Original file name preserved in metadata but not being found in searches (Mac)

I have a large collection of images (a mix of raw, tif, and jpg files) that I would like to rename. Because some are referred to in other documents by their original names, and because I can't track down every single version that might exist in other folders, I would like to preserve their original (current) filenames in their metadata so that searching for these old names will locate the renamed files.
I experimented by renaming a few JPGs with the "Preserve current filename in XMP Metadata" option checked. While the original filename does appear in the metadata under "Camera Raw," it does not turn up in searches performed using command-f (in Finder), Spotlight, or even Bridge. I have not yet tried this on TIFs or raw files, but:
What am I doing wrong?
Technical details:
Bridge CS6
Mac OS 10.6.8
MacBook Pro
Final note: Bridge does not seem to generate a sidecar xmp file. Would it do this for a jpg?
Thank you for the help!

I tried it and it works for me.  It inserts the preserved filename under the filename line.  You probably need this field checked in metadata preferences.
It looks like the preserved file name is stored in the XMP sidecar data.  I tried a test Find but the preserved filename does not show up.
If one slips up on the batch rename, or go back to original, one can revert to original by going back to batch rename and selecting "preserved filename" in new filenames box.

  • Airport is green, but not being found..

    hi there
ok so i have had my airport express for a couple of years now, with no problems. i have just come back from holiday where prior to this i unplugged my station and modem etc to save power, and to try and be abit greener to the planet.
however i wish i hadnt because now my computer won find the airport station. the internet is definitely working because i tried plugging it directly from the modem to my computer and it works. also my computer is picking up about 5 other nearby wireless networks.
i have since done a factory reset and my computer found the reset airport and i renamed it and set it up again, but as it was restarting the computer lost it once more.
the green light is on, but my computer does not see the airport in itunes, the wireless bit at the top of the computer screen, nor does it find the station on airport utility anymore
does anyone know what is going on, as im pretty stumped by all this.
any hel would be very appreciated.
    matt

I have exactly the same problem. Extremely annoying. Before, I could fix it by re-installing Bonjour after each iTunes-upgrade. But after version 10, that doesn't work any more. Or rather, I can see the AX in Airport Utilities, but it doesn't show up in iTunes. (Weird thing is, it works fine on my other computer, both run Windows Vista).
I guess one answer would be to roll back to an earlier version of iTunes?
Is Apple aware of this issue? It must be a bug in Bonjour. It's been around a long time now. Please fix it!

  • When I export a playlist and then open in excel, do whatever sorting I want, I then save the file and reimport into itunes but not all the songs are there. It appears to be from "comma's" in the song name. Any solutions?

I see songs such as "Monday, Monday" or "Paint It, Black" or even the artist name such as "Fireballs, with Jimmy Gilmer" which have comma's in them, being a problem when I try to do the following:
    1. Export a playlist which contains songs which are all there and play fine, but some have comma's in the title such as listed above.
    2. I then open that file in Excel and bring it in as a Tab-delimited file.  Everything lays out fine, and all the songs are thing (including those with comma's).
    3. I then sort the varoius fields I want (which I can't do in i-tunes because i-tunes won't sort it properly), and resave the file as a newly named file, which is also a .txt file.
    4. I then import that playlist into my itunes. It is exactly the same songs that I just had exported but i-tunes says some of the songs can't be found.
I have traced this problem to comma's in the file name of the song such as listed above.  There must be a solution to this either as the file is opened in excel or in how it's saved or some other solution short of having to rename song/artists without using comma's.
    Thanks.

The additional problem is the file name of the song itself.  Even if I were able to delete the commas or replace with a space for example, changing the file name would result in itunes not being able to find the file.  I would have to go through each file (out of about 15,000+ songs) to find any that have titles such as described in this thread and change not only the song and artist in the fields, but changing the mp3 file itself.
I fear that I am really pretty much going to have to start with a list of songs that have no comma and then do a file compare to find those songs with commas and then just physically moving them into a new playlist I'm trying to create, but this is a royal pain as I want to be able to create a variety of playlists based on these chart dates/peak positions.
I'm trying to sort the songs in this manner:  I use different fields in itunes so that I can put the "peak position" of each song based on Billboard charts, as well as the date the peak position was acheived. I use the "comment box" for that.  I use the "grouping" field for my peak position.
So I end up with something like "10/14/1980" in the comment box as the peak position for a song which is in the grouping field, and so forth.  If I try to sort the comments column in itunes for example, it won't sort properly. If I sort the Grouping field, it will bring up all the "1's", but that's followed by "10", 11, ...19, then "2", etc.  This is why I want to export the playlist and sort it as I want, and then reimport the playlist into itunes.
What I'm ultimately trying to achieve is a year-by-year peak position playlist so that I end up with every #1 song (in this case) from, say, January 1st 1980 and then every #1 song in sequential order for the rest of the year falls in line.  I have chart position dates from 1955 through 1999.  I have entered in all the data from Billboard books I own so I can really create some amazing playlists, but these commas are problematic. Had I known this ahead of time I would have made "Monday, Monday" as "Monday Monday" and not included commas, but it's too late for that.
    Any suggestions?

  • Batch rename files preserving the original file name in metadata

How can I batch rename files while preserving the original file name in metadata? (Don't want the old file name as part of the new file name)
(Adobe CS Bridge can do this with some success, but I don't want to be dependant on this software. Results are inconsistent.)

With a simple terminal script. More details needed, though.

  • Getting original file name to show in Metadata list.

I always convert to dng first thing. Then rename the files with clients name. I know that the original file name is still in the metadata, but how do I get it to show up on LR's metadata list?

Ah. Thank you very much. I figured it was simple, just did not have time to play around to try to find it. I do not often need it, but sometimes my boss will edit a shoot before giving it to me. I prepare it for the customer. Sometimes he has wanted an image that he has under the original file name. So, this helps. Thanks again.

  • Mp3 will not rename - reverts back to original file name. Any suggestions?

I have a bunch of mp3 files that I would like to rename the original file name. Itunes only allows me to change metadata, but to fix broken names and keep organized, I need to change the file name.  Once I rename the file, it shows the new name, and then upon playing it, it reverts back to the original name. I do not have any locked permissions. I have parallels and tried to rename them on the windows 7 side but same effect.  I tried to shut all programs off so the file was not in use. I even tried to export it as a acc file type.  I am exhausted looking for a solution, this is why I am using this forum as a last ditch effort. Please help.

As far as I am aware, iTunes does not rename files (at least nto my older version I use).  Yes, it will insist upon the files being in certain folders which is structured from the metadata, but the files themselves keeep whatever name you use.
I suggest this be moved to an iTunes forum (you choose for Mac or for Windows).  I have never seen anybody else complain about this in the past.
One question, do you subscribe to Match?  Is there anything else using these files, some third party software?

  • Save For Web - saves original file name not new name

Hello, when I use Save for Web with slice(s) the original file name (appended with the slice number) gets saved even though I have changed the file name in the save dialog. This only happens about 50% of the time. Sometimes it saves as expected - with the new file name. I am using the default settings in the save dialog all the time.
Stranger is that if I am saving (for Web) say 10 slices some will be named with the original file name and some will be saved with the name I gave it in the save dialog.
This was happening on my Windows XP sp2 system when I was saving to an Ubuntu server (local network). So when I switched to a new computer running windows 7 and saving to a new server (windows 7 pro) I thought it might fix the problem - but it has not. So there must be a setting I am missing - though that does not account for the intermittency of the problem. I have changed settings under "custom" in the save dialog and things do change except the original file name is persistent not the new name I have given it.
The PSD files come from a designer using a Mac.
    My system:
    PS 10.01
    Windows 7
    AMD x2 duo 250
    4 gig Ram
Thank you for any help you may provide

I made an action to save large batches to a designated "pics" folder. Then when I'm done with a big batch, I just move them to the original folder and let the OS overwrite them. May seem like a lot of work, but I can do a batch of 500 gallery thumbnails in about four minutes and it takes about 30 seconds to move them and replace the originals.

  • Document library: user can see the metadata but not the file itself

    Hello,
For a specific document library certain users will have the right to see the metadata but not the file itself. The only solution I can  think of is using a http handler. But I don't know if I can get the user that requests the document.
Are there any other approaches to this requirement?
Can I get the username of the user that makes that request?
I guess that http handler is deployed at the Web application level - am I right?
    Thank you
    Christos

Nicolas, thank you for your answer.
I think this this is not a strong protection. Everybody can istall sp designer or go through UNC path, like \\myserver\documentlibray or \\myserver\lists\mylist and see the documents- and we use unc paths a lot. I don't want to get into trouble when a (wiki)
    leak is made.

  • Changed File Name but reverts to original file name when exported or copied

I created a folder of 150 photos for a video montage and numbered them all by editing the file name. When I export (or copy and paste) the images to a folder on my desktop, the files all revert back to their original file names. Any ideas?

In iPhoto what you see originally is the file name as the title. Any changes to it remain in iPhoto unless you export out with the appropriate options to either same the title with the file and/or use the title as the file name.
When you export the photos via the File->Export->File Export menu option there's a File Name drop down menu at the bottom from which you can select Use Title. That will give you the Titles you changed as the new file name.

  • Original File Name

"The Bridge Metadata browser will also display the preserved name"
Does anyone know how to actually do that?
More specifically, when batch renaming, there is an option to preserve the current file name in the XMP metadata.  But how does one later view that original file name?  Better yet, how does one sort all the renamed clips according to their original names, thus making it easy to find the one being looked for?

I tried it and it works for me.  It inserts the preserved filename under the filename line.  You probably need this field checked in metadata preferences.
It looks like the preserved file name is stored in the XMP sidecar data.  I tried a test Find but the preserved filename does not show up.

  • Rename PDF retains original file name?

I'm doing a forensic analysis of a PDF file sent from a multi-function printer. The PDF was renamed in Windows by the user but I need to determine the original PDF name as it was sent from the printer. I have used a PDF parsing tool to try and determine if the original file name is stored somewhere in the PDF itself but no joy. Any metadata I can see from simply opening the document in Acrobat Reader shows the printer model that created the PDF but not the original filename. Anyone know if this historical filename data is available to me or I've lost it ?
    Thanks.

By doing a simple save as a user can create a completely new document so your forensis isn't going to get far.  Just out of interest what are you trying to prove?  Someone may be able to suggest another way around it...

  • How to keep original file name in File- Soap- Soap- File scenario?

    Hi Gurus,
I have a requirement as bleow:
There are two PI landscape for two different company and they are communicating using Soap adapter. We need to pass a flat file cross the two PI now, and need to keep the original file name.Anyone could shed some lights on this?
    Thanks,
    Rajesh

Hi Rajesh - See if you can make use of Dynamic configuration bean. I'm not sure if it works but you can give a try..
Unknown use case of DynamicConfigurationBean: Store file name to JMS header without mapping
Adding DynamicConfigurationBean in the Module Processor - SAP NetWeaver Process Integration - SAP Library
Set the adapter specific attributes in file sender channel for filename
swap the file name value to any other soap adapter attribute in the receiver channel using the above module
again swap the attributes in soap sender channel(your second system)
    receiver file channel enable ASMA.

  • Need action to save a copy with original file name with suffix

    Hi All,
I am using photoshop 7 (yeah its old, but working fine for me for general purposes). The problem is I have got this new task where I have to provide 3 copies of the same image but with different portions of it. I have several images (.jpeg) which I need to crop two parts of the image and save as two new image files. The requirement is that I need the copy images to bear the same name as the original and with a suffix to identify which cropped portion of the image is it. example, original file name is AB1001.jpg (1600x1200), 1st cropped image name to be AB1001_P.jpg (200x250) and the 2nd cropped image name to be AB1001_Q.jpg(100x180). I have around a 180 files, so need to do it in a batch, pls suggest how can it be done.
Any help in this regard is much appreciated.
    Regards
    Chhuppa Rustam

While a script would probably be best, photoshop 7 requires
you download a scripting plugin which may or may not install
in photoshop 7 depending on your version.
You can probably do what you want with actions. The file naming part
is not hard, but i have a couple of questions about the cropping.
Are all the images the same size and are the crops in the same position for each?
In other words on the P crop (200x250), is the crop in the same position on each
    image or different for each?

  • Retrieving original file name

Recently changed file names and now need to revert back to the original file name created via camera.  Can this be done in LR 4 or is this info deleted?
    Thanks!

It depends on where you did the rename.....if you did it in Lightroom then yes the original file name is retained (see the Metadata Panel for old and new names). But if you renamed before importing, then no, Lightroom will have no record of the original name.

  • Error of "Could not save (file name) because write access was not granted

Error of "Could not save (file name) because write access was not granted. The users are pulling the files from a Mountain Lion server. They all have read\write access. If they try to save the file in the same directory they get that error but they can save it anywhere else on the sharepoint. If they save it in another directory then reopen it make a change and do a save as they can save it back to the original directory. Has anyone else come across this same issues

It is an enterprise solution. I just do not see why you cant save directly to the server. It seems to get weird errors. Some Adobe stuff saves fine on the server and some of it doesnt. It seems Adobe related. The permissions on the server are set correctly so it isnt a permission error
