Original iPad, 18 months old, battery failing: replace battery or replace iPad?

At this point in Apple's product life cycle, can I expect the greatest utility by a) replacing the battery in my original iOS 5 iPad,  getting another 2 years use out of an end of life system, b) buying a refurbed iPad 2, c) buying a new iPad 3, or d) limping along until the next-gen iOS 7 iPads arrive, probably in October 2013?
At this time I can't say whether ios7 will run on the iPad 2 or iPad 3. Assuming the iPad 2 has no upgrade path, I don't think that's a viable option. I would expect the iPad 3 will upgrade to its 7, so that's a viable choice, but it's about $ 300 more than the cost of replacing the battery, and it leaves me with an unusable but otherwise perfectly good iPad.
Replacing the battery costs $110 from Ap,ple, or about $30 if I dare to do it myself. This presumably would give me another 2 years of battery life at low cost.
My concern is more with long-term support for iOS 5. I had a wake-up call a few months ago when one of my daily go-to apps, Zite, updated in the App Store to iOS 6 only. CBC's news app also went iOS 6 a few days ago. I still use the iOS 5 version of these apps, but the underlying online services may change, rendering the apps unusable. Both apps still appear as updates in the App Store, each with a note indicating they are iOS 6-only updates. How long until the rest of my favorite apps go iOS 6 only in the App Store?
If I lose the iOS 5 version of an app, either through a crash, OS corruption or accidental deletion, or I haven't properly backed them up (or more likely forgotten where I backed them up!), I'm hosed, because the original iOS 5 apps are no longer available from the App Store.
Gotta end this post here, because my battery's down from 35% to 10% in the 40 minutes or so it took me to write this post. Any suggestions are welcome!

Replace the battery and then sell the iPad.

  • MacBook Air, 2 months old, battery can't keep power

Macbook air , 2 months old, battery cannot keep power. Using it for less than30 second, all system black out. it can be used only when plug in wire.
also battery charged very slow, 8 hours for 30%. The next day i charge another 8 hours, got another 40% so total battery is about 90% but when take of the wire, computer black out like no battery left again.

There are many third party batteries that are at best suspect.  I have seen on Amazon what appear to be legitimate OEM Apple batteries which I suspect are graymarket products.  You may try that at your own risk.  If you purchase from Apple. you will know what you will be getting and with a warranty.
    Ciao.
OWC has what appears to be a battery that will fit your MBP.  They are a reputable vendor for Mac compatible products,

  • Should I be worried about my 5 month old battery?

I bought a new battery for my 15" 2007 Macbook Pro in October (2009), and I've been noticing a steep decline in quality lately. In the first three months, I lost 10% of my battery power, and seem to have lost quite a bit more in the past two months. I try to calibrate tri-weekly (once per three weeks).
The problem is, every now and then, the battery jumps up to around 85% randomly for a few days, until it decides to return to 70-75% jumping range.
I guess because I'm not entirely sure about my rights, I'm wondering if it is a faulty manufactured battery or if I am just screwed and will have to buy another battery probably at the end of the year when this one is barely usable.
    Model Information:
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0001
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3941
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 4106
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 72
    Condition: Normal

    KeferSage,
It sounds to me as if the battery is developing a problem in one its cells, which is operating intermittently rather than consistently. I would take it in and get it stress tested at an Apple AASP or Store. This should reveal the problem. As it is less than twelve months old, assuming you bought it through Apple, it should be covered under warranty under the 300 cycle / 80% of maximum capacity rating anyway, but if it fails the stress test at this age they will almost certainly not even be concerned about such things unless it had completed more than 300 cycles.

  • Iphone 4s 2 months old battery drains

my iphone 4s is 2 months old and the battery goes from 100% to dead within 2 hours.. the problem started this weekend.. using version 5.1.1   Location services are off, brightness is at 40%.  I haven't downloaded any new apps..

Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. At end when prompted, Set Up as New iPhone. See if the battery is better. If still problem, all iPhone 4S have full Warranty, make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • Six month old battery dies at 30%!

    Hi all!
Just under six month ago (mar 10. 2007), I replaced my battery on my PowerBook G4. Now the battery dies on me with 30% left according to the "energy icon". This is a pain in it self, but to make matters worse I do not get a warning saying that the battery is running low. This is a big pain since I cannot shut down the computer before it, just out of the blue, goes to sleep. I have noticed that the percentage sometimes goes from e.g. 47% to 59%, and as said 30% to sleep.
Could it be my settings, could it be a problem with my machine? Any suggestions will be more than welcome...

PS: I wanted to write a complaint to Apple, because I do not think that it is fair that their batterys only works properly for five months, but it seems that you cannot contact Apple in writing!? Any one knows of a way to do this?

What you describe is a symptom of a failing lithium battery. You should immediately contact Apple for a replacement, not just to complain - either Apple customer service or the closest Apple store. Apple does not warrant it's batteries, as they consider them a consummable part, and won't replace them unless defective.

  • 13-month-old battery dead?

About 10 days ago I noticed my battery would drain abnormally quickly - and recharge just as fast. Then about a day later I noticed my battery icon had a big X in it, with no info about % charge.
When I unplug it, it completely dies. The clock gets reset to 12/31/1969 anytime I unplug it, even when I've already shut it down.
Does this mean its dead? Already? I bought this PowerBook in early April 2005.
Any recommendations? Do I absolutely have to buy a new battery, and how do I know if its covered by the warranty?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If you haven't already, you should read the two Apple notes on notebook batteries here and here.
Note that Apple discusses battery longevity in terms of the number of charge/discharge cycles and not calendar time.
Apple's warranty considers the battery a consumable item, unless there's a manufacturing defect. Assuming you have Applecare (if you don't then this is moot), the agreement says "b. Limitations The Plan does not cover:(ix) Consumable parts, such as batteries, except in respect of battery coverage under APP for iPod or unless failure has occurred due to a defect in materials and workmanship"
I've seen one battery (not an Apple) fail like that, when it was plugged in all the time, and never discharged.

  • IPhone 5S only 2 months old. Need replacement. :(

I have dropped my iPhone 5S in water. It has stopped working. Have put it in sunlight for many hours and also attempt to dry it by placing it in front of heater by few feet distance which was enough to get warmth. Had bought it 2 months back. Now it jut shows Apple icon when I turn it on and can see the water on its screen but then it gets switched off. Would Apple replace it for me?

Thanks Peter, But it doesn't show about the Apple Care which is in New Delhi. That is the place close to me. Nagpur is like going abroad for repair.  Well, thank you so much for your help. Will head towards the service centre now.
One question, can't they replace it for free?

  • "Replace Battery" only six months old?

System Profiler says under battery condition says "Replace Now." coconutBattery app also says to replace battery. Battery is six months old, non-Apple but reputable third party, 107 cycles. Could this be a problem other than the battery caused by some problem with the computer?

That's what you get with most third-party batteries. Always use original batteries for your MacBook if you don't want problems.
It looks like OS X detected something in the battery that may make it fail. My advice is to replace the battery you have by an original warranty, and everything should be back to normal

  • I have a 5 month old Magic Mouse and I want to replace the batteries for the first time but the battery door will not release any suggestions?

The battery compartment door on my Magic Mouse appears to be jammed shut and will not open, the device is only 5 months old and this is the first time I have needed to open it to change the batteries. Are there any suggestions?

It could be you are approaching it incorrectly.   It can be a tricky little gadget that actually works with minimal pressure.
Try turning over the mouse so the compartment panel faces you, optical sensor topmost.  Then holding the mouse at each side but not on the panel itself, flick the small, black rectangular panel downwards.   The top of the panel should spring out, though it may require you to manipulate it fully away from the mouse.
Once you have replaced the batteries, starting at the bottom reverse the procedure then clip into place.   Remember to move the small switch next to the optical sensor upwards which should turn on the green light.   Then click twice to connect.

Take it to Apple Store. You are covered under your 1 year warranty.

  • My ipad is less than 3 months old but my battery life is not great. What can I do? Within an hour I have lost nearly 30% of battery life

My ipad is only 3 months old and already just from using pages for about an hour the battery life has gone down by 30%. Is this correct or is there something wrong with the battery life? So much for 10 hour battery life....

You may  have stuff running that you don't know you hve running. Such as notifications default to on, so you may have a bunch of stuff going out and reaching for info that you don't realize is running. So you can look there, and also look at your mail. If it's set to fetch mails or to push. if it's on push, then y our iPad is reacing out to get the mail all the time.
So try turning stuff off. but if the battery is still not acting like you want it to, make an appointment at your local apple store and have them run diagnostics on it, just to make sure. they might also be able to give you some tips or find what's draining your power.
