Original DVD material for FCP use?

How do I copy/download or prep my original content material from my DVD on to my G5 so it can be used with FCP?

If your original material is on DVD-Video, you'll be working with highly compressed files that will need to be demuxed and converted into a video format that matches your FCP Sequence settings. You can use MPEG Streamclip for that purpose.
Or you can connect a DVD player to your DV device and set FCP's Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" then use Capture Now as you would with any other non-controllable source.
But if the files are already in an editable format on a data DVD, just copy them to your media drive then import them into FCP.

  • DVD Training for FCP 5.0, which one???

    Hello everyone,
Could someone give me some suggestions about training in DVD format for FCP 5.0? I am a beginner to FCP and I would like to know how basic stuff works... At the moment, I have 3 choices from DigitalMediaTraining (DMTS), RippleTraining and Total Training (www.totaltraining.com) but I am confused since their offers may be too high (or too low ;)) to me...So please, give me some hints for this. Which one you like to best?
Thank you very much for your time and effort.
    Kind regards,
    James

Run the tutorials and be prepared to be frustrated and confused. it's a big application.
Play with a few simple projects.
Then you MUST do the tutorials again. They will make much more sense the second time because you now know where the menus are and understand of the basic interface language.
Look at your budget. Decide what you want to spend and what you want to learn. The APTS books are great and come with several interesting and challenging editing tasks. The second volume for FCP5, "Advanced Editing Techniques", just hit the shelves. It's fabulous but it's all about the craft of editing. It's not about how to run the application. So if you're making films and never went to school, that's the book you want.
If you want to learn the application, Brian Maffit's Total Training series is, without any doubt, the best way to do the job. I have all of the available training resources for FCP3 through 5. None are as well done nor as innovative and exploratory as Brian's set of disks.

  • Mpeg Streamclip DVD settings for FCP...trying to preserve quality

I'm very new at editing, so please bear with me!
I am creating a director's reel for myself using footage on DVD. I'm ripping the DVDs with MPEG Streamclip to DV NTSC then importing to FCP and finally exporting to DVD.
My problem is--there is an egregious quality loss through this process. Basically is there a better codec than DV NTSC to use in MPEG Streamclip?
I'm having to render my clips in Final Cut which leads me to believe I'm adding an unnecessary step of compression/de-compression. Also, the DV NTSC quicktime doesn't look so bad until I put it in Final Cut...then it looks awful. Am I messing up an import setting?
Finally-- When I load my clip in final cut it loads it anamorphic and I'm having to right click my clip after I load it to the bin, search it's video settings, and de-click "anamorphic" in order to get the right aspect ratio (16:9)...am I doing something wrong there?? Is that messing with the quality?
I realize that this is a basic question, but I literally have spent 3 hours searching for an answer and haven't found one, so please forgive me if it's repetitive! And obviously I'm stuck using the DVDs...I have no option to get the uncompressed original footage. Thanks!!

No problem, we all were at one time. Welcome to the family.

Shouldn't be. But transcoding form MPEG2 to DV can get messy. I use DVDxDV for unwrapping MPEG2 form DVDs.

You should not be rendering in FCP, this suggests your sequence is not set to be plain ol' DV.

If your clips are not anamorphic, your sequence is set incorrectly. Start with a new sequence and make sure it is set to DV.

  • DVD Footage for FCP Edit - how to tell if NTSC or PAL?!

Hi all, apologies if this seems like a stupid request but I have a job at the moment calling for me to extract footage from a DVD, edit in FCP, add a few bits from Motion etc., but I can't work out if the DVD is NTSC or PAL!
I intend to extract the video (no issues with copyright) via DVDxDVPro but am unsure if the DVD has been encoded in NTSC or PAL. The footage it contains is from both the States (NTSC) and South Africa (PAL) so how do I tell? I don't want to go through a standards conversion if I can help it.
I am keen to try to retain as much quality as possible (client can't provide tape) so also any thougts on the best output from DVDxDVPRo for FCP editing?
    Thanks all,
    Best wishes
    Michael

    Hi Thomas, that's it!
Thanks for this - it clearly shows the TV standard and the resolution plus 4:3 etc., so everything I needed for confirmation.
Glad I cheked because it was in Pal - thought the conversion in DVDxDVPro looked a bit ropey.
This realy baffled me - seemed so simple but couldn't find a way to tell the standard. Learn something everyday...
I am using DVCPro for export from DVDxDVPro - anyone thoughts on a better option?
Thanks again for the answer - and so quick on a Sunday too!
    Kind regards

  • Professional DVD Recorder for FCP??

Is there a pro DVD recorder/player that can be controlled like a deck (9-pin/FW or both) for input and output of Final Cut Pro? I often need to capture offline clips of sports events that are 3 to 4 hours long. I've been using Amerisoft's DVD ripper, but I have to capture the each long title of the DVD and I only need a few seconds at a time. Setting up output and doing crash records to Dbeta or similar is also quite laborsome. It would be nice to be able to control a DVD player within FCP and capture the clips like you can from a tape.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

    No....no such thing exists.
Why are the sports events master footage on DVD?
With MPEG STREAMCLIP you can mark IN and OUT points and import only what you want.

  • Uncopyrighted DVD material into FCP

A client of mine has given me a DVD (of footage they own) that wish me to use in a video I am producing for them. Are there any Third-party apps that can capture a DVD into a Quicktime MOV? I have tried Handbrake, but it only does MP4 and AVI. I reiterate I am NOT looking to rip copywrighted material, my client only has access to the DVD (not the original source tape) on which the footage was originally shot. I would prefer not to play off from a DVD player, as that creates an Analog-to-DV loss of quality issue.

    David,
I have seen no visible loss of quality using the DVD player on the Mac, and furthermore the capture from the GUI gives results that are very good at preventing any pixelation. In my experience, any loss has taken place in the compression to produce the DVD (video) in the first place.
However, I will certainly take a look at MPEG Streamclip that the other David mentioned.

  • Best way to encode from mini dvd's for FCP

My mom has a few mini DVD's that she wants me to edit for her. The DVD's are from the Sony DCR-DVD610. So my question is, what is the best way to bring the footage into FCP? Should I use Handbrake, or the MPEG Streamclip, or another program? Also, what settings should I use to encode them for use in FCP?

The "make dv" option in Streamclip works reasonably well for me.

  • Copying DVD contents for personal use only

I've got some instructional dvd's that I want to take with me to university. But the only problem is i don't want to take the actual dvd's with me. I've tried using Handbrake to copy them off, but the dvd's have different tracks.
What I want is a full image of the dvd's that I can load into dvd player and watch them. I've tried using Disk Utility to create an image of the dvd, but it doesn't work as i want. I can't view it in Dvd player after extracting it.
    Does anyone have any idea?
    Thanks
    Chris
Just to re-iterate, these copies will be completely for my own use, and just so I don't risk loosing or damaging the original disks.
    Thanks

    Cheers guys all sorted now.
Used disk utility to create an image and then extracted it and dragged the video_ts into dvd player.
    Thanks for all the help!

  • The best external HD for FCP use?

Just looking for some advice on the best ( reliability & value ) external hardrive for using with FCP 6?
I have a more Pro tools background and have used Lacie USB drives in the past, but should I be looking at Ext. Firewire drives for editing video?
    All feedback welcomed....

Look at quad interface drives...USB, FW400, FW800, eSATA. Cover your bases.
www.maxxdigital.com has the EditVault that I like. And www.caldigit.com has the Caldigit VR that I like. Good solid, great tech support.

  • Importing DVD material to FCP??

    Hi,
I am editing a wedding video for someone but the only format they have the footage in is a burned DVD (vob files and the like)...How can I import this into FCP? I tried downloading the program DVDxDV, which converts DVD's into quicktime files and it works fine on my computer, but whenever I import the converted file into FCP and then burn it onto a DVD (to view it on a television) the quality is terrible (choppy and shaky). I don't have a DV deck, but is my last resort to get one and copy all of the footage onto miniDV tapes and then re-import them into FCP via a deck? Is there any other way to go about it?
    Thanks,
    Danielle

WEll, you are taking an MPEG2, truning it into a QT and then recompressing into MPEG2 again. Not a good workflow for preservation of image quality. If you have to do it this way, there's not much you can do about it. The technology is what it is...

  • Best DVD format for burning Using iDVD '09?

I have created some movies using iMovie with recordings from my digital camcorder. What is the best DVD format to use when burning them to disc using iDVD? I am new to this. Thanks

    I mean, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, etc. Thanks
I have found DVD+R to be more reliable than DVD-R. The only disadvantage to DVD+R is that DVD players manufacture before 2003 may not play them.
I would recommend Taiyo Yuden DVD+Rs. (I get excellent results using iMovie 06 with iDVD 11.)

What is the reason for using something less than the maximum burn speed? Thanks.
    I burn at 4X.
Burning too slow is often just as bad as burning too fast. Rule of thumb is to burn at 1/2 the max speed of the media's max.
"But believe it or not, there are still people who insist on waiting 55-60 minutes to burn a CD or DVD at 1x speed, because they are convinced anything faster will yield a bad or "lower" quality burn. However, burning too slow is often just as bad as burning too fast. Because of this unreasonable impulse to go too slow, some discs and drives now block out the lower range too"

  • Copy cd & dvd for home use

i read recently that the UK was about to vote in a (for lack of a better word) legislation that would allow the "legal" copying of cd's and (more importantly) dvd's, for home use only.
i think this is a wonderful idea, and i have very strong feelings and opinions regarding this. but my question is, is there something in the works like that in the US?
i applaud the UK for their foresight in seeing that the "old" laws do not work in today's age, and would hope that the US sees the need for something like this here.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The subject is perhaps not as straight forward as you might think.
Legislation allows you to make a back up copy of content you have purchased yourself for your own use only, I believe this applies in both the UK and the US.
The issue is that whilst this makes backing up CD's legitimate, it does not do the same for protected DVD's. Legislation prohibits the circumvention of copy protection, and you can't copy a protected DVD (even for back up) unless you also break the legislation on copy protection.

  • LaCie drives set at HFS+ 64KB for FCP

Five years ago I corresponded with LaCie and they told me to reformat their drives at HFS+ 64kb for use with Final Cut Pro. I noted, as well, that when reformatting, using the utility CD Silverlining Pro that Lacie used to include with their external hard drives, that when you chose HFS+ 64kb the message came: "Faster manipulation of larger files or streaming video".
The new LaCies I'm buying no longer include the Silverlining Pro utility CD with their hard drives. What I've been able to do is keep using my existing version of Silverlining Pro to reformat at 64KB.
When LaCie told me to reformt at HFS+ 64KB they said that this was the feedback they'd received from Final Cut users. Can anyone confirm that this remains the preferred formating for FCP use, that 64KB is preferable for: "Faster manipulation of larger files or streaming video"?
While no longer including a version of Silverlining Pro with their hard drives, LaCie does say to go to the MAC utility if you want to reformat their drives in any special way. Unless I've missed it the MAC utility does not give a 64KB block allocation size option. Have things changed in the last few years such that this larger block allocation is no longer important?
    Any thoughts out there?
    Thanks.

Mac OS X Disk Utility does let you set the block size, but only for RAID sets.
    From the Help file:
"To optimize storage performance of a RAID set, you can set the storage block size used by the disks in the set to match the size of data stored on the set. For example, a database might store small units of data, so a small block size might be best for the RAID set. A video processing application might require fast throughput of large amounts of data, so a larger block size might be best for the set."
    Options are 16k, 32k, 64k, 128k and 256k blocks.
    Regular HFS+ has a 4k block size.
