Original iPhone Lock Issues

After buying an iPhone from a friend of mine, it worked fine until I foolishly dropped it into a toilet. For a while, the lock button would go nuts and the phone would randomly lock at the most inopportune times. That stopped after a while, and the phone would turn off if left locked for more than a moment.
After a while, my phone decided to work again. It worked perfectly, as if nothing had happened.
Then OS 3.1, and a problem returned: my phone would turn off if locked.
I don't know what to do. I took it to an Apple store and they told me that since it had incurred water damage they couldn't do a thing but offer me a new phone.
What's weird is that it will stay on while locked if there is music playing or if it is charging, whether through the wall charger or through the computer. What I have resorted to doing is keeping my headphones in my phone and playing music but turning the volume all the way down.
Is there anything I can do to repair my phone?

Wow! I am so glad I found this posting. I have been having trouble with a dead area of my screen for about two to three weeks now and it has been driving me nuts. I went to the genius bar where they told me my warranty was out of date. They did a reset and my guy went off for lunch while I was waiting!!!! One of the people on the floor gave me my phone back and said it should be OK. Went home, installed it as a new phone and same problem. It has been getting much worse. Delete keys in email and voicemail inoperative, keyboard totally out of control inserting two letters and random capital letters. Apps 'Muddled' I have to keep changing from landscape to portrait mode in order for buttons to be active. Extreme frustration. I had grudgingly made another appointment to go to the genius bar tonight and now thanks to this post I am going with the knowledge that it isn't 'just me.' Thank you again. pps My daughter is going today because her 3G is switching off randomly and I also found a thread regarding that. Double thank you.

• Original iPhone - Keyboard Issues

Hi, I have an original iPhone running the 2.0 firmware. It has been running fine for the most part since I upgraded, but this morning I noticed that the bottom row of keys on the keyboard has stopped working. All of the other keys are still working fine, but from the Caps-Lock key to the backspace button, nothing works. I'm on a trip right now without my home computer that I sync with so this is really frustrating.
Has anyone else had a problem with this? If so, do you know of a quick fix other than restoring the software?
Thanks for any help.

• IPhone lock-up, crash & rebooting issues?

Hi, All – I have the original iPhone with 2.0 software. Since the initial install and even after doing a restore on it, the phone has been crashing and rebooting intermittently. I am using AT&T service, and I have never attempted to unlock the phone or run arbitrary code on it, so these issues are baffling to me. Below is a brief list of what I’ve encountered. Again, the iPhone is crashing and rebooting, not the apps:
Press the “Home” button = intermittent crash, then reboot (might happen back to back, or as infrequently as 6 hours – no rhyme or reason)
Press the “Power” button = (same result as above)
Phone locked up when receiving a call, lit up & identified the caller, no ring or vibration then it rebooted. This has happened twice.
Phone locked up when receiving a text message. Noticed it as I heard an odd tone from my phone for a split second, then it crashed and rebooted and showed a text message on the home screen when it finished rebooting.
Also, I have had other problems where the phone didn’t crash or reboot – it just didn’t perform properly:
When receiving a call – display does not light; phone does not ring or buzz. Voicemail received from caller though call not noted in received calls list. Also, I have had a greater number of “Call Failed” problems, even with full cell signal in Denver, CO. This may be AT&T’s fault, but it seems fine after I shut down and restart the phone.
In general, my iPhone with 2.0 software seems a bit more laggy. Screen rotation from portrait to landscape isn’t as smooth and opening the SMS app seems to have a consistent 2-second delay regardless of if I have cleared out my text message logs or not.
Also, when I reboot the phone, more often than not it starts off at the “slide to unlock” screen instead of the home screen.
Regarding location services – My gripe is that it can’t be told to either:
Stay on all the time
Shut off all the time
Activate when needed, then shut off – just like in 1.1.4.
Now when I use an application that I allow to use location services, I have to manually go and shut location services off again or my battery life will suffer.
I have now removed all of the new applications from the phone, and am still experiencing crash/reboot problems. My guess is my phone is damaged somehow or the software I downloaded was somehow flawed during downloading or installation.
Does anyone have any ideas? I really like this phone, but I can't bring myself to buy the new 3G if I can't be certain I wouldn't have the same problems
Thank you,
Lynn

I have experienced this problem as well and it is intermittent to say the least. I have two other friends that have an i-phone as well, and when the phone crashed it stored a picture of the screen in the photo library of the phone. I thought that was a little odd as well. I have another friend that has not updated to 2.0 yet and does not seem to be having any problems at all. I would venture to guess that there is a problem with the update and that an update will be out sometime to correct the problem. If anyone knows of a way to correct the problem please post a fix for us.

• Has anyone else had the issue of losing the YouTube apps on the original IPhone after updating to 4.3.5

Has anyone else had the issue of losing theYouTube app on the original IPhone after updating to 4.3.5? (The Restrictions is turned as OFF)
The Youtube app is now cleaned away from the IOS 4.3.5
Any help would be appreciated.

This still doesn't make sense. The iPhone 4 may have come with a number of different versions of iOS out of the box depending on when it was purchased and how long it had sat on the shelf.
If you can't find it, check restrictions and make sure you haven't locked it out.

• How to "re-lock" an unlocked original iPhone?

I have just obtained an original iPhone that's been unlocked and jailbroken, running v1.1.2 software. The original owner was using it with T-Mobile.
I want to put it back to original settings so I can activate it with AT&T, but I don't want to brick it. Can anyone offer some advice on how to do this? I've already been to the AT&T store and the drone there had no idea what to do, but I have an AT&T SIM card ready to use.
Can anyone guide me through this? Thanks!

If your iPhone is the original 2G iPhone, updating or restoring to the latest firmware does not re-lock the iPhone. It only puts it in an unactivated and "jailed" state. Your iPhone remains unlocked. Don't believe me? Try inserting your T-Mobile SIM into the iPhone. You will still see the T-Mobile carrier icon and you will still see the signal bar.
Having an unactivated and "jailed" iPhone may be good enough for you to get service from AT&T, even though your iPhone remains unlocked and most likely usable on all non-AT&T GSM networks.

• Original iPhone Screen Color Issue?

Hello, so basically my original iPhone is having some screen problems. Whats happening is that the screen colors of the iPhone are somewhat inverted. I don't know how to fix this cause I'm not sure whether or not it's a hardware problem. A helpful note: when I restart it, it shows the apple screen but the backdrop is white and the apple is dark. Other than that it works fine.

and if theres any information ive missed that you would like to know, feel free to ask

• 2.0 & iTunes 7.1 Screwed Original iPhone Big Time!

It seems a lot of people are having issues with 2.0 and 7.1 iTunes but wondering if anyone is seeing these issues. I've add my original iPhone since Day 1 release (yes, 4 hours in line) and have been preaching the praises of Apple and this phone for the past year, I cannot be without it. Now with 2.0 and 7.1, I AM ******!
Nothing has worked correctly since this download. My touchscreen is f'd. I cannot forward email, the button simply does not work when pressed. The 'Save Picture' also does not work when pressed. I managed to become a master at typing on the touchscreen keyboard and now when I touch the letters they are highlighted as the correct letters, but a completely different letter shows up on the screen and AutoCorrect doesn't even recognize it. My caps lock will come on on its own and the delete button gets stuck on and deletes multiple lines of tex. Everything with this recent download has brought my phone to a crawl in addition to constant lock ups and reboots.
There are many others, but the biggest is the touchscreen issue. Are there others out there having the same issue? If there is a fix, please let me know, otherwise, Apple, how the **** did you miss such a simple software test?
Also, I want to move to 3G, anyone having these screen issues with 3G?

Short, I guess we were posting the same issue at the same time--or else I would've just replied to your thread w/o beginning my own. Agreed. Same issues as you (and more) since 2.0 and iTunes updates.
I really hope there is a fix because this stinks.

• Original iphone/2.0 software/bmw 328i/bluetooth problems

I have the original iphone; updated to 2.0. The bluetooth used to work great with the bmw - now with the 2.0, the phone locks up & major problems connecting, staying connected. Address book no longer syncs either. I re-paired the phone, but no dice. Any other ideas?...
Thank you

2.0.1 fixed the matter regarding the bluetooth....
the address book sync has been an issue from the beginning... who knows..
the phone is snappier... it works... I can live....

• Original iPhone with 2.0 Performance

I dont know if it is just my imagination but ever since I upgraded to 2.0 on my original iPhone. The devices' performance has dropped significantly.
Things like menu transitions will be slow and/or stuttery.
I will be looking at a contact in my list and when I tap a person's name, it will take 3 or 4 seconds to register the tap.
Sometimes when im listening to music it will stop playing and go back to the home screen randomly.
When im listening to music and using other apps, when i input anything the music gets choppy as its processing the inputs.
Sometimes entering a text message is so slow it can take the device several seconds to register each button press.
There are loads of other little things.
I dont know if is just me or are there any others out there experiencing the same annoyances.

Yeah, I'm having all the same issues. Using Contacts is pointless as it takes 4 seconds to open the menu and then another 4 seconds to recognize any selections after that. SMS messaging does the same... It's like I'm using my old SLVR again with it's painfully slow OS.
Funny thing is, I went to one of the Apple stores yesterday and thought I'd check out the 3G phones on display which to my amusement were performing abysmally worse than my 1st generation with 2.0. Eventually one of the employees came up to me and asked if I had any questions, at which point I showed him how laggy the display model was and when I hit the maps application in front of him, I got a white screen and it just stayed locked up!
His reaction seriously made me laugh (and shake my head) as he pretended that was the first time he'd ever seen such poor performance. I said I noticed how there weren't any more obnoxious Mac Guy vs. PC Guy commercials on anymore, and then he tried to change the subject to Vista. Hmmm, at least the PC Guy can call customer support without having to worry about Microsoft bricking his phone on launch day!
Tangent aside, though I do hope someone enjoyed my story, I wouldn't count on Apple fixing the lag anytime soon. This company has made it very clear to the world that it will only do what it wants when it wants to with complete disregard to the consumers of its products.
Now that I feel an example is warranted, remember that Apple took several months to release a firmware update that fixed the SMS timestamp that caused them to display out of order in version 1.1.3... and even then, Apple NEVER even admitted there was a problem.

• How do i go back to my original iphone if i restored it from a backup?i

I just downloaded the new itunes 10. I plugged in my iphone and began to set it up. When i got the the page set up your iphone i clicked on restore from the backup "My Iphone" last updated 1.26.11. SO LONG AGO. What I want here is to set it up as a new iphone but now I have my old one back with stuff on there from last year and its annoying me hardcore. Is there anyway I can go back to my original Iphone or is that lost?

if you click this link you can go to step 5 and see where i screwed up.
Can anyone help me out here?
HOW DO I GO BACK IF I RESTORE FROM OLD IPHONE?

Can you attach a screenshot and maybe post a link?
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
*View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)
If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" as a (too) high value can cause issues.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
Make sure that you allow websites to choose their fonts.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with overlapping text.

• How do I change the phone number of an original iPhone

My oldest daughter just got a new phone for xmas. She is giving her original iPhone to her sister (who's iphone was stolen) I erased the content, but how to I change the phone number to my younger daughter's #, which is still active.

I thought the data erase feature was only on the new G3's? We did think she had password lock on, which is why we figured it couldn't be returned. We thought whoever found it (she knows she lost it on the school bus, there were only two other high school girls on the bus at the time) couldn't get in to figure out who it belonged too...now we realized she had turned it off and someone actually "stole it" v. "found it"

• Original iPhone will no longer connect to wifi

I have an original iPhone updated to 3.1.2 recently. Since then I have had problems with it connecting to my wifi networks both at work and at home with no other network problems to speak of. It was connecting on and off until finally, it will not connect at all. I have tried to manually connect to my networks and it prompts that it cannot scan for wireless networks. Please help apple!

First try this:
Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
Re-enter your wifi info, see if things work now. If not, proceed:
Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:
1. Reset: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the apple logo, then release(ignore the slide to power off). If no change, proceed:
2. Restore your phone in itunes from your most recent backup. While this will restore a fresh OS, it will also restore the problem/problems if part of your backup. If no change, proceed:
3. Restore your phone as a "new" device in itunes & re-sync your itunes content. You will lose all saved data doing this.
If no change after doing the above, you most likely have a hardware issue.

• Original iphone works but can no longer be activated for phone use????

I have one of the original iphones that works but I no longer use (as in I paid $700 for it when it first came out). I just gave it to my nephew and my brother tells me Apple and ATT don't support it and he's being told that it can't be set-up as a functioning phone? That the current version of itunes won't support it either? Does this make sense to anyone? Could this be true? I'm on my 3rd iphone version and the first 2 work I just upgraded so now the old phones can't be used? I gave the same nephew a much older flip phone that still works and it has phone service.... Thoughts?

This doesn't make any sense to me either. Are we missing some vital information or is he just mistaken?
Until this last November, I was using a Blackberry Curve. I was visiting a friend and complained about the trackball giving me fits. He went to his kitchen junk drawer and pulled out his very first iPhone 2g and tossed it to me. I've been using it ever since without issue.
If the phone is in proper working order, it should only take a call to AT&T to order an appropriate plan and sim card. The original iPhone is still fully supported by AT&T and iTunes. While iOS support does end with version 3.1.3 and more and more apps do require iOS4, it still affords a very reasonable user experience. So reasonable, in fact, I am reconsidering my original plan of upgrading to the iPhone 4 this month. What can I say? It kicks BB Curve behind and does everything I need using a sweet grandfathered calling and data plan! laugh

• Apps no longer working on Original iPhone...

Acckk!
As each new upgrade happens some of my apps no longer work and there is no access to older versions of these apps.
Scanforlife, on this day, etc. now refuse to load on to the phone. Have had issues with AOL Radio which no longer works and was on my main screen, but had to take it off as it wasn't working.
Appears that one way or another our original iphones are truly being set out to pasture.

Do you have backups of your hard disc/library to restore the original Apps (ips files) after deleting the updated ones ?

• [Original iPhone] To 2..2 or not 2..2 that is the question!

Would like to hear from Original iPhone owners.
I see so many different issues and while 2.1 (or anything after 1.1.4) is loaded with its own issues and unreliability, wondering why get rid of the problems I know and have to find out new ones.
Let me know.

Lots of bug fixes in iPhone OS 2.2 (5G77). Fewer MobileSafari crashes, fewer third-party applications crashes, and improved memory management.
Notice I said "fewer".
Interestingly, the 2.2 Wi-Fi client is still somewhat aggressive in its power management. Would be nice to incorporate user-defined power management across the entire phone.
As far as stability of third-party apps in 2.2, some of the UI libraries still have bugs. I imagine this is known issue by now.
Still some missing items that limit mainstream enterprise adoption, including...
- lack of management for IT policy to control app store restrictions,
- limited device security/encryption,
- no detection/reporting of integrity violations
- no ability to receive policies over the air (users MUST install them)
- centralized backup / versioning
Overall, it's a solid consumer & small-business platform. It's still in its infancy for corporate administrators, developers, and management.
Thoughts?
