Original iphhone no longer connects to wifi

It seems as if many others are suddenly having this problem, but I have not seen a posting that solves my problem. I have an original iphone running the latest firmware. It has always connected to my local wifi network without an issue, and my 3gs is doing fine sitting side by side and connecting without a problem. There have been no changes to my wifi security. I use wep encryption. When I first turn on the iphone it will find my local network and try to connect. Sometimes it does connect, showing a checkmark next to the network name. Then is quickly looses connection and says that it is "unable to join the network". When I try to connect manually it says it "could not find the network". I have tried forgetting the network, resetting network settings, restoring the phone etc.
I have seen other postings that say that it is probably a hardware problem with the wifi antennae. I can't believe we are all having this problem at the same time and that it is still able to connect for a couple of seconds. Funny, my antennae has not broken in any other wifi device I have owned.
I should say that I no longer subscribe to at&t with this phone as I have transferred my account to my 3gs. I am using the original iphone as an ipod touch, just using it for wifi-- has there been a change that does not allow such usage and has essentially bricked my phone? If so I don't see how anyone has the right to define how I use a device that I own, is not subsidized, and is on my own network.
Thanks

This doesn't mean it can't happen with any other wi-fi device you have owned. It can and does happen. My original iPhone has not been activated with AT&T for a year and a half, which is used on occasion as an iPod Touch. No problems with accessing my wi-fi network at home. Just because I haven't experienced the same with my original iPhone doesn't mean a hardware failure with the wireless card can't occur with other iPhones and can't/won't occur with my original iPhone at some point.
I have tried forgetting the network, resetting network settings, restoring the phone etc.
Does restoring your iPhone with iTunes include restoring the iPhone as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup?

No.

No one does or is doing so, but a hardware failure can occur with any such device. It can occur with a new iPhone or with an iPhone less than a year old, which is what the warranty is for. Or it can occur two years later, or not occur at all as with my original iPhone up to this point.
Have you followed all the troubleshooting steps included with this link?

  • My iphone 4s and ipad 2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi but non-mac lap top has no issues

my iphone 4s and ipad2 both with 7.0.4 update will no longer connect to wifi.
About three days ago the ability to connect came and went and the connection never lasted more than 10-15 minutes; it has not been able to connect since last night. I do not think it's my wifi router as non-mac lap top has no issues. I have seem many similar questions posted.

Reboot your router by removing all power from it for about 15 seconds. Also, if your router still has its default SSID (such as LINKSYS, DLINK, NETGEAR, etc) change the SSID to something unique. Note that all other devices on your network will have to be reconnected if you change the name, but if the name is still the default that is most likely your problem.
If the SSID is not the default then the reboot should fix it.

No, it is not a known issue. It is a known non-issue. Try resetting your IMAP login ID and password. Both the incoming and outgoing. If that fails delete the account reboot the phone, and add it back.

  • My iPhone 4S will no longer connect to wifi. It is on os6. I've had it for 18 months

My iPhone 4S will no longer connect to wifi.  The wifi button is greyed out. It is using io6. Like this for a week . Is 18 months old. what is warranty time in Australia?

There is a one year limited hardware warranty with all iPhones.
You can check your warranty by going to supportprofile.apple.com.
Try to restore the iphone as new without restoring from a backup. If that doesn't work, you're going to need a repair.
And if it's out of warranty, you will have to pay for it.

  • IMac no longer connects to wifi (3 other Macs + iPod Touch DO).

My iMac 23" (3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz, Airport card: Airport Extreme 0x14E4, 0x8E, fw version Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0, OS10.5.8) no longer connects to wifi. The connection has been dropping regularly over the past month or so and since this morning I can no longer connect wirelessly.
I also have a MacBook (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz, Airport card: Airport Extreme 0x14E4, 0x93, OS10.6.4), a G5 (Dual 1.8 GHz PPC, 1.5 GB, OS10.4.11) and a PowerBook G4 (1.33 GHz, PPC, 768 MB, OS10.4.11) that connect perfectly well - all using a Zyxel Prestige 600 series/Airport Extreme (version 5.7). All 3 "see" the AE Base station in the Airport Admin Utility. To join this network, a password is required and I need to add the device in Access Control. My iPod Touch also connects to my network without problems. All connected Macs are up-to-date software-wise. I did not change anything in the iMac's settings prior to the wifi problems.
The iMac does NOT see the base station (tried rescanning several times, unplugging the basestation, etc). It showed up a few times after I unplugged the base station but then disappeared again. Everything looks fine otherwise, the Network system preference says it's connected to my network. Airport status: full bars.
I have tried to connect the iMac directly to the base station with a cable and that worked. I have also changed the channel (which was set at 10) to 1. I've renewed the DHCP lease.
Looks to me this is an iMac problem, considering there's 3 other Mac's + an iPod Touch connecting to wifi without problems as I'm typing this.
What happens when I delete the system configuration? Will I also lose all of my base station settings? (I have a long list of "approved devices" in there that I'll need to copy).
    Things tried:
    - restarted computer
    - restarted basestation
    - unplugged basestation + restarted iMac
    - switched off+on router + unplugged from basestation + restarted iMac
    - renewed DHCP lease
    - changed channel

    HI,
Go to /Library/Preferences. Move all the files in the System Configuration folder to the Trash, restart the iMac.
That doesn't alter your settings, just resets Airport.

What I know is that the phone worked perfectly fine until I upgraded the software. I've tried resetting the network settings to no avail. I've shut the phone off, put it in a ziplock baggie and then into the freezer for 15 minutes. This made the wifi work temporarily but then it goes back to being grayed out. The wifi does not work at other wifi sites away from my home as well. Seems like an apple issue to me and would appreciate someone coming up with a fix, apparently I'm not the only one having this problem. Thanks for replying to my query, any ideas?
It's likely a hardware issue.  The iOS will not directly cause this issue.
    Use this article first:
iOS: Wi-Fi settings grayed out or dim - http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS1559
If that fails to resolve it, then try setting it up as new and testing again.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4137
If the issue remains even after set up as new, it's a hardware problem, not a software problem.  You'll need to contact Apple for you hardware service options.  If within warranty it should be free.  If not, expect to pay $149 USD + tax if it's an iPhone 4, $199 USD + tax if it's an iPhone 4S.

One of the memory cards was indeed faulty, and the other completely fine
Thanks very much for all your help!
Although there is one little thing that I've noticed. The iMac works properly, but I tried to software update to see if that may help my Minecraft sound issue (as I still don't think only having 2GB instead of 4GB would cause such a problem) but the software update application won't work. Running the "Software Update" from the apple menu on the toolbar gains no response, nothing happens. If I run the software update from  system preferences, the application icon appears for a second, then disappears (as in the blank app. icon, the blank canvas with the pencil, pen and ruler in the bottom right corner). It does this every time I try to run it. It did work when the computer was crashing, but this started when on one of the occasions I ran the app. while it was crashing. Since this occured during the crashes, and still occurs now, I'm wondering did something simlar happen minecraft, as it's sound disappeared during the crashes and is still gone now.
However, the computer is now working again without crashes, which is the main thing, thanks for helping me fix the issue
Edit: I would mark the topic as solved, but I'm unsure if this would lock the topic or something simlar, so I'd rather leave it open for any ideas regarding the software update and Minecraft issues I'm having

  • Iphone 5 no longer connects to wifi

Iphone 5 no longer connects to wifi. Finds network, password correct but then ' cannot connect to network'. Connected to network till today, connects to other networks. Other iphone 5's are able to connect to this network. Please help?
I have turned the phone on and off and reset the network settings. I have also turned the wifi switch on and off.

Call Apple support or take it to an Apple store for evaluation. If it is defective they will replace it.

  • IPhone 4s 5.0.1 will no longer connect to wifi

Updated to iOS 5.0.1 and now my 4s will no longer connect to wifi.  iOS 5.0 worked perfectly.  Now the phone tries to connect to wifi but fails every time and the battery drains faster than water from an unstopped sink. My guess is that the battery drain is due to the phone trying to connect to wifi.  I have done all the usual things.  My phone is 4 ft from my router (and it worked perfectly under iOS 5.0).  I have restored the phone on iTunes with no change.  I would love to go back to iOS 5.0.

Just checked my wife's iPhone 4.  Did an over the air update to 5.0.1 and apparently that killed the wifi on that phone as well.  My iPad 1 and iPod Touch works fine.

  • TS1559 Since upgrading my iPhone5 to the newest iOS (6.1.2) I can longer connect to WiFi. It sees the wireless network but will not connect.. Other devices in my home that weren't upgraded can connect just fine.

I had the same problem.  I did the reset networks on my iPhone & it did not work.  My husband read somewhere that changing the channel on the router to manual & selecting the highest available channel number might help.  I did that & it solved the problem.  I have not had the problem since.

  • IPod Touch 4th Gen No Longer Connects to WiFi

Tonight I've been watching videos via the new Youtube app (from the appstore, since the one that comes with iPod is no longer available). I was watching a Youtube video when the battery on my iPod touch ran out. I connected the charger, the iPod turned on, and it suddenly won't connect to my WiFi anymore. I have other devices that connect to the WiFi with no issues. What happens is I go to my WiFi settings, and select my router as the access point, and a rotating loading icon appears next to my access point's name, 'belkin54g'. But the loading icon never goes away, and as a result doesn't connect to WiFi. I recently upgraded to iOS 6 if that helps. This WiFi connection has always worked fine on this iPod touch, so I have no idea as to why it decided to crap out on me.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.
