Original file could not be found.  Do you want to locate it?

We tried to connect a second Ipod to our computer and itunes is giving us the following error. "The song (song name) could not be used because the original file could not be found. Do you want to locate it?". We have our songs on an external hard drive and it looks like itunes is trying to look in the wrong place for the songs. I don't know how to give the hard drive a new letter or if that is even what the problem is. What can we do?

It does sound like the letter of the external hard drive changed. If you can remember what it was you can change it back by right-clicking on "My Computer" and selecting "Manage". Then click the "Disk Management" section. (or, if that isn't on your Desktop.. Start.. Run, then type "diskmgmt.msc" and hit OK).
Right click on the external hard drive and select "Change drive letter".

when i try to transfer songs from my library to my ipod shuffle, i get this error message (error code; original file could not be found, would you like to locate it?). Then an exclamation point(!) in the first column it appears next to the song in the library.
When i go to the folder mymusic/itunes/itunesmusic folder, the song is there, but why is there an exclamation point next to the song in the library? And how do I restore all these songs, and what causes this?

Sounds like your iTunes .ITL library file got corrupted.
What are the iTunes library files?

comes in where i want to play a certain song on a playlist and this error pops up "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found.
would you like to locate it? which is of no help.
is there a solution to this problem?

The file path for these songs IS NOT correct per your iTunes Library file.
See: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=listmias  for an Applescript to locate these files for re-adding.

  • When I try to listen to a song I purchased last week, I get the message, "could not be used because the original file could not be found. would you like to locate it?" What do I do to find it?

When I try to listen to the songs I purchased from iTunes last week, I get the error message, "could not be used because the original file could not be found. would you like to locate it?"  What do I do to fix this problem or locate the song?
    Thanks!

I am getting this same message.  I recently bought a new Macbook Pro and the geeks transferred my files from my mini-mac.  Perhaps they did not transfer something critical?  I follow the "locate" option when it asks to find my files and I get a file folder that has a red circle with a white bar in the middle.
I have the same issues with my downloaded movies but my apps all seem to be fine.
Even more confusing - it seems to allow random songs to play and download on my Macbook and other devices.  But most of my music - whether downloaded from iTunes or my CD collection comes up with that message about the original file.
Should I get new geeks to locate these files on my old mini-mac?

  • "original file could not be found, would you like to locate it." error

I recently bought my first MAC and imported my Itunes library onto it using my 3G 40GB ipod. When I try to play some songs in Itunes on the MAC I get the "original file could not be found, would you like to locate it." error message. The songs are on my IPOD and able to played from my ipod, yet they will not synch or transfer to the MAC.
What can I do other than reload the songs from the original cd's?
    Thanks in advance.

  • My partner deleted my itunes (10) library. I use a WD external back-up and retrieved my itunes library, but when i try to play a song i get the message 'could not be used because the original file could not be found Would you like to locate it?'

My partner deleted, by accident my itunes library. I have an iMac 10.6.7, Itunes 10. I use an WD passport as an external back up and retrieved my itunes library but now get the message "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" so itunes is not recognised the exclamation marked songs, how do i get the retrieved files recognised. At times I get fed-up with Apple blocking files being used, although I like the product its restrictions are so silly!

You not only have to retrieve the library file from the backup drive but the actual music files (usually stored within the "iTunes Media" folder) as well.

  • 'Original file could not be found'  Would you like to locate it?

I gotta admit to being pretty sick of seeing this message, when trying to edit/play songs from itunes.
Could someone please tell me where I'm going wrong.
All my music is on an Ext HDD simply because there is more than my laptop can handle. I have changed the preference settings so that the itunes music folder location is this one folder on the HDD. All of the music was transferred to the ipod from this particular folder on the HDD.
However, I almost always have this message pop up. The strange thing is that it also seems random as in, some songs can't be found one day and a different batch the next day! I know that in computer software terms, that doesn't make sense but that is the way it appears.
    Thanks..

    You're welcome!
+the ITunes folder that is automatically created from the beginning and defaults to My Documents, has been moved to the designated music folder in the HD, thats right isn't it?+
Maybe, depends how you did things. If you just changed iTunes Edit > preferences > Advanced tab > music folder location, that only affects future music that you add.
Older files will still be on the default C: drive unless you did the Consolidate library command.
Also, you might have a few itunes database ITL libraries floating around, one on your C: drive and another on your G: drive.
You can open different libraries by starting itunes, and immediately *press & hold* the shift key.

  • Hi all, when i use  itunes , to play  a song this message comes up ,the song could not be used because the original file could not be found would you like to locate it?

    help !

    dwmwood,
Double click a song with ! mark on side, you will be given an option to locate the file where the song is held. If so select "locate" and direct it to the folder / file where the song is and open it.
iTunes then will give you the option to use this process to update all of your library.  OK that as this will do it automatically instead of doing them one by one.
    I hope this helps.

  • Original File Could Not Be Found - Would you like to locate it?  Yes!!!

    Hey Folks,
I notice that Apple basically doesn't support iTunes judging by the number of unanswered questions -- I mean officially answered.
I'm having the problem where my iTunes shows the songs but with the ! icon. When I try to access them, I get the message such as above.
If I say yes, I can easily find the songs right where they were put by iTunes when I loaded them from disc.
There are hundreds of songs in this predicament. Is there a way to fix them in bulk?
Thanks in advance for any help you fellow users can provide.

Is there a pattern as to where iTunes thinks the songs are?
For example, does itunes think the songs are in c:\users\bob\music\itunes\spicegirls\* when the actual location is c:\users\bob\music\itunes\itunes library\spicegirls\* ?
Is it ALL of your songs which are affected?
If so, perhaps moving them to the correct place using explorer might be the better options, otherwise you may be there for a while.
however, ensure that you have you itunes library backed up first before you go ahead with this task.

    Paul
PS: Sorry for the poor taste shown in my example. Worryingly, the Spice Girls were the first thing that popped into my head!
PPS: iTunes has limited support because it's free. iTunes Billing has better support because you've paid for something

  • I recently restored my laptop and also iTunes from an external hard drive, but when I play songs, it says the original file could not be found. How do I locate and fix this?

I recently restored my laptop with Windows 7 and imported my iTunes library from my external hard drive. When I try to play songs, it says it cannot and that the original file could not be located. How do I fix this?

Put the files back where iTunes expects them to be.

  • I have a new hard drive as my old one crashed. Everything seemed to transfer fine except for my entire iTunes library. It shows all of my old songs, but when I click on one it states "the song could not be used as the original file could not be found

I have a new hard drive as my old one crashed. Everything seemed to transfer fine except for my entire iTunes library. It shows all of my old songs, but when I click on one it states "the song could not be used as the original file could not be found.would you like to locate it".
Either how do I locate it, and I've tried every trick I know, or how do I restore all of my songs from one of two sources. I have my old hard drive backedup on an external drive which should have all of my songs, and I have most of my songs on my old iPhone 3S which I'm using as a backup iPod.

The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. In the case of a library moved from one system to another there are also potential permissions issues. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.

  • "original file could not be found" help needed please

    Hello and help...please
i have a new laptop, so i saved my itunes music library to an external drive to transfer it to the new machine. I uploaded to itunes with the simple 'add folder' option and all my songs appeared in itunes everything is great i thought.
However, every single song i click on to play comes up with
"the song "insert title here" could not be used because the original file could not be found. would you like to locate it?"
I have searched long and hard through the itunes help etc and found nothing.
    can anyone help me? please?
many thanks for taking the time
    phill

for windows version, you have to check the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" in preference pane. then every time you add songs to your library iTunes will copy the original files to your iTunes library folder so you don't have to worry about the original files missing or moved.

  • Original file could not be found ----PLEASE HELP

    Hello,
I have 4,000 MP3s on an extrenal hard drive.
When I open iTunes, I would double click on a song, and it would play.
NOW, for whatever reason, when I double click on a song, a window pops up and says: +Original file could not be found, would you like to locate it?+
I then have to manually locate the song, for it to play.
I do not want to do that for 3,999 more MP3s.
I went to EDIT>PREFERENCES>ADVANCE>GENERAL andmade sure the file path is my F Drive (external hard drive) where my MP3's are.
    Still no luck.
The 2 or 3 songs, that I've manually located have a speaker by the title. The other 3,900+ MP3s have and exclamation point by the title.
    Can anyone PLEASE help me?

I went to FILE> ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY and selected the folder where my MP3s were.
This updated my itunes library and now allow me to play every song, but it also made a duplicate of every song.
    Example:
    Kanye West - Stronger
    Kanye West - Stronger
    1 plays and 1 doesn't.
I just have to go and delete the songs with the infront of the title.

  • "song" could not be used bc the original file could not be found

I haven't done anything to my computer and it worked fine yesterday. Why am I getting the error:
--"song" could not be used bc the original file could not be found. would you like to locate it?--
    how do i fix this?
    [email protected]

Make sure that if you dragged any items into your library from media, that the media is still available. For example, if you dragged an MP3 file from a CD-ROM or a network share, make sure the network share or CD-ROM is mounted or available. If you moved the file from one harddrive to another, you'll get this error too.
Unfortunately, there is no way of doing a "mass delete" of all these missing entries in the library. If you could do a mass delete of unfound files, then you can just drag the folder containing the files back into the libary.
