Original HD died

the original 30 gig HD that came w/ tower back in 99 has died. I thought it would have gone a long time ago - so I had added a 60 gig and a 250 gig and made the 250 the main start up HD. Now that the original 30 has died and will not show up on the screen nor can I reformat, etc. - can I remove it without any problems to the comp? It is in the original start up bay (if there is such a term). The 60 uses the power etc. cable that piggy-backs from the old 30 (not sure if that makes sense).
Currently when turning on the comp - it says cannot read disk installed - do you want to...... I would like to get rid of the drive and not have to read that any more.
Thanks in advance for any help.
~bruce.

1) Partition your hard drive or add an external drive and install Snow Leopard (with the Optional Rosetta) into it and then you can dual-boot (System Preferences:Startup Disk) into Snow Leopard and run FCE 3.5 there.
2)  Use one of the following methods to install FCE 3.5 into Mavericks:
a)  Pacifist:  http://www.charlessoft.com/
b)  Jeremy Johnstone's Terminal method:  http://www.jeremyjohnstone.com/blog/2012-03-11-installing-final-cut-pro-studio-2 -0-on-mac-os-x-10-7-lion.html
Reports on this forum seem to confirm that Final Cut Studio 2 will continue to operate in Mavericks once it is functionally installed, albeit some plug-ins may fail to function.  FCE 3.5 is the same generation as FCS2, and presumably will continue to operate in Mavericks, as well.

  • Original monitor died (lots of smoke)

I recently aquired a "Yikes" G4, complete with a bloody huge fifty-pound monitor, which had been sitting in storage for the past five years. I fixed the original problem with the computer, blown out a few cupsful of dust, and fired her up.
The monitor, after roughly two hours, went BANG and smoked up the place.
    Okay, here's the questions:
    1. The computer has two identical video cards, both of them identified only by a ATI Rage 128 logo on one side. I assume they are both ATI Rage 128 Pros, but one - the one located in the #1 slot - has an odd attachment. A sort of bridge with "Apple Computer, Inc. c 1998 820-1012-A" on it's only visible side. It's a small card which is attached to a series of prongs across the top of the video card and is locked in place with two small column shaped places supports. The second card in the #3 slot lacks this widgit, but is identical to the first card in all other aspects.
***, people? Any explanations for what I'm looking at?
    2. Replacement monitor ... any suggestions? While working on it, since the original monitor "popped," I've had it hooked up to my wife's HP monitor, but - given the slight wave and bad look to the edges of the image - I can't imagine that this is very good for that monitor. What CRT monitors should I be looking at and does anyone know what sort of flat screen this particular card will support?
    Thanks for all your help
    G4 (pci)   Mac OS 9.2.x

The interesting looking Rage 128 you are looking is likely to be a Mac OEM card, as for the attachment, it might be the DVD decoder that the PCI based Rage Pro's needed to have to have for DVD playback, if you machine has a DVD drive.
As for a monitor, most 15" or 17" CRT or LCDs should work fine, maybe even some 19" or 20" models also.

  • I want to connect my personal iPhone 4 to my work computer as my original computer died. I do NOT want the dates or contact from the Outlook Calender on my phone though it says I need to make a contact or it will delete what I have on my iPhone. ?? help!

So how can I sync and not lose my contacts/calendar, I am confused.

Another thing to remember is the phone is actually usable for 911 calls and maybe others. Not a real good idea. Especially for a child.
It would depend however on the age of the child.

  • How do I unlock my original iPhone to be used as a backup to my iPhone 3G?

    Hey Everyone,
    Some background:
Back in July '08, my original iPhone died. This occurred 2-3 weeks after the 1 year warranty expired and the Genius at my local Apple Store was kind enough to still replace it with a refurbished one. However, before I met with the Genius, I bought an iPhone 3G (which is what I'm using now).
    My question:
The refurbished iPhone came with firmware 1.1.4 and is useless because it keeps showing the 'connect to iTunes' image. How do I unlock it so I can use it as a back-up to my iPhone 3G?
Right now, it's just a paper weight. When I first got it, I was hoping I could connect it to iTunes to unlock it but I stopped it half way through the process because it started to cancel my iPhone 3G data plan (to replace it with the EDGE data plan). In fact, I had to go to an AT&T store to restore the data plan on my 3G.
FYI, I have no desire to jailbreak it or unlock for use with other mobile carriers. I just want to unlock the phone so that I can use it with my current AT&T plan. I also did a quick Google search an all the articles I found were for jailbreaking the iPhone.
    Thanks!

Ok, weird. After starting this thread, I plugged my original iPhone into my MBP and iTunes displayed a message saying the firmware was too old to synchronize. It suggested that I upgrade the firmware. Instead of continuing, I chose to eject the iPhone and now it's activated - i.e., I can use the iPhone and access the apps (except for the ones that require a data connection). So, I guess I'm all set.
Hopefully, iTunes didn't screw up the data plan on my 3G (I don't think it did since it didn't show any message of communicating with AT&T's servers).

  • New Hard drive and no original OS install disks to hand.

    Hi,
Just installed a new WD hard drive after my original HD died after 2 and a half years of use, unfortunately I do not have my Tiger disks to hand. Do I have to buy the full Snow Leopard Box Set to install with no previous OS system or could the SL upgrade work? I am not really interested in iWork etc. Thank you.

you need to buy the box set. another option is to buy leopard and a snow leopard upgrade disk. also, you can call apple and request a replacement Tiger disk. they will provide one for a nominal fee.

  • How to recognise an original replaced battery

    Hi guys,
I have a late 2009 MacBook Pro, 15", model 5.3, who's original battery died and has just been replaced by an Apple consultant (a third party, or private Apple authorised repair guy).
Right now, the fully charged battery shows anywhere between 3 and 6 hrs of juice left, depending on the type of operation performed.
Yet, I couldn't help noticing that in Power panel of System Information, the battery manufacturer says SMP, so I wonder if this is really an original Apple part or not.
Do you know how to recognise an original battery after replacement?

SMP is the manufacturer of Apple batteries. So you purchased the 'real thing.'

  • Looking for original OS for my Aspire 5520.

I contacted Acer about getting a set of CD/DVD's with the OS to format to original store bgt system.  The original HD died so can't get it to reload and make it like it was the day it came off the store shelf.  But they said they don't have a copy that was used to set up my laptop which I can't really believe that i true.
For the record the SN# 8090104***.  Don't get me wrong I have several different copies of Vista 32 and 64 plus copies of Win 7 32 and 64 the Pro versions with SP1 all with the keys to each of them too but would like to get the original setup that was used to set it up in the first place.
I was thinking of setting it up for my 7 yr old Grand daughter with learning programs like I did for Her older sister back in 2008.

    TheSouthernGent,
I have done some checking around and unfortunately we just do not have the recovery media to make for that system any longer. I have even asked my software engineers if they could check their cabinets where the older media is located most of the time, but they do not have the software in there.

  • Can pictures on the web be saved with their original filenames? Thanx.

    Greetings.
Just wanted to know if its possible to save pictures on the web with their ORIGINAL FILENAME while saving to the iPad.
    Thanx for your advice.

What you see in Lightroom - are just previews, that were built before dropping your Passport. All you have are JPEG-compressed previews, your original RAWs died with your external HDD. You can get those previews from Lightroom's preview cache using a tool like LRViewer.
I don't think you can create a web gallery from withing Lightroom. Lightroom will need to have the original master files in order to build a gallery. That's even if you have high quality previews prebuilt. So, again, if you extract the previews with LRViewer, save them as JPEG files and import into a Lightroom catalog instead of your DNGs - you will be able to upload a web gallery.

  • New MacBook Air SuperDrive for G4 PowerBook

My G4 PowerBook is still going strong except the original SuperDrive died a few months ago. While watching the MacWorld 2008 Keynote, I see that there is now an External MacBook Air SuperDrive option available for the new MacBook Air for $99. Does anyone know if this external Superdrive will work with the G4 PowerBooks?
    Thanks.

Hi, DLaid, and welcome to Apple Discussions. You could replace your internal Superdrive yourself for $50-S75 USD (depending on what drive you chose) and an hour of your time. See the link in my post above. Buying an external optical drive to use with a portable computer would be silly, but if you wanted to do it anyway, there are dozens to choose from besides Apple's. As I explained above, a USB-only drive is totally inappropriate for use with a Tibook, even if it would work. Get a FireWire-capable drive if you buy an external.
Be aware also that when you post in these forums, you aren't talking to Apple; you're just talking to other Mac users like yourself. The people at Apple who need to hear your concerns don't monitor these boards. This is explained in the "Help & Terms of Use" link that appears in the right sidebar of every Discussions page. Your second-paragraph gripes would be more usefully addressed directly to Apple through the appropriate Product Feedback channels:

  • Downloading music from existing ipod to computer not using iTunes

I was told from Apple tech support I would be able to find help here. I need to find a third party download source to download my iPod to it and then upload all of my music to iTunes. Long story short - original computer died, new computer won't recognize my iPod and it's musice - hence tech support and third party download software. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, how did you resolve?

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Help, I am about to pull my hair out, can't get into a locked drive and Time Machine problem

I've screwed everything up, I think.  I had Time Machine doing backups to an external 500Gig drive and somehow it got locked.  I went into Get Info to try and change the access but it won't allow me.  On top of this problem, my original drive died and I can't get into Time Machine to restore.  When I click "Enter Time Machine", nothing happens.  I created an eDisk and a startup disk to another external drive that I'm using now, but since everything that's been backed up is on the other drive that I can't access.  When I try accessing the drive it gives:  "The folder “G-DRIVE ” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents."  I'm not knowledgeable enough to work from the command line, so if I need to do that to access the drive, please walk me though it.  As for the Time Machine problem, I have no idea how to recover anything since it won't even come up, it just sits there.  Outside of blowing my brains out, I don't know what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I can't afford to take it to Apple to let them try and fix it.

Hello, not sure how this might affect a TM drive, or not, but...
Here is what i needed to do for my drive "320GB HD", the last command is just for clean up
Open Terminal and type these commands carefully with the spaces & change 320GB HD to the name of your drive.
    sudo chflags 0 "/volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo chown root "/volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo chmod 1775 "/volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo -k
That said, these should be sufficient to do the job:
    sudo chflags 0 "/Volumes/320GB HD"
    sudo chmod a+rx "/Volumes/320GB HD"

  • ITunes purchased when restored from back-up wants me to authorise each one

Original pc 'died' - hard disk error but I managed to back-up my ITunes libraries to an external drive. I have copied the contents to my new laptop but they are not appearing on my ITunes library (similar to HUGGYUK previous problem). When I attempt to play the music which I had already paid Apple for on my old pc, it keeps asking me to 'authorise' each item. I then attempt to sign in and it does not recognise my sign-in although I can use this sign-in to access the ITunes store. So I now have 'bought and paid for' 1100 records approx which I cannot use.
    Help,please

Taking the first issue. If you copied the iTunes folder from your old PC onto the external disk, and you had all your tracks in the iTunes Media folder in the iTunes folder, then it should be very simple.
In order to check if things will work - that is to say this is a test not the answer.
Plug in your external drive. Then hold down the shift key and start iTunes. Keep holding the shift key until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
If you do this, do you get your old library back as it was on the old PC?
You can switch back to your internal drive again by repeating the shift key start and choosing iTunes Library.itl in the iTunes folder on the internal drive.
On the authorisation issue, did you try the things I suggest adn if so what was the result?
Tracks bough from the iTunes store some time ago were DRM protected so the PC needs to be authorised to play them. The tracks will be Protected AAC files if you look on the general tab in Get Info and the files will have the extension .m4p.
More recent purchases are not DRM protected and will show as Purchased AAC audio file.

  • How do I connect the ipod nono 7th gen. to Panasonic home theater sound system

I ordered an ipod nano for my daughter for christmas as her old original ipod died. She has a Panasonic home theater sound system (SA-PT950) that came with a little dedicated ipod station to connect her ipod to and get surround sound music. Now I see the 7th gen. nano has a different interface and won't work in this station. Is there an adapter available or does anyone know another way to connect it? Thanks
