Original audio file names in iPod

I notice whenever itunes puts music on the iPod it completely rearranges and splits the audio file (lets say mp3) into many mp3's and into many folders with totally different (and weird) file names.
Why is that and is there anyway to keep it as the original file name?
Preferably I'd like to keep all of my audio files and folders in the same organization as I do on my computer. Am I asking too much?
Thanks

Since it seems as though Im not going to get an answer from Apple, I might as well describe my specific concerns about the iPod.
This discussion was actually from another thread I posted on.
I just do not like how the iPod handles audio files internally. Yes there may be quirky work arounds that may come close to what I would like, but it simply makes things more complicated than it really had to be. Especially since I have a ton of music that may or may not have any tags. And without a unique tag for each audio file I would not be able to import the files correctly. Also I couldn't tier my music files into many files and folders. I can make playlists for each folder, but I cant make one folder for Bach then inside that folder have many Bach albums that have their own folders. And of course, which in turn may have their own folders also.
This is 80GB remember. Thats a ton of music. I do not think its at all reasonable to use the same file structure that Apple uses for there other iPods, it just doesn't organize it well enough to be efficient.

  • File Not Found bug with long audio file names?

    Hello -
Crazy problem. I'll probably post way too much information, but I want to make sure I cover everything. Help!
We run Logic Studio/Logic 8 on multiple 10.4.10/11 computers - G5 Power PC, new intel iMac, intel mini, G4 laptops. We are working on an audio post job using very messy OMFs that were prepared in Final Cut. We had problems opening them in Logic, so we opened the OMFs in Soundtrack Pro, exported to AAFs, and opened those in Logic.
The sessions look fine in Logic now (all files relinked), and the session is consolidated - ie, all files are local/in the project folder's Audio Files folder. I see this in the Audio Bin and can confirm in the finder.
Here's the problem. With the sessions closed:
    (A) I renamed the project folder by adding an asterix to the front of the folder name, and changed the color label of the folder in the finder in order to mark it as the original folder.
    (B) I made a copy of the whole folder (session files & audio files) in order to have something to work from and not mess up the original. When I opened up the session in the new folder, it immediately said audio file not found, do you want to search, locate, or skip. It couldn't find the file in a search, and obviously when you skip, then skip, then skip all, it opens the session with the data (regions are there but grayed) - so all the audio files are orphaned.
So when I try to locate the file, here's what happens. . . The audio file names are really horrendously long (must be some artifact of working in Final Cut). We're talking: "1087-001A SERG AIRPORT WAITING * 1-1channel_00044D02AA9- 363A-4CC5-A86B-0741023DB062.aif" - one bazillion characters.
So the audio file locate dialog box truncates the name of the file that's missing by using the first 20 characters or so, and then a "#" character, and then some random string of 3-6 characters that is not at all related to the file name. So who knows which of the 4-30 SERG AIRPORT files is supposed to go there!
Obviously if this were a 2 minute session file of 10 files or something, we could figure it out and relink everything, but we're talking about a feature-length session with a bazillion files.
    (C) Okay, so I tried to open the original session, in the folder that I had renamed by prefacing the original name with an * and changing the color of the folder. But I started to get the file not found errors. OH GEEZ. So I didn't save. I re-renamed the folder by taking out the * and changing the color label back. Then I tried to open the session again, but I still kept getting the file not found problem.
I have to stress that I didn't move any of the audio files, or change ANYTHING in the session.
So I thought - is all of this because I tried to open a new instance of the session, in a new instance of the folder? Is it because I renamed the folders? Normally you can rename folders, even session names, no problems, and Logic corrects the paths to the audio files!
    (D) So, crap. I reopened the original AAF file in logic and saved it in a new place. I closed the file, reopened it, closed, reopened, just to make sure everything was working! I checked the location of the files in the audio bin, and everything was great.
    (E) So now I copied the folders to an external hard drive to be able to work on another computer. But when I tried to open the sessions on a new computer. . . You guessed it, nada.
So. . . the questions are:
    (1) Those original sessions that now will not work - is there anything I can do to recover their functionality? We had work in there that I would prefer not to lose. . .
    (2) Is this a known bug having to do with the length of the Audio File names?
    (3) How do we get over this? My only idea so far is we could select all in a working logic session and say "Audio Tracks names to regions" or something and will that change the actual file names on teh computer? Then hopefully things would work on mulitple systems. . .
    Okay. HELP! Thanks!
    Polly

    OK I got it.
It is necessary to use prefix "file:///" before file name.
    Thanx everyway.

  • GB2 Audio Files Names

    Hi All.
After watch an Apple Seminar On Line about Garage Band 2, I've decided to give it a try.
In fact I use Logic Express 7.
But I Like the easy workflow and GUI of Garage Band 2 to do simple work like the one described below.
    My question is:
I'd like to use GB2 to convert some old cassete tapes into digital audio to burn a CD.
And I usually create a new GB project and sart to record the tapes into one stereo track.
OK, Now what I want to do is edit this audio file, splitting audio in diferent regions and have for example 2, 3 or more audio files names in the project file.
Then burn them later as individual tracks to a CD.
What I found out is that Garage Band is always a non-destructive audio recorder.
Even If I split the audio, the entire audio file is still there untouched in the project folder.
Is there a way to split the recorded audio in a lot of pieces and have new names for each of them.
With out this function it is not possible to do this kind of work in GB.
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Gordon
    Mac mini G4 1.25   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I kind of knew that GB wouldn't do it.
Well, as I said, you can do it.
The fact that GB doesn't touch the original recording files is a feature, not a bug. It makes sure that through all editing stages, you retain your original material, which is very important. (And I can't imagine that Logic doesn't do that.)
There's a limited possibility to "mix down" adjacent snippets to a new one (and consequently delete the originals) with the "Join" command. For the sake of disk space, it could be a good thing to add a "delete everything that's not used" feature for the final save of a file.

  • Original application file name

    hello,
is it possible to view original application file name while searching document (attached file name not document name)?
is it possible.currently i am not using EasyDMS.
    points will be awarded,be sure.
    thx in advance..

    Hi,
maybe it is possible to create a special classification characteristic which includes the original file name. This file name is normally stored in table DMS_PHIO2FILE. Here you will find the original file path and name.
You can also use report DMS_KPRO_READ. Here you can also enter document data and you will receive all necessary data on the attached originals as PHIO ID, LOIO ID and filenames.
Hope this information is usefull and don't forget to reward points
    Best regards,

  • How do I revert to replaced audio files being saved with the project file, *not* with the original audio files?

In the latest release, when you send an audio clip to Audition, the newly created audio clip - which was previously saved in the same folder as the project file - is saved next to the original audio file.
Makes sense, but for reasons to boring to go into, it's a major headache for my workflow, because it means combing through folders to find the files, instead of having them all in once place.
So how to I turn this off and revert to those files being saved next to the project file?

    Hey Steve,

  • How to find original image file names in Reader?

How do I display the original file names of digital images in Reader? I am using Reader 8. In previous versions I used the "Picture Tasks" button in the menu bar to open various dialog boxs that showed the original file names. I am a photographer and clients often order prints using original camera file names. Currently I have to tediously match images between my image browser and Reader placing them side by side. Would be so helpful to display in Reader the original file names. Help anyone? THanks in advance.

Command-D provides info on the PDF itself but nothing on the image files' metadata. I create PDF docs inside Php CS4 if this is any help. If there is a way in Reader to display all image files' original file names simultaneously please clue me in.

  • How do I move MPEG audio files from my iPod to my library on my computer???

Can someone tell me how to move MPEG audio files from my iPod to my library on my computer? Somehow all my songs on my iPod are MPEGs and they won't transfer to the library. I really don't want to loose the music, and there doesn't appear to be an option to convert the MPEG to a ACC file while the MPEG is on the iPod. Please help....

iTunes/iPod does not provide a way of copying tracks from an iPod to iTunes except for purchased music. But iTunes can play MP3 files without conversion.
Here are some ways of getting files from an iPod to your PC:
    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • Change wav file names on iPod - unreadable

Hi. I was asked to import some important imterviews made on an iPod mini and an ExtremeMac Micromemo onto a Mac, but, as requested, I change the file names first. Since changing the file names the files are completely unplayable, undownloadable and unrecoverable. Please, can anyone help.
    Matthew Whiting

    Hi Chris
What I did was to change the file names of the wav files in the Finder while they were still on the iPod Nano, before downloading them to iTunes. The iPod Nano uses a hybrid file system, and once the file names were changed iTunes refused to recognize the files. The Finder and Mac OS X flags them as wav files but cannot read them. All other software (players, audio apps and file recovery apps) that we have attempted to use, whether on Mac OS X, Windows XP and Vista, and Linux Red Hat has either crashed, failed to read the files or ignored them. Changing the file names back to an arbitrary time, similar to the original, still does not help.
It's hard to appreciate the problem, but two of us with many years of Mac (and other IT) experience spent three hours yesterday, on a total of 6 computers, trying to get something to read or recover these files, without any luck whatsoever.
    Thanks for your interest.
I might be able to get my hands on some industrial strength recovery software, today, and then we'll see. The problem, however, is that the data of the files is intact, but absolutely nothing succeeds in reading them as wav files.

  • Quicktime audio file on my iPod shuffle?

I want to record a story I'm reading.
I assume I can use quicktime for that?
If so, how do I get that on my ipod shuffle?

After recording yourself using QuickTime Player, use this command.
    File -> Export...
If you recorded as a video (not audio only), choose Audio Only for the Format.  When you click Export, this creates a 256 kbps AAC version of the recording.  Find the audio file and open it using iTunes.  iTunes imports the file and it should appear in the Music library.  If you want it to appear in iTunes as an audiobook, do a Get Info on it.  On the Info window's Options tab, set the Media Kind to Audiobook.  You can now sync this item to your shuffle as desired.

  • Audio files on my iPod not in iTunes by my choice

In order to save space on my macbook I would like to load my iPod touch with all of my audio files and then remove them from my iTunes/computer.
This is mainly for getting my audiobooks and video onto my iPod but it's quite a lot and I don't have a need for them on my computer after I load them.
Is this a good idea, is it possible? Will this interfere with getting updates and charging when attaching iPod to my computer?
I don't yet have the iPod Touch. I want it for Xmas but would like to know if this is a possibility before I decide on which model to get.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
    ~Jenn~

You can do this if you manually sync music to your Touch, but in my opinion it would not be a good idea. Are you really that short on space on your MacBook? If so look into getting an external drive.
If you don't care about losing these books and videos by all means put them on the Touch and delete them, just realize if you have to Restore the Touch you will lose all of them.

  • Audio files name

    Hi,
Is it possible to have other kind of naming for the audio files create with the record option of Adobe Presenter.
I record narration on a presentation and I lost de .ppcx file.  So, I have to reimport all my audio.  the name of the audio files are 144076652.mp3, 911255966.mp3, etc...
    I have 34 slides...
I just want Presenter to name the file a better way... Like:
(name of presentation)_Slide01.mp3 (for the audio of slide 1)
(name of presentation)_Slide02.mp3 (for the audio of slide 2)
(name of presentation)_Slide03.mp3 (for the audio of slide 3)
    and so on...
Is it possible to change the way Presenter name the audio files it record ?
I would be very very much easier to reimport the file at the right place.
    Thanks
    Jerome

That's a good idea to use another software to record audio.  But, when my clients rent the portable computer I don't want to explain them how to use another software to record narration.  They want to make it in the easiest way possible.  Adobe Presenter offer it.  Click record...and...record your narration.
I just don't understand why they use number in no particular order to name the files...
    If we had
(name of presentation)_Slide01.mp3 (for the audio of slide 1)
It could be easy that way !!!!

  • How to edit audio files recorded on Ipod

I'm new at this! I'm recording long interviews on my Ipod, which get downloaded as Voice Memos into Itunes. I need to edit those files, and thought Garage Band would be just the program to do it with.  Now I'm not sure it will work.  The original files are in.wav format, but I figured out how to translate them into .mp3 format, too. Regardless, Garage Band won't recognize them. What is the best way to edit those interviews? Is there a way to do it with Garage Band? If I have to look to some other app, what do you recommend? Thanks for any light you can shed!

If they are in itunes, you should be able to just drag them from the itunes sidebar area in garageband to edit them.
If not and mp3 isnt working try converting it into aiff although wav works fine on garageband too.

  • Logic Comp , original audio file length?

Hi I'm new to the L8 Comping function, I recorded 2 take's of a file and before recording the second i shortened the length of take 1. The problem that has risen is that i cannot change the length of take 1 now it is part of a comp track...... wherever i move the mouse it just stays as part of the comp function not the bracket with a triangle in (length adjuster) function i need. Does anyone know how to get around this ?
    MC

Unpack the comp by clicking and selecting the option from the arrow on the upper right of the comp, then adjust the region to it's original length...
Re pack the take folder by highlighting both regions and selecting Region > Folder > Pack Take Folder at the top of the arrange window.
    Hope this helps...
