Original iPhone back plate replacement

Does anyone know if Apple will replace the back plate on a 1st gen iPhone? It has been dropped several times but still works like a charm. The back plate is dented, etc... and needs to be replaced. I will probably replace the battery at the same time. Any info would be appreciated!

There are a number of aftermarket repair services for iPhones, but those few I've been able to find that quote prices on their web sites have a pretty high price for replacement of the back case - on the order of $70.00 US for just the part, and with installation one site quotes $130.00 - so it may not be worth the cost.

I want my original iphone back!! I LOVED my original iphone. I never even upgraded to 3g or 3gs because it always just worked for me. I was excited to try the new iphone 4, thinking it was time to upgrade. I'm so sorry I did it. I am now on my 2nd iphone 4 and am even more unhappy than I was with the first one. I didn't have dropped calls on my first one but the time keep changing to another time zone randomly and didn't change when it should. Now with my second iphone 4 I'm having the sensor issue CONSTANTLY. I've tried it with case, without case, it doesn't seem to even matter. I put people on hold, speakerphone, disconnect, mute. It's a nightmare.
I have been a loyal apple advocate since in the early 80's but this product may just shake my support. PLEASE fix this issue. Don't tell me to buy a case! It doesn't fix the problem.

(I have to admire such courage. You wouldn't catch me using my £600 phone whilst intentionally leaving go of it!)

How do I backup my contacts and data on an original iPhone? I have a new 3GS but want to know if I can backup info first

Sync the original iPhone with iTunes to back it up. You can then verify that it's backed up by going to iTunes Preferences>Devices. This will list your backups. You can hover your mouse over the device name on the backup list and a pop-up will show you the IMEI, serial number and phone number of the device the backup belongs to.

IPhone Back Panel Replacement (Black 16GB)

I am thinking about using my iPhone without my Griffin Wave case. My only worry is, as i like to look after my gadgets, if the back gets too scratched is there an option to replace it at an apple retail store (Birmingham, UK is my nearest Apple Store). The front bit is no problem as i have a screen protector on there. There is no serial number of the back so i am assuming that all back panels are made identical.
How much would this cost if they can do it?

Apple doesn't offer a la carte service like replacing the back. There are third party vendors that will replace it for a fee.

Decactivated Original iPhone: Can be used as iPod touch?

Does anyone know for certain whether an original iPhone, decativated by replacement with iPhone 3G on the same account, can in iTunes be reset (which installs iPhone software 2.0) and used solely as an iPod touch by someone else with a different computer?
In other words, when original iPhones were sold, you had to activate an AT&T account even to use the iPod functions. Now that I've replaced the phone, a friend would like to use it solely as an iPod touch (i.e., preferably with WiFi).
Can this be done, and does anyone know how to go about it? Thanks.

I updated mine as well. Actually, iTunes gave me no choice. When I clicked Reset, it notified me that it would erase all settings (fine -- wanted that) but would also install v2.0 of the software (I had no problem with that until it then said it needed to register the phone with AT&T). There was no option to do otherwise given the dialog box that popped up.
Like the50ho said...any ideas? As I see it, If this thing's now iBrick, then I have no choice but to find someone who wants to register with AT&T and use it, else sell it.

Selling orignial iPhone, what to do with AppleCare for original iPhone?

I recently received a new original iPhone as a replacement and also purchased the AppleCare for an additional year of warranty in case I have the same problem on this new iPhone (the home button stopped working). So now I am considering getting the 3G and selling this new 1st gen iPhone. What can I do with the AppleCare I have?
1) Move it it the new phone?
2) transfer it to the old phone new owner?
3) all or non of the above?

Update iOS on Original iPhone

I have an un-activated Original iPhone that was replaced by my 3GS. I'd like to update the old model to iOS 3.1.3 (which, IIRC, was the last version to work on the Original iPhone) before I pass it on to someone else.
Can I just hook it up to iTunes and click on Restore to Default? I plan on using my G4 iMac running Tiger and iTunes 9 so as to not mess up the settings on my main iMac.

You CANNOT update or restore without the SIM in the iphone that was previously active or an active SIM.

Applecare Original iPhone Battery Replacement

My battery life has decreased significantly, so I called support and learned that under Applecare, they will cross-ship you a like-new replacement phone for no charge if your battery life is under 50%- but they put a hold on your credit card for the full amount of the replacement until the problem is tested.
My question is this: how stringent are they with the less than 50% battery condition? And what is normal standby time and usage for a 2 year old original iphone running the latest software?
The battery life is certainly not meeting my needs, but will I be charged for the replacement phone if they deem the old battery fit? Will I have the option to get the old phone (and battery) back instead of paying $499 if that is the case?

Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange at a discounted price. The cost is $199 plus tax.
Did AppleCare inform you the replacement cost for an original iPhone is $499 in this situation - for an iPhone that remains under warranty?
I had an iPhone exchanged under warranty once via AppleCare. They required a credit card in case I didn't return the iPhone being exchanged within the required time frame - within 10 business days I believe.
If they determine that your iPhone's battery does not meet this requirement, I would think you have the option to have the iPhone returned to you. You should be able to confirm this with AppleCare.

I have had an original iPhone since about six months after they came out (8GB). I use it as a daily phone, but after six years, I was hoping to have it replaced (and pay out of pocket). Anyone know the costs of purchasing one from Apple? It was offered a while back, but I never took them up on it.

I just downloaded the new itunes 10. I plugged in my iphone and began to set it up. When i got the the page set up your iphone i clicked on restore from the backup "My Iphone" last updated 1.26.11. SO LONG AGO. What I want here is to set it up as a new iphone but now I have my old one back with stuff on there from last year and its annoying me hardcore. Is there anyway I can go back to my original Iphone or is that lost?

If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" as a (too) high value can cause issues.

It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with overlapping text.

Look at this knowledge base article on iOS backups to iTunes, note where the backups are kept for your type of computer, Windows or Mac, go to that Library location and see if there are any other files with the same name as the current backup but with a different extension and date/time stamp. If so you can edit the extension of the current backup and then change the extension of the previous backup so it looks like what was on the current and the do a restore. iTunes will think the older backup is now new and use it to restore.
If there are no such files then you over-wrote the backup and it is gone.

Well, this is a problem, because the only material you can transfer from your iPhone (using only Apple software) is material you purchased in the iTunes Store.
To do that, plug your iPhone into iTunes, then choose File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from iTunes' menu.
Generally speaking, you should restore your iTunes library from your computer's backup.

Its the same as a carrier for example I have Verizon if i were to have my phone replaced and not send back the phone they would charge me the price of the phone. Its like a secuity deposit
