they are imported as a roll with the name you give it at import and the date.
When you import a folder of images from your HD it is imported as a roll with the name of the Folder.
Next read of one way of importing a folder with subfolders.
Each subfolder that contains images will be imported as a roll with the name of that subfolder. After importing you will get rols in the library view all with the names of the subfolders. You can then make each roll an Album.
You would then make a folder and put the albums that pertain to that folder in the folder.
All this new organization is done within iPhoto, but is not reflected in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. This folder is strictly organized by dates of creation of the images. So once you have imported all your folders into iPhoto, the organization of them in the Finder within the iPhoto Library folder is different than what you do working within iPhoto.
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
One other way you can import a folder of images and have an Album created for it as the same time it is imported as a roll in the Library view:
Drag each folder of images into the source column of iPhoto. When you see the plus sign, drop it in the source column.
An album will be created in the source column, and the roll that the album was created from will be in the library view window.
So now, when the year goes on, you would add the new images to the Album they pertain too.
Hope this helps!

  • How do I uninstall the iPhoto update which does not work on maverick?

How do I uninstall the iphoto update which does not work. ie it tells me my library is locked out and the recommended action by apple does not open the phot library first aid. ? i need to go back to the old iphoto.

Terence, I was trying a way to message you directly - jumping on a recent thread seemed to be the only way (sorry, DEW45).
Terence, you seem to be the foremost expert on apeture and iphoto and have helped me many times in the past (thanks).  I have a question that you may be able to help with (anyone also feel free to take a stab).  I use blogger to upload my photos and host my blog (www.sippingespresso.com).  I spend hours organzing and editing photos - namely, I will enhance and sometimes alter an image in Apeture.  It always saves over the orginal file (at least for viewing purposes), which is fine by me.  But then when I go to upload the photos onto blogger it seems to always pull my dull, original image.  Obviously, I want the newer, bright, enhanced photo.
I'm one step away from importing them, dragging them out of iphoto and into Photoshop, then editing the files and dragging them back into iphoto, deleting the originals and uploading from there.  There HAS to be a better way - please help!!  I've already posted far too many boring images without the beauty of Apeture's "auto enhance".
Thanks in advance, Terence or anyone else.

  • HT201317 can I create folders in photo stream?

I'm trying to clean up my photo stream as there are photos out of date, order, etc. Is there a way to organze them into folders and stay within Icloud?

If you're fortunate enough to have an ISP that also has mail via Microsoft Exchange, you can kill the original account and re-create it as an Microsoft Exchange account. That will bring whatever folders you have set up in the mail's webmail app across to your iPad.
The only downside is that you can only have one Exchange account, so if you already have one set up, you're stuck. But Frontier has my Internet business, so I was able to set up my second account via Exchange.  It's not perfect, but it works.
It's a way to get by until they figure out that POP limitation... :-)

  • Problem syncing stacked photos

I have the latest iTunes and Photoshop Elements 4.0. I've created collections in Photoshop and I'm trying to sync the collections to my iPod. iTunes only sync's photos that are NOT stacked. Thus if I have a collection of 50 photos, but 40 of them are part of a stack, only the remaining 10 photos sync to the iPod.
I have thousands of photos in Photoshop, and stacking is an important organzation feature for me. I don't want to unstack them just so that I can sync them to my iPod.
I'd like to use the collections as a way to sync a subset of photos and keep them logically organized on my iPod. (I don't want to sync ALL photos)
Any ideas on how to solve this?

Figured it out.  Somehow the extension changed from JPEG to JPG.  Changing it back sloved the problem.

  • Importing photos with Info on them

Basically my mom and I have macbooks. On her iphoto I spent a lot of time organizing her library... I thought this is nice i will just share this library with mine and mine will be organized.... Unfortunately when I imported pictures from her mac I found it difficult to drag the pictures over so that they stayed organzed in the same albums... And also I spent a long time tagging peoples faces and not of that info seemed to be transfered over...
I shared my moms macbook and mine through wifi sharing... is there a better way so that all the Faces and other info are transfered over... Basically there are albums and smart albums on her computer I want on mine.

You talk about sharing the library, you talk about importing pictures, dragging pictures over, transferring Faces over, wanting Albums and Smart Albums on here library to also be on yours. Nowhere do you say you want to move her Library to your machine.
    That's easy.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Where are PS Elements 8 photos stored?

Help...I am trying to clean out duplicate photos.  My hard drive is full & HP has asked me where PS Elements 8 stores my photos.   Where does Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 store the photos in my computer so I can clean out all the duplicate photos???

    Hi calpics,
Ken is correct, the Organizer only catalogs the images and doesn't store them in a secret location.
Just to clarify things more, when you use the downloader, then that will copy your images from your card or camera to where you specify. It then adds them to the catalog.
In Organzer, if you use get from files and folders, then the Organizer just records the location of each image it doesn't copy them to a secret location.
In both cases, the organizer will update it's thumbnail database with a small copy of each image.
What can confuse people in Windows 7 is the introduction of library's. Library's are an alternative way to look at your files. This means that if your image is stored in a folder which also is contained within a library, you will be able to see the image using folder views or library views. There is still only one copy of the image.
If you are unsure where an image is stored, click on the thumbnail in organizer and then use Alt+Enter (this will toggle the properties window). On the first (general) tab, the folder location is shown at the bottom.
The organizer will make a copy if you do a backup. As well as backing up the catalog and other databases, each image is copied and given a different name. These backup copies should not be deleted as your restore will fail.
    I hope that helps

  • Photo Organizer and Editor

I'm looking to go away from some of the free editors and organizers, but finding the solution that is best for me is challenging.  For a basic photo / video editor and organization what product would statisfy my needs? I have probably a few thousand photos but also need a way to categorize and organzie them.  Any suggestions and direction would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor is now available on Mac App Store to download. It is Editor only and does not have Organizer similar to PSE 10 Editor on Mac App Store.

  • How to organize photos in alphabetical order?

Normally it was't a problem to show photos on apple tv in an alphabetical order...today it seems, that apple tv organze it just by date of photography. does somebody knows how to solve this problem???

To be honest, I've forgotten whether the photos are ordered alphabetically or by date.
I usually put photos in an album and sort them by Date (iPhoto > View > Sort by) and then arrange them in the order I want (more often than not that's the same order as by date, but not always) which then changes the Sort by option to 'Manually'.
Once they are in the order I want them, I batch change (iPhoto > Photos > Batch Change) both the title and the date (the date only if I have re-ordered them myself). The title I will set to say 'John's 5th Birthday' and iPhoto will append 001, 002 etc in the order I have set them manually. Batch changing the date will also put them chronologically into the order I have chosen.
If I change the date on an album of photos, I tend to set it appropriately. Sometimes it may just be one or two photos that need changing, if for example someone else has given you a couple and the date on their camera is slightly out from yours. Other times I might be quicker just changing them all, so the 30 photos from John's birthday started at noon on February 1 and finished at 3.00 pm will be set to noon on February 1 with each photo adding 6 minutes.
So for me it doesn't matter whether photos are sorted alphabetically by title or chronologically by date, they always appear in the order I want them.

  • Renaming all photos at the same time

Hi - just had a quick question about organzing all your pictures. I have multiple folders from the same trip -- and want to have them all in one folder but cannot do this because I do not know how to rename the whole batch at once...ex: China (1), China (2), China (3)...like a batch change. Vista lets you do this by selecting all the photos (with different names) and right clicking then selecting "rename" this then allows an entire batch change of the highlighted photos.
I tried this with iphoto and it worked -- but when I tried to stick them into a folder it told me there were replicas, meaning the actual properties of the picture name didn't change outside of iphoto...
Does someone know how I can rename all my photos at once so I don't have folders with subfolders?
    Cheers.

  • Slideshow and orientation of photos

I am about to create a DVD with a slideshow of some of my pictures. I am using PSE and PRE both in version 8. Most is working fine except that some (not all) of my photos taken i portrait view are rotated 90 degrees to much. I myself are really not doing anything with this, just using the auto-rotate functionality in my two camera's when the picture is taken (let the pictures be tagged). All pictures are shown fine in the organiser, all ar shown fine when they are displayed as a slideshow on screen on my PC - BUT if I am trying to create a videosequence out of them (by using the create-functionality), some of the autorotated portrait pictures are rotated once again, but not all! (Probably due to two different cameras)
Have found one clue for earlier version: Rotate to and from once - to no avail
    Any other tip out there?
Have tried to create a slideshow/videosequence directrly in PRE8, then I get a different problem as the pictures are not scaled down to the screen size...

Multiple people have reported problems with Portriat Mode photos which have an Orientation Indicator when using the PSE to PRE workflow for slideshows with version 8.  Here are some comments and suggestions based on previous experiences that I have seen in forums and emails.
Have found one clue for earlier version: Rotate to and from once - to no avail
    Any other tip out there?
1- APPROACH 1 -- The rotate approach has worked for other people when
-- that rotate (to and from)is done in the Organzer thumbnail area BEFORE the photo is placed in the Slide Show Editor (of PSE) and
-- when the Organizer Preference of "Rotate JPEGs using Orientation Metadata" is NOT checked
When using this approach you can multiple select the thumbnails of the photos to be rotated.
2 - there may be other possibilies of the timing for doing the rotate that will work.
What I suggest is that you post when you did the rotate and whether it was done in the Photoshop Elements Editor, Premiere Elements or Organizer workspace.
3- FYI - You say that you are unsure why some portrait photos have this problem and other photos do not. If both cameras were set for using an Orientation indicator, then a possible explanation is that SOME of your photos had been edited by the Photoshop Elements editor and others had not. The photos processed by the Photoshop Elements editor are likely to look OK in Priemere Elements. (note: not sure if this is 100% but I am not aware of specific types of exceptions).
3 - APPROACH 2 -- for the slide show that you have already built, you can try the approach of initiating an Edit in Photoshop Elements for the individual photos which have this problem.
For individual problematic photo from within either the Slide Show Editor or from within Premere Elements, select that photo and choose the option to edit within the Photoshop Elements editor, adjust as desired and save.
Note that after your slideshow has been transferred and is in Premiere Elements (timeline and scencline), changes must be made using Premiere Elements.  (you can't bring individual changes over from the slide show editor that you used from Photoshop Elements in to Premiere Elements).

  • HT201269 how do i transfer photos from I phone to computer?

I have 1000+photos on my iphone 4s which were taken before my ipada nd iphone were synced (sp?). I want to create albums one from my computer or delete some. How do I do this via itunes which I have learned is the only way to do it.
Secondly, I an guessing there is no way to sync the  iphone photos  to my ipad which is an a easier way to have photos sent or published. Is that assumption correct?

If you use the USB cable to attach your iPhone to your computer and it contains photos in Camera Roll it will be recognized as a Camera and the standard Windows photo S/W will be activated. You can download your iPhone photos and create whatever folders you want to organize/contain them there.
Itunes is not involved in downloading or organzing photos.

  • I am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier

i am having macbook air recently my iphotos did not open and was showing report apple and reopen but i came to know that by pressing alt and iphotos i open an new photo library and stored the pics but now how can i get the pics which i had in the earlier photo please help me to recover my photos

    Well I'll guess you're using iPhoto 11:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • PSE icons instead of the photo. I need to view photos at a glance. Please help me????

Please help, this is driving me crazy.  I have downloaded my free PSE #9, it came with my Leica Camera.  I cannot view at a glance any of my photos.  There is only an icon that reads, PSE.  To view any of my photos, I must click select and then preview.  This gets old, and I am doing 4 times the work. I am having to use the dates to guess where my photos might be.  I hate this!  My old Photo Shop #5 didn't do this.  When you went to my pictures, you could see every photo.
I have tried the right click and open as any program.  What ever program I choose, that is the icon that appears.  No photo. Still no good.
    Please help.
    Thanking anyone in advance,
    Leica

    Hi,
Are you using Windows Explorer to view the files?
If so, load Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Folder Options.
Click on the View tab and make sure the first option (Always show icons, never thumbnails) is not checked.
Click on OK and see if that is any better.
