Original iPhone, latest firmware, universal dock, composite AV cable ...

and a plasma tv...
I am trying to watch some ITunes U movies on my plasma set while working out. So i buy a universal dock, the composite AV cable for the iPhone, hook it all up and try to watch an episode. What happens is that the video on the iPhone becomes frozen with the title, and i get sound but no video on the Plasma. The Plasma (having S-Video and Video in connectors) displays S-Video as the input source...
So, a basic, stupid question. If i have, let's say an HD video on the iPhone, and try to play this over TV Out, is that supposed to work over a composite cable? Or do i need to convert those videos to 576i first? Meaning, does the iphone do any kind of conversion on the fly for the signal, or not?
If it does, what else could be the problem here?
Frank

Frank,
I am able to play videos from my iPhone using composite cables. I have a Panasonic plasma TV and when I first tried to play a video I found It would not play using my normal "cable" setting. I had to use the remote control that came with my TV and select another "cable" setting, after which it played perfectly (sound and picture). Finally, make sure that the input jacks are pushed in all the way.

  • Availability of the Apple Universal Dock & Composite A/V Cable

Does anyone know if the Apple Universal Dock & Composite A/V Cable for the Touch are in Apple Stores? My daughter purchased what the sales person said were the correct accessories as a surprise b'day gift from the Apple NY Soho store and they sold her the iPod Universal Dock and a Monster Composite (RCA) Audio cable. Wrong! Apparently the sales person did not know what they were doing. When looking at the Apple Online Store it states that they take 3-4 weeks for delivery. BTW, I am waiting for my Touch which is enroute.

Thank you for the response, but Apple's own support site states otherwise. The iPod Universal Dock uses an S-Video out. The Apple Universal Dock requires the use of the Composite or Component A/V Cable. The Apple site specifies that the iPod Universal is not compatible. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300233
Were you actually able to send your Touch video to your TV via the iPod Universal Dock? If so, I'll give it a shot before returning it.

Just bought a iPod Universal Dock, and pulg my iPhone 3G into it, it says "This accessory is not made to wrk with iPhone" and ask me to turn on the airplane mode.
I thought the Universal Dock is universal for all iPod and iPhone, why does it give me a such error message?

I had that with a universal ipod dock but it worked fine. The only thing is that no sound came from the iphone when docked.

  • IPhone + Apple iPod Universal Dock?

Does anyone know if the iPod Universal Dock is really
compatible with the iPhone? When I plug my iPhone into
the UD it says "This accessory was not made to work with
iPhone" and then proceeds to ask if I want to go into

"sync" functionality works perfect. Must have something
to do with audio/video output ports on the UD?? Anyone???

I do not have the UD adapter for the iPhone, I just plug
that puppy right in and hope that i don't hit it as it is
only being held up by the connector at the bottom. I've
never had a issue with this and my nano either. I'm too lazy

  • IPhone 3G & iPod Universal Dock (Model AA1153)

    Hello all,
I am unable to find any information that states whether or not the iPhone 3G is compatible with iPod Universal Dock (Model # AA1153). I know they have a new(er) version out that has a different Infrared lens on the front, but mine is about a year old and has a round lens.
I'm hesitant to plug it in since it is unknown whether or not the dock is compatible or not. Any assistance is greatly appreciated
PS: Also, can you charge the iPhone 3G w/ firewire? I have a few spare iPod firewire power bricks and dock cables..

    Thanks!

  • Video Output on iPod Classic using Apple Universal Dock and Camcorder Cable

So, after a little experimentation and research, I've found a way to use Apple's Universal iPod Dock (Apple®-iPod™ Universal Dock-MA045G/A) and my camcorder's AV cable. That's right, no need to purchase Apple's expensive and proprietary AV cables. Of course, if resolution is a concern for you, this post is not for you. Note: if you don't already have a camcorder AV cable, they can be had cheaply online or in retail stores.
Here's what my output is like:
    Composite Video
    Analog Audio
    Here's how to do it:
    Step 1:
Get an Apple Universal iPod dock (if you are fortunate enough to already own one, your cost investment is $0). If not, you can order them online, just do a google search for the model # above.
    Step 2:
Go here (http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/mac/2005/11/18/video-ipod.html) and follow the details of the article precisely to allow you to output video and audio. Yes, I know it's an old article for the 5G video iPod, but it still applies if you are using the Universal iPod dock.
I just tested this all, so I know it works beautifully!
    Best of luck to all!
    David

For anyone else with similar issues - Apple removed that functionality in the iPod classic and you can simply buy Apple's cables to make it work.
Sadly, I cannot use it at my gym anymore, but at least there is a solution for the rest of you!
Here is the necessary cable in the Apple store:

  • IPhone 3G on Universal Dock will not make SMS notification sound, only vibe

When the phone is on the dock, none of the sounds for text messages are made, phone calls are, alarms are, but no text messages. Is anyone else experiencing this? It makes noises for calls, noises for reminders, but for SMS just vibrates.
    Thanks.

    Hi Randall,
If you haven't already, try resetting the iPhone by holding the Home & Sleep/Wake buttons until you see an Apple logo as described here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305743

  • IPhone "rejects" Universal Dock?!

    Hi all
Lately when I dock my iPhone in the Universal Dock,
    A) The dock in chime will not sound
    B) A pop up message says This Accessory is not for the iPhone, something like that
    C) At times will ask me if I want to switch to Airplane mode
Because of this, the phone stays silent in the Dock, I can't hear my SMS or
    my morn alarms
    And it's getting very frequent
    Any idea? Thanks

    Hi
Can the bent pin or damage occur with the phone? 'Cause I have 4 Universal Docks at home and each of them has the same messages and problem.
But plugging the Universal Dock to a power supply will always have no problem.
I notice this problem ever since I upgrade to Snow Leopard:
    - Sometimes the "error & rejection" messages will not appear
    - But there will not be the 'Dock In' Chime, hence the phone will be silence if there is a SMS or alarm
    Thanks

  • IPhone doesn't work with Universal Dock remote?

    Hello,
I received an Apple Universal Dock with remote for Christmas, and I'm pretty sure I remember it and the remote working just fine with my iPhone when I first set it up. Today, I tried using it again, and found that I can't use the Universal Dock's remote for anything other than controlling the volume, and even though I can raise or lower the volume with the remote, the volume change is not reflected on my iPhone's screen - the iPhone's ipod volume indicator doesn't move.
The Universal Dock and remote work just fine with my wife's second generation nano, and the iPhone works without any problems when docked into a Logitech mm50 speaker system - the mm50's remote is able to jump forward and backwards through songs, pause, play, etc. The problem seems limited to the combination of my iPhone and the Universal Dock and remote.
Is this normal? According to the Universal Dock's package and documentation, it is compatible with the iPhone and doesn't mention anything about the remote having limited capabilities when used with the iPhone.
If this isn't normal, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
thanks in advance and best regards,
    tom

i just bought this dock as a car dock. I have it hooked up to power 12v and output to 1/8 into head unit. Now, I have to be in iTunes music to get it to work and it only allows volume, playing of files in a playlist and to next song. Are any of you guys having issues with VERY limited use of the remote and lack of really a benefit from using a remote because you have to touch it anyways to change through songs or video??? Are you guys wondering why you even bought it if the remote is not supported as a functional addition?

  • HELPED NEED! AV Cable * Universal Dock

I purchased the universal dock and av cable hoping to play my music from my ipod on my stero system. The cable has a line that fits into the steroeo nicely but then it has three lines; one is yellow, one red, and the last one is white. I put them all in respectively while the music was playing and i can't hear anything. What should I do??

You've most likely connected the wrong connectors if you know what I mean.
The AV cable you have incorporates a vidoe stream. For listening to audio only, your cable would only have two connectors at one end.
You should still be able to use the cable though - connect the single plug at one end to the iPod dock, then connect the White plug to the Black port on your hi-fi and the red plug to the red port on your hi-fi. Make sure you turn your iPod volume up and change your hi-fi's source setting to Aux (auxiliary, line-in or something similar). The yellow cable is for video - you might have these three connections on your TV.

  • IPhone & Universal Dock - No video out after resume from pause

OK - original 16GB iPhone, latest universal dock and Apple Composite cable, hooked to a 42" Sony LCD TV. iPhone is at latest revision.
Used to be that if I used the remote to pause a video, I could wander off, make a cup of coffee, and when I came back, even though the iPhone was locked, I could press play on the remote and carry on where I Ieft off. Recently though, when I try to resume from the paused state, I get sound but no video and I have to walk over to the docked iPhone, unlock it, and then I get video out.
I can only assume that this bug was introduced (or the previously working feature was removed) by a software update. Whatever the cause, it is a pain.
The cynic in me would assume that it is Apple's sneaky way of reducing the feature set to below the minimum expected so as to drive users to buy an Apple TV. The optimist in me assumes it is a bug and it CAN BE FIXED IN THE NEXT RELEASE!
    Anybody else experienced this issue?
    Message was edited by: TheFamousJames

I also believe this is a bug, but I found a workaround. I after starting the video you press the wake-up button, the iPhone screen goes off, but the video keeps playing. Now if you pause using the remote, you can also resume using the remote without having to unlock the iPhone.
The weirdest thing about this is that after doing it once, you can unlock you iPhone and be able to pause and resume as expected. As soon as you change the video (that is, you turn the video out off) the iPhone forgets what he just learned and doesn't resume from the remote again.
So as a rule I always turn the iPhone screen off after starting a video. So I'm able to use my remote nicely. I hope this works for you too... and that it gets corrected in the next SW version!

  • Cabling from Apple Universal Dock to TV (with iPhone)

    Folks,
I am well able to get video signal from my iPhone sitting in my Apple Universal Dock to TV sets (and yes I am using Apple's Composite cable) but audio signal just doesn't come through using this cabling system. When I plug in an additional cable from the roung separatel "LINE OUT" port in the Apple Universal Dock and plug other end of that Y-cable into the audio in ports on the TV, I get the audio.
I thought the whole idea of using the "component" cable (yellow going into the yellow video port on the TV, red and white going into their respective audio ports on the TV) that the entire video and audio signals were sent out the long'ish horizontal connector from behind the dock and funneled into the red, white, and yellow connectors on the component cable's other end thus making it unnecessary to use both the "line out" port on the dock in addition to the long white horizontal plug.
What is up here and is there such a thing as one cable that has on one end the long white horizontal type plug as well as a line out plug and on the other end the red, yellow, and white plugs that go into the TV? There is none on the Apple site - just the COMPOSITE cable which is for TVs (the newest types) that offer essentially 5 ports - 3 for just video and 2 for audio.
What IS the correct way the user is supposed to be doing this????

I saw the Chart, I got the same problem as last year when I had my iPhone 3G 16GB. Apple NEVER SOLVE the issue and simply put the iPhone 3G being supported in the chart. It's not hard for them to add the 3GS for the next printed update.
Very dissappointed with Apple on the universal dock and AV component cable combo. They are not cheap either!
Anyone knows how can I connect the iPhone 3GS to computer monitor or projector just like what they did in WDC?

  • IPhone (3,3G,4) does not work with Apple Universal Dock.

I have a 3rd generation iPod Touch that has been upgraded to iOS 4. My iPod Touch will no longer sync via the Apple Universal Dock. Also, my new iPhone 4 also will not sync via the Apple Universal Dock.

Trust a geek not to give up. I decided to get to the bottom of the "iOS device does not work with the Apple Universal Dock" problem. I noticed that the iPhone 4 and iPad came with slightly different USB-Dock adapter cables. I wondered if that might be the issue. My Apple Universal Dock was connected to my Mac via the original dock adapter cables which are slightly larger. I connected the newer cables between the Mac and the Apple Universal Dock and .... voila! Both the iPod Touch with iOS 4 and the iPhone can now connect via the Apple Universal Dock. Apple changed something in the way the adapter cables function.
Of course I still have the problem with the car head unit dock adapter ... Sigh. I'll have to call Best Buy ( uughh! ) and find out if they'll do the update for me. The were the vendor authorized installer.

  • Official Apple Composite Cable DOESN'T WORK with iPhone 3GS firmware 3.1.2

I've tried everything and I cannot make the official apple composite cable (MB129LL/B) work with my iPhone 3GS 3.1.2.
I get no video output AND no sound as if the cable is simply not made for my 3GS
What do need to do to get composite video output on my 3GS 3.1.2????

"The 3GS will not work with a Composite cable. It will only work with a Component cable. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1454"
I have had no luck with getting the component cables to work with my 3GS. They are the Apple branded cables, not some knockoff. I would be angry if I needed to buy the universal dock to get them to work. Per some of the forums I've read, it is not needed. Also, from all the reading I've done on the TV out feature in this forum and others, it appears to be a hit or miss whether it works or not.
