Original files in two locations

I had to reinstall Windows XP, and in doing so my computer "name" changed (from my name to "administrator"). When I reinstalled Lightroom (my data files were back on the computer and were immediately available in the program), many of the images have a question mark on the top right-hand corner. When I click on them, I get a message that the the photo "could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to find it?"
How can I get all my files back to one location? I'm a beginner: please give me step-by-step directions. Many thanks!

Under FOLDERS and My Pictures folder, and within it I have about 10
folders, 2000, 2001, etc. Within each are photos grouped by date.
When I right click on a year, 2005, for example, I get these 5 options:
Create Folder
Rename
Delete
Show in Explorer
Check for Missing Photos and Folders
No Update Folder Location or Show Parent Folder
When I right click on My Pictures or a date within the year folder, I get
the same options.

I have just restored data from an external hard drive, but half of my iTunes songs are getting the error "original file cannot be located." Where are these files?

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

Ok now I get your requirement.
you cant achieve this - how one receiver channel can put in two location if you dont have a dynamic configuration defined i.e Adapter specific attributes.
easy way - involve IR mapping
else
have a adapter module to define your dynamic configuration.

Using smart previews on iMac to control two sets of identical original files on two external drives --- render previews setting when using smart previews

I’m just getting started with Lightroom and if someone can help me I’ll be very appreciative.
I’m using an iMac with a 1TB drive and two external 2.5 TB drives for backup. My active files are on all three drives and I’m running out of room on the iMac drive.
With the smart previews capability of Lightroom 5, I’m hoping to remove all the active files from the iMac drive. I hope to import existing images into the LR catalog from two identical drives with identical folders and have both sets of images reflect the changes I make using smart previews on my iMac.
I just created two identical test folders of junk images on the external drives and was following a beginners tutorial on importing. However, I see nothing about using smart previews on my iMac that, when connected, will update more than one external drive at the same time.
I’m also wondering if, when using smart previews, it matters how I set the render previews during the import process.

I don't see any way to use smart previews to update both external drives at the same time. The smart previews are linked to a specific set of images. But it seems to me that if both drives are in fact identical, once the catalog is updated when one of those drives is connected those changes should also apply to the files on the other drive. It's actually the catalog that gets updated, not the images. Smart previews and regular import previews are completely unrelated. How you have your import previews configured will have no effect on your smart previews.
Incidentally, in order for my suggestion to work it would be necessary to only have one of those external drives connected. And when the other EHD is connected it would have to have the same drive letter or name. In other words it would have to appear to the iMac that it is precisely the same drive.

Songs in my itunes don't play anymore. It says it can't locate original files. HELP please.

The songs in my itunes no longer play. I have never had this problem before. I was trying to update playlists, etc. and the songs were not transferring to my Iphone. The error message for every song is that the original file cannot be located. It asks if you want to locate file. I press yes, but it says that it is not available. Does anyone know how to either locate the files or reinstall the music.

If the upgrade to Vista somehow erased the files, you'll need to restore them from your backup or, if a feature of the country you're in, download the content again from the iTunes Store. See:

Note that movies can be re-downloaded only in the US as of right now, and then not all movie studios have granted that license.

Cannot locate original files

All of a sudden, today, I cannot play my music files that were downloaded from cd's, message that the original files cannot be located. Is there a way to fix this?, without redownloading hundreds of cds?

Downloaded a music file which originally played through my playlist, but now says it cannot find the original file associated with it. Takes me to the root directory, but this does not help.

It asks if it should search for the relevant file which takes me to the root directory and is no help.

You would need to locate the song on your computer to link them back up so it will play. If you cannot find it and it was purchased from the iTunes Store, you can delete the track and download it again for free.

I moved my iTunes library to my external hard drive some time ago and I followed the directions listed here on the apple support page. It did copy my library and now is on my hard drive... I can open iTunes and use it to sync all of my devices but I would like to play my music... I can see all of my music files but can not play them if I click on an album or song it says the following: "(file name) could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it?" I click locate but do not know where to go from there? I need a way to access all files and not to hunt down one at a time on my hard drive... I am pretty sure I deleted the original library to make space on my internal drive which was the reason for moving it. I have tried and tried to fix it and do not have a lot of time to do so with a one and two year old at my house who do not like it whenI sit down at my computer. What to do??? Any help is much appreciated!!!

See Make a split library portable. Move all of the bits of the library together in the the correct shape and it should work. Or undo exactly what you did and then start over.
If you're a former Windows user don't try merging two folders together that have the same name by dropping one into the same folders as the other, as that goes badly on a Mac.

I downloaded something that was told to me to get to put some of my itunes songs onto my android phone. I think it synced my account, though. Tunes works through a database file which has a list of your tracks. When you click on a track it looks up in the database which file it needs to play, then plays the file. If something breaks this link then you get ! The two main ways to get ! are to move a file from where iTunes expects it to be, or to delete it altogether. I don't know which has happened in your case. You can try using Spotlight to find a file for the one referred to in a broken link. If the files have been moved then they need to be moved back. If they were deleted completely you will have to restore them from a backup or download them again from the iTunes Store and rebuild your library.

Is there a way to easily locate original files in iTunes after moving everything to an external harddrive?

I recently moved my itunes folder (everything including library and music folders) from my computer harddrive to an external harddrive. I was able to find the library and it opens, but the music (all 7000+ songs) gives me this error. "The song “Beautiful People” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I know I cannot go and hand pick each artist folder and song, but this would take me forever! I have also changed the location via the preferences. I know all my music is in my folder on the external drive, so is there a way to easily fix this?
My path looks like External drive--Music folder--iTunes folder...Inside this folder are hundreds of folders (every different musician has its own folder and if there are two or more cds by same artist they are within the artist's folder) and my itunes library files and my automatically added to itunes folder and several itbd folders etc.

My computer crashed, so I bought a new laptop. I have everything backed up on an external hard drive. I tried to transfer everything from the external drive to my new laptop, and now all of my music appears to be listed in itunes. However, when i try to play a music file I'm getting an error that says the original file cannot be found, would you like to locate it? Any ideas?

Select a broken track and press ctrl-i to Get Info. Look on the summary tab for the location where iTunes "thinks" the file should be. Where is it really? Post back the two locations and I can suggest the best approach.

Why is iTunes asking to locate the original file if I'm using Match?

I have two locations for my audio files: my laptop and an external harddrive. With my external hd plugged in, I ran iTunes Match, so my songs are listed as Purchased, Matched, or Uploaded. But, iTunes won't play any songs where the original files are on the external hd. I thought the point of Match was so you didn't have to have all your music on your computer.

With iTunes Match enabled the location of the music library is not changed to the cloud. The local files stay exactly where they were, and iTunes keeps looking for the files to play. If the external HDD is unplugged of course iTunes can't find the file to play it.
If you want to stream the best practice is to create a new, empty iTunes library and enable iTM on that library. To create a new library launch iTunes while holding down the Option key then select "create new library." Do not have iTunes scan for media. Enable iTM and you will now be able to stream.

ITunes unable to locate original files

I just moved the 'iTunes Music" folder on my hard drive on to a second larger hard drive that is internally located in the same computer because there was not enough space for all my video on the smaller drive. I didn't want to separate my music from my videos, so when I moved the whole folder, I went into preferences and changed the location of my library to where it was on the new drive. All of my videos instantly worked and I didnt have to go threw and relocate them manually by browsing, but all of my songs are not working, and it says it cant find the original file. I could browse and locate them manually but that would take a long time because I have over 2,000 songs. I have iTunes version 8.1.1 if that is relevant.

I switched computers and tried to reload all my backed up itunes files. It loaded the files fine the first time. After I logged off the files disappeared from my Itunes. Apple tech told me to add itunes folder to library. It worked fine until i logged off again. I tried it several times because my files never stayed on itunes. Finnaly I added two new CD's into my library and I went to file Libray and I entered consolidated Library. This brought everything I had before and then some to my itunes library. I logged off, shutdown and even hibernated and my files still remain. I was able to create playlist, my movies, podcast, there all there. Hope this helps.
